BGB recover drugs worth Tk 335 crore including yaba, crystal meth since January
Border Guard Bangladesh have seized Tk 335.78 crore worth of drugs including yaba, crystal meth and arrested 434 drug peddlers from bordering areas of Cox’s Bazar so far this year.
BGB revealed the information in a press release Saturday.
On Friday, BGB arrested 5 peddlers with 6.9 lakh pieces of yaba tablets worth Tk 20.70 Crore while conducting a special drive, said BGB.

Following a tip-off, a patrol team led by Lieutenant Colonel Md Mehedi Hossain Kabir, commander of BGB-34 conducted a drive at yaba godfather Iqbal Hossain’s house at Ukhia Korbunia area and arrested four peddlers with 50,000 of yaba tablets.
Later they recovered another six lakh yaba tablets from a deep forest area under the Rejuparareju and Garjanbunia border outpost of BGB.
A separate patrol team of BGB detained another drug peddler with 40,000 yaba tablets from the Rejupara border outpost area.
Since January, BGB recovered 56,01,025 yaba tablets and 33.55 Kg crystal meth during drives at Cox’s Bazar, Teknaf, Ramu and Naikhongchari border areas, said BGB in its release.
New Market clashes: Another case filed over Mursalin’s death
A case has been filed over the death of Mursalin, who was killed in the clashes between Dhaka College students and Dhaka New Market traders.
SM Qaiyum, officer-in-charge (OC) of New Market police station, said Mursalin’s brother lodged a complaint with the New Market police.

Police registered an FIR against 100-150 people after receiving the complaint.
So far, more than 1,400 people were booked in connection with Tuesday’s violent clashes between Dhaka College students and New Market traders that claimed two lives.
Of the deceased, Mursalin, 26, who worked at a clothing store in New Market died on Thursday at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), inspector Bachchu Mia, in charge of the local police outpost, said.
On Tuesday night, Nahid, 20, who was not involved but simply happened to be in the vicinity during the clashes died during treatment at DMCH.
Earlier, of a total of three cases filed in connection with the clashes, Yeamin Kabir, inspector (investigation) of New Market Police Station lodged an FIR against 24 identified people and 900 unidentified students and traders.
Charges were pressed against them for carrying out attacks on police that left some of the cops injured, officials said.

Another FIR was lodged at the same police station on a complaint from sub-Inspector Mehedi Hasan for obstructing cops from discharging their duties and vandalism. As many as 200 unidentified people were accused in this case.
Meanwhile, Syed, uncle of the slain delivery man of a courier service, Nahid Hossain, lodged a complaint with the New Market police in connection with the death of his nephew during the clashes.
Police registered an FIR against 150-200 people after receiving the complaint.
More than 30 people, including journalists and students, were injured as the students of Dhaka College clashed with the traders of New Market at the Nilkhet intersection from midnight on Monday to Tuesday.
Shopkeepers, however, alleged that the students were beaten up as they had refused to foot the bill at an eatery.
New Market clashes: BNP leader Makbul held
Police detectives on Friday arrested former New Market thana BNP President Makbul Hossain in a case filed for obstructing police in performing duties, assaulting law enforcement officers, and damaging property during the clashes between students of Dhaka College and traders in New Market area.
Confirming the arrest Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Faruq Hossain said they held Makbul from the city’s Adabor area this evening.

13 members of fake question leak gang held in Laksmipur
Detectives have arrested 13 members of a gang on a charge of cheating people in the name of providing leaked primary assistant teacher recruitment test question papers in Ramganj upazila of Laksmipur on Friday.
The arrestees are Mahmudul Hossain, his wife Sharmin Akhter, Sumi Akhter, Morsheda Jannat Rebu, Suraiya Akhter, Tania Basar, Tasnim Akhter, Sarmin Akhter, Manzur Hossain, Rahmat Ullah, Parvez Hossain, Zahirul Islam, Jamal Uddin Sabuj.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of DB police arrested them after conducting several drives in the area before starting exams on Friday morning, said AHM Kamruzzaman, superintendent of police in a press briefing on Friday afternoon.
During the drives, the law enforcers also recovered fake question papers with answer sheets, blank checks of different banks, original copies of education certificates from their possessions, the release added.
Legal action will be taken against the detainees, it said.
3 of a restaurant held as 30 suffer food poisoning
Police have arrested three people from a restaurant at Rupkotha Road in Pabna under the Food Safety Act on Thursday night.
The arrestees are owner of Kashmiri Food Garden Hasanur Rahman Rony, manager Sabbir Hossain and Nazmus Sadat Masud.
They were arrested in a case filed under Section 33 of the Safe Food Act-2013 and sent to jail the same night.

According to police, a farewell iftar-dinner party was arranged at Pabna Court premises on Wednesday where the restaurant supplied food. Thirty people, including nine judges of the Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court, fell ill after having their iftar.
Pabna Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) Md. Saiful Islam said that he and his wife became severely ill after having the iftar and later took treatment at a private hospital.

He himself filed a case at Pabna Sadar Police Station after the incident, he said.
Pabna Additional Superintendent of Police Masud Alam said a farewell and iftar was held at the court premises. Everyone fell ill after having iftar brought from the Kashmiri Food Garden. Six of them were treated at the hospital on Wednesday night. The rest took treatment at their homes.
Police arrested three including the owner and manager of the restaurant and sent them to jail, the ASP said.
Ensure safety of Eid journey of home-bound people: IGP
Inspector General of Police Benazir Ahmed on Thursday directed the field level police officers to ensure safe movement of the people going home to celebrate the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr festival.
“The safety of the people has to be ensured through coordination within each unit of the police,” the police chief said addressing virtually at meeting of senior police officers and specialized unit officials at police headquarters.
The IGP directed the police officers to build an adequate security system through beat policing and community policing.

He also asked the police members to follow the instructions of the government in using social media.
He directed the specialized naval, industrial, highway and tourist police units to take adequate security measures in their respective jurisdictions on the occasion of Eid.
During the meeting, AIG (Operations) Mohammad Ehsan Sattar placed security issues related to the upcoming holy Eid-ul-Fitr, shopping malls, banks and financial institutions, bus and launch terminals, and railway stations, Eid Jamaat and leisure center-centric security as well as traffic management and overall law and order.At the meeting, it was decided to deploy women and white-clothes police along with uniformed police in shopping malls, banks and financial institutions.Decisions of providing escorts for large financial transactions or money transfers were also taken at the meeting. The meeting also decided to ensure the security of the country's main Eid Jamaat, including the National Eidgah.

Passengers have been asked not to travel on the roofs of buses and trains and on boats at the risk of their lives.

Those who attacked journalists during New Market clashes to face action: Minister
Those who attacked journalists during clashes between Dhaka College students and New Market shopkeepers will be brought to justice, said Information and Broadcasting Minister Hasan Mahmud on Thursday.
It will be dig out whether the journalists were attacked by students or traders, he said while responding to a question from reporters after a courtesy call on the newly appointed US Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Haas at the Secretariat.

Regarding the meeting with the US ambassador, the information minister said, “Many issues were discussed between us there.”
“We have discussed how the media in Bangladesh works. There was also talk on the challenges of social media around the world.” he added.
“I told the Ambassador that the way the media in Bangladesh works is not seen in many developing countries.”

“I gave him (the Ambassador) the example of the media in the UK, if there is misinformation in any report, any false news is reported, if anyone is defamed, then the media outlet is fined,” he added.
The Minister also thanked the Ambassador for their continuous cooperation.
The Ambassador also praised the way Bangladesh is working to curb terrorism and militancy in the meeting, said the minister adding “We hope that our relationship will be strengthened in the coming days.”
Evaly CEO Rassel gets bail in 9 cheque fraud cases, cannot walk out of jail
CEO of controversial e-commerce platform Evaly Md Rassel was granted bail by a Dhaka court on Thursday in nine cases of cheque fraud.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court judges passed the orders during a hearing on the bail petitions submitted by Rassel’s lawyer advocate Ahsan Habib.
However, he will not be able to walk out of jail now as he did not secure bail in other cases.

On April 6, Rassel’s wife Shamima Nasrin, Chairperson of Evaly, walked out of Kashimpur Women's Central Jail after the court granted them both bail in another six cases on condition of settling the case with the plaintiffs in different times.
On September 16, last year, Evaly CEO Mohammad Rassel and his wife Shamima were arrested during a raid on their house in capital’s Mohammadpur area.
The owners of Evaly were allegedly involved in embezzlement of several hundred crores of taka. They were arrested after a victim filed a case against them.

Arif Baker lodged a case with Gulshan police station accusing the couple of stealing customers' money and fraudulence.
The couple was later sent to jail .
7 get life term for murder in Chattogram
A Chattogram court on Wednesday sentenced seven people to life imprisonment for killing a youth and hacking another in Karnafuli upazila of Chattogram.
The lifers are- Md Azam, Faruq, Ali Azgar, Shawkat Hossain, Omar Uddin, Ashraful Alam Sumon and Md Parvez.
Judge AKM Mozammel Haque Chowdhury of the Chattogram Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal handed down the verdict, said Ayub Khan, public prosecutor (PP) of the tribunal.
The court also sentenced one of the convicts to additional 10 years in jail and fined Tk 10,000.
After the verdict was announced, five of the seven convicts present in the court were sent to jail and arrest warrants were issued against the other two.

According to the case, the convicts hacked Mamunur Rashid Mamun to death for protesting against drugs and eve-teasing in Shahmirpur area of Karnafuli upazila on September 26 in 2018. They also hacked Mamun’s friend Aziz, leaving him seriously injured.
A case was filed at Karnafuli police station in this regard.
On March 11, 2019, the police submitted chargesheet against the seven. The court framed charges against the accused on January 5 last year.
Illegal brick kilns: HC summons DoE DG, 5 DCs on contempt of court charge
The High Court on Wednesday summoned deputy commissioners of five districts and Directorate General of Department of Environment (DoE) to appear before it on May 17 for not fully complying with its order to raze illegal brick kilns in Dhaka and its adjacent districts to check air pollution .
The HC bench of Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam and Justice Mohi Uddin Shamim passed the order after hearing a contempt of court petition.

The deputy commissioners summoned are DCs of Dhaka, Narayanganj, Munshiganj, Manikganj and Gazipur districts.
Advocate Manzil Murshid stood for the writ petitioner while deputy attorney general Kazi Mainul Hasan and Advocate Amatul Karim represented the state and the DoE respectively.
Manzil Murshid said the High Court passed a number of orders to prevent air pollution in Dhaka. It also sought a list of illegal brick kilns in Dhaka and its adjacent districts, he said adding 318 brick kilns were found unregistered and the HC asked the authorities concerned to stop operation of those brick kilns.
Recently, a journalist in an investigative report said many brick kilns in Savar are still continuing their operation but the DCs said they had taken steps to stop their operation, said Manzil.
Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh drew the attention of the court in this regard and filed a writ petition on January 21, 2019.

On January 13, 2020, the High Court issued a nine-point order and asked the authorities concerned to implement those.
After taking steps in February, last year, the air pollution reduced remarkably but recently, Dhaka against ranked first in the list of Air Pollution chart of Air Quality Index.
Later, the Human Rights organisation filed a supplementary petition to the High Court for stopping operation of the illegal brick kilns.
