Constable posted at SP bungalow shoots himself dead
A police constable on Friday died by reportedly ‘shooting himself’ with his own gun while on duty at the residence of Dhaka district superintendent of police.
The deceased was identified as Mehedi Hasan, 26.
He was posted as a guard at the bungalow of Dhaka District Superintendent of Police Maruf Hossain Sarder in Ramna.
SP Maruf Hossain Sarder confirmed the incident to UNB.
”I immediately reached the spot of the incident after hearing the gunshot and found him lying on the ground. He sustained a single bullet wound under the chin from his own gun,” the SP said.
Police personnels rushed him to the emergency unit of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead at around 5:15 pm, according to sources within the law enforcement agency.
Md. Bachchu Mia, in-charge inspector of DMCH police outpost, also backed up the information.
The body of the deceased was kept in the hospital morgue for autopsy, Bacchu added.
Detained Piyasha and Mou placed on remand again
A Dhaka court on Friday again granted remand for models Faria Mahabub Piyasha and Mariam Akter Mou for 7 days and 4 days respectively in a case filed under Narcotics Control Act.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court passed the order on Friday.
Piyasha was produced before the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court after a 3-day remand. Later, the investigating officer of the case appealed for a seven-day remand in the case with the Gulshan police station.
Besides, the investigating officer of the case appealed for another 10-days remand including showing arrest in Bhatara police station and 7-days remand with showing arrest in Khilkhet police station.

On the other hand, after the 3-day remand of the alleged Maryam Akhter Mou, the police produced her in court and again appealed for a 10-day remand.
After hearing both sides, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury remanded the accused Piyasha for seven days in three cases and Mou for four days.
On Monday, a Dhaka court placed models Faria Mahabub Piyasha and Mariam Akter Mou on 3-day remand each for questioning over a large amount of liquor, Yaba and lead found at their residences.
Detective Branch (DB) of the police arrested model and presenter Faria Mahabub Piyasha from her house in Baridhara and another model Mariam Akter Mau from Mohammadpur on early hours Sunday.
Pori Moni placed on 4-day remand
A Dhaka court on Thursday night placed actress Shamsunnahar Smrity alias Pori Moni on a 4-day remand in a case under the Narcotics Control Act.Besides Raj Multimedia owner Nazrul Islam Raj and his two associates Ashraful Islam Dipu and Shobuj have also been placed on 4-day remand each on two different cases filed against them under the Narcotics Act.The court of Dhaka Metropolitan magistrate Mamunur Rashid passed the order after the investigation officer of Banani police station Sohel Rana produced them before the court and sought a 7-day remand for each of them.

HC seeks explanation over punishing children under child marriage restraint act
The High Court on Thursday asked mobile court judge Assistant Commissioner (land) Rajia Sultana to submit an explanation why two children were punished under Child Marriage Restraint Act in Atpara upajila of Netrakona district.
The bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim passed the order to submit the explanation by August 26 to the Attorney General’s office and a copy of it to the High Court through the district magistrate.
Meanwhile, the court expressed displeasure over mobile courts passing orders from court chambers stressing the examples of punishing a farmer for killing sparrows in the Barguna and Netrakona incident.
The court said, for the last few months news media are publishing report of magistrates passing mobile court orders long after the incident sitting in court rooms or police stations.
The court said this is not how mobile courts should conduct rather the court has to pass the order being present at the spot according to regulations.

During the hearing, the court suggested the attorney general to talk with the secretary of cabinet division for training up the magistrates.
Attorney General AM Amin Uddin agreeing with the court said soon the cabinet division secretary will be contacted about the matter.
On August 1, the marriage of two 15-year olds, who were involved in a romantic relationship, was held by their families in the Duoj union of the Atpara upazila in Netrakona.
Informed of it, executive Magistrate AC land Rajia Sultana brought the two children to her office and sent them to Gazipur Child Development Centre for one month as punishment.
On August 4, Supreme Court lawyer Md Shihir Monir brought the matter to justice M Enayetur Rahim’s attention by sending a letter through e-mail and asked to release the two children.

Soon after getting the letter the High Court ordered the release of the children.
Meanwhile the district magistrate released the two children after settling the case and asked for an explanation from the executive magistrate Rajia Sultana.
Following which the High Court held a hearing on Thursday where advocate Md Shishir Monir stood for the petitioner and advocate SM Rezaul Karim presented the Bangladesh Legal Aids Services Trust (BLAST).
Meanwhile Attorney General AM Amin Uddin, Deputy Attorney General Samarendra Nath Biswas and Bipul Bagmar presented the state side.
2 ‘associates’ of Pori Moni-Raj placed on remand
A Dhaka court on Thursday sent Sharful Hasan alias Mishu Hassan and Md. Masudul Islam alias Jisan on remand on different terms in as many as five cases filed against them.They are reportedly members of an organised gang led by popular actress Pori Moni and Nazrul Islam Raj, owner of Raj Multimedia.Besides, model and former TV presenter Faria Mahbub Piyasha has also been reported to be involved with the gang.Mishu was placed on a nine-day remand in three cases filed with Bhatara Police Station under the Arms Act, Narcotics Control Act and Pornography Act.Besides, Jisan was placed on a seven-day remand against a 27-day remand prayer in three cases filed with Bhatara and Khilkhet Police stations under the Narcotics Control Act, Special Powers Act and Pornography Act.The court of Metropolitan Magistrate Md Mamunur Rashid passed the orders after five investigating officers of the cases, submitted separate remand prayers.Earlier today, Commander Khandaker Al Moin, director of Legal and Media Wing of Rab, briefed reporters about Pori Moni’s detention at its headquarters in the afternoon.The Rab official further said that the duo were ringleaders of an organised gang.They carried out their activities in different posh areas of the capital including Gulshan, Baridhara, Banani, targeting people from affluent society and selling drugs in the name of party or DJ party. “Pori Moni had a mini bar at her residence and it was often used as the venue for such parties,” said Commander Moin.The elite force on Tuesday night arrested Sharful Hasan alias Mishu Hasan ,31, and his accomplice Md. Masudul Islam alias Jisan ,39, along with firearms and huge stash of contraband items from Bashundhara Residential Area, he said.A firearm, 6 rounds of ammunition, 13,300 pieces of yaba, an expensive Ferrari car, 2 laptops, several mobile phones, cheque books of various banks and ATM cards, passports of different countries and Indian counterfeit currency (Rs. 49,500) were seized during the raid.The Rab spokesperson said that the raids on the residents of Pori Moni and Raj were carried out based on specific information provided by Mishu and Jisan following their arrests.
15-member committee formed to run Bangladesh Bar Council
The government has formed a 15-member ad hoc committee to run the Bangladesh Bar Council.
A notification was issued by the Law and Justice Department of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs over the matter on August 3.

Golam Sarwar, the secretary of the ministry confirmed the news to UNB on Wednesday.
“The government constituted the 15-member ad hoc bar council with the powers conferred on it by paragraph (8) of the Bangladesh Legal Practitioners and Bar Council Order, 1972 (Presidential Order No. 46 of 1972),” he said.
Advocate AM Amin Uddin, the attorney general of Bangladesh will be the chairman of the committee.
According to the notification, this committee will serve till June 30, 2022. The Ad Hoc Bar Council will complete the election of the Bar Council on or before May 31, 2022, and the elected Bar Council will assume its responsibilities on July 1, 2022.
The committee was formed as the election of the Bar Council was not held in time due to Covid-19 pandemic, added the law secretary.
HC gives 15 days to settle fate of 18 imported Brahman-breed cows
The High Court on Tuesday ordered the customs to settle within 15 days a company’s appeal to handover to it 18 Brahman-breed cows seized at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport last month.
An HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim passed the order virtually after hearing a petition filed by Imran Hossain, owner of Sadek Agro Farm at Mohammadpur that claimed to have imported the herd from the US.
Barrister Ruhul Kuddus and Barrister Mehedi Hasan stood for the petitioner while deputy attorney general Bipul Bagmar represented the state.

Imran filed a petition seeking the release of 18 imported Brahman-breed cows seized by customs officials at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on July 5, to his custody.
On Monday, a writ petition was filed with the High Court seeking the release of the cows, which are now at Savar Dairy Farm under the care of Livestock Department.
Barrister Mehedi Hasan filed the petition on behalf of Imran Hossain.

“The cows were imported from the US and arrived on a Turkish Airlines flight. We seized them as the import of Brahman-breed cows is not legal in the country,” Md Abdus Sadek, deputy commissioner (preventive) of Dhaka Customs House said.
The market value of each cow is Tk 12-15 lakh.
Helena Jahangir put on 14-day remand in four cases
A Dhaka court on Tuesday placed ‘Joyjatra IPTV’ chairman Helena Jahangir, recently removed from the Awami League sub-committee on women affairs, on a 14-day remand in four separate cases.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shahinur Rahman placed her on a 4-day remand each in two cases –one over fraud and another under the Telecommunication Act- filed with the city’s Pallabi police station.
The court passed the order when police produced her before the court after the end of her 3-day remand.

Besides, Metropolitan Magistrate Nivana Khayer Jessy placed the accused on a 3-day remand each in two cases filed with Gulshan police station under the Digital Security Act and Narcotics Control Act
On July 30, the court placed Helena Jahangir on a three-day remand in the case filed under the DSA.
Earlier on July 31, police sought 5-day remand for interrogating her in the Narcotics case and 7-day in the case under filed under the Telecommunication Act.

Public prosecutor Abdullah Abu represented the state side during the hearing of two cases filed with the Gulshan police station.
Lawyer Shafiqul Islam on behalf of Helena Jahangir submitted a petition seeking cancellation of remand.
On July 29, members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested Helena Jahangir, 49, from her residence in the city’s Gulshan-2 area.
Attack on Patia police station: 3 Hefazat men get HC bail
The High Court on Tuesday granted bail to three activists of Hefazat-e-Islam in a case filed with Patiya Police Station of Chattogram for attack on police station and assaulting on-duty policemen on March 26.
The HC bench of Justice JBM Hassan passed the order after hearing a petition.
Those who secured bail are Maulana Mufti Ariful Islam, Imtiaz Hossain and Belal Uddin.

On March 26, some Hefazat men brought out a procession and carried out attack on Patiya Police Station.
On March 30, Borhanuddin, officer-in-charge of Patiya Police Station filed a case against 700 activists of Hefazat—e-Islam.
Police on April 10 arrested the three accused.

Beside, the HC also granted bail to another Hefazat man identified as Manir Sardar of Mollarhat upazila in Bagerhat district in a case filed with Mollarhat Police Station.
On April 22, police arrested Manir Sardar.
Special BCS: HC will not intervene in appointing doctors
The High Court on Monday rejected a writ petition seeking appointment of doctors from among the successful candidates of 39th special Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) examination, saying it won’t intervene in this matter.
During hearing of the writ the bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim said it’s a matter of government’s policy and so the court won’t be intervening in the decision of how many doctors will be appointed from which BCS.
Senior advocate Yousuf Hossain Humayun and advocate Md Moshiur Rahman presented the petitioners’ side at the court while Deputy Attorney General Bipul Bagmar presented the state side.

On July 29, a writ petition with the court seeking direction on appointing doctors from passed candidates of 39th BCS examination. Advocate Md Moshiur Rahman submitted the petition on behalf of Dr Rafa Md Nurul Islam and 1,360 other passed candidates in the 39th BCS examinations.
Advocate Md Moshiur Rahman said, 13,219 candidates were recommended for appointment after passing the final examination of 39th special BCS which was held in 2018.
Of them 4,562 were appointed in the health cadre in the first phase and the Public Service Commission (PSC) said others will be appointed later as non-cadre later as no position was vacant that time.
Last year, 2,000 more doctors were appointed from the recommended candidates as Covid-19 situation overwhelmed the health sector.
Recently the government announced to appoint 4,000 new doctors in the health sector from the recommended candidates of 42nd special BCS.
