2002 attack on Hasina's motorcade: 4 get life imprisonment, 44 others 7 years’ jail
A Satkhira court on Tuesday sentenced four people, including former MP and BNP leader Habibul Islam Habib, to life term imprisonment and 44 others to 7 years’ jail in two separate cases filed over the attack on then opposition leader Sheikh Hasina's motorcade in Satkhira in 2002
Among the convicts, Habibul Islam Habib, Abdul Quader Bachchu and Ronju were sentenced to life term imprisonment in an arms case and Habiul Islam Habib, Abdul Quader Bachchu, Ronju and Ripon were sentenced to life term jail in an explosives case.
The court sentenced the remaining 44 accused to seven years jail in the two cases.
Satkhira Special Tribunal-3 Judge Bishwanath Mandal pronounced the judgement around 10:30am.
A total 35 accused, including former BNP lawmaker Habibul Islam Habib, were present at the court. Of the total 50 accused, two have already died and 13 are absconding.
3 held with 2,500-kg VGF rice in Magura
Law enforcement agencies have detained three people with 2,500-kg VGF (Vulnerable Group Feeding) rice from a house at Tiorkhali village in Magura upazila.
The detainees are Abul Kalam, Hasan Mondol and Khoir Ali of the area.
The seizure was made after a team led by Shalikha police raided the house on Saturday night and detained them with the rice, said Mosharraf Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of the police station.
Legal action will be taken against the detainees, added the OC.
Fardin’s death: Dhaka court orders further investigation by CID
A Dhaka court on Sunday ordered the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate further the case filed over the death of BUET student Fardin Noor Parash.
Metropolitan Magistrate Md Shanta Islam Mallik passed the order following a no-confidence petition filed by the plaintiff of the case, Noor Uddin Rana, against the final investigation report submitted by Detective Branch (DB).
Prakash Ranjan Biswas, the plaintiff’s lawyer said the court set May 24 as the date for submission of the investigation report.

Earlier on February 6, DB Police Inspector Yasin Sikder, the investigation officer of the case, submitted the final report clearing Amatullah Bushra -- the accused in the case -- of all charges.
Police recovered Fardin’s body from the Shitalakhkhya River, behind a cotton mill at Siddhirganj, on November 7, three days after he went missing.
Kazi Nuruddin Rana, Fardin’s father, filed a case in connection with his son’s killing with Rampura Police Station.
In the case, Amatullah Bushra, a friend of Fardin and also a 3rd year student of East West University and other unidentified people were made accused. Police arrested Bushra after the case was filed.

On November 10, the court placed Bushra on a five-day remand. After the remand on November 16, the court denied her bail and sent her to jail.
Bushra was granted bail on January 8.
SSC examinee stabbed dead over love affairs in N’ ganj
A 16-year-old Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinee was stabbed to death allegedly by his rivals over love affairs in Narayanganj’s Rupganj upazila on Saturday.
The deceased identified as Mehedhi Hasan Sajeeb was the SSC examinee from Rupganj’s Bhulta High School and College this year and son of Shafiqul Islam of Chapainawabganj district. He used to live with his family in a rented house at Balaikha village under the upazila.
The victim had love affairs with one of the female classmates. Some local teenagers came to know about the matter and asked him to refrain from continuing the relationship.
As a consequence of this, a group of teenagers numbering 10 to 12 equipped with locally-made weapons called him to come out of the classroom when he was sitting for a model test around 11:30am.
As soon as he came out of the school, the teenagers stabbed him with weapons leaving him dead on the spot.
AFM Sayed, officer-in-charge of Rupganj police station, confirmed the murder saying that the body was sent to Narayanganj 300-Bed Hospital morgue for autopsy.
A process was underway to file a case in this connection, he added.
1 stabbed dead in clash over trivial matter in Kishoreganj
A man was stabbed to death and two others were injured in an attack allegedly by their rivals over a trivial matter in Kishoreganj sadar upazila on Saturday, police said.
The deceased was identified as Manjil Miah, 45, son of late Bachhir Uddin while the injured are his brother’s wife Asma Akter, 45, and nephew Mizan, 25, of Dampatuli village in the upazila.
Police and locals said Siraj Uddin used to call Mizan, owner of a poultry farm, a thief. An altercation broke out between them over the matter at the poultry farm on Friday afternoon.
As a sequel to the altercation, a group of miscreants attacked Mizan’s uncle Manjil with locally-made sharp weapons just before beginning of arbitration over the Friday’s incident, they said.
Manjil sustained severe injuries in the attack while his sister-in-law and nephew were also injured as they tried to save him, they stated.
The injured were rushed to Shahid Syed Nazrul Islam Medical College Hospital where physicians declared Manjil dead upon arrival while the rest are now receiving treatment, said Mohammad Daud, officer-in-charge of Sadar Model Police Station.
Though no case has so far been filed in this connection, drives are on to arrest the suspects , the OC added.
Gold worth Tk 82 lakh seized at Dhaka airport; one held
Members of Airport Armed Police on Friday detained a man along with 823.52gm of gold from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
The detainee is Salekuzzaman, a driver of civil aviation.
Mohammad Ziaul Haque, additional superintendent of Airport Armed Police Battalion police, said Salekuzzaman entered the terminal using gate number 21 at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. He then collected gold bars and gold chains from the toilet of luggage belt number 1.
Armed police challenged him due to his suspicious movement at the airport while crossing the customs green channel with the gold.
Later, during interrogation he confessed that he was carrying five gold bars and fifty chains worth Tk 82 lakh in his pockets which were recovered later.
The Airport Armed Police Battalion has been carrying out special anti-smuggling operations since April 12 ahead of Eid.
This campaign will be intensified, he added.
Preparations are underway to file a case at the airport police station under criminal law in this regard, the ASP said.
Man held for killing sister in Savar
Police arrested a man for allegedly strangling his sister to death at Bagnibari village in Savar's Birulia on Friday.
The arrestee is identified as Mohammad Ali, son of Kotu Fakir of the village, said Additional Superintendent of Police Abdullahil Kafi in a press conference.
Earlier on Wednesday night, Muhammad Ali suffocated his sister Honufa to death following a dispute over inheritance of land.
A case was filed at Savar Model Police Station following a complaint lodged by the victim's husband Harun or Rashid Tushar.
Later, police arrested Mohammad Al today.
Primarily, Muhammad Ali confessed to the murder, added ASP Abdullahil Kafi.
Moreover, police sent him to court seeking 10 days remand.
Tarique, Zubaida indicted in graft case
A Dhaka court on Thursday framed charges against BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman and his wife Zubaida Rahman in a graft case filed against them for acquiring wealth beyond their known sources of income and concealing information in their affidavits.
With charge framing the formal trial in the case against them began.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special judge Md Asaduzzaman passed the order in absence of both the accused.
The court also ordered that Tarique and Zubaida will not be allowed to fight the legal battle through a lawyer.
Earlier, on November 01, 2022, a Dhaka court issued arrest warrants for Tarique and Dr Zubaida in the graft case.
The court also ordered to give notice in the newspaper to appear before the court on January 19.
On June 26, the High court ordered the judicial court to dispose of the case as soon as possible.
The HC also rejected the couple’s writ petitions, challenging the corruption case against them.
As both of them remain fugitives, the court rejected the writ petitions – saying these are not acceptable.
The court also withdrew the stay order on the trial proceedings of the case filed against them.
On September 26, 2007, ACC lodged a complaint with Kafrul police against Tarique Rahman, Zubaida and her mother Iqbal Mand Banu for amassing illegal wealth worth Tk 4.81 crore and concealing the information.
In the same year, the High Court issued a rule suspending the trial proceedings in the case after hearing a petition filed by Zubaida.
In 2008, a charge sheet was filed against three people.
The HC rejected the rule in 2017 and asked her to surrender before the court within eight weeks.
Airport Armed Police launch special drive to prevent smuggling during Eid
The Airport Armed Police Battalion has launched a special operation to prevent smuggling on the occasion of the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr.
The battalion seized 973 grams of gold, 104 mobile phones, 50 cartons of cigarettes, 35 kg of beauty creams, two laptops and 600 grams of liquor in a day-long special drive on Wednesday (April 12), Mohammad Ziaul Haque, additional superintendent of the force, said.
The market value of the seized goods is around Tk 1.5 crore, he said.
The goods were seized from Ismail Hossain, Zaker Ullah, Nazrul Islam, Mohammad Forkan, Abdullah Al Faruk, Jahidul Islam Nayan, Mohammad Hossain, Helal Uddin, Abu Sufian, Mohammad Hasan Mahmud, Shahidul Islam, Mohammad Ayat Ullah and Md Amran Hossain. They returned home from Dubai, Saudi Arabia and Oman, according to the Airport Armed Police.
Ziaul Haque said: “A smuggling group has been very active on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr. We’ll be conducting regular drives based on information.”
The seized items have been handed over to the customs authorities and legal action has been taken, he added.
29 fishermen punished in Chandpur for violating ban on catching Hilsa
A mobile court in Chandpur on Sunday sentenced and fined 29 fishermen for violating a temporary fishing ban in the Padma-Meghna sanctuary.
The mobile court led by Haimchar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Chai Thoaila Chowdhury imposed the penalties.
One year imprisonment was awarded to 23 of the fishermen, while six were released considering their age after fining Tk 1,000 each, according to Md Mahbub Rashid, an assistant fisheries officer of Haimchar upazila.
Earlier, members of Coast Guard, in association with the district’s fisheries department, detained 29 people for violating the fishing ban in the sanctuary, he said. During the drive, the law enforcers seized about 2 lakh meters of current nets and 50 kg of ‘Jatka’ from the fishermen.
The seized jatkas were distributed among the local poor and orphans, and the nets were burnt.
A two-month ban on catching 'jatka' (hilsa fry less than 9 inches or 23 centimetres in length) is in place from March 1 to April 30 in five hilsa sanctuaries across the country.
Those who violate the ban are subjected to a maximum of two years imprisonment, a fine of Tk 5,000, or both.
