Police sue 20 including death row convicts who escaped from Dhaka court
Police filed a case against 20 people including the two death row convicts in publisher Faisal Arefin Dipan murder case who were snatched from a Dhaka Court lock-up on Sunday.
The case was lodged around afternoon at the capital's Kotwali police station, said Khondaker Golam Faruq, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner while visiting the spot in the evening.
The escapees are Md Abu Siddique Sohel alias Sakib alias Sajid alias Shahab and Moinul Hasan Shamim alias Samir alias Sifat alias Imran. They are members of banned militant outfit Ansar al-Islam, who were sentenced to death in Jagriti Publications publisher Faisal Arefin Dipan murder case.
Police earlier announced Tk 10 lakh for information on each of them.

“The convicts sprayed something on the eyes of two policemen and escaped while they were being taken to the court. We’re searching for them in the nearby areas. Publisher Dipan, son of Prof Abul Kashem Fazlul Huq of Dhaka University, was hacked to death in his office on the second floor of Aziz Supermarket at Shahbagh in the city on October 31, 2015.
A case was filed with Shahbagh Police Station the following day and later the case was transferred to Detective Branch.
Police on November 15, 2019, pressed charges against the eight Ansar-Al-Islam men in the case.
On February 10, 2021, Dhaka Anti-Terrorism Tribunal sentenced eight militants to death.

The six other death-row convicts in the case are Md Abdus Sabur alias Abdus Samad alias Sujan alias Raju alias Sad, Khairul Islam alias Jamil alias Rifat alias Fahim alias Jisan, Mozammel Hossain alias Saimon alias Shashriar, Md Sheikh Abdullah alias Jubayer alias Jayed alias Javed, Syed Ziaul Hoque, a suspended major of Bangladesh Army who is known as Sagar alias Ishtiaq alias Borobhai, and Akram Hossain alias Hasib alias Abir alias Adnan alias Abdullah.
Among the convicts, Sayed Ziaul Hoque and Akram Hossain-- have been absconding since the killing.
HC issues rule on compensation for daily labourers jailed by mobile court
The High Court on Sunday issued a rule asking the government to explain as to why the two daily wagers of Khagrachhari district, who were sentenced to five-day jail through a mobile court, should not be provided Tk 10 lakh as compensation.
The HC bench of Justice Zafar Ahmed and Justice Md Akhtaruzzaman issued the rule following a petition.
The court also issued another rule asking the government to explain as to why the punishment provided to the two daily wagers—Abul Kalam and Ruhul Amin—should not be declared illegal.
The court also asked the Ramgarh Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Khagrachhari district, Khandaker Ikhtier Uddin Arafat to refrain from conducting mobile court drive for punishing the two daily wagers until the disposition of the rule.

Secretary to the Public Administration Ministry and Khagrachhari Deputy Commissioner have been asked to implement the order.
Barrister Hasan SM Azim stood for the writ petitioner while Assistant Attorney General AMG Sarwar Payel represented the state.
On October 23, a writ petition was filed seeking its directives to not to allow Khagrachhari Ramgarh UNO Ikhtier to conduct any mobile court drive by sitting at this office though there is a provision that UNO should punish people after visiting the spot through mobile court.
On August 5, a report was published at a daily vernacular saying that Khargachhari Ramgarh Local Administration and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) had a dispute over a piece of land in the upazila.
On August 1, UNO Ikhtier sentenced two day labourers to five-day jail while they were engaged in erecting fence on the disputed land.
JCD leader’s death in Brahmanbaria: 150 BNP men sued
A case was filed on Sunday accusing 150 BNP men of attempting to snatch away arms from police during a clash with supporters of the main opposition BNP in Bancharampur upazila of the district on Saturday afternoon.
Afzal Hossain Khan, sub-inspector of Bancharampur police station, filed the case, naming 17 BNP men including the upazila unit’s former Organising Secretary Md Rafiql Islam and 137 others without names.
On the other hand, leaders and activists of the BNP and its associate bodies held a protest procession in the upazila and demanded justice for the murder.
A tense situation was prevailing in the upazila over the Saturday’s clash that left a Jatiyatabi Chattra Dal leader dead and several others injured.

Molla Md Shaheen, additional superintendent of the district police, said a case was filed on behalf of the police over the attempts to snatch arms from police.
“An investigation was going on to unearth the reason for the murder and the exact reason will be known after getting the autopsy report,” he said.
On Saturday afternoon, the JCD leader was shot to death in a clash between police and the BNP men over the arrest of one of their leaders in the upazila.
The deceased was identified as Nayon Miah, 22, vice president of Sonarampur union parishad unit JCD and son of Rahmat Ullah of Charshibpur under the upazila.
Several people including six policemen and BNP activists were also injured in the clash while two BNP men were detained in this connection.
The BNP men distributed leaflets among general people to woo them to join their Cumilla’s grand rally slated for November 26.
After the publicity, they brought out a procession led by local leader VP Sayeduzzaman from the Molla Bari area and again gathered there after parading several roads.
Meanwhile, a team of police led by the OC took a position in front of the Bari and tried to pick Sayeduzzaman up from the spot while the BNP men were resisting.

At one stage, the police and the BNP men locked into an altercation which resulted in pelting brickbats and opening several rounds of bullets around 4pm, they claimed.
Nayon fell down after being hit by a bullet and several others also sustained injuries in the attack,
He was first rushed to Bancharampur Upazila Health Complex. Later he was shifted to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital where physicians pronounced him dead on arrival around 7:30pm.

AIG of media, Police Headquarters, Md Manzur Rahman told UNB that a total of Tk 20 lakh as prize money has been announced from police for assisting in catching the militants who fled court premises.

Militants flee Dhaka Court: Red Alert issued, says Home Minister
Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan has said that the government has issued red alert at all the entry and exit points of the country to nab the two Ansar al-Islam members who escaped from the premises of a lower court in Dhaka on Sunday (November 20, 2022) noon.
The minister said this while talking to journalists at his Secretariat office.
“Police are looking for them everywhere. I hope we’ll be able to apprehend them soon. We’ve told law enforcement agencies to beef up their surveillance at the border areas so that they (the convicts) can’t leave the country,” Asaduzzaman said.

Asked how the militants escaped, the home minister said that pepper spray was used on policemen before the duo fled.
“The two Ansar al-Islam members were brought to the court earlier today and were kept in the lock-up. After producing them before a magistrate, police were taking them back to the lock-up when some of their accomplices emerged out of nowhere, used pepper spray on the police and whisked the militants away,” Asaduzzaman said.
The home minister added that exemplary punishment will be given to those found responsible for negligence in duties.

“Militants escaping from the hands of the police is an unfortunate incident. We’ll form a probe body and take necessary steps so that such occurrences don’t happen again,” added Asaduzzaman.

6 arrested over ex-BCL leader Biplab’s death
Police have arrested six staff of a launch from Keraniganj area of the capital over the death of former BCL leader Duranta Biplab, whose body was found in the Buriganga river on November 12.
The arrestees were Hafez Md Saidur Rahman, 38, Alamin, 35, Md Masud Rana, 38, Emon Hossain, 23, Md Salman, 21, and Ibrahim Khalil, 29. They all are drivers and technical persons of ‘Morning Sun’ launch.
Tipped off, the Detective Brunch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested them after conducting drive in Keraniganj on Saturday, said Deputy Commissioner (DB-Lalbagh Division) of DMP Mashiur Rahman.

Biplab, 51, ex-general secretary of BCL Jahangirnagar University unit and also a former member of the Agriculture and Cooperative Sub-Committee of the Central Awami League, went missing while going to Mohammadpur from Keraniganj to meet his mother on November 7.
The body of was fished out from the Buriganga river in Jajira area of South Keraniganj on November 10.

After scrutinizing the CCTV footage of the area, police confirmed that Biplab drowned in the river when launch ‘Morning Sun’ hit his boat on his way back to home for delivering vegetables on November 7.
25 BNP activists sued over recovery of crude bombs in Natore
Two cases were filed against 25 BNP activists in connection with the recovery of five crude bombs and two bomb-like objects from beside the party office early Sunday.
Lalpur police station’s sub-inspector Himadri Haldar and local Jubo League activist Shariful Newaz filed the cases under the Explosive Substances Act against the BNP men including municipality unit BNP convener Nazrul Islam Mollah.
According to the cases’ statements, miscreants hurled crude bombs targeting Jubo League men from in front of the BNP office around 8.45pm on Saturday.
Sharif Al Rajib, additional superintendent of police (Lalpur circle) of the district, said they later recovered five crude bombs and two bomb-like objects from beside the office. Later police sealed the office.

Earlier on November 15 night, some activists of ruling Awami League allegedly vandalised the party office when a meeting led by the accused Nazrul Islam was being held there.
Monowaruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Lalpur police station, said no one has yet been arrested in this connection.
80 gold bars seized from Jashore border
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have seized 80 gold bars weighing 9.28 kg from Kashipur-Shahzadpur border in Chougachha upazila of Jashore.
Tipped off, a team of BGB conducted a drive near the border on Saturday evening noticing suspicious movement of two Bangladeshi farmers, said Lt Col Shahed Minhaj Siddiqui, commanding officer of BGB-49 battalion.

The farmers fled the scene when BGB men challenged them.The law enforcers later noticed two more farmers’ roaming near the border at that time.
Later, they found 80 gold bars worth Tk 8.32 crore in four large bundles wrapped with adhesive tape in a pepper field there, said the Commander.
The seized gold bars will be deposited in the government treasury through necessary legal action.

Termination of 3 Khulna University teachers illegal: High Court
The High Court has declared the termination of three teachers of Khulna University (KU) illegal.
The court also asked KU to reinstate the three teachers – Bangla discipline's Assistant Professor Abul Fazal, Bangla discipline's Lecturer Shakila Alam and History and Civilisation discipline's Lecturer Haimanti Shukla Kabery – in their jobs.
The High Court bench of Justice Md Mozibur Rahman Miah and Justice Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo came up with the order Thursday after hearing a rule issued earlier, writ petitioner's counsel Jyotirmoy Barua said.
On February 9 in 2021, following a writ petition filed by the teachers, the court issued a status quo on their termination. It also issued a rule asking KU and the government to explain in four weeks why the termination should not be declared illegal.

On January 28, KU decided to terminate the teachers for expressing solidarity with a student movement at the university in 2020, Barua said.
On January 1, 2020, the KU students staged a protest on the campus to press home their demands, including the reduction of tuition fees and proper accommodation.
