With all the restaurants and hotels in the town staying closed, the self-motivated initiative by the district police drew much appreciation here.
Md Anwar Hossain, a reserve officer at the district police lines, said the day labourers, mostly hailed from northern districts, earn their livelihood working day-to-day in Faridpur.
But they are lying jobless due to the ongoing shutdown and are starving now.
Noticing the hardship they are going through, Superintendent of Faridpur Police Alimuzzaman made the arrangements to ensure that they don’t face food crisis while having Sehri in the month of Holy Ramadan, he said.
“We’re preparing foods and taking these to the day labourers at different spots in the district town,” he said, adding that it has been done since April 28.
Md Saifuzzaman, additional superintendent of Faridpur Police, said they took up the initiative after hearing that a day labourer didn’t get food for having Sehri few days ago.
“We initially provided the day labourers with two sacks of food. But they didn’t have necessary dishes to prepare these. Since then, we’re cooking foods and distributing those among them,” he added.

The additional SP revealed that they are trying to help people on humanitarian grounds despite having no allocation from the government.
“We’re trying to do something better for them with a portion of our salary,” he added.
