In Kurigram, four children – Habibullah, 6, from Hatia union of Ulipur upazila, another from Phulbari upazila and two other children from Chilmari upazila drowned under flood water as water of all the rivers were swelling persistently, said Civil Surgeon Dr Aminul Islam.
Identities of the rest of deceased were not available.
A total of 390 villages of 55 unions of the district were inundated while at least 350,000 people were living under the open sky in inhuman conditions.
Md Rumanuzzaman, Assistant Engineer of WDB said that the water of Dharla River is flowing 112 cm above the danger level while water of Brahamaputra River is flowing 108 cm and 79 cm above danger level at Chilmari and Nunkhawa points respectively.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Md Hafizur Rahman said they gave 15 kg rice to each of 2,000 families in three flood-hit areas of the district.
In Sirajganj, a minor child – Sumon, 10, drowned in Kazipur upazila on Sunday, said Ranjit Kumar Sarkar, Senior Officer of local Water Development Board.
At least 75,000 people remained marooned by flood water as onrush of water from the upstream and incessant rain persistently rising the water level of Jamuna River which is flowing 30 cm above the danger level on Monday.
Ranjit Kumar said Chouhali, Shahjadpur, Enayetpur, Kazipur, Belkuchi and low lying areas of Sadar, Tarash and Ullapara upazilas were inundated under flood water.
In Habiganj, three unions of Nabiganj upazila were affected as water level of Kushiyara River rose. 10 educational institutes were declared closed while already 90 percent areas of Digholbag union went under flood water. Besides, 40 percent of Inatganj union and 20 percent of Aushkandi union have been flooded.
Local administration distributed dry food among the flood-hit people but in spite of adequate reserves, rice was not distributed due to excessive rains. Tawhid Bin Hasan, Upazila executive officer said they would distribute rice on Tuesday. In Nabiganj upazila 6 primary schools, two high schools and two madrasas remained shut for the flood, he said.
Md Tawhidul Islam, Executive Engineer of Water Development Board said that the water of Khowai River is flowing 140 cm above the danger level while water of Kushiyara River was flowing 53 cm above the danger level.
Local Relief office said nine villages have been submerged in the upazila affecting 1100 families and three shelters have been installed for them.
The water level of Jamuna River in Bogura is rapidly rising due to heavy water flow from India’s Assam and Meghalaya state. The water of Jamuna is flowing 78 cm above the danger level at Mathurapara point of Sariakandi upazila.
Sudden flood already water stagnated nearly one lakh people in Sonatola, Sariakandi and Dhunat upazila. Flood-hit people have taken shelter at flood control embankments and shelter centers.
The local administration already distributed 2000 packets of dry food and 142 metric tonnes of rice as relief materials among the flood affected people.
In Lalmonirhat, water of Teesta and Dharla rivers have been flowing 22 cm and 55 cm above the danger level respectively. Thousands of families were marooned as 200 meters area of Kutirpar flood control embankment broke down in Aditmari upazila.
Although for past seven days people of shoal areas are water stagnated but yet to get any relief materials.
Local administration distributed 153 MT of rice and Tk 2,50,000 but most of the shoal-residing people failed to get them.
WDB Executive engineer of Dalia Division Rabiul Islam said the water has been receding in small amount as India has recently closed the water gates of its Gojoldona barrage.
