“It’s impossible to achieve the target unless there’s a proven customised technology in energy efficiency,” he said while addressing the inaugural session of a two-day international conference on energy efficiency and conservation awareness at Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in the city on Monday.
Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (Sreda) in association with Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Programme (Reeep) of German donor agency GIZ organised the conference to discuss and share experiences on energy efficiency and conservation issues.
Experts from eight countries -- Bangladesh, China, Japan, Germany, India, Vietnam, Nepal and Croatia -- are taking part in the conference.
Held with Sreda Chairman Helal Uddin in the chair, German chargé d' affaires in Dhaka Burkhard Ducoffre, Senior Secretary of the Power Division Dr Ahmad Kaikaus, Director General of Alternative Energy Promotion Centre of Nepal Nawa Raj Dhakal and Sreda Member Siddique Zobair also addressed the function.
Nasrul Hamid said the installed capacity of electricity generation has reached 20,000 MW and it is expected to stand at 40,000 MW by 2030 and 60,000 MW by 2041.
He said there is a target to mandatorily produce at least 10 percent of the total electricity from renewable energy sources as they are committed to achieving Sustainable Development Goals announced set by the United Nations.
“But the supply and distribution of electricity to the rural level won’t be sustainable in the long run if we aren’t aware about the energy efficiency and conservation,” the state minister told the conference.
As energy sources are limited, he said, everybody must be careful and responsible while using electricity.
Burkhard Ducoffre said Germany will continue to support Bangladesh to promote renewable energy, and ensure energy efficiency and conservation.
