Former Land Minister and Pabna district Awami League President Shamsur Rahman Sherif passed away at a hospital in the capital early Thursday. He was 80.
The five-time MP, also a freedom fighter, breathed his last around 5:30am at United Hospitals Ltd.
He had been suffering from various ailments and had been undergoing treatment at the ICU of the hospital for the last several days.
The senior Awami League leader was laid to eternal rest in state honour in the evening.
Shamsur Rahman Sherif was given state guard of honour in front of his residence in Iswardi municipality after his first namaj-e-janaza earlier in the day.
His second namaj-e-janaza was held at 6pm at his village in Lorgikunda of the upazila and later he was buried beside the grave of his parents at their family graveyard.
Meanwhile, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock at the death of the veteran politician.
They prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to bereaved family members
