Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury moved the obituary references separately with brief resumes on those who died after prorogation of fourth session of the current parliament.
The Speaker expressed deep shock over the deaths of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal executive president and MP Mayeen Uddin Khan Badal, former BNP minister and Dhaka City Corporation mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka, former deputy minister Humayun Kabir, former MP M Kofil Sonar, Awami League founder member and language veteran Dr M Rafiqul Bari, journalist and language veteran Muhammad Musa, noted artist Kalidas Karmakar and spiritual Buddhist leader and Ekushey Award recipient Satyapriyo Mahathero and some other noted persons.
Parliament also expressed profound shock over the deaths of many people caused in various incidents at home and abroad in recent past.
Participating in the obituary reference on the death of the sitting MP , Leader of the House and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid deep homage to the veteran parliamentarian and valiant freedom fighter Mayeen Uddin Khan Badal.
“Badal always believed in non-communal spirit and peace and harmony. His death has created a huge vacuum in the country’s political arena,” she said.
The Prime Minister recalled Badal’s active role in all the democratic and rights movements, including the liberation war, anti-Ayub and anti-autocracy, the six-point ones.
Hasina said Badal was actively involved with Chhtra League from his student life, and he joined Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) after the country’s liberation.
She said the JSD leader also played an active role in forming the 14-party alliance. “I’d a chance to work with him in different movements, struggles and in parliament. ”He played an outstanding role (in politics) with is political thinking, wisdom and spirit.”
The Prime Minster said she was deeply shocked hearing his death news in the morning as she could not imagine he would die in this way.
Mentioning that Badal’s wife used to give her update about his health condition, Hasina said Badal had a desire to join parliament soon. “It’s unfortunate for us that we would no longer listen to his very strong voice.”
The Prime Minister said they have taken steps to bring his body back home from India and an official of the Bangladesh High Commission has been asked to facilitate it.
She prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed her deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.
Deputy leader of the opposition in parliament, Raushon Ershad said the nation has lost a seasoned and modest parliamentarian at Badal’s death.
Both the ruling and opposition MPs, including Tofail Ahmed, Amir Hossain Amu, Mohammad Nasim, Abul Kalam Azad, Shajahan Khan, Mahiuddin Khan Alamgir, ASM Feroz, Hasanul Haq Inu, Rashed Khan Menon, Anisul Islam Mahmud and Mashiur Rahman Ranga spoke in the House.
The House conveyed deep sympathy to the members of the bereaved families and prayed for the lasting peace of their departed souls. The MPs observed a one-minute silence in the House as a mark of respect to the departed souls.
Later, a munajat was offered seeking eternal peace of the departed souls of the deceased.
As convention, the Speaker adjourned the sitting of the House after the munajat as mark of respect sitting MP Badal.
