The Appellate Division on Wednesday fined Stamford University and Dhaka International University Tk 10 lakh each for admitting over 50 students in their Law departments in violation of directives of the Bar Council and the University Grants Commission.
A four-member Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order. The court also directed that the fines be donated to the regular liver transplant unit of BIRDEM General Hospital.
Besides, it also upheld a High Court order that had directed Bar Council to provide opportunities to law students of the two universities to take part in the Bar Council Examination.
Advocate Moshiurzzaman stood for Bar Council while Advocate AM Amin Uddin represented Stamford and Advocate Rokanuddin Mahmud represented DIU.
Earlier the Bar Council took a decision not to give registration cards to the students of the law departments of 11 private universities but later 11,000 students filed writs challenging their decision.
