A Class-VI girl reportedly took her own life at Monnapra village in Sadar upazila early Monday by hanging herself hours after allegedly being raped by a young man.
The deceased was identified as Mariam Khatun, 13, daughter of late Mojibor Rahman of the village.
Victim’s mother Marjina Bewa found Mariam hanging from a tree by their house around 6am, police and locals said quoting her.
On information, police recovered the body and sent it to hospital morgue for autopsy.
The victim’s mother also filed a case with Sadar Police Station against Polash, 20, a mason and son of Ajit Ali of the village, on charge of raping the girl and instigating her to commit suicide.
She claimed that she caught Polash red-handed while he was raping the girl inside their house, but he fled the scene. “After the incident, I and my daughter went to sleep again, but I didn’t find Mariam inside the house when I woke up,” she said, adding that she found the girl hanging from the tree later.
Sub-inspector Manjurul Islam, also investigation officer of the case, said they arrested Polash before the case was filed against him.
Quoting the accused, he said Polash had been in love affairs with Mariam for the last year and he went to her house on Sunday night and stayed there overnight.
Mentioning that he left the house in the early hours, Polash said she might have committed suicide following a brawl with her mother, the police official quoted the accused as saying.
