In India, 40 workers are trapped in a tunnel for a 7th day as rescuers wait for a new drill
Forty workers were trapped in a collapsed road tunnel in northern India for a seventh day Saturday as rescuers waited for a new machine to drill through the rubble so they could crawl to their freedom.
On Friday, the drilling was interrupted when some machine bearings became damaged by the breaking of rocks and clearing of debris, officials said, adding a new challenge to the long-drawn rescue efforts.
A new machine was expected to reach the accident site later Saturday, allowing rescuers to start drilling again, said Vijay Singh, an officer at the control room.
Authorities began drilling into the rubble and debris on Thursday and have so far covered a stretch of 24 meters (79 feet), said Devendra Patwal, a disaster management official, said. It may require up to 60 meters (197 feet) to enable the trapped workers' escape, Patwal told The Associated Press on Friday.
Foreign secretary-level bilateral meeting with India likely in Delhi next week
Earlier, the rescuers had hoped to complete the drilling by Friday night and create an escape tunnel of pipes welded together. But rescue efforts hit a snag after a loud cracking sound came from within the tunnel, startling the authorities, who paused the drilling after they found parts of the machine damaged, Tarun Kumar Baidya, director at the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited, said from the accident site.
As the rescue operation stretched into its seventh day, families of those trapped were frustrated and angry. Relatives from various states have spent nights near the tunnel, seeking updates. The recent setback has only exacerbated their worries.
Krishna Patel, whose 20-year-old nephew is among the trapped, had hoped to see his relative on Friday.
"The administration keeps changing the timeline for when they may be rescued. It's very frustrating," he said.
Bangladesh's growth is India's growth: Shringla
Some of the workers felt fever and body aches Wednesday, but officials have said there has been no deterioration in their condition. Nuts, roasted chickpeas, popcorn and medicine are being sent to them via a pipe every two hours.
Patwal said two doctors at the accident site were in regular contact with the trapped workers to ensure their physical and mental well-being. "We are trying our best to keep the spirit of the trapped laborers high because it is a trying time for all — the rescuers as well as the trapped people," he said.
The construction workers have been trapped since Sunday when a landslide caused a portion of the 4.5-kilometer (2.8-mile) tunnel they were building to collapse about 200 meters (650 feet) from the entrance. The hilly area is prone to landslides and subsidence.
The site is in Uttarakhand, a mountainous state dotted with Hindu temples that attract many pilgrims and tourists. Highway and building construction has been constant to accommodate the influx.
The tunnel is part of the busy Chardham all-weather road, a flagship federal project connecting various Hindu pilgrimage sites.
It's up to Bangladeshis, their democratic system, says India about polls
About 200 disaster relief personnel have been at the site using drilling equipment and excavators in the rescue operation, with the plan to push 80-centimeter-wide (2.6-foot-wide) steel pipes through an opening of excavated debris.
A machine used earlier in the week was slow in pushing the pipes through the debris, a state government statement said. It was replaced with an American Auger machine with a drilling capacity of up to 5 meters (16 feet) per hour and is equipped with a 99-centimeter (3.2-foot) diameter pipe to clear debris. Rescuers are waiting for another American Auger to replace the damaged one.
State officials have contacted Thai experts who helped rescue a youth soccer team trapped in a cave in Thailand in 2018, state government administrator Gaurav Singh said. They also have approached the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute for possible help.
ICC World Cup 2023 Final: Preview of India vs Australia ODI
The last match of the 2023 Cricket World Cup is on Sunday, November 19, at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. India and Australia will play the final match, which will start at 2:30 pm Bangladesh time. The last time these two teams faced each other in a World Cup final was in 2003. Australia came out victorious, winning the game by 125 runs and securing their third World Cup trophy. Who do you think will win this time? Let's find out.
Preview of India vs Australia ODI in ICC World Cup 2023
From losing the first two matches to reaching the final, Australia really improved their game through the last eight matches. Pat Cummins' team has shown an impressive turnaround after losing their first two matches in the tournament. They secured their spot in the final with a tense win against South Africa.
The Eden Garden pitch was slow in the second semifinal, making it challenging for batsmen to score runs. Despite this, South Africa managed to post a total of 212 runs. However, Australia faced a tough task in chasing down this modest target. The struggle was evident as they teetered on the edge, but ultimately, they secured a spot in the final by winning the match with a margin of 3 wickets. The Australians faced considerable pressure from the Proteas, who managed to take 7 wickets. Despite this challenging situation, the Aussies made a comeback, securing a win thanks to the responsible batting of captain Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc. Starc finished the match not out with 16 runs, while Cummins contributed 14 runs.
Travis Head was the top scorer for the team with 62 runs. Additionally, Steve Smith added 30 runs to the total, while David Warner was dismissed after scoring 29 runs.

This marks the eighth time Australia is participating in the World Cup Final, having previously won the trophy five times.
Yet, if Australia emerges as the focal point by Sunday night, it indicates a significant setback for India. India will be looking for its third World Cup title at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday. Their last victory came in 2011 when they defeated Sri Lanka in the final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
India has been the most impressive team in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, winning all 10 games in the tournament. They concluded the group stage at the top with nine wins in nine games, comfortably defeating almost every team in the competition. Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, they secured a spot in the final by beating New Zealand in the semifinal at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium with a 70-run victory in a high-scoring match.
Previously, India effortlessly defeated Australia by six wickets in their initial group-stage encounter, and there are no indications that their momentum will fade. Everything suggests that they are on track to win the tournament on their home ground, just as they did in 2011.

Indian Players to Watch
Virat Kohli
Virat Kohli has surpassed Sachin Tendulkar's record for the most runs in a World Cup by scoring 711 runs, achieving this feat with a game to spare. Additionally, Kohli has now reached a milestone of 50 ODI centuries. As Virat is in great form, his performance in the final will be crucial.
Mohammed Shami
As it stands, Mohammed Shami has emerged as the leading wicket-taker in the tournament, an impressive feat considering he has played in only six matches. Shami's ability to consistently take wickets has undoubtedly contributed to his standout performance in the competition. And his 7 wicket haul in the last match was a record. So, Aussies will need to play Shami carefully in the final.
Rohit Sharma
In the 2023 ICC World Cup, Rohit Sharma has been the standout batsman for India, consistently delivering explosive starts that have frequently placed the team in advantageous positions. Further, he has a good record against Australia, scoring 2332 runs from 44 matches with 209 high scores.

Australian Players to Watch
David Warner
In the semi final against South Africa at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, David Warner reached an impressive achievement. He became the first Australian batsman to score 500 runs in two different ODI World Cup editions. Warner's skill as a left-handed batsman was clear when he accumulated 647 runs in the previous 2019 edition. Now, he joins an elite group, being only the third player to score over 500 runs in two World Cups. He is a reliable batter for big matches. So, he will surely show his skill in the final.
Adam Zampa
Adam Zampa's performance in the ICC World Cup 2023 has been truly impressive. Despite facing difficulties earlier in the tournament when he gave away 113 runs, Zampa showed flexibility and a champion's mentality. Taking on the responsibility as the sole spinner for Australia, he has claimed 22 wickets, making him the second-leading wicket-taker in the tournament.
Josh Hazlewood
Josh Hazlewood delivered an outstanding performance in the ICC World Cup 2023 semifinal against South Africa, making a significant impact in the early stage of the match. He played a key role in limiting the strong South African top order by taking the crucial wickets of Quinton de Kock and Aiden Markram. In his eight overs, he conceded only 12 runs, with seven of those runs coming from edges or false shots.
Final Words
India has secured ten victories out of ten matches in the ICC World Cup 2023 so far. The top battle will occur in the top order, where players like Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood need to stop Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli from making a strong start. However, even if they manage to do so, the in-form Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul add significant firepower. This offensive capability is supported by a well-rounded Indian bowling attack. So, India has maximum chances to win the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup final match against Australia.

ICC World Cup 2023 Semifinal: Preview of India vs New Zealand ODI
India and New Zealand are set to face off in the first semifinal of the ICC World Cup 2023 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on November 15 at 2:30 pm Bangladesh time. Led by Rohit Sharma, India secured the top spot by winning eight consecutive games. On the other hand, New Zealand earned a spot in the top four with five wins in nine matches. Ahead of the big match, let's review the condition of each team.
Preview of IND vs NZ ODI in the 2023 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup
India headed to the semifinal with great confidence as they won three consecutive matches against Sri Lanka, South Africa, and the Netherlands this month. In all three matches, they batted first and emerged victorious. In their previous encounter with New Zealand, India won the match while batting second.
India
In the midst of all the surprises and upsets that the 2023 ODI World Cup has delivered, one consistent factor stands out—India's unquestionable dominance throughout the tournament.
India has three of the top eight run-scorers in the 2023 Cricket World Cup. The former captain, Virat Kohli, leads the charts with 594 runs in nine innings, followed by current captain Rohit Sharma with 503 runs and batter Shreyas Iyer with 421 runs, both in nine innings each. This collective dominance is quite significant.
Furthermore, India has three bowlers among the top eight wicket-takers in the tournament. Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah leads with 17 wickets in nine innings, followed by fellow fast bowler Mohammed Shami with 16 wickets in five innings, and spinner Ravindra Jadeja with 16 wickets in nine innings. Mohammed Siraj is a bit further down the list with 12 wickets in nine innings.
Having won the Cricket World Cup twice, with the last victory in 2011, India is currently unbeaten at home and has several star players in excellent form. However, Hardik Pandya's absence from the squad could prove to be a significant factor for India, given that he was not only one of their key players but also served as the team's vice-captain. With Suryakumar Yadav taking his place at number 5 in the batting lineup, India has been playing with just five bowlers ever since Pandya was sidelined.
Shubman Gill's comeback after recovering from dengue has led to him consistently opening the batting alongside Sharma since the match against Pakistan on October 14. And getting Shubman regularly in the team is a plus point for India.

New Zealand
New Zealand should be thankful for securing four wins relatively early in their World Cup campaign, as they later experienced four consecutive defeats. However, a late victory over Sri Lanka pushed them into the semifinal stage of the tournament against the clear favorites for the title.
Opener Rachin Ravindra and all-rounder Daryl Mitchell stand out as the top run-scorers for the Black Caps at the 2023 Cricket World Cup. Ravindra has accumulated 565 runs in nine innings, whereas Mitchell has notched up 418 runs in eight innings, registering three centuries in this tournament. The return to fitness of captain Kane Williamson is also a significant boost for the team.
New Zealand's standout wicket-takers in this tournament are spinner Mitchell Santner and fast bowler Trent Boult, who have collectively taken 29 wickets. Fast bowler Lockie Ferguson has contributed with 10 wickets. The absence of fiery Matt Henry, who took 11 wickets before leaving the tournament due to injury, is a potential concern.
Despite being finalists in 2019 and 2015, New Zealand has never won the Cricket World Cup. As they aim for a third successive final, their recent bilateral ODI series record against India is not impressive. However, in a major tournament, a single win can correct past shortcomings.

Rohit Sharma has been the standout batsman for India in this tournament, consistently providing explosive starts that have often put the team in a favorable position. However, when considering his suitability for the upcoming game, it's important to note that his current form is the primary factor in his favor. Virat Kohli
Virat Kohli has been in excellent form during the tournament, scoring 594 runs in nine innings and currently ranking as the highest run-scorer. His impressive track record against New Zealand, with an average of 56.59 across 30 innings, and his fondness for batting at the Wankhede Stadium, where he has an average of 59.50, make him a crucial and essential choice for the upcoming game.

Rachin Ravindra
The most significant topic of conversation in this tournament has revolved around Rachin Ravindra and his impressive batting performance. With a total of 565 runs in nine innings, he currently holds the title of the third-highest run-scorer in the World Cup 2023. Considering his incredible form, Ravindra is undoubtedly a key player in the next match against the Kiwis.
Trent Boult
The Kiwi speedster hasn't been in top form during the tournament, making him appear as a somewhat risky choice. However, if New Zealand ends up bowling second, Trent Boult could become a crucial player for them. He grabbed 13 wickets from 9 games.
Final Words
India is unbeaten in this ICC Men's ODI World Cup 2023. Although New Zealand has a better record in the knockout stage, India has the home ground advantage. So, India is likely to win this IND vs NZ match.

WHO SEARO Director election: Momen thanks India, other countries for supporting Saima Wazed
Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen on Wednesday (November 01, 2023) thanked the countries, especially neighbouring India, noting that they actively supported Bangladesh’s campaign for Saima Wazed’s win in the WHO South East Asia Regional Director election.
“I must thank all the countries, especially India. They helped in our campaign. They actively supported our candidature,” he told reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Saima Wazed has been nominated, through an election, as the Regional Director (RD) of the South East Asia Regional Organization (SEARO) of the World Health Organization (WHO) for the term 2024-2028.
Bangladesh candidate Saima Wazed wins WHO SEARO Director election
The election took place during the 76th session of the Regional Committee for SEARO, the annual governing body meeting of WHO at the regional level, in New Delhi today (November 01, 2023).
The election was held by secret ballot with the participation of the 10 member states of the SEARO which were eligible for voting.
Saima Wazed bagged eight votes in the bid while the other candidate Dr Shambhu Prasad Acharya, nominated by the Government of Nepal, secured two votes.
“I expected 9 votes. Thank God. It was a big challenge. All of us worked very hard. We maintained a very decent campaign,” the foreign minister said.
Momen, however, expressed displeasure over mudslinging by a certain group against the Bangladesh candidate.
“I found her excellent in technical knowledge and she is also a good organiser,” said the foreign minister.
Nomination for WHO Regional Director: Top health experts of the country laud Saima Wazed’s leadership abilities
This election with overwhelming support reflects the recognition of Saima’s passion and relentless work in public health and demonstrates the confidence and trust of the region in her leadership skills, the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi said.
“Thank you to WHO SEARO Member States for choosing me to be their next Regional Director,” Saima Wazed said in reaction.
She paid tribute to the outgoing Regional Director Dr. Poonam Khetrapal Singh, for her decade of service to the public health of the region.
“A special tribute as well for my fellow nominee in this race, Dr. Acharya. In his long and distinguished career, he has been an invaluable asset to WHO - and I hope our region will continue to benefit from his knowledge and experience,” she wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
“I look forward to building a healthier South-East Asia,” she added.
The nomination will be submitted for appointment by the 154th session of the WHO Executive Board, which takes place from January 22 to 27, 2024 in Geneva, Switzerland.
The newly appointed regional director will take office on February 1, 2024 for a five-year term and be eligible for reappointment once.
WHO regional director election: Momen conveys Bangladesh’s gratitude to Thailand for support to Saima Wazed
Earlier, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in coordination with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, conducted an effective campaign in favour of the Bangladesh candidature since the very beginning of the election process.
The SEARO is one of the six regions of WHO with its headquarters in New Delhi, India.
It comprises 11 countries, namely, Bangladesh, Bhutan, DPR Korea, India, Indonesia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Timor Leste.
The SEARO is headed by the RD who is nominated by the members of the SEARO countries.

Preview of ENG vs. IND ODI in ICC World Cup 2023
The highly anticipated clash between India and England in the ICC World Cup 2023 is set to start at 2:30 pm Bangladesh time on October 29, 2023. This thrilling ENG vs. India encounter will take place at the iconic Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.
IND vs. ENG ODI in the 2023 ICC World Cup: Match Preview
England’s Performance In the Ongoing Men’s ODI World Cup
England had a tough time in the Cricket World Cup, losing their fourth game out of five. They suffered an eight-wicket defeat against Sri Lanka in Bangalore. As a result, Jos Buttler’s team is now in a tough spot, and it is unlikely they’ll make it to the semi-finals.
Right now, England is in the 9th position with a 1-4 record. In their recent game on Thursday night, they had a tough time against Sri Lanka. When they batted first, they only managed to score 156 runs before losing all their wickets in just 33.2 overs. The only noteworthy performance came from Ben Stokes, who scored 43 runs off 73 balls. Further, England’s performance with the ball was disappointing as they managed to take only two wickets, and Sri Lanka easily reached the target in 25.4 overs. England has only managed to score over 300 runs in one out of their five games played. If we look at the scores from their last three matches, it’s quite concerning: they were bowled out for 215 against Afghanistan, 170 against South Africa, and 156 against Sri Lanka.
Technically, England has not been ruled out of the semi-final race, but their fate now depends on other teams’ results, and they cannot afford to lose another game if they want to have a shot at the semi-finals.
It is unclear which direction the England team will take for the upcoming match. They have been trying out various lineups during the tournament but have not found the winning combination yet. Players like Sam Curran, Harry Brook, and Gus Atkinson could be considered for the team, especially after the loss to Sri Lanka on Thursday.

Performance of India In the 2023 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup
While England is struggling, India is performing exceptionally well in the ICC Cricket World Cup. They have won all five of their opening games, making them a perfect 5-0 and putting them in a strong position for a spot in the semi-finals. Their team is well-equipped with depth and flexibility, enabling them to adjust to various weather conditions and pitch conditions on any match day.
In the last game, Virat Kohli maintained his excellent form by scoring 95 runs from 104 balls, playing a leading role with the bat. Rohit Sharma contributed with 46 runs at the top of the order. Since all-rounder Hardik Pandya is still sidelined due to injury, it is probable that India will stick with the same team for their upcoming match against England, which means they will rely on just five bowlers.
India vs England Head-to-Head ODI
India has won 57 out of the 106 games they have played against England. On the other hand, England has won 44 times.
In their most recent five one-day matches, India has won three, and they also won the last series with a score of 2-1 when they played against a team led by Jos Buttler in July 2022.

Key Indian Players to Watch
Virat Kohli
Kohli has been exceptional in this tournament, consistently scoring runs in all parts of the cricket field. His average in the tournament is an incredible 118. So far, he’s scored a total of 354 runs in 5 innings. This includes a century in the match against Bangladesh and three fifties in games against Australia, Afghanistan, and New Zealand.
Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma’s performance with the bat in this World Cup has been absolutely outstanding. The captain of the Indian team seems determined and unstoppable, scoring a total of 311 runs in five matches at a strike rate of 133.47. He has played 19 ODI matches against England and scored 637 runs, with 137 highest score. So, we might see another incredible performance against England.
Mohammed Shami
In his first match of the World Cup 2023, Mohammed Shami had a remarkable comeback. He took five wickets in the game against New Zealand. Shami was brought into the team to replace Shardul Thakur because of an injury to Pandya. Due to Pandya’s absence, India had to change their playing XI and went in with five specialist bowlers instead of having an all-rounder in the lineup. And Shami’s inclusion worked very well. So, he will surely give his best against the English.

Key English Players to Watch
Dawid Malan
Dawid Malan is doing quite well in the team in ICC World Cup 2023, with an average of 44. He’s been the top scorer for his team, with a total of 220 runs in five innings. He even managed to score a century against Bangladesh. It’s very likely that he’ll continue to open the innings along with Jonny Bairstow.
Ben Stokes
Ben Stokes is taking the captain’s role for England for the rest of the tournament. He only played two matches so far. In his first World Cup match against South Africa, the all-rounder didn’t have a great game. He only scored 5 runs off 8 balls and got out by chipping a catch back to Kagiso Rabada. In the second match against Sri Lanka, he scored 43 runs from 73 balls. However, he has a good record against India, scoring 522 runs from 22 matches. So, he might turn out to be a savior for England.
Reece Topley
With 8 wickets in three matches in this World Cup, Topley is the top wicket-taker for England. So, he might throw his spell against India.
Final Words
Things haven’t been going well with the England team. The expectations for the English side were incredibly high before the tournament began, but their performance has been quite disappointing. They appeared completely lost, especially after their unexpected loss to Afghanistan. India has a good opportunity to win this IND vs. ENG match, which would mark their sixth consecutive victory in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023.

"Under the Fellowship for International Research Scholars in Technology (FIRST) Scheme, we are providing foreign students with the opportunity to pursue PhD with full financial support," he said, adding that it takes a minimum of 8 out of 10 CGPA to apply for students interested in studying at IIT Hyderabad.
As part of the fellowship, a student will get Rs60,000 per month and Rs1 lakh per year as research assistance. The fellowship will last for four years, said Prof. Murty.
Anyone with a master's degree with good results in any subject related to engineering or technology can apply for this fellowship, according to the IIT Hyderabad director.
“We are already in communication with Dhaka University on how the two institutions can work together,” said Murty.
He called upon students from all universities to apply for IIT-Hyderabad.
“Scholarships are being given on the basis of merit,” said Murty.
The IIT-Hyderabad director said that students of the institutions from around the world are getting the opportunity to study here through the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between IIT Hyderabad and universities of different countries.

“If any university in Bangladesh is interested in such facilities, we will help them in that regard. If necessary, we will increase more facilities for Bangladeshis,” he said.
IIT Hyderabad has a joint doctoral degree programme with Swinburne University and Deakin University in Australia.
Due to various facilities, the number of PhD students in the institution is increasing.
In 2020, 230 people came to the institute to pursue PhDs, which rose to 370 the following year, according to Murty.
Professor Tarun Kanti Panda, Dean of International Relations Department of the institute, said, "We want to see more students from Bangladesh here. IIT Hyderabad will work with Bangladesh.”
In response to another question, Professor Tarun said, "We do not have institutional contact with any university or institute in Bangladesh. If any institute from Bangladesh contacts us, we can definitely think about increasing cooperation.”
Professor Tarun Kanti said IIT-Hyderabad can provide education to at least 25,000 to 30,000 students.
IIT Hyderabad offers ample opportunities for research along with higher education.
“Students here set up about 100 start-ups every year. Waris Ali, a student from Afghanistan, has developed a new technology this year. His invention enables real-time monitoring of a patient's pulse rate during surgical procedures, enhancing the precision of medical interventions,” he said, adding that further development of technology is currently underway.

The reason for the all-rounder's departure to Dhaka, leaving the team in India and the decision to practice in Dhaka, remains unclear. This unusual move raises questions about the practice facilities provided for the national team.
The Bangladesh team boasts one of the most extensive coaching panels in the World Cup, led by head coach Chandika Hathurusingha. Bangladesh’s next match in the World Cup is on October 28 against the Netherlands in Kolkata. On October 31, Bangladesh will take on Pakistan at the same venue. Shakib is expected to join the team before the Netherlands clash.
Bangladesh's dependence on India, China could increase if western pressure continues: Int'l Crisis Group
Bangladesh's dependence on India and China will increase if the United States and potentially other Western countries go for further pressure and sanctions, such as visa bans on top officials, the International Crisis Group has said.
"It could also cause the government to increase its dependence on India and China, as the US (and potentially other Western countries) will probably respond with sanctions, such as visa bans on top officials," according to the October 2023-March 2024 edition of "On the Horizon" report of the Crisis Group.
The International Crisis Group is an independent organisation working to prevent wars and shape policies aiming for a more peaceful world.
BNP has declared October 28 for a movement to topple the government and the ruling party Awami League says BNP's downfall will start on that day.

So far, a peaceful atmosphere prevails in the country.
A disputed election could trigger fierce anti-government protests, according to the International Crisis Group.
Election-related activities, such as campaigning and voting, could become flashpoints for violent attacks; spillover could also increase from restive states in India’s northeast, it said.

What to watch for in the coming weeks and months as mentioned by the Crisis Group
1. A high-stakes and potentially violent election in January 2024.
2. The ruling Awami League is expected to ignore calls for it to step down and hand power to a caretaker government that would oversee the election.
3. Rival supporters could clash in street battles or attack party offices or candidates.
4. Islamist groups could become more active in opposing the government.
5. Facing the prospect of a disputed poll, the opposition will probably boycott the election and could become radicalised, adopting more violent tactics.
6. Lack of hope, insecurity and poverty threaten to create a vicious cycle in which desperate Rohingyas – particularly young men – could join criminal gangs and armed groups, further fuelling the violence.
