BCL 'swoops on' Chhatra Odhikar's Abrar Fahad remembrance rally at DU
At least 12 people were hurt as leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) "swooped" on a rally brought out by the Bangladesh Chhatra Odhikar Parishad on the Dhaka University (DU) campus Friday in remembrance of Buet student Abrar Fahad.
Abrar, a second-year student of the electrical and electronic engineering department of Buet (Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology) died on October 7, 2019, after he was mercilessly beaten by the university's Chhatra League men over his Facebook post criticising the government's deals with India.
Today, the Chhatra League men attacked the protest rally at Anti-Terrorism Raju Memorial Sculpture organised to observe Abrar's third death anniversary.
As the protest programme began, Chhatra League activists launched attacks from the university's Teacher-Student Centre, vandalised the chairs and public announcement system, tore off the posters and burned them. They also chased Chhatra Adhikar Parishad men towards Shahbagh, brandishing chairs and sticks.

BCL Vice-President Mohin Uddin, Joint General Secretary Mahbub Khan, Organising Secretary Nazim Uddin, Private University Affairs Secretary Al Amin Rahman; deputy office affairs secretaries Shimul Khan, Abdur Rahim; Jahurul Haque Hall unit President Kamal Uddin Rana, General Secretary Rubel Hossain, and other leaders and activists of the ruling party's student wing carried out the attack, reports our DU correspondent.
The clash left over a dozen injured from Chhatra Odhikar and Chhatra League and they were rushed to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) where another brawl broke out.
Zahid Ahsan, library secretary of the DU Chhatra Odhikar Parishad, and Chhatra League Central Committee Organising Secretary Nazim Uddin were among the injured.
Bin Yamin Mollah, president of Chhatra Odhikar Parishad, told UNB that the BCL men injured 12 of their activists during a "peaceful programme," without any provocation. "As I went to see them at Dhaka Medical college hospital, BCL again attacked us."
BCL Joint General Secretary Mahbub Khan said Chhatra Odhikar Parishad leaders and activists were holding the programme with outsiders and fundamentalists on the DU campus. "When we asked them whether they were university students, they attacked us. Later, the university's students stopped them."
DU student Shaon gets recognition as ‘Youngest Traveler of Bangladesh’
Rifat Jahan Shaon, a third-year student of Theatre and Performance Studies Department of Dhaka University, has been officially recognized as the Youngest Traveler of Bangladesh.
He was recognized in a formal ceremony organized by Dhaka University Tourist Society (DUTS) on the occasion of ‘World Tourism Day’ at the Student-Teacher Center (TSC) of the university on Tuesday afternoon.

DU students won't need to go to Registrar Building for academic services: VC Akhtaruzzaman
Dhaka University (DU) students will not have to go to the Registrar Building for academic services anymore, Vice-Chancellor (VC) Md Akhtaruzzaman said Wednesday.
The assurance came amid allegations that the Registrar Building officials and staff often harass students as they go to the administrative building for academic services.
At 2pm today, Akhtaruzzaman went to see Hasnat Abdullah, a masters student of the English department, who had begun fasting unto death Tuesday in front of the university's administrative building to press home an eight-point demand.
Hasnat's demands included setting up of a complaint cell for ensuring accountability of administrative officials and stopping harassment of students; digitalisation of all administrative activities as soon as possible and setting up of closed circuit TV cameras in all offices.
The masters student ended his hunger today after being assured by the VC that his demands would be met. Later, Hasnat was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as he fell sick during the hunger strike.

"Students will no longer have to waste their time waiting at the Register Building for hours. From now on, they will get all their academic services from their respective dormitories and departments," Akhtaruzzaman said.
"If anyone is harassed there, action will be taken through the hall provost and chairman of the student's department."
DU blue panel bags victory in syndicate poll
Blue panel, the Awami League-backed teachers' panel of Dhaka University, has bagged victory in the syndicate election.
The poll was arranged at the university's Nawab Ali Chowdhury senate building from 10 O'clock on Tuesday morning.
Elected teacher representatives of Dhaka University Syndicate are Dr. Mohammad Masudur Rahman as the hall provost, Professor Dr. Nijamul Hoque Bhuiyan as the representative of Professors, Abu Hossen Mohammad Ahsan of Public Administration Department as associate professor, Mohammad Sharif Ul Islam as assistant professor, Dr. Ismat Rahman of Computer Science and Technology Department as the associate professor of academic council, ASM Manjur Al Hossain of Medicine Technology Department as the representative of lecturer and Dr. Mohammad Shafikul Islam of Applied mathematics Department become the elected member of Finance committee of Syndicate.

The poll result was published around 3 pm and all the elected members from Awami League-supported Blue panel.
Treasurer of University of Dhaka Prof. Momtaz Uddin was in-charge of the election commissioner and he declared the result of the polling around 4.30 pm today.
This committee will be valid for holding office for next two years but this committee can continue in the office till their successors are elected or being nominated and enter the office, Dhaka University Ordinance 1972 says.

Protest rally at DU against BCL attack, BSF border killing
Bangladesh Chhatra Federation formed a human chain and brought out a torch procession at Dhaka University campus Monday demanding justice for recent border killings by Indian Border Security Force (BSF).
The left leaning student body also demanded justice for an attack on a protest rally against border killing at Bera Upazila of Pabna by Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists.
Around 5:20 pm the activists of Chhatra Federation from central panel, Dhaka University unit, formed a human chain in front of the antiterrorism Raju monument of University of Dhaka

Mosiur Rahman Khan Richard, president of Bangladesh Chhatra Federation, said, "BCL activists of Pabna attacked our activists as they were protesting the killing of school boy Minarul Islam by BSF at Bangladesh-India border in Dinajpur."
He said it is a matter of regret that this incident occurred when Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was in India to negotiate bilateral issues and solutions.
“However no negotiations about the murders by BSF have been made during the visit which has become a regular phenomenon lately," he added.

"Our government is too weak to condemn the extra-judicial killing of BSF across the Bangladesh-India border but it mourns the death of Elizabeth II,” said the Chhatra Federation president.
Later, a torch procession from the foot of the Raju monument marched toward Shahbagh intersection.
Earlier on September 8, Minarul Islam ,17, a student of Khanpur High School of class six was shot to death by the BSF while Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was still in India on a four-day visit at the invitation of her Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi.
Nobel laureate economist Tirole to address 53rd DU convocation November 19
Jean Tirole, a French economist who was awarded the 2014 Nobel Prize for Economics, will address the 53rd convocation of the University of Dhaka (DU) scheduled to be held on November 19 this year.
Tirole, whose work had a significant impact across a wide range of fields within economics, including microeconomics, game theory, and industrial organisation will join the event as the convocation speaker, DU said Wednesday.

The date for the DU convocation was set at an online meeting today. DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Md Akhtaruzzaman presided over it.
Prime accused among 4 held over mugging of DU student after abduction
Detectives in a drive arrested four people including the prime accused in a case over snatching belongings of a 3rd year student of Dhaka University after abduction, said police on Sunday.
The accused were prime accused Shakil Ahmed Rubel, 28, Akash Sheikh, 22, Delwar Hossain, 55 and Habibur Rahman.
Police also seized two pistols, two bullets, one magazine, one wireless set, two motorbikes with police sticker and six mobile phone sets from their possession.
Tipped off, a team of DB police conducted simultaneous drives in different parts of the city and arrested them, said Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Harun-or-Rashid.

“Shakil was involved in 1500 mugging incidents. He used to tease girls and the female students of universities and colleges in the guise of police personnel,” said Additional Commissioner Harun.
Shakil used to carry out criminal activities by living in a rented hotel room.
Earlier on August 25, Shakil, in the guise of police, intercepted a rickshaw carrying a DU female student in the city’s Kalyanpur area and forced the girl to go with him saying that she was carrying something illegal in her bag.
He then took her to Diabari and snatched away gold ornaments after keeping her hostage at knife point.

Students lock hall canteen at DU over rotten food
Students of Dhaka University's Kabi Jasimuddin Hall have locked up the hall’s canteen for serving low quality and rotten food.
The students locked the canteen after seeing the spoiled rice with insects on Friday noon. More rotten food was retrieved from the canteen kitchen and later brought to the hall garden.
During the drive, canteen manager Mubarak Hossain locked in an argument with the students. At one point, the students became enraged and dared to beat him, but seniors stopped them from hurting the manager.
Students said that all the food in the canteen was rotten and rice powder was being fed in the name of rice. Besides, all kinds of fish, meat and curries were also impossible to eat.
The students have threatened to remove the manager and later locked the canteen until it was cleaned and standardized.
At the canteen this UNB reporter found that there were insects in rice, feathers in cooked chicken and most of the food inside the fridge was spoiled.

In the face of the students' interrogation, canteen manager Mubarak claimed that the shopkeeper had given the bag of rotten rice by mistake.
About the packet of rotten meat inside the fridge, he said, "It was left by a student."
Jasim Uddin Hall Provost Prof Muhammad Abdur Rashid, House Tutor Md Zahirul Islam, Hall unit of Chhatra League President Waliul Sumon and General Secretary Lutfur Rahman along with more students came to the canteen during the heightened period and calmed down the situation.
After inspecting the food in the canteen, the Hall Provost asked the canteen manager to eat the cooked chicken with feathers.
"These foods are a threat to the health of the students. The culprit must be brought to justice. The canteen will remain closed till further notice," Prof Rashid said.
Mohiuddin Roni alleges attack on him at Kamalapur station
Dhaka University student Mohiuddin Roni and his fellow protesters on Thursday alleged that they had been attacked at Kamalapur railway station by some law enforcement people.
"When we tried to enter Kamalapur Railway station to stage our regular protest, they stopped and attacked us. It is a clear violation of civil rights," Rony told UNB.
A female protester named Munni said, "When we were entering Kamalapur Railway station for protest, some Railway police and local law enforcement personnel prevented us. They hurt us by pushing us with their batons."
The incident took place around 5 pm on Thursday.
Another eye witness has given the same account of the incident.
Then the protesters came to Shahbag around 7 pm and squatted there demanding the implementation of his six-point demand along with the proper justice for such harassment.
Earlier on July 19, Roni submitted a memorandum to the director general of Bangladesh Railway to press for his six-point demand and gave an ultimatum of 48 hours.
Before this, from July 8, he has been demanding the implementation of his six-point denane after being deceived by SOHOZ.com while buying a train ticket to go home during the vacation of Eid-Ul-Azha.
However, when he alleged this deception to Vokta Odhikar Songrokkhon Parishad, they investigated it and fined SOHOZ.com an amount of TK. Two lakh of which Roni was given Tk50000 on July 20.
14.30% student pass DU ‘Ga’ unit entry test
The results of the ‘Ga’ unit admission test under faculty of Business Studies of Dhaka University for session 2021-2022 have been published with a pass rate of 14.30%.
DU vice Chancellor prof. Mohammad Akhtaruzzaman unveiled the results on the university website at Abdul Motin Chowdhury virtual classroom around 12.30 pm.
A tolal of 4,289 out of 29,997 students passed the entry test.
Only top 1100 students will be allowed to fill up the subject choice forms against a total of 930 seats.

By providing information, candidates can check their results at admission.eis.du.ac.bd or use the short message service (SMS) available on any mobile operator, said a press release.
For SMS notification of the result, candidates have to type DU KHA [exam roll] in message(sms) option and send it to 16321.
Students have to fill the 'Subject Choice Form' online and submit it between 3 pm of July 6 to 5pm of July 21
Students, who are not happy with their results, can apply for rechecking the exam script from July 6 at Business Faculty dean office of Dhaka University.
Sarwar Hossen Khan topped the merit list scoring 116.75 out of 120 while Anima Parvez Elma stood 2nd scoring 110 out of 120 and Mohammad Abdullah Khan got 3rd position scoring 107.75.
"The admission test result of 'Ka' unit under Science faculty for 2021-22 academic session will be published on July 4.
