T20 World Cup: New Zealand beat Ireland by 35 runs
New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson posted a half century and his spinners checked Ireland’s scoring rate in a 35-run win Friday that gave the Black Caps a strong chance of securing a semifinal spot at the Twenty20 World Cup.
Williamson scored 61 off 35 balls as New Zealand reached 185-6 after being sent in to bat, his innings negating Ireland pace bowlers Josh Little’s hat trick — only the second of this tournament.

Ireland was restricted to 150-9 in reply, with Lockie Ferguson taking 3-22 for New Zealand while spinners Mitchell Santner (2-26) and Ish Sodhi (2-31) took key wickets at the top of the order.
New Zealand has seven points from five games and its high net run-rate of 2.113 makes it favorite to finish atop Group 1 ahead of England and Australia.
The Australians were without skipper Aaron Finch for their last Super 12 game against Afghanistan later Friday, when they needed to win by a big margin to improve their chances of qualification. England will play Sri Lanka in Sydney on Saturday.
Afghanistan won the toss and opted to field. Matthew Wade was leading Australia in the absence of Finch, who was ruled out with a hamstring injury.
New Zealand started against Ireland knowing it needed a win to keep its chances of advancing alive.
Fabian Allen made a rapid star, scoring 32 off 18 balls including five boundaries and a six.
Allen put on 52 off 35 balls in an opening stand with Devon Conway (28), who later added another 44 runs with Williamson for the second wicket.
Williamson accelerated in the second half of the innings, hitting five fours and three sixes overall. He reached his half-century off 32 balls.

“I was just trying to build partnerships. The openers set up the total. The spinners bowled brilliantly to help us win the game,” Williamson said.
Little changed the complexion of New Zealand’s innings in the 19th over, when he dismissed Williamson, Jimmy Neesham and Santner in succession to claim a hat-trick.
It was only the second hat-trick in this tournament after Karthik Meiyappan’s feat against Sri Lanka in the preliminary round.
Daryl Mitchell scored 31 not out off 21 balls to propel his side to a par-plus score.
In reply, Ireland raced to 68-1 in 8.1 overs. Andrew Balbirnie (30) and Paul Stirling (37) made quick starts, hitting three fours and four sixes between them.
New Zealand’s spin attack brought it back into the game, with Sodhi bowling Stirling to really turn the game in the 10th over and then dismissing No. 3 Lorcan Tucker (13) in the 15th.
Santner took the first wicket when he bowled Balbirnie and having Harry Tector (2) caught at point as Ireland was reduced to 94-4 in 13.1 overs.
George Dockrell scored 23 off 15. None of the last five Irish batters reached double digits.

“I can do this!”: Mosaddek to Shakib before last ball against Zimbabwe
Despite a last-minute scare, Bangladesh beat Zimbabwe by three runs today at the ongoing T20 World Cup in Brisbane. A no-ball came to the fore at the last moment, which could have cost the Tigers the match.
But Mosaddek Hossain, who bowled the last over, held his nerve well, and delivered a dot that earned Bangladesh a win — second at the T20 World Cup 2022.
After the match, Shakib Al Hasan, the Bangladesh captain, said that Mosaddek told him he is “strong enough” to manage a dot in the last ball.
The no-ball was not Mosaddek’s fault at all. It was Nurul Hasan, the wicketkeeper, who grabbed the last ball of the 20th over from in front of the stump – a clear violation of the cricketing rule.
A wicketkeeper is bound to grab the ball from behind the stump. If a keeper violates this rule, the delivery is a no-ball, and this is exactly what happened in today’s match in Brisbane.
Zimbabwe needed 16 runs off the last over to seal the game. Mosaddek conceded one run off the first ball and scalped the wicket of Brad Evans on the second ball. The third and fourth deliveries were hit for four and six respectively by Richard Ngarava. Zimbabwe got close to sealing the match.
But off the fifth ball, Nurul did a wonderful job when Ngarava stepped up aiming a big shot and missed the ball. Nurul grabbed the ball and shattered his stumps in the blink of an eye.

At this point, Shakib warned Nurul about grabbing the ball from in front of the stumps. The TV replays showed that he grabbed the ball nearly from in front of the stumps. Shakib said he warned Nurul so that he doesn't repeat it on the next delivery.
Nurul, however, forgot the pointer in the last ball (which was actually the sixth delivery) and grabbed the ball from in front of the stumps when Blessing Muzarabani missed it. Bangladesh broke into celebration before the umpires declared the sixth delivery a no-ball!
At that point, Zimbabwe’s target came down to four runs off a single delivery. Bangladesh were on the verge of an unexpected defeat. A bad delivery from Mosaddek or a good shot from Muzarabani could have written the story of the match in a different way.
Mosaddek held his nerve well, very well. He delivered a fullish delivery. Nurul, this time, picked it from behind the stumps and that’s it!
Bangladesh won the match by three runs in the midst of chaos and drama.
It was the first time when Bangladesh took on their familiar foe Zimbabwe in a World Cup encounter and they managed to win.
Ahead of all-important matches against subcontinental opponents Pakistan and India, this will surely boost the confidence of Shakib and his troops.
T20 World Cup 2022: Bangladesh beat Zimbabwe despite drama in last over

In the last over, Zimbabwe needed 16 to seal the match. Mosaddek Hossain, who had conceded 27 runs in his first three overs, came to bowl the last over. He scalped two wickets, conceding 12 runs.

The match ended in a dramatic fashion when Mosaddek delivered a no-ball after the fifth delivery that sent Richard Ngarava back. Blessing Muzarabani swung the bat but missed. Nurul Hasan collected the ball and stumped him. But Nurul collected the ball before the stumps and the umpire called it a no-ball.
Right after Nurul stumped Muzarabani, Bangladesh started a celebration. But the umpire called for them to deliver another ball. This time, Muzarabani failed to connect the ball and Bangladesh won by three runs. Zimbabwe ended up at 147 for eight in 20 overs.
Earlier, in the 19th over, Shakib Al Hasan conceded seven runs off the first three balls, and in the fourth ball, he trapped Williams in a run-out for 64 off 42 balls. It was a great effort from the Bangladesh captain.

Ahead of Sunday’s clash, Sridharan Sriram, the technical consultant for the Tigers, said Bangladesh need a second win in the T20 World Cup now as that will help them gain confidence in the matches against Pakistan and India.
In the first match, Bangladesh won, riding on the wonderful pace-bowling of Taskin Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud. But in the second, Bangladesh suffered in every department of the game and endured a defeat by a margin of 104 runs. That big defeat cast the old cloud over Bangladesh’s capacity in T20Is.
But Sridharan said they are not thinking much about what has already happened.
“Whether you win massively, lose massively, the next day it’s gone. You wake up, train, travel and play. So nothing changes from our side,” he said today, ahead of the Zimbabwe match.

Opening the batting was among the main concerns for Bangladesh ahead of the tournament. But Sridharan said he is happy with what Najmul Hossain Shanto and Soumya Sarkar are doing so far. Sriram also stated that he is no longer concerned about the opening stand.
“We are building a side and the confidence of the boys, they know where they stand in world cricket and where they want to go,” he said. “We already have the base of a good team. If we can add a few more skillsets, I think we can build a very good T20 side for the future.”
Bangladesh have three matches left in the Super 12 Round of the T20 World Cup 2022 and they need to make a strong comeback against Zimbabwe on Sunday in order to stay firm in the tournament.
