T20 World Cup: Zimbabwe stun Pakistan by 1 run
Zimbabwe held their nerve for a 1-run victory over Pakistan Thursday in the latest upset at the T20 World Cup.
Third-place Zimbabwe, whose opening group match was abandoned against South Africa, have three points, one more than Bangladesh.
The Green Shirts are in trouble with zero points. It was their second successive defeat after a nerve-wracking loss against arch-rival India.
Pakistan's brittle middle-order batters were restricted at 129-8 in a thrilling match at Perth after Zimbabwe chose to bat first and struggled against pace on a bouncy wicket to make 130-8.
It just proved enough for Zimbabwe, helped by 14 extras.
Unorthodox spinner Sikandar Raza bagged 3-25 and brought Zimbabwe back in the hunt in the 14th over with the wickets of Shadab Khan and Haider Ali off successive deliveries. Raza then dealt a major blow by having top-scorer Shan Masood (44) stumped off a wide ball down the leg side in the next over.

"I'm lost for words, my throat's dry probably because of all the emotions," Raza said. "The way our seamers started at the top as well is just unbelievable and the way we backed it up in the field and the way we kept believing, I don't think there's any words I can share right now."
Mohammad Nawaz, who made 22, brought the target down to 11 off the last over and Mohammad Wasim narrowed it to three off the last three deliveries before Brad Evans had Nawaz caught at long off and then Shaheen Afridi was run out off the final ball with Pakistan falling short of the target.
Earlier, Pakistan's tactics of going with four fast bowlers worked out well with Wasim picking up 4-24 and Shadab bowling a tidy spell of 3-23 in the middle overs.
Zimbabwe got off to a flying start of 42 in five overs before slipping to 95-7, losing four wickets for no runs. Sean Williams top-scored with 31 before Shadab ignited the collapse by clean bowling Williams and Babar Azam grabbed a superb one-handed catch offered by Regis Chakabva over his head in the lone slip.
T20 World Cup: Afghanistan-New Zealand match washed out without a single ball bowled
The Group-1 Super-12 match of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup between last time runners-up New Zealand and upcoming cricketing nation Afghanistan was washed out without a single ball being bowled due to heavy evening showers at Melbourne Cricket ground, Australia on Wednesday.
After the match, both the teams shared one point each and the ongoing World Cup saw the second washed out after the South Africa -Zimbabwe match held in Hobart on Tuesday.
Despite sharing the points in day's ill-fated match, the top slot of New Zealand in Group A was not hampered as they secured three points from two matches after punishing holders Australaia by 89 runs in the first match, featuring a huge net run rate boosting.

But, Afghanistan’s chance of making a semifinal berth suffered a big blow as they remained at bottom in six-team Group 1 with one point from two matches after conceding five wickets defeat against England in the first match..
However, Afghanistan will remain at Melbourne to play their next match against high flying Ireland on Friday while New Zealand will fly for Sydney to play Sri Lanka on Saturday.
T20 World Cup 2022: Shakib puts his faith in pace against South Africa
After Taskin Ahmed registered his career-best figures in T20Is to make the difference in Bangladesh’s first match of the ongoing T20 World Cup.
The less experienced Hasan Mahmud also did well in the same match. Now, ahead of the second match of the event against South Africa, Bangladesh captain, Shakib Al Hasan said he is hoping the pacers will keep shining in the World Cup.
Bangladesh will take on South Africa on Thursday at 9 am (Bangladesh time). The Tigers will be hoping to make it two wins out of two at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground, against opponents who they beat earlier this year in their own backyard in an ODI series for the very first time.
“Taskin became a leader of our team,” Shakib said in the pre-match press conference. “After Mashrafe left the national team, Taskin has improved a lot in the last couple of years. We have a great pace-bowling attack in all three formats of the game. I hope they will continue to deliver the same in the World Cup.”
In the last match in Hobart, Bangladesh had to play under cold conditions, but in Sydney, they are going to get better weather. That might help the Tigers to perform in a better way as well.
In the last match in the same venue, New Zealand beat Australia after scoring a massive total of 200 runs. That indicated that the wicket of Sydney will be friendly for the batters, and winning the toss may play a big role. But Shakib didn't seem interested in the discussion of winning the toss or not.
Read: T20 World Cup 2022: Taskin shines as Bangladesh register first Super 12 win
“Toss is not in our hand,” Shakib replied to a question. “Since we are looking forward to winning this match, we have to play well no matter what we do first— be it bowling or batting.”
South Africa had to share points in their first match which ended with no result due to bad weather. Now, if they lose against Bangladesh, their chance to qualify for the next phase of the event will virtually be shrunk. Shakib says that this situation will inspire South Africa to play all-attack cricket.
Bangladesh captain believes the spinner will get the extra friendly environment at the surface of Sydney. It is clear from the captain's words that Bangladesh may go with an extra spinner in the next match. In that case, Yasir Ali might have to pave the way for Mehidy Hasan Miraz.
Before this match, Bangladesh took on South Africa in seven T20Is and failed to win any of those matches. But this time, Bangladesh has a good chance, especially, after the win in the first match against the Netherlands, Tigers are pumped-up and confident to keep the winning-streak intact.

T20 World Cup 2022: Taskin shines as Bangladesh register first Super 12 win
Bangladesh registered their first win in the Super 12 stage of the T20 World Cup 2022, beating the Netherlands by nine runs on Monday in Hobert.
Taskin Ahmed, the right-arm pacer, bagged four wickets for the Tigers to lead the way to the victory. Another right-arm pacer, Hasan Mahmud, also did well, taking two important wickets in this match. Taskin ended up taking four for 25—his best in T20Is now. His previous best was two for 12 against Papua New Guinea.
Read:T20 World Cup: Bangladesh strike early, Netherlands lose 4 quick wickets
Winning the toss, the Netherlands opted to bowl first. Bangladesh posted 144 for eight. In reply, the Netherlands lost two wickets in the very first two balls of their innings.
Taskin’s pace looked too good for the Netherlands batters. The hard-working pacer provided Bangladesh with a dream start. In the first ball, Yasir Ali took a tough catch at the first slip, and in the second ball, wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan took a regulation catch to dismiss the second wicket.
The Netherlands lost two more wickets, trapped by run out in the fourth over when Shakib Al Hasan came to bowl and conceded a six off his first ball. Max ODowd hit him for a six off the first ball, but on the next ball, Max was trapped in run-out. In the same over, Bangladesh sent back Netherlands captain Tom Cooper as well, who suffered a diamond duck—didn't face any balls before getting run out.
Najmul Hossain Shanto saved a boundary in great fashion and threw the ball to the wicketkeeper Nurul, who broke the stumps in a flash. And thus, Tom lost his wicket for a duck.
Colin Ackermann came up with a heroic knock for the Netherlands, but it was not enough for them as he hardly got any support from his teammates who came a cropper today. Scott Edwards and Ackermann had a 44-run stand for the fifth wicket, but that was not enough for them.
In the last over, the Netherlands needed 24 runs. Soumya Sarkar defended it, conceding 14 runs with a six and a wicket off the last ball of the match. In the 19th over, Mustafizur Rahman conceded only eight runs and made the task tough for the Netherlands.
Read:T20 World Cup: Bangladesh set 145 victory target for Netherlands
The Netherlands innings eventually ended up at 135 in 20 overs, and Bangladesh sealed the match by 9 runs. They came close, but they needed to display more potent batting to win the match against a quality bowling attack.
Earlier, Bangladesh got a good start as the openers, Shanto and Soumya, made a good start, posting 43 in the opening stand. But the middle order failed to deliver well. Afif Hossain was the best batter for Bangladesh, scoring 38 runs. Shanto posted the second highest score of 25 runs.
At the lower order, Mosaddek Hossain scored 20 off 12 balls and helped Bangladesh post a fighting total of 144 for eight. For the Netherlands, Paul van Meekeren and Bas de Leede took two wickets each.
After registering their first Super 12 Round win against the Netherlands, the Bangladesh team will be full of confidence to play their second T20 World Cup 2022 match against South Africa on October 27 in Sydney.

T20 World Cup: Bangladesh set 145 victory target for Netherlands
Despite having a good start, Bangladesh only managed to give the Netherlands a 145-run target in their first match of the T20 World Cup 2022 against the Netherlands in Hobert.
Afif Hossain posted the highest score, 38 runs off 27 balls, with two fours and two sixes. But he was dismissed when he needed to press the accelerator. Najmul Hossain Shanto scored 25, Soumya Sarkar posted 14, and Mosaddek Hossain scored 20 for the Tigers.
Bangladesh lost five wickets while going from 43 to 76. That was the best part of the match so far for the Netherlands, who were quite impressive in their bowling. They took wickets when they needed them most, and thus, Bangladesh failed to have a challenging total.
Soumya and Shanto managed a good start, posting 43 runs in their opening partnership. But they departed in a span of seven balls. Right after the openers departed, Bangladesh lost two more quick wickets as Liton Das and Shakib Al Hasan fell for nine and seven respectively.
After the 9.3 overs, the rain came in and the players left the field. The match resumed after the conditions improved.

In the first five overs, Bangladesh posted 43 for none. But on the first ball of the sixth over bowled by Paul van Meekeren, Bangladesh lost Soumya for 14 off 13 balls. On the first ball of the seventh over, Bangladesh lost Najmul Hossain Shanto as well, who was playing well.
Shanto made 25 off 20 balls with four fours. Shanto looked to sweep towards the short leg boundary against the spin, but he could not make it properly. Van Beek took an easy catch at midwicket.
Liton looked shaky from the start of his innings. He played a few loose shots before falling prey to another loose shot. It was a short ball from Van Been. Liton tried to clear through the off region but ended up with a loose shot.
Shakib fell prey to Shariz Ahmed. The left-handed batter tried to play a big shot, but De Leede took an outstanding catch at deep midwicket. Mosaddek Hossain smashed 20 off just 12 balls, which helped Bangladesh to get a total. That might be good one of the Tigers can bowl well.
For the Netehrands, who won the toss and opted to bowl first, Paul van Meekeren and Bas de Leede took two wickets each.
Bangladesh have never played a T20 match in Australia before this one. But will they be able to defend a 145-run target they set for the Netherlands? The Dutch side will surely pose a strong challenge to continue their good run in the T20 World Cup 2022 that started well in the first round.

Earlier, the Netherlands won the toss and opted to bowl first in an overcast condition at the venue. Bangladesh have never played a T20 match in Australia before this one. Bangladesh will look to have their first win today in the T20 World Cup but the fall of Liton and Shakib has put them under pressure at the moment. The Netherlands will surely pose a strong challenge to continue their good run that started well in the first round.

T20 World Cup: Rain poses threat as Bangladesh to take on Netherlands tomorrow
As Bangladesh are all set to take on the Netherlands to start their T20 World Cup 2022 campaign, a forecast of heavy rain poses a significant threat to the fate of the match.
According to media reports coming from Hobert, neither Bangladesh nor Netherlands were able to utilize their respective practice sessions due to heavy rain, and the same could happen to the match.
Bangladesh came to this year’s T20 World Cup with their fans not hoping for something memorable. Over the last couple of years, Bangladesh played 43 matches and won only 15 of them. Their most recent wins came against the UAE in a two-match series.
Ahead of the main event, Bangladesh played a warm-up match against Afghanistan and they suffered a similar fate — a defeat without offering any kind of effective resistance.
Just a few weeks before the T20 World Cup, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) appointed Sridharan Sriram as the T20 consultant of Bangladesh. The former Indian cricketer has done quite a few experiments with the team in the Asia Cup and in the Tri-Series in New Zealand.
After much experiment, Sridharan and the team management have done two last-minute changes to the World Cup squad adding Soumya Sarkar and Shoriful Islam, who were actually drafted as standby players, replacing underperforming Sabbir Rahman and Mohammad Saifuddin.

Before Taking the field in the World Cup, the opening pair has been the main point of concern for Bangladesh. According to the hints the team management has provided so far, Soumya Sarkar and Liton Das are most likely to open the innings for the Tigers.
The Tigers might go with three pacers — Taskin Ahmed, Mosatafizur Rahman and either of Hasan Mahmud and Shoriful Islam — and two spinners Shakib Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz.
While the threat of rain is still looming large, Bangladesh Captain Shakib said that Tigers are looking forward to having a great match against the pumped-up Netherlands who have done well in the first round of the World Cup.
“We had a very good preparation,” Shakib said in the pre-match press meet. “The four matches in New Zealand (in the Tri-Series) will help us, especially here in Hobart where the weather is a little similar to Christchurch. So, everyone is ready and excited for the match tomorrow.”
For the Netherlands, Bas de Leede, the right-arm pacer, has done well in the first round taking seven wickets in three matches. He can offer a tough challenge to the bigger teams in the Super 12s.
The match is scheduled to begin at 10am (Bangladesh time) tomorrow. Now, if the weather permits, the match is going to be a good chance for Bangladesh who have been searching for a win in the Super 12s of T20 World Cups for a long time.
T20 World Cup: India seal a nail-biter with Kohli leading the way v Pakistan
With Virat Kohli showing his class once again, India sealed a nail-biter against Pakistan in their T20 World Cup opener on Monday in Melbourne.
In the last five overs, India needed 60 runs to chase down the target of 160 runs. Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah conceded 12 runs in the 16th and 17th overs. But in the 18th over, Virat hit three fours off Shaheen Afridi and the target came down to 31 in the last two overs.
Haris conceded 15 in the 19th over with two consecutive sixes off fifth and sixth deliveries by Kohli.
In the last over, India needed 16 runs with six wickets in hand. Mohammad Nawaz scalped the wicket of Hardik Pandya in the first ball. In the next two, he conceded only three runs, but off the fourth delivery, Virat hit a six. The fifth one was a no-ball that was also smashed for a six by Virat.
Eventually, India sealed the match by four wickets with Virat remaining unbeaten for 82 off 53 balls.
For Pakistan, Haris and Nawaz scalped two wickets each, but their efforts went in vain as Pakistan failed to hold their nerve at the end of the match.
Earlier, Pakistan batted first in this match after losing the toss. Shan Masood and Iftikhar Ahmed hit a fifty each for them.
Apart from them, none of the other Pakistan batters was able to offer some challenges to Indian bowlers.
Babar Azam suffered a duck while playing a straight delivery from Arshdeep Singh who also sent back the other opener Rizwan Ahmed for only four. It was a rare failure from both of Pakistan's openers.
For India, Arshdeep and Hardik Pandya bagged three wickets. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami took one wicket each.
In reply, India lost three wickets inside the powerplay. They lost the fourth wicket in 31 runs. And after that, Virat and Hardik came up with a match-winning partnership of 113 off 78 balls with Hardik scoring 40 off 37 balls.
With this win, India continued to dominate Pakistan in the ICC events.
