T20 World Cup: Bangladesh sign off with a big defeat to Australia
The abysmal World Cup agony of Bangladesh has finally ended with a big eight-wicket defeat to Australia on Thursday in Dubai.
It was the fifth straight defeat for Bangladesh in the Super 12s stage of this year’s T20 World Cup.
After losing the toss and being sent to bat first, Bangladesh tumbled for 73 all out in 15 overs with Adam Zampa taking five wickets for 19— the best bowling figure in the World Cup so far. Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood took two wickets each as well.

While replying to Bangladesh's 73, Australia batted only for 6.2 overs and won the match with 82 balls to spare. There is only one instance when a team won a match with 82 or more balls to spare in a T20 World Cup match.
Before being bowled out to Bangladesh’s best bowler in this World Cup, Taskin Ahmed, Australian captain Aaron Finch scored 40 off 20 balls.
Shoriful Islam was the only other bowler who took a wicket for Bangladesh.

Earlier, Bangladesh lost four wickets for 33 runs in the powerplay. It was just another lean batting display by the Tigers at the powerplay in this World Cup.
The Tigers lost the first wickets when Liton Das suffered a golden duck in the first over of the match ended his World Cup agony.
In the next over, Soumya Sarkar fell for five. He started well hitting a four early, but once again, failed to carry on— the typical Soumya in this World Cup.
Mushfiqur Rahim and Afif Hossain also failed once again scoring 1 and a duck.
After Liton, Mahedi Hasan was the second Bangladeshi batter in this match to suffer a golden duck.
Shamim Hossain was the highest runs taker for Bangladesh scoring 19 off 18 balls with one four and one six.
Bangladesh made one change in their playing XI replacing Nasum Ahmed with Mustafizur Rahman. The left-handed pacer was out of the team in the previous match.
Bangladesh are missing the service of Shakib Al Hasan as the allrounder has been ruled out of the event with a hamstring injury.
Earlier, Bangladesh also lost Mohammad Saifuddin and Nurul Hasan Sohan with injury concerns.
The Bangladesh team management did not call for other options.
Before the clash against Australia, Bangladesh tumbled for under-100 runs against South Africa which was termed as an aberration, but against Australia, the Tigers proved that was not.
While taking the field in this match, Australia had an eye on the Net Run Rate to overpower South Africa who now also have the same amount of points. But the better run rate is putting the Aussies at the upper place than South Africa.
Right before the World Cup, Bangladesh beat Australia and New Zealand in two consecutive T20 series. The Tigers proved in the World Cup that performance was only a gift by their condition in Mirpur which was a minefield for the batters.
Bangladesh team was heavily reliant on the players like Mushfiqur, Mahmudullah Riyad, Liton Das, Soumya Sarkar and Mustafizur Rahman. It came as an utter surprise that all have failed together.
With wound of World Cup failure, the Tigers will have to take on Pakistan at home later this month.

Bangladesh
Bangladesh have nothing to lose in this match, therefore the players won't be under any pressure. Captain Mahmudullah has one last chance to show his leadership potential in a neutral venue. Bangladesh's recent record against Australia will surely restore faith in the players despite the fact that the conditions and surface are both different from Mirpur's sluggish pitch.
Some of Australia's A-list players were also unable to partake in the series. But a full-strength Australian national team will face a wounded Bangladesh side on Thursday. Bangladesh can win the contest if the players are determined to display their true ability. Even if Bangladesh win this match, they will not be able to advance to the semifinals. Bangladesh would be able to finish the tournament on a high note if they win.

The team management may decide to include him in the lineup given Nasum Ahmed's success against Australian batters in the recent bilateral series.
Probable Playing XI
Mohammad Naim, Liton Das (wicket-keeper), Afif Hossain, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah Riyad (captain), Soumya Sarkar, Shamim Hossain, Mahedi Hasan, Nasum Ahmed, Taskin Ahmed, Shoriful Islam
Australia
Australia must win this match to remain in contention for a semifinal place. Australia are in third place with four points, just two points behind second-placed South Africa. Their main goal would be to win this match by a big margin because South Africa and England both have better run rates than Australia. Their net run rates will improve with a huge win. In this context, Australia will come out with a lot of aggression against Bangladesh. Therefore, the Bangladesh team must be even more prepared to face the Aussie side.

Verdict
Bangladesh have only won two matches in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021. Sadly, the two victories came in the qualifying phase against weaker opponents. In that perspective, the Tigers ' performance in this tournament has been a complete failure. They may finish the tournament in a positive way by winning their last match against Australia. Bangladesh's recent home series victory against Australia would boost the players' confidence. However, Australia are more in desperate need of a win than Bangladesh. Therefore, the team Tigers will face another tough challenge in this tournament.

Pakistan beats Namibia, advances to T20 World Cup semifinals
Powerful half-centuries by Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam lifted Pakistan into the T20 World Cup semifinals with a convincing 45-run victory over inexperienced Namibia on Tuesday.
Rizwan smashed an unbeaten 79 off 50 balls and Babar made 70 off 49 deliveries as Pakistan batted first for the first time in the tournament and put on a strong total of 189-2.
Namibia always looked second best after its impressive 10 overs with the ball on the field to end at 144-5 and lose its second match in Group 2.
Pakistan's fourth successive win puts it atop the table with eight points. It could go unbeaten into the semifinals as its last group game is against Scotland, another inexperienced team.
"It was a different plan today, wanted that opening partnership to go deep and it worked for us," said Babar, who has been in sublime form and recorded his third half-century in four group games.
In-form Rizwan and Babar were tested by tall leftarm paceman Ruben Trumpelmann early on as Namibia gave away only 59 runs in the first half of Pakistan's innings with Trumpelmann starting by bowling a maiden over to Rizwan.
Rizwan also successfully overturned on review an lbw decision off JJ Smit when he was on just 2 as Namibia conceded just four boundaries in the batting powerplay.
But both batsmen cut lose against the rest of the seamers and the legspin of Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton to raise a 113-run stand. Babar hit seven fours, mostly his trademark cover drives, before he holed out off a knuckle ball from David Wiese (1-30) in the 15th over.
Pakistan's faith in Mohammad Hafeez's struggling batting form finally paid off as the experienced middle-order batsman smashed 32 off just 16 balls. But it was Rizwan's clean hitting that provided Pakistan a perfect finish as he hit Smit for 24 runs in the last over that included four boundaries and a six. Smit finished with forgetful figures of 0-50.
Trumpelmann also couldn't inspire in his return spell and after conceding just two off his first two overs, he eventually ended 0-36.
"Hafeez and Hasan Ali will be important in the next stage and it was important we ticked those boxes," Babar said. "So far, everything has gone according to plan. We're looking forward to the semifinals and play our cricket with the same intensity."
Namibia never looked in the hunt against Pakistan's pace and spin which has helped them beat archrival India, New Zealand and Afghanistan in the earlier group games.
Wiese top-scored with an unbeaten 43 off 30 balls and Craig Williams made 40 to narrow the margin of defeat. Fast bowler Hasan Ali returned to bowling form and finished with 1-22 and Haris Rauf, bowling with pace, bagged 1-25 as Pakistan registered its fourth win without making a change into its playing XI.
"We knew from the start that Pakistan are high quality, they look like title contenders," Namibia skipper Gerhard Erasmus said. "Pakistan were outstanding with their shot selection, and their quality showed through the back end of the innings."
Bangladesh’s shameful batting record in T20I
When they were bowled out for 84 by South Africa in their World Cup game on Tuesday, Bangladesh created a shameful record of being dismissed thrice below 100 runs in a year in the T20 International Cricket on Tuesday.
Bangladesh is the lone Test playing and full member country in the world to have that —twice against New Zealand (once at home and once away) and once against South Africa in their latest match at the World Cup.

In the day’s match, Bangladesh were bundled out cheaply for 84 runs in 18. 2 overs, their 3rd lowest in the T20 World Cup, against South Africa, getting eliminates from the ongoing T20 World Cup with six-wicket defeat at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
The team’s present debacle in the shorter version of cricket as they were bundled out for 76 runs against hosts New Zealand in Auckland on April 1, 2021 and again dismissed for the same score of 76 runs on home soil in Dhaka last September, just before the ongoing T20 World Cup.
Finally, Tigers out of World Cup semi-final race
A six-wicket defeat to South Africa on Tuesday ended Bangladesh’s slim chance to qualify for the semi-finals of the ongoing T20 World Cup.
To grab the slimmest chance to book a berth in the semi-finals, Bangladesh had a must-win situation in their matches against South Africa (played today) and the final game against Australia.
On Tuesday, Bangladesh batted first in this match and posted only 84 runs suffering the worst batting collapse in this World Cup.
In reply, South Africa sealed the match with six wickets in hand in 13.3 overs with the captain Temba Bavuma hitting the highest 31 not out.
Taskin Ahmed was Bangladesh’s best bowler taking two wickets conceding 18 runs off four overs.
Earlier, four Bangladeshi batters— Soumya Sarkar, Mushfiqur Rahim, Afif Hossain and Nasum Ahmed— each suffered a duck and three of them fell for golden ducks.
While going to 35 from 22, Bangladesh lost five wickets— three to Kagiso Rabada inside five balls.

It was the third-lowest total by any team against South Africa in the T20 World Cups.
With this lean display, Bangladesh became the first ICC full member nation to be bowled out under 100 thrice in a calendar year.
ladesh have lost three matches they have played before this one, and they have no real chance to qualify for the semifinals even if they win this match and the next match against Australia.
T20 World Cup: “Determined” Tigers to take on South Africa Tuesday
Ahead of their fourth match in the Super 12s stage of the T20 World Cup, Bangladesh’s head coach Russell Domingo said the players are “determined” to give their best to win the match.
Bangladesh lost three matches on the trot in the Super 12s, and they have no real chance to advance to the next phase of the World Cup. But the Tigers are eager to end the World Cup by winning the next two matches.
“Morale has been pretty low after the two narrow losses against Sri Lanka and West Indies. Our chance is probably over in this World Cup, but we have a lot to play for tomorrow. The guys are determined to put in good performances,” Domingo told a pre-match press conference on Monday.
South Africa traditionally struggle against spin. Domingo hinted that the Tigers will rely on their spin department more to beat South Africa on Tuesday.

“Having worked in South Africa for a long time myself, we know there’s always a question mark in the way they play spin. Hopefully, the conditions will help us tomorrow. There are certain areas we will look to exploit when we play against them. We have had some good discussions this morning,” the Bangladesh coach added.
Bangladesh have lost Mohammad Saifuddin to a back injury. The allrounder will not take part in this World Cup anymore. Now, Shakib Al Hasan has also been ruled out of the World Cup. Domingo said it came as a big blow for the team as Shakib adds experience and calmness to the team.
Because of Shakib’s absence Bangladesh will have to make changes in the playing XI. Shamim Hossain might get a chance on Tuesday.
Nurul Hasan Sohan, the wicketkeeper-batter, might also be unavailable for the next match. He suffered a blow before the England match and was side-lined when the Tigers took on West Indies.
Bangladesh missed at least 10 catches in the World Cup so far. Domingo believes this mistake is happening due to the experience guys who are playing at the bigger stage of the game for the first time.
“If you look at the age group in our side, I think we have come into the World Cup with the youngest average age for the players. Guys like Naim, Afif, Shoriful and Mahedi are young players. In big events like this, some players will make mistakes. As long as they are gaining experience from these mistakes, it will put us in good stead going forward,” Domingo further told the media.
Bangladesh’s early exit, though it’s not official yet, sparked anger among the fans at home. Social media is inundated with the trolls of the Bangladesh team which is also affecting the mentality of the players. Former Bangladesh captain, Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, urged the board to impose an embargo so that the players stay away from social media during big events like World Cup.

Many of the trolls are floating around social media targeting Bangladesh’s head coach Domingo, who said he is not a big fan of social media.
“Fortunately I am not on social media. I don’t read too much of it. Most of my social media used to be when I was involved in fishing. Not so much cricket,” Domingo added.
Tamim to miss T20Is home series vs Pakistan
Bangladesh ODI captain Tamim Iqbal will also miss the T20I home series against Pakistan which is set to take place this month.
Due to injury and lack of match time, Tamim withdrew himself from the ongoing T20 World Cup. He rather took part in the Everest Premier League in Nepal but couldn’t complete the event as he sustained a fresh injury on his thumb.
The left-handed batter recently said he would make a comeback with the Test series against Pakistan.

The star batter is now close to making a comeback to competitive cricket with the ongoing National Cricket League for Chattogram.
“I would start batting from November 7,” Tamim told a media recently. “I’ve talked to the doctors and they advised me to start batting a week later. I’m eyeing to take part in the fifth round of NCL.”
Tamim played his last international match in July this year against Zimbabwe. Against the same opponent, he played his last T20I match back in 2020.
