Abontika’s death: Teacher Din Islam sent to jail after remand
A court here on Tuesday (March 19, 2024) sent Jagannath University teacher Din Islam, who was relieved from assist proctor post of the university,to jail after completion of his one-day remand in a case over the death of Law Department student Fairuz Abontika by suicide.
Judge of Cumilla Chief Judicial Magistrate Court Abu Bakar Siddique passed the order when he was produced before the court after remand.
A Cumilla court on Monday placed Jagannath University’s suspended student Raihan Siddique Amman and teacher Din Islam on a two and one-day remand respectively in the case.

The court also ordered the investigation officer of the case filed to submit a report within seven days.
Abontika, a student of the 2017-18 academic year of the JnU Law Department, hanged herself at her Cumilla residence after accusing her classmate Amman and relieved assistant proctor Din Islam in a Facebook post around 10 pm on Friday.
In the Facebook post before committing suicide, Abantika said that Amman Siddique and Din Islam would be responsible for her suicide.
Hours after death of Abontika by suicide, massive protest broke out and continued till Saturday morning, demanding justice for the student.
In the face of student movement, the university authorities were compelled to relieve the assistant proctor and suspend the student to assuage the movement.

Over 2 million students sitting for SSC, equivalent exams starting today
The Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and equivalent examinations for 2024 started today, with over 2 million students from 29,735 educational institutions expected to participate. The Ministry of Education has announced that the exams will start at 10 am across 3,700 centers nationwide.
To ensure the integrity of the examination process, no mobile phones or electronic devices will be permitted within the exam centers, except for a basic phone set without internet access to be used exclusively by the hall secretary. The question code will be disclosed 25 minutes prior to the start of each exam, streamlining the process for students and staff alike.
DMP forms 'quick response team' to ease movements of SSC examinees
In a notable departure from tradition, Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel has decided not to visit any examination centers this year, aiming to reduce the stress levels among students.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Traffic Department is taking proactive measures to facilitate a smooth commute for examinees by forming a "quick response team." This initiative is designed to address any transportation issues students might face en route to their examination centers.
Md Munibur Rahman, the Additional Commissioner (Traffic) of the DMP, emphasized the importance of students planning their travel to arrive at least 30 minutes before their exams begin. He also offered guidance for navigating traffic safely, advising students to use foot over bridges and zebra crossings where available and to seek assistance from traffic police in case of congestion or other issues.

The Biswa Ijtema, billed as the second largest congregation of Muslims after the Hajj, will be held in two phases- February 2 to 4 and February 9 to 11 - this year.
Ahead of this, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) have jointly issued a traffic and car parking management directive to ease the pressure on the traffic system.
The measures will be in effect for each of the three days in both phases.
A media release, issued from police headquarters on Wednesday morning, sought all-out cooperation to maintain order in traffic, avoid traffic jams and facilitate the movement of pilgrims.
Parking Instructions
Police declared a no-parking zone on the roads and its nearby areas from the Khilkhet-Abdullahpr-Dhaur bridge.

Police fixed some points for parking of vehicles for the Muslim devotees who will attend the Ijtema.

Dhaka and Chittagong Division Parking: Kadam Ali Market under Sector No. 15, Bridge No. 5 and Uludah Field in Sector No. 17.
Sylhet and Khulna Division Parking: Lakepar ground of Uttara Sector-15.
Rajshahi, Rangpur and Mymensingh Division: West side of the lake of bridges 10 and 11, inside Sector No. 16 and Boubazar ground.
Divisional Parking inside GMP areas:
Mymensingh Division Parking: Chandana High School, Chowrasta, Gazipur.
Vehicles coming from North Bengal and Tangail will park at Bhawal Badre Alam College and Pubail University College.
Government Vehicles: Telephone Industry Organization (TESIS) and Tongi Government College Ground.
The drivers and helpers of the parked vehicles must stay with their vehicles. The devotees and the driver will keep each other's mobile numbers, so that they can communicate with each other in any emergency. The driver's mobile number must be visible in front of the vehicle.

Diversion points only for the days of Akheri Munajat (concluding prayers) Feb 4 and Feb 11
Dhaur Bridge, Sector No. 18 Panchabati Crossing, Padma Loop, Sector No. 12 Khalpar, Mohakhali Crossing, Hotel Radisson Blu Crossing, Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway (World Road Nikunj-1 Katchi Gate), Kuratali Flyover Loop-2, Mohakhali Flyover West Side, Mirpur Diabari Bus Stand Crossing, Ashulia Bazar Crossing.
Kamarpara Road from Mannu Gate will be shut from the starting day of Ijtema for both phases.
Traffic movement will remain shut on the two-way road from Bhogra Bypass from Abdullahpur and from Mirer Bazar to Station Road from 10 pm on February 3 to 2 pm on Feb 4 and from 10 pm on February 10 to 2pm on Feb 11.
Vehicles carrying VVIPs/VIPs/Foreign devotees participating in Bishwa Ijtema have been advised to use Tongi Flyover from BNS Tower and get off at Station Road and use Mannu Gate Kamarpara Road.
All inter-district vehicles including buses, covered vans and other heavy vehicles will avoid the Abdullahpur, Dhaur Bridge intersection and move via Mohakhali-Bijaysarani-Gabatli from 4:00 am on Akheri Munajat day.

Transportation services will be provided for foreigners from Padma Loop and Kuratali Loop-2 to the airport under the management of Traffic Uttara Division on the day of Akheri Monajat.
It is also requested to avoid Kawla/Airport exit of Dhaka Elevated Expressway on the day of Akheri Monajat.

In anticipation of the Amar Ekushey Grantha Mela (book fair) 2024, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has announced extensive security measures to tackle potential sabotage acts and militant threats. The security plan, detailed by DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman, aims to ensure a safe environment for the attendees of Bangladesh’s largest book fair, set to open on February 1.
Commissioner Rahman, after inspecting the security protocols, stated, “We have put in place a robust security framework to enable visitors to explore and enjoy the fair without any apprehension.” These remarks were made during his visit to the book fair’s location in Dhaka’s Suhrawardy Udyan on Wednesday.
Books worth Tk47 crore sold in Amar Ekushey Book Fair in 27 days
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is slated to inaugurate the month-long cultural event at 3 pm on February 1. In a first for the fair, attendees can now enter and exit through five designated gates at Suhrawardy Udyan, including a special entrance via the Engineering Institute. Each entry point will be equipped with archways and metal detectors to enhance safety.
The DMP Commissioner outlined the comprehensive security measures, including the establishment of internal and external security perimeters and continuous surveillance by undercover detectives. Additionally, numerous watch towers have been erected to oversee and prevent any unforeseen incidents.
Further bolstering the security, the entire fair area is under continuous CCTV monitoring, connected to a dedicated control room. The DMP has arranged various patrolling units, including foot, street, and cyber patrols, around the fair vicinity. The presence of the dog squad, SWAT team, and bomb disposal unit will provide an immediate response capability.

In addition to these security provisions, the DMP has taken measures to cater to the comfort and well-being of the visitors. These include a lost and found center for missing children, a nursing center for mothers, blood donation facilities, and access to pure drinking water throughout the fair premises.
The security plan was detailed in the presence of senior DMP officials, emphasizing the significance and scale of the protective measures for this cultural cornerstone event.

DMP to start transferring OCs 'soon' in line with EC's directive
Following the directive of the Election Commission, Officers-in-Charge (OCs) of stations under Dhaka Metropolitan Police, who have already completed six months in their respective police station, are going to be transferred soon.
Sabotage plans won’t be successful: DMP
Niyoti Roy, additional deputy police commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Media and Public Relations division, confirmed the development on Sunday.
She also said that as the EC decided to transfer all the OCs in phases, the DMP will send their list of OCs to be moved to the EC for its approval.
Security beefed up at EC, regional election offices: DMP
Earlier on November 30, the Election Commission asked the Home Ministry to transfer OCs of police stations all over the country in phases. There are over 650 police stations in the country - 50 of them under DMP.
The EC asked to prioritise the transfer of those officers who have been discharging duties at their respective police station for more than 6 months first.

BNP seeks DMP permission for Oct 28 rally in Dhaka
BNP on Saturday (October 21, 2023) took the necessary steps for securing permission from Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) to hold its planned grand rally on October 28 in front of their Nayapaltan central office.
The party submitted a letter, signed by its Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, to the DMP office in this regard.

Contacted, Rizvi said they sent a letter to the DMP informing the police authorities about their party’s decision to hold the grand rally on October 28. “In the letter, we mentioned that we’ll hold our programme peacefully.”

Earlier on Wednesday, the party announced the grand rally in the capital on October 28 to herald the 'final phase' of action and programmes in the movement to topple the current regime, thus paving the way for holding the next election under a non-party neutral government.
“We’ll hold a grand rally in Dhaka on October 28 (Saturday). From this grand rally, our grand journey will begin,” BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said while announcing the programme at Nayapaltan.

Stating that their planned grand rally is a partial programme of the final phase of the movement, Fakhrul hinted that the opposition will announce a series of action programmes on October 28. “After the grand rally, Inshallah we won’t stop until the fall of this regime,” he told invigorating opposition followers.
The BNP leader said the grand rally will be arranged as part of the simultaneous movement. “All political parties who are on the simultaneous movement will work to make this programme a success."

No rally in Dhaka without permission, says new DMP chief
Permission must be taken to hold any rally in the capital, newly appointed Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Habibur Rahman, said today (October 02, 2023).
“No matter how big the political party is, no program will be held in the capital without permission,” the new DMP chief said during a ‘meet the press’ event at the Media and Public Relations Centre at DMP headquarters around 11 am.
“If any party tries to hold a procession, meeting or rally without permission and breaks the rules, then any unit of DMP can take legal action against the violators without any fear,” he added.
Additional IGP Habibur Rahman takes charge as 36th DMP Commissioner
The DMP commissioner also said that there is a rally of the opposition scheduled for today. “They have taken permission from us and are arranging a rally following the rules,” he said.
Replying to a question over the law and order situation ahead of the national election, the 36th DMP commissioner said that election is a democratic process of transferring power. DMP’s 34,000 forces will undoubtedly work to make the polling process smooth, he said.
When asked whether the US visa policy will have any effect on the DMP, the commissioner said, “I don't think this will be a problem for the police as a force. It is person-centered.”
