‘How many in Bangladesh police want to go to America?’ DMP Deputy Commissioner asks
Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Deputy Commissioner (Media) Faruk Hossain has said the newly implemented US visa policy will not have any impact on police operations.
“We have more than 2 lakh personnel in Bangladesh Police. My question is: How many of them actually want to go to America? The number is very low. From that perspective, we believe this visa restriction will not have any impact on the police,” Faruk said while talking to reporters at DMP’s media centre in the capital.

Deputy Commissioner Faruk said that police have not yet received any list of individuals targeted by the visa restriction.
“We believe the police force operates within the boundaries of law, adhering to human rights standards. We have done so in the past, and we will continue to do so in the future,” Faruk Hossain said. “Therefore, I have faith that this visa policy will not in any way hinder our operations.”

When asked about US concerns regarding the role of law enforcement agencies during the upcoming election, the DMP deputy commissioner said police will continue to work within the framework of law.
“The role of the police during the upcoming election is to provide security at polling centers. The responsibility that will be placed on us comes from the Election Commission. We will fulfil that responsibility,” the DMP deputy commissioner said. “In this regard, we do not think that the US visa policy will pose any obstacle to our duties.”

Habibur Rahman made new DMP Commissioner
The government of Bangladesh has appointed Additional Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Habibur Rahman as the new commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

A gazette notification was issued in this regard by the Home Ministry's Public Security Division on Wednesday (September 20, 2023).
The order will be effective immediately, the notification said.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq on Monday said that the law and order situation in the capital is quite stable at present and crime is under control.
The law and order situation has improved in the capital because the DMP is working as a team and 'Team DMP' is ready to face any situation in future as well, he said.
US Ambassador holds meeting with DMP Commissioner
The DMP Commissioner came up with the remarks while addressing the monthly crime review meeting for the month of August 2023 at the DMP headquarters on Monday.
The DMP chief also said that following the prevailing laws of the country, all police officers should perform their duties with professionalism to maintain law and order and control crime.
The top officer of the DMP asked the officers to give more importance while executing arrest warrants, investigating theft and dacoity cases, as well as recovering stolen vehicles and drugs.

About the activities of Beat Policing, the DMP Commissioner said that a close relationship between the people and the police will be developed if the activities of Beat Policing are implemented successfully.
The distance between police and people will decrease and for this, people will be able to inform the police about their problems very easily. Crime control will also be much easier by gathering intelligence through beat policing activities, he added.

During the meeting, the DMP Commissioner awarded various levels of policemen of the DMP in recognition of their good work in maintaining law and order and public safety provisions of Dhaka city.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has imposed ban on carrying all kinds of weapons, explosives, other harmful substances and holding rallies around the Jatiya Sangsad and adjacent areas from Saturday midnight ahead of the 24th session of the 11th Parliament.
The 24th session of the 11th Parliament will begin on Sunday.

DMP imposed the restrictions to ensure undisrupted movement during the parliament session, according to a notification signed by DMP Commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq on Saturday.
The roads and areas under restrictions are: From Mohakhali crossing on Mymensingh Road to Banglamotor crossing via Old Airport, from Western corner of Banglamotor Link Road to Hotel Sonargaon Road to SAARC Fountain, from the eastern end of Panthapath to Farmgate via Green Road link road, from Shyamoli crossing to junction of Dhanmondi-16 (old-27) road, from Rokeya Sarani link road to old 9th division crossing to Bijoy Sarani Parjatan crossing, from the east end of Indira road to west end of Manik Mia Avenue, the restricted area of the Jatiya Sangsad and all the roads and lanes in the area.

The restrictions will be in force until the parliament session ends.
Political rallies may be banned in future if those cause public suffering: DMP Commissioner
DMP Commissioner Khandaker Golam Faruk on Wednesday (July 26, 2023) urged the political parties to hold their programmes without causing public suffering as they may be forced to ban political rallies in future if those become reasons of people’s woes.
A total of nine political parties including Awami League and BNP have sent letters to Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) seeking permission to hold rallies in the capital on July 27 but few parties will be allowed, said the DMP chief.

“To hold political rallies is a democratic right of the political parties but it is the responsibility of the DMP to ensure the security of the people,” he said while talking to reporters after inspecting the overall security measures on the occasion of Holy Ashura over the Tajia procession.He also urged the political parties to plan their programmes on weekly holidays in future instead of working days considering the public suffering.Besides, carrying of sticks and bags in the rallies will be prohibited, he said.

DMP has no such objection to BNP’s marches in capital on July 18, 19: Anee
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has no such objection to the BNP’s two-day marches in the capital, but they suggested changing the route of Tuesday’s programme, said party’s publicity secretary Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee.
“We discussed with the DMP commissioner the march programmes of our one-point movement. They have no such objection. We sought their cooperation. We hope they will cooperate with us,” he said.
The BNP leader made the remarks on Sunday after a BNP delegation’s meeting with DMP Commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq at his Bailey Road office.

Anee said the DMP authorities have suggested changing the route of Tuesday’s march programme to avoid the road in front of the Planning Ministry. “We’ll take a decision on it in consultation with our senior leaders.”
Besides, he said they also talked about BNP’s scheduled 'youth rally' in front of the party’s Nayapaltan central office on July 22.
Asked whether the DMP gave BNP verbal permission to hold the march programmes, the BNP leader said, “Actually we’ve informed them (DMP). During the table discussion orally, we sought their cooperation and they’ll cooperate with us.”
He said their party has a team of volunteers who will work responsibly at each spot to hold the programmes peacefully.

“We’re going to hold our programmes peacefully as we want to intensify the movement by involving people,” Anee said.
Asked if there are any instructions on using the loudspeakers, he said the police authorities have requested them to conduct the campaign on social media instead of using the loudspeakers.
Replying to another question, the BNP leader said their party will come up with rallies, mass processions, mass hunger strikes and other tougher programmes to force the government to accept their one-point demand.
Earlier on July 12, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir formally announced a ‘one-point’ movement with the goal to remove Awami League from power to hold the upcoming national elections under a neutral government.

As part of the first programme to realise the one-point demand, he also announced a two-day countrywide march programme for July 18 and 19.
On July 18, the BNP leader said the road march will be held in all metropolitan cities and districts across the country to realise one-point demand while the same programme will be observed in Dhaka stretching from Gabtali to Bahadur Shah Park in the old part of Dhaka from 10am to 4pm.
Besides, he said the party will also march on July 19 from Uttara’s Abdullahpur to Jatrabari from 10am to 4pm.
Apart from the BNP, 36 other like-minded political parties also announced the one-point movement and similar programmes to press home their demand to hold the next parliament elections under a non-party government.
Jamaat holds first rally after a decade, demands polls under caretaker govt
Holding its first rally in the capital after a decade, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Saturday (June 10, 2023) demanded holding the next national election under a non-party caretaker government.
The Jamaat leaders also urged the party followers to get ready for taking to the streets to force the government to accept the demand.
The party’s Dhaka South city unit arranged the rally at the Institution of the Engineers, Bangladesh protesting the price hikes in daily essentials and demanding the restoration of the caretaker government and the release of the party’s arrested leaders and activists.

This is the first time since 2013 that Jamaat was able to hold a political programme in the capital as the Dhaka Metropolitan Police gave the party permission for the programme on some conditions.
Huge number of leaders of activists of Jamaat and Chhatra Shibir joined the rally held with the party’s Dhaka south unit president Nurul Islam Bulbul presiding.
A written statement was read out on behalf of Acting Jamaat Ameer Mujibur Rahman.
In the statement, Mujibur Rahman said the country’s people will not accept the next election under the partisan government. “So take steps for holding the election under a caretaker government demonstrating your good sense. There is no alternative to it.”

He also placed a 10-point demand, including holding the election under the caretaker government, the release of party leaders and workers and reopening all party offices.
Speaking at the programme as the chief guest, Jamaat Nayeb-e-Ameer and former MP Dr Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher said the government is talking about a fair and neutral election. “We also want a fair and impartial election. Democracy means fair elections…but the election can’t be allowed to hold this time like 2014 and 2-018 ones.”
The Jamaat leader said the election must be held under the caretaker government this time. “So, come to the discussions to get a solution.”
He also said their party will take to the streets for establishing the caretaker government. “We’ll do whatever needs to be done for realising the demand for the caretaker government.”

Jamaat gets permission to hold rally at Engineers Institute
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islam Dhaka City South will hold a rally at The Institute of Engineers Auditorium Dhaka at 2:00 pm on Saturday (June 10) demanding the release of Amir-e-Jamaat Dr Shafiqur Rahman, establishment of a caretaker government system and controlling price hike.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has given permission to Jamaat-e-Islami to hold a rally at the Institute of Engineers auditorium.

SSC, equivalent exams to begin Sunday
The Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and equivalent examinations for 2023 will begin in Bangladesh on Sunday (April 30, 2023).
According to the Ministry of Education, a total of 20,72,163 candidates are likely to sit for this year’s SSC and equivalent exams.

In order to ensure a fair and peaceful environment no one except the candidates will be allowed within 200 yards of the examination halls during the examinations, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said in a press release on April 27.
Meanwhile, all coaching centres in the country will remain closed from April 26 to May 23 for holding the examinations smoothly, said Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni on Tuesday.
Dipu Moni said that the examinations will be held on a short syllabus this year.

6 arrested for ‘posing as doctors, nurses and robbing homes’, says DMP
Dhaka Metropolitan Police have arrested 6 members of an alleged gang of robbers, including its leader, from different areas of the capital on Wednesday (April 05, 2023).
According to DMP, the arrestees used to pose as doctors and nurses by wearing aprons, masks and ID cards and rob people’s houses across Dhaka.
Faruk Hossain, deputy commissioner of DMP’s media wing, said that six laptops, 10 mobile phones and 2 bags were recovered during the raid.

The arrestees were identified as: Afsana Akter Esha alias Mim (22), Tonmoy Biswas (30), Swapon Sheikh (45), Nurul Islam (27), Kolim Uddin Kalu alias Koliullah (40), and Md. Mokhlesur Rahman (51).
According to DMP, a team from Gulshan Police Station arrested Afsana Akter Esha alias Mim, the alleged ringleader of the gang, from Gulshan area on Wednesday. Later, Gulshan police conducted special raids across different areas of the capital based on information provided by Afsana and arrested 5 of her “accomplices”.
Preliminary interrogation revealed that the arrestees were active members of an organized gang of robbers, DMP said.

A total of 14 cases had been filed and two warrants had been issued against the arrestees at different police stations, including Gulshan.
