Robbers loot commuters & rape woman on Ctg-bound bus
Seven armed men posing as passengers allegedly hijacked a Chattogram-bound bus in Tangail, robbed commuters of cash and belongings, and raped a 25-year-old woman at gunpoint.
The spine-chilling crime occurred in the Raktipara area of Tangail's Madhupur upazila off the Dhaka-Tangail Highway in the early hours of Wednesday, police said.
Sarkar Md Kaisar, superintendent of Tangail Police, said the bus of ‘Eagle Paribahan’, with 24 passengers on board, was on its way to Chattogram from Kushtia late on Tuesday night when the crime occurred.
Three of the seven robbers boarded the bus around 11pm on Tuesday after it resumed its journey following a stopover at a hotel in Sirajganj district. And some 5-10 minutes later, four more got into the bus, police said.

"Around 12am on Wednesday, when the bus took the busy Dhaka-Tangail Highway in the Natiapara area, the robbers whiffed out guns, hijacked the vehicle and forced the driver to drive towards Madhupur upazila," the SP said.
On a desolate stretch, the armed gang robbed the commuters of cash, jewellery and mobile phones. "The robbers then blindfolded the passengers and raped the woman commuter on board," the SP said.
The passengers' ordeal continued for over three hours till the seven criminals forced them to get off the bus and drove the heavy vehicle towards Raktipara's Jam-e-Mosque, where they abandoned it and fled with the booty, police said.
“Detectives are investigating the crime and all the robbers will be arrested soon,” said SP Kaiser. "The woman is being treated at Tangail General Hospital, and her medical test is slated for Wednesday."
Young girl gang raped in Chattogram
A young girl has reportedly been raped by four men on Bayezid-Fouzdarhat Link road in Chattogram, police said on Monday.
The crime was took place on Saturday under no 2 bridge of Sitakunda upazila.
The girl is now undergoing treatment at One-Stop-Crisis Centre of Chattogram Medical College and Hospital.

Waliullah Akbar, officer-in-charge of Akbar Shah Police Station, said the rapists with a promise to provide her a good job, took the girl to the area where they were supposed to meet person for her job.
At one stage, they violated her in turns.
Later, she made a phone call at emergency helpline 999 and then police rescued the girl.

Following her statement, police arrested one Bappi in this connection on Sunday.
Police also identified two associates of Bappi—Ripon and Russel.
Sexagenarian to serve life for violating fourth-grader in Chattogram
A Chattogram court Wednesday sentenced a sexagenarian to life term imprisonment for violating a fourth grader in Mirsharai upazila of the district in 2019.
It also fined the convict Tk 3,00,000, in default of which he will have to serve one more year in jail.
Chattogram Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Jude Begum Ferdous Ara handed down the verdict in presence of the accused.
The convict was identified as Md Akramul Hoque, son of late Sadik Rahman at Dakkhin Azamnagar village in Hinguli union of the upazila. He was a CNG run-auto rickshaw driver by profession.
Khandakar Ariful Alam, public prosecutor (PP) of the court, said that the accused used to lure the class-four student by offering chocolate and other things to get on his vehicle on her way to school and home.
The accused raped the minor girl taking her to an isolated place when she was returning home from school on August 5, 2019.
Though the vicious man threatened the girl not to share the matter with anyone, she disclosed it to family members.
The victim’s mother filed a case against the accused with the local police station two days after the incident.
Police pressed a charge sheet against the accused before the court on December 7, 2019, while the court framed the charge sheet on October 12, 2020.

Rickshaw puller awarded prize for 999 call to save women in Chattogram
Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) Wednesday awarded a prize to the rickshaw puller, who phoned the national hotline 999 to save a housewife from the clutches of rapists on July 18, for his courage and awareness in the port city.
Krishna Pada Roy, newly appointed commissioner of the CMP, was awarded the prize for the outstanding job of the rickshaw puller identified as Md Abdul Hannan, 32.
CMP Additional Deputy Commissioner Md Ameer Jafar and Deputy Commissioner (North) Mokhlesur Rahman and among others were present during the prize ceremony.
Mentionable, a 23-year-old housewife was returning to her Sholoshahar’s residence by a rickshaw after attending a wedding ceremony in the GEC area around 1:00 am on July 18.
A group of three youths interrupted the rickshaw in front of one ‘Sadia’s Kitchen’ and took her to a makeshift tea stall where six culprits violated her in phases.
Though the rickshaw puller was asked to leave the spot and not to share it with anyone, he informed another rickshaw puller after going a few yards.
The second rickshaw puller phoned the national hotline 999 seeking help in this connection.
Responding to the call, a team of law enforcement agencies from nearby Khulshi police station rushed to the spot and rescued the victim. Moreover, police arrested three of the culprits from the spot.

Three to die for raping girl in Feni
Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal here on Thursday sentenced three people to death for raping a girl in front of her mother 19 years ago.
The tribunal also fined the convicts Tk 2 lakh each.
The convicts are—Abul Kashem, son of Fakir Ahmed, Md Latu, son of Abdur Rashid and Jahangir Alam, son of Abul Kalam from Nababpur union under Feni’s Fulgazi upazila.

Mohammad Faruk, another accused in the case, was acquitted by the court as charges against him could not be proved.
Public Prosecutor Farid Ahmed Hazari said that all the convicts except Faruk were tried in absentia.
According to the case statement, Abul Kashem, Latu, Jahangir Alam and Mohammad Faruk abducted the victim and her mother on the night of May 13, 2003. Later, they raped the girl keeping her mother at gunpoint.

The victim’s mother logged a complaint with Fulgazi police station in this regard the next day.
Video of Shariatpur schoolgirl's rape released on internet
A schoolgirl was allegedly raped at a birthday party at Mahishar union under Shariatpur’s Vedorganj upazila recently, with a video of the incident released on the internet.
Although the family of the victim has filed a case in this regard, they are worried about getting justice due to threats from the accused.
According to the victim, the accused are her classmates. They raped her at a birthday party and recorded the incident.
“They tried to abuse me sexually by showing that video to me. They uploaded the video online as I didn’t comply with their demands,” the victim said.

The accused are- Arpan Das, 19, son of Ashim Das and Durjoy Das, 19, son of Komal Das from Daspara village under Mahishar union and Mubdi Sarker, 18, son of Moktar Sarder from South Mahishar village.
All of them are students of Sajanpur Islamia High School.
According to the police, Durjoy and Mubdi took the victim to Arpan’s house telling her to attend a birthday party some months ago. There they raped her and recorded the crime in video format. The trio was using the video to take advantage of the girl. When they couldn’t succeed with their plans, they shared the video online.
The victim has been unable to go to her school since then due to fear of social vilification.
The victim filed a case against the three under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act and the Pornography Act on June 5. But police members are yet to arrest the accused. The victim’s family has said that they are receiving threats from the families of the accused as they are influential in the area.
Sub-inspector (SI) of Vedorganj police station and Investigation Officer (IO) of the case Rajib Sutradhar said that the victim’s family has filed a case over charges of rape and making the video viral.
“An investigation is going on and efforts are on to nab the culprits,” said the IO.
RAB arrests serial rapist from Dhaka
Rab has arrested a man accused in a case over raping a schoolgirl at gunpoint in Pirojpur district.
Accused Shamim Hossain Mridha, 32, has been described by law enforcement agencies as a serial rapist.
Shamim, hailing from Pirojpur’s Bhandaria upazila, was arrested on Thursday from Dhaka's Uttara, Rab said.
According to the police, Shamim raped the schoolgirl at gunpoint on June 11. The girl's mother filed a case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act with Bhandaria police station in this regard following the crime.
Students and teachers from the girl’s school also staged a human chain asking for justice for the survivor.
Members from the Detective Branch of Rab Headquarters and a team of Rab-8 arrested Shamim from the capital. The arrestee has confessed his crime, saying that he raped the girl while she was returning home after exam at her school.
The accused fled the scene after the assault and hid in Dhaka to avoid arrest, according to the case.
He also tried to rape a SSC examinee after breaking in to her house during wee hours on January 26, 2015. He also raped a madrassah-student threatening with a chopper on November 1, 2017.
Shamim also harassed another madrassah-student sexually on October 10, 2021.
He works both as a CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver and a private car driver in Dhaka’s Babubazar and Gabtoli areas. He became a criminal at the age of 16 through consuming and trading drugs and other criminal activities, police said.
He used to hide in various places in the country including Dhaka, Kishoreganj, Barishal and Khulna after raping and harassing girls. He even used to rape girls while he was in hiding.
There are more than 10 rape and drug cases against him at various police stations across the country, including Bhandaria. He was even in jail four or five times, according to police records.
There are also a total of six arrest warrants against him in different police stations.
Rab members have said that a legal proceeding in underway against the arrestee.
Suspended PBI official sent to jail over Khulna college girl’s rape
A tribunal here on Wednesday sent a suspended official of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to jail in a case for raping a 20-year-old college student in Khulna.
The suspended PIB official is inspector Manjur Hasan Masud.

Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 Judge Mst Dilruba Sultana passed the order turning down the bail plea when Masud surrendered before the court.
Earlier, accused Masud was granted bail for 14 days by the High Court on May 26 in the case.
On May 25, he was suspended from his post.
According to the case, the victim was raped allegedly by a PBI official at Mirzapur Road in Khulna city on May 15 promising her to solve the problem when she went to police station following a cyber-issue.

The victim immediately lodged an FIR at the Khulna Sadar police station, said Hasan Al Mamun, officer-in-charge (OC) of Khulna Sadar police station.
A case was filed after a medical examination at the One Stop Crisis Center (OCC) of Khulna Medical College Hospital.
Rape-accused escapes from police custody in Gaibandha
An accused in a rape and kidnapping case has fled from police custody in front of Gobindaganj Police Station in Gaibandha, police said on Tuesday.
The accused was identified as Samiul Islam, 22, of the upazila.
Police arrested Samiul in a rape and kidnapping case from Matlab of Chandpur district on Monday night, said Ezar Uddin, officer-in-charge (OC) of Gobindaganj police station.

Samiul fled with handcuffs on after pushing a constable when he was taken off from a police van early Tuesday, he added.
“Efforts are on to nab the accused,” said the OC.
Bagerhat: Man jailed until death for raping woman & killing two grandchildren
A Bagerhat tribunal on Monday sentenced a man to life imprisonment unto death in a case filed for violating a woman and killing her two grandchildren in 2014.
Bagerhat Woman and child Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Md Nure Alam handed the punishment to Bachchu Mridha, 58.
The tribunal also ordered the convict to pay a fine Tk 20,000 to the rape survivor.

The tribunal acquitted an accused of the case identified as Khokon Khan as allegations brought against him could not be proved.
According to the prosecution, Bachchu along with his associates barged into the house of Farhad Mridha on September 11, 2014 and violated the woman when she was sleeping with her two grandchildren—Mirajul and Riajul.
When the two children woke up they started screaming.
Later, Bachchu and his associates killed them and dumped their bodies in a water body adjacent to the house.
They also beat the woman up and left her presuming her to be dead.

Lokman Hossain lodged a complaint with Morrelganj Police against five people and police later registered an FIR in this connection the following day.
