Global Covid cases near 232 million
The overall number of global Covid cases is fast approaching 232 million amid spread of Delta variant.
According to Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the total case count mounted to 231,517,674 with 4,742,776 fatalities as of Sunday morning.
The US has recorded 42, 940, 233 cases to date and more than 687,746 people have died so far from the virus in the country, said university data.

Brazil which has been experiencing new wave of cases since January, registered 21,343,304 cases. Brazil's Covid-19 death toll has also risen to 594,200.
India's COVID-19 tally rose to 33,624,419 on Saturday as 29,616 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours across the country, showed the federal health ministry's latest data.
Besides, as many as 290 deaths due to the pandemic since Friday morning took the death toll to 446,658.
Situation in Bangladesh
Covid-19 in Bangladesh claimed 25 more lives, the lowest in four months, and infected 818 in 24 hours till Saturday morning.
The number of single-day Covid cases was recorded below 1,000 in May 17 last, logging 698 cases. The new cases were detected after testing 17,818 samples slightly raising the daily case positivity rate to 4.59 percent from Friday’s 4.54 percent, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
Bangladesh saw its highest-ever 16,230 daily Covid cases on July 28.
The new numbers took the country’s total fatalities to 27,393 while the caseload mounted to 1,550,371.

Meanwhile, the fatality rate increased slightly to 1.77 percent from yesterday’s 1.76 percent.On Thursday, the country recorded the lowest Covid deaths of 24 since May 15 when the country saw 22 single-day deaths.
Besides, the recovery rate increased slightly to 97.41 per cent on Friday with the recovery of 965 patients during the 24-hour period.
So far, 1,510,167 people have recovered from the deadly virus infections, the DGHS added.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the daily case positivity rate remaining at 5 percent or below for 14 days is considered safe for mass unlocking.
However, Bangladesh eased its lockdown restrictions on August 11, even though public health experts had warned of Delta variant spread.
Global Covid cases approach 230 million
The overall number of global Covid cases is fast nearing 230 million, as the world still grapples to contain the second outbreak of the pandemic even with mass inoculations underway.
The total caseload and fatalities from the virus stand at 229,513,803 and 4,707,676, respectively, as of Wednesday morning, according to Johns Hopkins University (JHU).
So far, 5,962,946,306 Covid vaccine doses have been administered across the globe.

The US has logged 42,410,289 cases and 678,405 deaths to date, according to the JHU data.
Covid-19 deaths in the US have climbed to an average of more than 1,900 a day for the first time since early March, with experts saying the virus is preying largely on a distinct group: 71 million unvaccinated Americans, according to AP.
Now, nearly 64% of the US population has received at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine. And yet, average deaths per day have climbed 40% over the past two weeks, from 1,387 to 1,947, according to the data.
Brazil currently has the world's second-highest pandemic death toll after the United States and the third-largest caseload after the United States and India.
The country has recorded 21,259,122 cases with 591,440 fatalities so far, according to its health ministry.
India's Covid-19 tally rose to 33,504,534 on Tuesday, as 26,115 new cases were registered in 24 hours across the country, as per the health ministry data.

Besides, as many as 252 deaths due to the pandemic were reported during the period, taking the total fatalities to 445,385.
According to Times of India, the country’s Covid-19 vaccination coverage has crossed the 82 crore landmark milestone on Tuesday. The figures were released by the Indian government.
Situation in Bangladesh
Covid-19 claimed 26 more lives and infected 1562 others in 24 hours till Tuesday morning.
The latest cases emerged after 33,375 samples were tested, showing a decline in the daily case positivity rate -- from 5.67 percent to 4.69 percent, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said.
The case positivity rate is the lowest in around six months as the country last recorded 4.98 percent daily case positivity rate on March 8 this year.
According to DGHS, the fresh numbers took the country’s total Covid-19 fatalities to 27,277 on Tuesday while the caseload mounted to 1,545,800.
Meanwhile, it said, the fatality rate remained static at 1.76 percent.

Besides, the recovery rate also remained static with 97.34 percent on Tuesday, with the recovery of 1,603 patients during the 24-hour period.
So far, 1,504,709 people have recovered from the deadly virus infections, according to the DGHS figures.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that the daily case positivity rate should remain at 5% or below for 14 days before mass unlocking.
Global Covid cases near 218 million
The overall number of global Covid cases is fast nearing 218 million, as the world is still struggling to contain the second wave of the pandemic even with mass inoculations underway.
According to US-based Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the total case count mounted to 217,632,545 and the death toll to 4,518,377 on Wednesday morning.
So far, 5,277,415,976 vaccine doses have been administered across the globe.

The US, which is the world's worst-hit country in terms of both cases and deaths, has so far logged 39,197,606 cases. Besides, 640,089 people have lost their lives in the US to date, as per the JHU data.
Brazil currently has the world's second-highest pandemic death toll after the United States and the third-largest caseload after the United States and India.
The country has recorded 20,776,870 cases with 580,413 fatalities so far, according to the health ministry.
India's Covid-19 tally rose to 32,768,880 on Tuesday as 30,941 new cases were registered in 24 hours across the country, as per the federal health ministry.

A total of 350 deaths due to the pandemic since Monday morning took the total death toll to 438,560 -- the world's third-highest after the US and Brazil.
Situation in Bangladesh
Both the Covid-19 cases and fatalities in Bangladesh dropped further as the country logged 86 deaths and 3,357 new cases, respectively, in 24 hours till Tuesday morning.
The country last saw 112 coronavirus-related deaths on June 29 and the upswing in the fatalities reached its peak on August 5 and 10 when 264 deaths were recorded.

The fresh numbers have pushed the country’s total fatalities to 26,195, while the cases reached 1,500,618, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
The new cases were detected after the test of 28,097 samples in the past 24 hours, which reduced the daily case positivity rate to 11.95% from Monday’s 12.07%, said the DGHS.
Meanwhile, the government aims at vaccinating two crore people against Covid by next month, Health Minister Zahid Maleque said on Tuesday.
Global Covid cases top 181 million
The global Covid-19 caseload surged past 181 million Tuesday even with mass inoculations underway.
The total caseload and fatalities stand at 181,388,210 and 3,928,804, respectively, as of Tuesday morning, according to Johns Hopkins University (JHU).

Situation in Bangladesh
Bangladesh on Monday reported a record-high number of daily Covid-19 infections, after confirming its first cases on March 8 last year and 7,626 on April 7.
On Monday, 8,364 people were diagnosed with corona from 35,059 sample tests in the preceding 24 hours, bringing the country's caseload since the beginning of the pandemic to 896,770.
New infections have been averaging 5,000 for the past few days – 75% of the peak. The highest daily average was reported on April 9.
The country, battling to get a second coronavirus wave under control, also reported more than 100 deaths for a second straight day. The new number, 104 deaths, took the country's toll to 14,276.
Bangladesh reported 119 deaths on Sunday, its highest-ever daily fatality from the pandemic. Also, the country's positivity rate reached its peak at 23.86%, which was recorded at 23.57% on April 8.

Meanwhile, the fatality rate almost remained unchanged at 1.59% from Sunday's 1.60% and the recovery rate dropped to 90.06%, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
Khulna division reported the highest 35 deaths, Dhaka 27, Chattogram 19, Rangpur nine, Rajshahi seven, Mymensingh five and Barishal two deaths.
Global Covid-19 cases top 178 million
Over 178 million people have been found infected with Covid-19 as many countries are still grappling with a spike in cases and deaths across the world.
The total caseload and deaths from the virus stand at 178, 123, 144 and 3,857,806, respectively as of Sunday morning, as per the latest data released by Johns Hopkins University (JHU).
So far, 2,566,401, 042 Covid vaccine doses have been administered across the globe, according to the university data.

The US has logged 33,537, 807 cases and 601,748 deaths to date. The death toll in the United States is the highest in the world.
In Brazil, the death toll from the virus has surpassed half a million after recording 2,301 more deaths from the fatal disease in the past 24 hours, the health ministry said Saturday.
With the national death toll reaching 500,800, Brazil has become the second country in the world to record more than half a million pandemic deaths, after the United States.
The country’s total caseload reached 17,883,750 as the health authorities has logged 82,288 new cases during this period.
India's COVID-19 tally rose to 29,823,546 on Saturday, with 60,753 new cases recorded in the past 24 hours, said the health ministry.

Situation in Bangladesh
Covid-19 in Bangladesh claimed the lives of 67 people in 24 hours until Saturday morning, the highest daily deaths in 48 days.
The country last recorded 69 deaths on May 2 this year.
Meanwhile, 3,057 new infections were detected after testing 16,964 samples, said a handout issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHs).
With these, the country's death toll rose to 13,466 while the caseload to 848,027.
Bangladesh rolls out Sinopharm vaccine
Bangladesh on Saturday started administering Sinopharm vaccine doses across the country, aiming to fight the Covid-19 pandemic.

The vaccination started in the capital and elsewhere of the country with 11 lakh doses of Sinopharm vaccine gifted by China, said the DGHS.
The vaccine doses are being administered at four hospitals in Dhaka district -- Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital, Sir Salimullah Medical College and Hospital, and Mughda Medical College and Hospital.

The global Covid-19 caseload has now surpassed 173.5 million, with the world still struggling to contain the second outbreak of the virus.
The total caseload and fatalities from the virus stand at 173,538,801 and 3,734,654, respectively, as of Tuesday morning, as per the latest data released by Johns Hopkins University (JHU).
So far, 2,139,732,834 doses of vaccine have been administered across the globe, as per the university data.

India's total tally rose to 28,909,975, with 100,636 new cases reported in the past 24 hours, said the federal health ministry.
Besides, as many as 2,427 deaths since Sunday morning pushed the overall death toll to 349,186. This is the first time in the past 45 days when daily deaths due to the pandemic dipped to below the 2,500-mark.
Brazil registered 1,010 more deaths from Covid-19 in the past 24 hours, pushing up the nationwide tally to 474,414, the health ministry said on Monday.
A total of 37,156 new infections were detected during the period, raising the caseload to 16,984,218, the ministry said.

Vaccination drive
Around 7,363 people have received the second dose of Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine in the past 24 hours.
A total number of 42,16,696 people have so far got their dose of this vaccine, while the number is 58,20,015 for the first dose.
Besides, the total number of people receiving their first jab of Chinese Sinopharm vaccine reached 2,162 during the period.
Bangladesh launched its vaccination drive on February 7 with Oxford-AstraZeneca doses bought from India's Serum Institute.
So far, four vaccines – Oxford-AstraZeneca (Covishield), Sputnik-V, Sinopharm, and Pfizer-BioNTech – have got the approval for emergency use in Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, seven million doses of Oxford-AstraZeneca Covishield vaccine reached Bangladesh, and the governments of India and China gave 3.2 million doses and 500,000 doses of coronavirus vaccine as gifts, respectively.

High vaccination can help reduce risk of variants: WHO
A top World Health Organization official estimated Monday that Covid vaccination coverage of at least 80% is needed to significantly lower the risk that “imported” coronavirus cases like those linked to new variants could spawn a cluster or a wider outbreak, reports AP.
Dr Michael Ryan, WHO’s emergencies chief, told a news conference that ultimately, “high levels of vaccination coverage are the way out of this pandemic".
Many rich countries have been moving to vaccinate teenagers and children — who have lower risk of more dangerous cases of Covid-19 than the elderly or people with comorbidities — even as those same countries face pressure to share vaccines with poorer ones that lack them.

The US, the worst-hit country in the world, has now surpassed 33 million confirmed cases of Covid-19, as per the Johns Hopkins data.
To be specific, coronavirus cases in the US reached 33,306,908 on Thursday. Covid-19 deaths, on the other hand, surged to 595,822.
Brazil on Wednesday reported 2,507 more deaths from Covid-19, taking the nationwide tally to 467,706, the Ministry of Health said.

Vaccine procurement
The first batch of 1.06 lakh doses of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine arrived in Dhaka on Monday night under the global vaccine initiative Covax.
On May 27, the Directorate General of Drug Administration approved the emergency use of the Pfizer vaccine.
So far, four vaccines – Oxford-AstraZeneca (Covishield), Sputnik-V, Sinopharm, and Pfizer-BioNTech – have got emergency use authorisation in Bangladesh.
The Cabinet Committee on Public Purchase on May 27 gave the final approval to a proposal of the Health and Family Welfare Ministry to procure 1.5 crore Chinese Sinofarm Covid-19 vaccine.
As per the approval, the Health Services Division under the Health and Family Welfare Ministry will procure a total of 15 million (1.5 crore) vaccine doses in three months -- June, July and August.

Border closure continues
Bangladesh on Sunday announced an extension of border closure with India by another two weeks, from June 1 to June 14, as the coronavirus situation hardly shows any signs of improvement.

The border with India will remain closed till June 14, but the movement of goods will remain uninterrupted, according to officials.
"We've extended it (border closure) for 14 more days and will evaluate the situation further," a senior official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told UNB on Sunday.
Bangladesh decided to close its border with India for any kind of movement except that of cargo on April 26, which was extended till May 31 to control the spread of coronavirus as the situation in the neighbouring country deteriorated.
The cross-border movement of people between Bangladesh and India has remained suspended since then.
Lockdown in Chapainawabganj extended
The local administration has extended the ongoing lockdown in Chapainawabganj for another week due to the worsening Covid-19 situation.

The restrictions will remain in force from June 1 to June 7, said Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Manjurul Hafiz at a press briefing on Monday noon.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s ongoing lockdown period has been extended by another week till June 6 to contain the virus spread.
Besides, district administrations have been given the authority to enforce lockdowns in their respective areas if the Covid situation deteriorates there, the Cabinet Secretary said on Monday.
Global cases hit 167 mln with 3.46 mln fatalities
As the world continues to grapple with Covid-19 infections, over 167 million people have been found infected with the deadly virus until Monday.
According to Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the total caseload reached 167,177,203 while the death toll from the virus mounted to 3,463,813.
The US has logged 33,117,656 cases with 589,893 fatalities as of Monday morning.

Situation in Bangladesh
As Bangladesh battles with the Covid-19 pandemic, its health authorities recorded 28 more deaths and 1,354 cases in 24 hours until Sunday morning.
The infection rate rose to 8.90 percent from Saturday’s 8.41 percent while the mortality rate stood at 1.57 percent, said a handout issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
The new cases of infections were recorded after testing 15,205 samples.
With the fresh deaths during the period, the coronavirus fatalities rose to 12,376 in the country.
The total caseload now stands at 7,89,080 with the new ones, the handout added.
Lockdown extended
The government has extended the ongoing lockdown by another week until May 30 allowing public buses to run at half of their capacities considering the current coronavirus situation in the country.

The Cabinet Division issued a circular in this regard on Sunday.
All concerned, including passengers, will have to maintain health protocols like wearing masks, says the circular.
