Death in police custody: 2 cops withdrawn in Gazipur
Two policemen of Gazipur Metropolitan Police were withdrawn from their duty on Wednesday over the death of a trader in police custody.
The policemen are Mahbub and Nurul Islam, both assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs) of Bason Police Station, Gazipur Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Crime) Abu Torab Mohammad Shamsur Rahman told UNB.
Meanwhile, a three-member probe committee headed by Additional Police Commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police Md Delwar Hossain has been formed to investigate this incident, he added.
Local people said a team of police from Bason Police Station arrested four people from Bhogra bypass area on January 14 on charges of gambling.
Later, police released three of them except Rabiul Islam, 40, a resident of Peyara Bagan in Gazipur city.

On Tuesday night, police went to the house of Rabiul and took a signature of his wife on a white paper, they said.
Soon after that, Rabiul’s wife came to know that Rabiul died in the night.
Enraged by the death of Rabiul, local people, equipped with sticks, put up barricades on Dhaka-Tangail and Dhaka-Mymensingh highways on Wednesday morning, disrupting traffic movement.
COD to destroy useless ammo, explosives from January 29 to February 23
The Central Ordnance Depot (COD) of the army will destroy useless ammunition and explosives at its demolition ground in Gazipur's Sreepur from January 29 to February 23.
The destruction of the useless ammunition and explosives will be held from 7am to 6pm each day, according to the Inter Services Public Relation Directorate.

During the period, the movement of general people and domestic animals has been prohibited within a four-kilometre radius of the scene of destruction.
RMG workers set fire to 4 buses over rumour in Gazipur
Readymade Garment (RMG) workers set fire to four buses and vandalised several others following a rumour over the death of one of their fellows on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway on Tuesday evening.
Witnesses said a speeding bus of ‘Anabil Paribahan’ hit an elderly woman and her grandson while they were crossing the highway in Chhaydhan area around 6.45pm, leaving them injured.

A rumour was spread in the area that an RMG worker died after being hit by the bus.
Enraged by the news, the workers set fire to four buses and vandalised several others resulting in long gridlocks on both sides of the highway.
Abdullah Al Arefin, deputy director at Gazipur Fire Service and Civil Defence department, said on information two firefighting units rushed to the spot and tamed the flame.

Md Alamgir Hossain, deputy commissioner (Traffic) of Gazipur Metropolitan Police, said the injured were admitted to a hospital and undergoing treatment there.
Prisoner dies while undergoing treatment at Gazipur hospital
A prisoner who fell sick at Kashimpur Jail of Gazipur died at Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital in the early hours of Monday.
The deceased was Md Nehal Uddin, 65, son of Kanu Mia of Bagchapair village of Kaliakoir upazila of the district. He had been in Kashimpur Jail since November, 2022.
Nehal Uddin was arrested in a case filed against him under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act at Kaliakoir police station, said Amirul Islam, jail superintendent of Kashimpur Central Jail Part-2.

“He suddenly felt sick at Kashimpur Central Jail Part-1 unit around 11:30 pm on Sunday. First, he was taken to the jail hospital and later sent to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital for better treatment. A doctor of the hospital declared him dead around 2:30 am on Monday,” said Amirul Islam.
He said the body will be handed over to the relatives of the deceased after completion of the legal procedure.
RMG workers stage demo for arrears in Gazipur; 10 hurt in clash with cops
At least 10 people were injured during a clash between police and workers of a garment factory in Gazipur on Tuesday as they blocked Dhaka-Tangail highway demanding arrears.
The workers of New Line Clothing Limited Factory put up blockaed on the highway near Mouchak area around 9 am, disrupting movement of all kind of vehicles on the road.

As police tried to remove them from the road agitated workers started throwing brick chips, leading to a chase-counter-chase, said Sahidur Rahman, in charge of Mouchak police outpost.
Fire at Gazipur textile mill under control after 12 hours
A fire that broke out at a textile mill in Gazipur early Tuesday is now under control but could not be doused completely.
The fire started around 12 am inside a cotton warehouse of Shamim Textile Mill at Bhabanipur area in Sadar upazila, said Md Belal Hossain, warehouse inspector of Sreepur Fire Service.

Six firefighting units from Sreepur and Joydebpur started a strenuous effort to bring the fire under control immediately after being informed, he said.
“It took time to bring the flames under control as there was cotton in the warehouse. It may take more time to extinguish the fire completely, but it will not spread anymore,” Abdullah Al Arefin, Deputy Assistant Director of Gazipur Fire Service, told UNB.
The workers also helped to bring the fire under control, said the fire service official.

No injury or casualty was reported but a huge amount of cotton was gutted, said Inspector Belal.
The cause of the fire can be determined after an investigation, he said.
Meanwhile, due to the fire, three more factories inside the same complex have remained closed. Kunal Kanti, General Manager of Shamim Textile Mill said they are estimating a loss above Tk 100 crore from the fire.
Gazipur RMG factory fire tamed after two hours
A fire that quickly tore through the warehouse of an apparel factory in Gazipur Friday morning was brought under control after nearly two hours, authorities said.
Fortunately, no casualties were reported till the filling of this report.
The blaze began around 8:45am inside a tin shed room of Orbit Textile Factory at the Bhabanipur area of Sadar upazila, Abdullah Al Arefin, deputy assistant director of Gazipur fire service, said.

On information, two firefighting units of Sreepur fire service responded to the fire and the responders could tame the flames at 10:30am, he said.
"The fire gutted cotton and other materials. However, the reasons for the mishap and the extent of damage could not be confirmed immediately," the fire service official added.
Jhut godown catches fire in Gazipur
A fire broke out in a jhut (unused fabric of garment factories) godown at Konabari in Gazipur early Sunday.
The fire originated around 1:30 am in the godown at Notun Bazar and spread soon, said Abdullah Al Arefin, deputy assistant director of Gazipur Fire Service and civil defence control room.

On information, six firefighting units from Gazipur, Kaliakair and Kashimpur rushed to the spot and doused the fire after five hours of frantic effort, he added.
However, no injuries or causalities were reported.
The origin of the fire could not be known yet, said the officer.
Two brothers killed in Gazipur road crash
Two brothers met a tragic end after a covered van ran over the motorbike they were on, in Kaliakair upazila of Gazipur on Tuesday afternoon.
Al Amin, 32, and his younger brother Anik Hossain, 28, of Harinhati village under Kaliakair upazila.
Atikur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Salna Highway police station, said elder brother Amin had bought the motorcycle after returning from Singapore around six months back.

The accident occurred in the afternoon as the covered van ran over the bike while it was taking a U-turn on Kaliakair-Nabinagar Road in Chandra area.
Amin died on the spot, while Anik was rushed to Kaliakair Upazila Health Complex in a critically injured state. He succumbed to his injuries there.
Though the covered van was seized, its driver managed to flee. OC Atikur Rahman said legal action will be taken in this connection.
Gazipur filling station fire death toll rises to 2
The death toll from the Gazipur filling station fire rose to two with the death of another victim at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) early Monday.
The deceased was identified as covered van driver Parvez, 33, of Chandpur district.
Parvez, who sustained 86 percent burns, breathed his last at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery of DMCH around 6:30 am, said the hospital’s police outpost in-charge Md Bacchu Mia.
On October 13, the fire broke out in a cylinder-laden van while refuelling gas at Wahed Ali Filling Station in Gazipur’s Borobari area and then spread, leaving seven people injured.
The seven people who sustained burn injuries in the fire were all standing nearby. They were first taken to Tahirunnesa Memorial Medical College Hospital (TMMC) and five of them were shifted to DMCH in a critical condition.
Among them, Mithu, 26, succumbed to his injuries on Friday.
The other injured undergoing treatment at DMCH are Al Amin, 25, Anwar, 30, and Sirajul Islam, 28.
