Cumilla councillor murder: arrestee makes confessional statement before court
One of the arrestees in the Cumilla ward councillor Syed Mohammad Sohel murder case gave his confessional statement on Thursday.
Accused Emran Hossain Rishat, 23, a member of the killing squad gave his confessional statement before Cumilla Chief Judicial Magistrate Trial Court-1 judge Farhana Akter.
During his three-day remand, Rishat agreed to record his confessional statement, said Parimal Das, deputy inspector of detective branch of the district police.
Rishat, in his statement, confessed that he participated in the killing and supplied arms for the mission, said Parimal.

Earlier on Monday, police arrested Nazim and Rishat, two of the suspected hit squad members who were not named as accused in the case.
On Tuesday, a Cumilla court placed them on a three-day remand each for interrogation and the next day Nazim gave his confessional statement before the magistrate.
On November 22, Sohel, Cumilla City Corporation (CCC) councilor of Ward-17, and one of his aides were killed, while four others sustained injuries when gunmen opened fire in his office in Pathuariapara.
Based on his younger brother Syed Rumon's complaint, as many as 21 people, some 10 of them unidentified, were booked by the Kotwali police for the double murder.

So far, seven accused and four suspects were arrested in this case, while another accused Rony remains absconding.
Meanwhile, prime accused Shah Alam, Sabbir Hossain, Sajon Mia were killed in alleged gunfights with police.

Cumilla City Mayor Monirul Haque Sakku thanked Prime Minister Hasina, who chaired the committee meeting on Tuesday, on behalf of the residents.
"The residents of Cumilla are very happy to receive this gift on the Golden Jubilee of independence and the centenary of Father of the Nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman," an elated Mayor said.
The project plan includes great infrastructural development in the city, officials said.
Cumilla City Corporation execution officer Shafiqul Islam said the Mayor, engineers and officials of the civic body have all been working on this mega project for the past one year as per the government's directions.

"The corporation is, in fact, adhering to all the step-by-step directions of the Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives," he said.
"Through the implementation of this project, everyone's dream of building a modern, developed, livable city will come true," said Shafiqul.
20 gold bars seized in Cumilla; one held
Police arrested a man along with 20 gold bars weighing over 2 kg from Rarirchar area of Chandina upazila in Cumilla on Friday.
The estimated worth of the gold bars is 1.3 crore.
The arrestee was identified as Mahmudul Haque, son of Abdus Sabur, hailing from sotobarkona village in Satkania upazila of Chattogram district.

7 arrested for attacking presiding officer in Cumilla UP election
Police have arrested seven people in connection with beating and knifing a presiding officer and a policeman during the union council election in Cumilla's Barura.The arrestees have been named as Saiful, Shaheen, Qadir, Rahman, Saddam, Khair and Ahsan.They were sent to jail after being produced to the court on Thursday, police sources said.It is learned that the supporters of two member candidates tried to occupy the polling centre at Dhewatali Government Primary School in Jhalom union of Baruda upazila on 28 November.During this time, they vandalize the furniture and snatch the ballot papers.

They attacked and injured Golam Sarwar Bhuiyan, presiding officer in charge of the centre and Abu Hanif, sub-inspector of police. Barura Thana Officer-in-Charge Iqbal Bahar Majumder said that so far Barura Thana police have arrested seven people. Efforts are being made to arrest the rest.The culprits will be brought under the law, he said.
Bus hits motorbike killing 3 on Chandpur-Cumilla highway
Three youths riding a motorbike on way to a tourist spot were killed after a collision with a speeding bus on Chandpur-Cumilla highway on Friday, police said.
The accident near Hajiganj’s Dherra CNG station occurred at around 1.30 pm during the Jumma prayers.
The deceased were identified as Sohag Hossain, 30, Md. Monir Hossain, 30, and Md. Sujan Hossain, 28, residents of Belashwar area of Chandina in Cumilla.

Citing eyewitnesses Hajiganj police sub-inspector Joynal Abedin six young men were going from Chandina in Cumilla to Chandpur Molhead tourist spot on two motorcycles. At Dherra under Hajiganj one of the motorcycles collided head-on with a passenger bus coming from the opposite leaving three riders of a bike dead on the spot.
Hundreds of vehicles were stranded on road after the accident.

Meanwhile, locals managed to seize the bus but the driver managed to escape.
Joynal said that the bodies were taken to the police station.
Legal action would be taken after the autopsy, he said.
Cumilla councillor's murder: 2 more accused arrested
Police on Sunday night arrested two more accused in the murder case of Cumilla ward councillor Syed Mohammad Sohel.
The arrestees are Jishan Mia, age unknown, and Md Rabby Islam Antu Prakash,19, said Md Sohan Sarkar, additional superintendent of Cumilla sadar circle police.
A special team of police arrested accused Jishan from Pachthubi area under the Kotwali police station around 11pm Sunday, Sohan Sarkar said.

Later, Antu, an accused found in the case investigation, was arrested from Debidwar police station around 11:45 pm, said the Superintendent of police.
So far, a total of five people have been arrested in connection with this murder.
Earlier on Saturday Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) members arrested Md Ashikur Rahman Rocky and Md Alam Mia, and on Wednesday arrested another accused Sumon in connection with the murder.
Police on Sunday sought seven-day in remand for each arrestee producing them before court but the appeal got rejected, said Md Sohan Sarkar.

Presiding officer, police stabbed in Cumilla poll violence
A presiding officer and a policeman were stabbed at a polling centre in Cumilla’s Barura upazila during the ongoing UP polls on Sunday, police said.
The injured were identified as Presiding officer Golam Sarwar Bhuiyan and SP Abu Hanif.

Police said Presiding Officer Golam Sarwar Bhuiyan was stabbed on his left hand and SI Abu Hanif was hacked in his waist when they tried to stop some miscreants from capturing the polling centre at Dewatali Government Primary School in Jalam union at 11am. The miscreants also snatched the SP’s pistol.
Later, the presiding officer was sent to the Upazila Health Complex while the SP Hanif was sent to Cumilla Medical College Hospital in critical condition.

In this regard, Barura Upazila Election Officer Azharul Islam said the polling at the centre will be cancelled due to the violence.
Iqbal Bahar, officer-in-charge of Barura Police Station, said additional forces have been deployed to prevent further violence.

Two people, including a ward councillor of Cumilla City Corporation (CCC), were shot dead and six others injured as gunmen opened fire on them at Pathuariapara in Cumilla city on Monday. The deceased were identified as Syed Mohammad Sohel, councillor of War-17, and Haripada Shaha, 60. A senior police official, wishing anonymity, told UNB that a group of armed miscreants swooped on the business establishments of Sohel and opened fire on him around 4 pm, leaving nine people injured.

The injured were taken to Cumilla Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared Sohel and Haripada dead. Of the injured, the conditions of Awlad Hossain Rizu, 23, Jewell, 40, and Russel, 28, were stated to be critical.

Father’s extramarital affair led to killing of 5-yr old daughter: Rab
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) have arrested a man and his four associates from the city for ‘killing’ his own daughter over his alleged extramarital affair in Debidwar upazila of Cumilla.
The arrestees are victim’s father Md Amir Hossain, 25, Laili Akter, 30, Md Rabiul Awal, 19, Md Rezaul Islam Emon, 22, and Md Sohel Rana, 27. All of them are from Cumilla’s Debidwar upazila.

According to a media release of Rab Headquarters, a team of Rab-11 arrested them conducting a drive in the capital’s Jatrabari area on Tuesday night.
Five-year-old Fahima went missing on November 7 and her father Amir filed a general diary (GD) in this regard on November 11, prompting detectives to launch an investigation, the release said.
Later, police recovered Fahima’s body packed in a sack from a waterbody in Debidwar upazila on Sunday. On the same day, a case was filed against unidentified people at Debidwar Police Station.
During primary investigation, all the arrestees confessed to their involvement in the murder, said Rab.

Amir and Laila stabbed Fahima to death and dumped the body with the help of three others when the girl came to about the illicit relationship between them, it said.
Legal process is underway in this regard, the release added.
UP polls violence leaves one dead in Cumilla
A youth was killed and 20 others were injured at Manikar union in Meghna upazila of Cumilla district during the Union Parishad (UP) polls across the country on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Shaon Mia, a supporter of an independent candidate for chairman post.

Locals said a clash broke out around 12pm between the supporters of Awami League-backed candidate Jakir Hossain and independent candidate Harun-ur-Rashid over establishing dominance at Amirabad Primary School center in the union leaving over 20 people injured.
Later, the injured were sent to Meghna upazila Health Complex where doctors declared Shaon dead.
Dr Salauddin Molla, consultant of the Health Complex, said one of the inured died upon arrival and six others were shifted to Dhaka for better treatment as their condition deteriorated.

Polling began in 835 of 848 UPs at 8am on Thursday and will continue till 4pm.
More than 41,000 candidates, including 3,310 contenders for the post of chairman, are contesting in the countrywide second phase UP election.
