Farmer hacked dead in Kushtia
Miscreants hacked a farmer to death at Nawada Khadimpur village in Kushtia's Mirpur upazila early Monday.
The deceased was identified as Rabiul Islam Rabi,48, son of late Muktar Biswas of Gangpara area of the village.
Ismail Hossain, elder brother of the deceased, said that his brother was sleeping in his house at night.

The miscreants entered the house around 12:30 am and stabbed him multiple times, leaving him seriously injured, he said.
Relatives rescued him and admitted to Kushtia General Hospital. He died around 6:30 am on the way to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for better treatment.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mirpur Police Station Rafiqul Islam said that some people are being interrogated in connection with the murder.
The body was sent to Kushtia General Hospital morgue for post-mortem, he added.

Greece: 32 migrants dead, more than 100 rescued after fishing vessel capsizes
At least 32 people have died off the coast of southern Greece after a fishing boat carrying dozens of migrants capsized and sank, authorities said Wednesday.
A large search and rescue operation was launched in the area. Authorities said 104 people have been rescued so far following the nighttime incident some 75 kilometers (46 miles) southwest of Greece's southern Peloponnese region.

Four of the survivors were hospitalized with symptoms of hypothermia. It was unclear how many passengers might remain missing at sea after the 32 bodies were recovered, the Greek coast guard said.
Six coast guard vessels, a navy frigate, a military transport plane, an air force helicopter, several private vessels and a drone from the European Union border protection agency, Frontex, were taking part in the ongoing search.

The Italy-bound boat is believed to have sailed from the Tobruk area in eastern Libya. The Italian coast guard first alerted Greek authorities and Frontex about the approaching vessel on Tuesday.
Smugglers are increasingly taking larger boats into international waters off the Greek mainland to try to avoid local coast guard patrols.

On Sunday, 90 migrants on a U.S.-flagged yacht were rescued in the area after they made a distress call.
Separately Wednesday, a yacht with 81 migrants on board was towed to a port on the south coast of Greece's island of Crete after authorities received a distress call.

408 deaths in 491 road accidents in May: Road Safety Foundation
In May, there were 491 road accidents in the country, leaving 408 people dead and 631 injured. Of the deceased, 67 were women and 78 children.
As many as 141 people were dead in 156 motorcycle accidents, accounting for 34.55 percent of the total deaths. The motorcycle accident rate is 31.77 percent. As many as 104 pedestrians were killed in accidents, which is 25.49 percent of the total fatalities, according to a press release of the Road Safety Foundation.

The Road Safety Foundation has prepared the report based on information from nine national dailies, seven online news portals and electronic media.
Seventy-two drivers and their assistants were dead in road accidents last month, which is 17.64 percent of the total.
During this period, four people were killed and two were missing in six boat accidents. Twenty-three people were killed and six injured in 25 railway accidents, said the release.

According to statistics on vehicle-based deaths in accidents, 141 motorcyclists and pillion riders were killed (34.55%); bus passengers killed were six (1.47%); truck, covered-van, pickup, tractor, trolley, lorry, tanker riders killed were 36 (8.82%); private car, microbus, ambulance riders dead were 18 (4.41%); 68 three-wheeler passengers (easy bike, auto-rickshaw, mishuk) riders dead (16.66%); 15 (3.67%) killed in locally modified vehicle (Nosimon-Karimon-Mahindra-Brickbhanga machine cars) accidents; and 20 (4.90%) were killed in bicycle-rickshaw-rickshaw van accidents.

According to the Road Safety Foundation's monitoring and analysis, 165 (33.60%) of the accidents occurred on national highways, 201 (40.93%) on regional roads, 73 (14.86%) on rural roads, 48 (9.77%) on urban roads and 4 (0.81%) in other places, it said.
Rohingya youth shot dead in Cox’s Bazar
A 19-year-old Rohingya boy was shot dead allegedly by miscreants at Kutupalong Rohingya camp in Ukhiya upazila on Monday.
The deceased was identified as Mohammad Bashir, son of Rahmat Ullah and resident of No 6 camp.

Sheikh Mohammad Ali, officer-in-charge of Ukhiya Police Station, said a group of masked miscreants, numbering 25-30 , opened fire on the boy, leaving him injured.
Later, he was taken to a hospital where the doctors declared him dead.

The reason behind the killing could not be known immediately.
Police are trying to arrest the attackers, said OC.
Man hacked to death by son in Sylhet
A man was hacked to death allegedly by his son in Sylhet’s Jaintapur upazila on Saturday over a silly matter.
The deceased was identified as Sadhu Patro, 60, resident of the upazila’s Ahmed Nagar Kalichari Chakanagul Cha-Bagan area.
According to locals, there was an argument between the man and his son Chaitanya Patro, 22, and at one stage the son hacked his father with a sharp weapon.
Locals rushed him to the Sylhet M.A.G. Osmani Medical College and Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries later that night.
On information, police conducted a drive in the area and detained him, said Omar Faruque, officer-in-charge of Jaintapur Model Police Station.
A case was filed in this regard, he said.
14 dead, 5 missing in southwest China landslide
A landslide struck a rural district in China's southwestern Sichuan province on Sunday morning, killing 14 people and leaving five others missing, authorities said.
The mountainous region has seen rainfall lasting weeks, saturating the top soil.
More than 180 people were mobilized to help find those buried under the debris in Sichuan's Leshan county, with the search ongoing into the afternoon, the Communist Party committee of Jinhouke district said on its social media account.
With its humid, rainy climate, southwestern China is prone to landslides, especially in areas where there has been large-scale shifting of land due to farming, deforestation or engineering projects.
Bodies of 2 workers recovered from septic tank in Dhaka
The bodies of two workers were recovered from a septic tank of an under-construction building in Uttarkhan area of the capital on Sunday.
The deceased- Md Samad, 55 and Madhu Miah, 42, were from Gaibandha district.
Md Safiqul Islam, deputy assistant director of Fire Service and Civil Defence Dhaka Zone-3, said the workers got trapped inside the septic tank while opening the shuttering there around 9 am.
Being informed, a team from a nearby fire station rushed to the spot and recovered the bodies from the septic tank, he said adding that the bodies were handed over to police.
The cause of the death of the workers could not be known immediately, he added.
Police constable dies from gunshot in city: Colleagues
A police constable died after he allegedly shot himself in the chest with a pistol at Banani Police check-post on Thursday, said a police official quoting his colleagues.
The deceased was identified as Ashrafuzzaman Rony, 22. He used to live in Mirpur Police Lines.
Inspector Bachhu Mia, in-charge of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital police camp, said Rony was on duty at Banani check-post on Banani-11 road.
At one stage he went to the washroom in the morning and the sound of a gunshot was heard from inside, said another police constable at the check-post. He claimed Rony was alone inside the washroom.
After hearing gunshot, his colleagues rushed in and took him to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital where the doctors declared him dead in the morning.

His colleagues who were on duty during the incident suspected that Rony might have killed himself, said Bacchu Mia.
Rony from Dhamrai upazila in Dhaka joined the police force in 2020.
Police are investigating the incident, said Bachhu.
Woman’s throat-slit body recovered in Dhaka’s Tejgaon, 1 detained
The throat-slit body of a woman was recovered from the room of a security guard in the capital’s Tejgaon area early Sunday.
Hailing from Mymensingh, 37-year-old Julekha used to work as housemaid in different houses in the city.
Shah Alam, an inspector (investigation) of Tejgaon police station, said Julekha came to the security guard of ‘Zaman Tower’ in Tejkunipara a couple of days back in search of a job.

Being informed by locals, police recovered the body from Siraj’s room early Sunday, he said adding that police detained security guard Siraj in this connection.
The body was sent to Surawardhy Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy, he said, adding that legal action will be taken after getting the autopsy report.
Farmer found dead in Natore hours after theft bid
The body of a farmer was recovered from a canal hours after his attempt to steal fish from a pond in Baraigram upazila of Natore early Tuesday.
Liakat Ali, 50, was son of Chayen Sarkar of Monpirit village in the upazila.
Abu Siddque, officer-in-charge of Baraigram police station said Liakat, Halim Ali and Amir Chan went to steal fish from the pond at the village on Monday night.
However, Halim was caught red-handed by a guard while the duo managed to flee, he said, adding Liakat had been missing since the incident.
Locals found his body lying on a side of the canal and informed police in the morning, he said.
The body was sent to Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
