Indian youth on plastic pollution awareness tour now in Chandpur
A 20-year-old Indian has been walking across Asian countries – to generate awareness on plastic pollution.
Rohan Agarwal, a resident of Nagpur under the Maharashtra state, has reached Bangladesh after walking 15,000 kms.
He is a student of Government Sikkim Professional University in India.
Rohan said he started walking from the banks of the Ganges in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh on October 24 in 2020.

After traveling to 27 states of his country, Rohan came to Bangladesh through Bilonia border in Feni on October 8, 2022. He visited Chattogram Hill Tracts and came to Chandpur on November 10.
In Chandpur, he met the deputy commissioner, municipality mayor and journalists at the local press club and delivered awareness speech – on the dangers of plastic pollution – at several educational institutions of the district.
“This is my journey to save the planet from plastic pollution. I came to Bangladesh from India and meeting many people along the way,” Rohan said.
He said the world is not only for humans; animals and plants also share the planet. “So, you must be aware of the environment. It is the responsibility of all people.”

“Wherever I go, I talk about the plastic pollution in public places, including schools and colleges. I tell everyone that they should protect the environment,” the youth added.
Body of a man found at Matlab in Chandpur
Police with the help of local residents on Wednesday recovered the body of a local BNP leader from beside a road at Matlab Uttar upazila in Chandpur.
The victim-- Salimullah Lavlu--was a general secretary of Fatehpur Paschim union unit BNP. He was 50 and a resident of Mandartali village under the upazila.
The victim’s son Laviv and some relatives said that one schoolboy named Shipon hit the leg of Laviv after his school on Tuesday.
A brawl broke out between Lavlu and Shipon after the incident.
Later, Shipon along with his friends went to the house of Laviv and threatened them.
Van driver Jahangir Alam spotted the body lying beside the road when he was crossing the area at Mandartali village during early hours on Wednesday.

Mohammad Mohiuddin Mia, officer-in-charge of Motlab Uttar police station, said they rushed to the spot after hearing the news and recovered the body.
The body was sent to Chandpur General Hospital for an autopsy, he said.
The OC said they would wait for the autopsy report to know the reason behind the murder.
No case was filed immediately, he said.
Chandpur fishermen gear up to catch hilsa as ban ends on Friday midnight
Fishermen are gearing up to resume netting, as the 22-day ban on catching, selling, transportation and hoarding of the delicious hilsa ends on Friday midnight.
Fishermen in different districts, including Chandpur, are preparing their fishing nets and trawlers to head to the rivers after 12am.

Like previous years, the ban was imposed on a 90-kilometre-long area from Matlab Shatnol to Haimchar in Chandpur.
The law enforcers seized huge quantities of mother hilsa and fishing nets, trawlers in different parts of the country for catching hilsa defying the ban.
Fisheries department, upazila and district administrations, police and Coast Guard personnel carried out regular drives to make sure that the ban was implemented strictly.
During the ban, around 50,000 fishermen remained unemployed and were allocated 25kg of rice each, which was not enough for them, said local fishers.
Taukir Ahmed, an official from the control room of the district fisheries office, said around 212 fishermen were sent to jail during the ban period in 178 cases.
Besides, 41,855 metres of current nets were seized and destroyed, said head of Chandpur Naval Police Mohammad Kamruzzaman.
The 22-day government ban on hilsa catching, selling, hoarding and transporting came into effect on October 7, with a view to boosting its production.
The ban covered hilsa sanctuaries in six districts -- Barishal, Chandpur, Laxmipur, Bhola, Shariatpur and Patuakhali.

Hilsa, the national fish of Bangladesh, is recognised as a certified patented product of Bangladesh. The marine fish goes to rivers in Bangladesh to lay eggs.
The fish is very popular both in Bangladesh and West Bengal. About 75 per cent of the world's hilsa is netted in Bangladesh.
Chandpur is considered one of the largest trading hubs of hilsa in Bangladesh as the fish from the Padma river is much more popular than the ones that come from other rivers.
Unnamed fishermen sued in Chandpur over rare act of aggression against river cops
Police filed a case accusing some 50 unidentified fishermen over the alleged attack on river police by the fishing community that left six cops injured on Monday night.
Md Kamruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Chandpur River Police Station, said their Assistant Sub-Inspector Saiful Islam filed the case against 50 unidentified fishermen at the police station following the attack.
He, however, said no one could be arrested in this connection.
Fishermen alleged that they only get a 25 kg allotment of rice from the government to survive with family members during the 22-day ban, which is too miserly against their demand.
At least six cops were injured in the attack by fishermen when the law enforcers were enforcing a ban on hilsa catching in the Meghna River in Chandpur on Monday night.
The government imposed a 22-day ban on catching, selling, hoarding and transporting of hilsa – from October 7 to October 28 this year– to protect safe spawning of the fish during its peak breeding period.

On Monday night, a team led by executive magistrates Sharmin Akhter and Zahid Hasan, went to Bishnapur union's Safarmali area in Sadar upazila to conduct the drive when a group of fishermen hurled brickbats at them, OC Quamruzzaman said.
"Hasan Mia, 26, of river police was critically injured during the attack. He was taken to Chandpur General Hospital. Later, Hasan was referred to Central Police Hospital in Dhaka," he added. "Several other policemen were injured in this attack and received primary treatment at Chandpur General Hospital."
On the other hand, a team of Alu Bazar police outpost conducted a drive to curb fishing during the ban period in Nilkamol area of the Meghan River on Monday afternoon.
Sensing the presence of the police, some fishermen on board an engine-run trawler hit the police speedboat, which caused four fishermen to fall in the river and the loss of a shotgun of one Bashar.
Md Jahirul Islam, in-charge of the police outpost, said divers from the fire service are yet to recover the gun from the river after conducting drives on Monday night and entire Tuesday. The four fishermen were rescued.
Md Kamruzzaman, superintendent of police of Chandpur Zone River Police, said they are vigilant to save mother Hilsas and none will be spared in connection with the attack on cops.
Banned fishing nets worth over Tk 9 cr seized in Chandpur
Members of Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) seized banned fishing nets worth around Tk 9 crore from the Raghunathpur area of Chandpur Sadar Upazila on Monday morning.
Acting on a tip-off, a special operation was conducted by BCG Station Chandpur led by Station Commander Lt. B M Tanjimul Islam in the area around 9:30am on Monday, said Lt. Mashhad Uddin Nahian, a media officer at the BCG Dhaka Zone.
During the raid, the law enforcers seized around 2.5 million meters of new current nets from three Easy-bikes worth Tk 9,03,00,000 in the area.

The seized nets were later burnt in the presence of Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer and Station Commander Chandpur on the Coast Guard office premises, the media officer added.
Couple meets tragic end in Chandpur road crush
A man and his eight-month pregnant wife were killed in a collision between a speeding truck and a CNG-run-auto rickshaw in Kachua upazila of the district on Saturday.
The deceased were identified as Waz Uddin, 30, and his wife Sabikun Nahar, 24 - residents of Baraiara village under Sarchar union in the upazila.
Ibrahim Khalil, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kachua police station, said the accident occurred around 2pm when the goods-laden speeding truck rammed into the auto rickshaw carrying the couple from the opposite direction, leaving the duo critically injured.
They were rushed to Upazila Health Complex where on-duty physicians declared them dead on arrival, he said.

The couple met the tragic end on their way to home after a doctor’s visit on the Kachua-Sachar-Dhaka road in Hatmuda area, the OC said.
Though the truck could be seized, its drier managed to flee the spot, the police officer said.
Sachar Union Parishad Chairman Ali Akkas Molla said the number of such accident on the busy road is increasing alarmingly claiming lives and properties day bay day.
Immediate measures should be taken to lessen such accidents, he added.
4 to die for killing girl after rape in Chandpur
A Chandpur tribunal on Tuesday sentenced four people to death in a case over killing a 20-year-old girl after gang rape in 2013.
The condemned convicts are Zia, 32, Kamal 36, Abul Bashar, 48 and Mahmuda Begum, 38 of Rasulpur village. Of them Mahmuda was tried in absentia.
Woman and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Jannatul Ferdous Chowdhury handed down the punishment.

According to the prosecution, on May 21, 2013, police recovered the body of Rahima, daughter of Shafiul Miaji, from a maize filed in Matlab South upazila of the district.
During investigation, police came to know that Mahmuda had an enmity with Rahima over money.
As per Mahmud’s plan , the other convicts took Rahima to the maize filed where they killed her after rape.
Rahima’s father lodged a complaint with Matlab South Police.
Chandpur: 2 suffocate to death working inside septic tank
Two men suffocated to death after they were allegedly working inside a septic tank without any protective gear at an under-construction building in Matlab Dakshin upazila in Chandpur Friday.
The deceased were identified as Liton, 36, and Rasel, 26, from Putia village of the upazila.
They entered the septic tank at Baroigaon village around 9am.

After a while, the owner of the house found them unconscious inside the tank and informed the police, Md Mohiuddin Mia, officer-in-charge of Matlab Dakshin Police Station, told UNB.
Later fire service officials reached the spot, pulled the men out of the tank and rushed them to a hospital, where they were declared brought dead, Asaduzzaman, station officer of Matlab Fire Service and Civil Defence Station, said.
The bodies were sent to Matlab Dakshin Upazila Health Complex for autopsies, Mohiuddin said.
"Preliminary probe suggests that the duo inhaled poisonous gases and were asphyxiated to death. But we are waiting for detailed autopsy reports," he added.
Madrasa girl gang raped in Chandpur, 1 held
A 14-year-old madrasa girl has allegedly been raped by three men after abduction in Kachua upazila of Chandpur, said police.
The crime took place Friday afternoon at an abandoned building near Khidda Bazar of the upazila.
Md Mohiuddin, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kachua police station, said three rapists abducted the girl from a CNG-run auto rickshaw on her way to home and violated her in turns after taking her to the abandoned building, leaving her unconscious.

Later, she informed police about the incident and lodged a complaint against the three at the police station, the OC added.
Following her statement, police arrested accused Russel Mia, 26, on Sunday and produced him before the court Monday morning, said Moni Rani Bhoumik, sub-inspector (SI) of Kachua police station.
Efforts are on to arrest the two other accused- Mohammad Ullah, 35, and Md Hasan, 25, the SI added.
Besides, the rape survivor’s medical tests were also done this morning.
Two kids drown in Chandpur
Two children drowned at Subidpur and Toragor villages in Hajiganj upazila on Sunday.In Subidpur, a seven-year-old girl drowned in a pond while plucking water lily at Sibidpur Uttar Para in the upazila.The deceased was identified as Sumaiya Akter, daughter of Rumon of the area.
