Tenth-grader attacked for protesting eve-teasing; three arrested in Chandpur
A class ten girl reportedly sustained severe injuries in an attack by goons for protesting against eve-teasing on her way to school in Haimchar upazila of the district Tuesday.
Police arrested three goons including the prime accused within a few hours of the incident.

The arrestees were identified as prime accused Habib Talukdar, 20, Shipon, 20, and Al Amin, 20. They were residents of Mohjampur area in Uttar Algir union of the upazila.
Quoting the victim and her school teachers, Ashraf Uddin, officer-in-charge (OC) of Haimchar police station, said the prime accused and his cohorts teased her and threw abusive words at her on her way to school from home at Chhoiyal intersection around 10 am.
When she protested, in a fit of rage, the goons thrashed her and hit with brick on head leaving her critically injured, said the OC.
Hearing screams, locals rushed to the spot and rescued her from the clutches of the goons, he said, adding that the victim is now undergoing treatment at Upazila Health Complex.
Police arrested three culprits so far from different areas of the upazila in the afternoon, the police officer said, adding legal action against the detainees was underway as of filing this report.
One killed, three injured in Chandpur wall collapse
A 65-year-old worker was killed and three others were injured in a wall collapse at Baghadite in Chandpur sadar Sunday morning.
The deceased was identified as Shahjahan Gazi while the injured were Hamid Gazi, 32, Lition Gazi, 50, and Kamal Befari, 45. All of them were residents of the Baghadite.

Sources said a brick-made wall fell on them while they were digging mud for the renovation of Hajji Bari Jame Masjid in Baghadite area at around 10:00am.
Locals rescued them and rushed to Chandpur sadar hospital where doctors declared Shahjahan Gazi dead, said Dr Sujauddola Rubel, resident medical officer of the hospital.
50 spotted doves poisoned to death in Chandpur; Probe on
Around 50 spotted doves have been poisoned to death at an Aman paddy field at Charpuramukhi village under Haimchar upazila of Chandpur.
On information, Haimchar upazila agriculture officer Debbrato Sarkar visited the spot Wednesday afternoon.
Debbrato Sarkar told UNB that these ill-fated doves used to come to the Aman paddy seedbed in search of food. Some locals killed the doves by giving poison.

“It is inhumane. Killing birds is a crime and a threat to the environment. I have asked the locals not to kill birds like dove,” he said.
An investigation is underway to find out the culprits and bring them to the book, added the agriculture officer.
Earlier on February 25, more than a hundred of doves were poisoned to death in the same upazila.
Farmer Swapan Dewan was fined Tk 2,000 for committing the crime, said Debbrato Sarkar.

The spotted dove is a small and somewhat long-tailed pigeon that is a common resident breeding bird across its native range on the Indian subcontinent and in Southeast Asia including Bangladesh.
Onrush of upstream water threatens Chandpur town protection embankment
The Chandpur town protection embankment has become vulnerable due to onrush of water from upstream.
Some vulnerable spots in the embankment have already been spotted by Water Development Board (WDB) officials.
They are dumping cement blocks and sand-filled geo bags to prevent the cracks in the embankment.
The vulnerable spots in the embankment are- Puranbazar and Notunbazar points, Tilabari in Jamuna Road (cracks developed twice within just two or three months), Pilot House, Dolmandir area, Harishava, Ronagoyal, South Sriramdi and adjacent areas.

Executive Engineer of WDB Chandpur office Rifat Jamil told UNB that he visited the Dolmandir spot.
“A total of 13,000 geo bags and 10,000 cement blocks have been dumped in a five-kilometer area. Another 13,000 geo bags and 13,000 cement blocks have been kept available beside the embankment to use during any emergency,” said the official.
“Chandpur district town is situated on the confluence of three rivers- the Meghna, the Padma and the Dakatiya. As a result, the town always remains under threat of river erosion during monsoon,” he said.
Chandpur: Medical technologist commits suicide
A 26-year-old Medical Technologist (Lab) of Matlab Uttar Upazila Health Complex in Chandpur allegedly committed suicide on Saturday morning, police said.
The deceased was identified as Monira Kamal, wife of Ziarul Islam Nader of Kachari Bazar area of Nilphamari district. Monira, a mother of a son, used to live with her father and aunt at the health complex's staff quarters.

She joined as a Medical Technologist on 14 February 2022.
The deceased’s father Momin Uddin Montu said Monira had been suffering from mental problems for some time.
“On Friday night, she went to sleep. In the morning, after not seeing her, I searched a lot and found the body hanging on the 3rd floor of the quarters and informed police,” Montu added.

On information, police recovered the body and sent it to District Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy, said Shahjahan Kamal, officer-in-charge of Matlab Uttar police station.
Two kids drown in Chandpur
Two minors drowned in a pond near their home in the village of Munsirhat Dighaldi in Matlab Dakshin upazila of Chandpur district on Thursday noon.
The deceased were identified as Minhaj, 3, son of Mizan Mridha, and Hanjala, son of Muktar Mijhi of the same age.
Neighbour Al Amin said Minhaj and Hanjala were playing near the pond adjacent to their house, when at one stage they fell into the pond.
Later, family members found their lifeless bodies floating on the surface of the pond and took them to Chandpur government general hospital, where doctors declared them officially dead, said Dr Animash Chakroborty.

Truck ploughs into Chandpur highway eatery, 1 killed
A 52-year-old man was killed as a truck ploughed into an eatery along the Chandpur-Cumilla highway on Wednesday afternoon, police said.
The deceased was identified as Md Khorshed Alam, a daily wager and a resident of Cumilla’s Nangalcourt upazila.

The accident occurred around 2pm in Chandpur’s Shahrashti upazila when the driver of the Cumilla-bound freight truck lost control of the vehicle during heavy showers.
"Khorshed was standing in front of the hotel. He was crushed to death under the wheels of the speeding truck," said Md Abdul Mannan, officer-in-charge of Shahrashti Model Police Station.

The body was later handed over to his family, the OC said.
2 primary teacher candidates killed in Chandpur road crash
Two people were killed on Friday on their way to take part in recruitment exam for assistant teachers of primary schools in a collision between a CNG-run auto rickshaw and a truck in Sadar upazila of Chandpur, police said.
Two others were injured in the accident, said police.
The deceased were identified as Fatema Alam, 24, and Md Abdullah, 25, of Hajiganj upazila of the district.
The accident occurred around 9:30 am when a Chandpur bound auto rickshaw collided with a speeding sand-laden truck coming from opposite direction on the Chandpur-Cumilla regional road of the upazila, leaving Fatema dead on spot and other occupants of the auto rickshaw injured.

Later, the injured were rushed to Chandpur Govt General Hospital where the doctor declared Abdullah dead on arrival, Md Abdur Rashid, officer-in-charge (OC) of Chandpur Model police station.
Both vehicles were seized. Both the drivers fled the scene immediately, said the OC.
A case will be filed in this regard, he added.
2 siblings die after ‘inhaling toxic gas’ in Chandpur
Two siblings died reportedly after inhaling toxic gas accumulated inside a septic tank of an under-construction building at Hajiganj Bazar in Haziganj upazila of Chandpur district on Tuesday.
The deceased were identified as Rabbani, 38 and Mohon, 22- two sons of Sajeman Ali of Nachole upazila in Chapainawabganj district.

Zobair Syed, officer-in-charge of Hajiganj Police Station, said the two brothers went to clean a septic tank in an under-construction building in the area around 9:30 am.
Mohon first climbed down the septic tank. When no response came from Mohon after a long time, Rabbani then got into the septic tank.
As he didn’t come out, local people informed the matter to local Fire Service men who rescued them.

Later, they were taken to Hajiganj Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared them dead.
Seeing elder brother’s body, man dies in Chandpur
A 24-year-old man died soon after he learned about death of his elder brother in a lightning strike at Uttar Kachiyara area in Faridganj of Chandpur on Wednesday morning.
The elder brother Tariqul Islam Rubel, 26, was struck by lightning inside his fish farm, locals said.

His younger brother Sohel along with locals went to the spot to rescue Rubel. However, seeing his elder brother's body, Sohel suddenly collapsed on the ground.
Later, the two were rushed to Faridganj Health Complex where the on-duty doctor declared the siblings dead around 9am, said Md Mozammel Hossain, physician of the health complex.
Mohammad Shahid Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Faridganj police station, said the bodies were handed over to police.

Sohel’s body was handed over to his family as the local people's representative and his relatives confirmed his death as natural, he said.
However, Rubel’s body was sent to Chandpur Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy, the OC added.
