Former bureaucrat Md Nurul Amin made new BERC chairman
Former senior secretary Md Nurul Amin has been appointed as the chairman of Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC).
Prior to the new position, the former bureaucrat, who hailed from Chandpur district, served as chairman of state-owned Karmasangshan Bank.
Nurul Amin last served the Planning Ministry as its senior secretary and retired from the job in April 2022.
A gazette notification, issued by the Energy and Mineral Resources division today(Tuesday), said Nurul Amin will serve the BERC for next three years from the date of his joining under a contractual agreement.
Earlier, the government had appointed three new members to the BERC. They are - Dr Md Helal Uddin, Abul Khayer Md Aminur Rahman and Dr Muhammad Yamin Chowdhury.
All of three appointees are retired bureaucrats.
The Chairman post of the regulatory authority as the post remained vacant since January 30 this year after completion of the tenure of BERC Chairman Md. Abdul Jalil.
BERC member Md. Kamruzzaman was serving as acting chairman of the regulatory body following retirement of Abdul Jalil.
Muniruzzaman elected Chairman of GMACCC
Maj Gen (Retd) ANM Muniruzzaman has been elected Chairman of the Global Military Advisory Council on Climate Change (GMACCC).
He was elected for a three-year term in its general meeting held recently.
Muniruzzaman is a founding member of GMACCC and has worked on climate security issues for many years.
He has represented GMACCC in major climate negotiations and conferences around the world.
GMACCC was created in 2009 In response to growing threats to global security and peace posed by climate change.
He is also the President of Bangladesh Institute of Peace and Security Studies (BIPSS).
Pran-RFL chairman scores Bangladesh C-Suite award
Ahsan Khan Chowdhury, chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of Pran-RFL Group, has been honoured with the " Entrepreneur of the Year" award for his contribution to the corporate sector. Bangladesh Brand Forum (BBF) initiated the first Bangladesh C-Suite Awards 2022 to recognise and celebrate the achievements of Bangladeshi business leaders.Read: Nagad CBO scoops up Bangladesh C-Suite award The Bangladesh C-Suite Awards were given in 16 categories to 16 top executives of Bangladesh at a hotel in Dhaka recently."We are honoured to receive the Bangladesh C-Suite award. Arrest warrant issued against City Group chairman
A Chattogram court Thursday issued an arrest warrant against Fazlur Rahman, chair of City Group, in a case filed in 2019 by the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI).
Fourth Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate Shariful Islam gave the order after framing charges in the case, Advocate Ashraf Khandaker, public prosecutor for the BSTI, told UNB.
BSTI filed the case on October 20, 2019, claiming the Vitamin A content in City Group's edible oil brand "Teer" fell short of what the company advertised.
The BSTI examines the quality of edible oils refined and marketed in Bangladesh in line with the Vitamin A Enrichment in Edible Oil Act 2013.
According to the Vitamin A Enrichment Act 2013, no edible oil can be sold, stored, supplied, marketed, or commercialised without vitamin A enrichment.

Ashraf said after the case was filed, Fazlur was summoned by the court but he failed to appear.
"The City Group chair was later granted bail by the High Court. He used to extend the time from the lower court without appearing before the court physically. As he did not appear before the court, the magistrate issued the arrest warrant in the case," he added.
No one to look into public sufferings: GM Quader
Jatiya Party Chairman GM Qudaer on Monday alleged that though common people are going through serious hardships due to the soaring prices of all essentials, there is no one to look into their sufferings.
“The people of the country are not having a good time. Ordinary people have become worried due to the growing commodity prices. They’re struggling to make ends meet due to the price hike,” he said.
GM Quader, also the deputy opposition leader in parliament, made the remarks, while exchanging views with the union leaders of the private employees working in government colleges and madrasas at the Jatiya Party chairman's Banani office.

He said there has been anarchy in every sector as the government has irrationally raised the fuel prices. “Transportation costs have risen due to hikes in diesel and kerosene prices. This is casting an adverse effect on every sector,” the Jatiya Party chief observed.
He said the prices of all essential items and raw materials are skyrocketing gradually because of lack of monitoring by the government. “It seems there’s no one to see the sufferings of ordinary people.”
GM Quader urged the government to take effective steps to check the price hike of essentials and ease the public sufferings.

The Jatiya Party Chairman also called upon the government to accept the justified demands of private employees working in government colleges and madrasas.
Jatiya Party Secretary General Mujibul Haque Chunnu, Presidium Member Mir Abdus Sabur Asud, Joint Secretary General Jasim Uddin Bhuiyan, Organising Secretary Joynal Abedin and Office Secretary MA Razzak Khan were, among others, present at the programme.
Saurav Ganguly appointed ICC cricket panel chief
India's all-powerful cricket board chief Sourav Ganguly has been appointed as the chairman of the ICC Cricket Committee.
Sourav, affectionately known as 'Dada', replaces his former playmate Anil Kumble, who served three separate three-year terms since 2012. Both are former skippers of the national cricket team.

Major General Ziaur Rahman new Chairman of BEPZA
Major General Abul Kalam Mohammad Ziaur Rahman took over as the Chairman of Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA) on Sunday. He replaced Major General Md Nazrul Islam. Before joining BEPZA, Ziaur Rahman was General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 7 Infantry Division. Prior to that, he served as the Defence Adviser to the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi, India. His military career spanned over command, staff and instructional appointments. He served as Logistics Staff Officer and also as Operations, Planning & Intelligence Staff Officer at Brigade, Army Training & Doctrine Command and Army Headquarters.

Ziaur Rahman also served in the prestigious appointment of ‘Directing Staff’ at the Defence Services Command and Staff College of Bangladesh and Instructor at Bangladesh Military Academy. In his decorated service life, Major General Ziaur Rahman also served at various capacities at Battalion level.

Imam-turned-entrepreneur arrested for misappropriating Tk 17000-cr
Chairman of Ehsan Group Ragib Hasan and an associate were arrested on Friday by Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) on charges of misappropriating Tk 17,000 crore.
He was arrested from the capital’s Topkhana Road on Thursday with Abul Bashar Khan, said a press release from Rab headquarters on Friday.
According to official sources, Ragib, once the Imam of a mosque, joined a Multi-Level-Marketing (MLM) company and set up Ehsan Group of Companies in 2010 based in Pirojpur.

Starting with a real estate company first, he later formed 17 firms under the group’s name.
Many cases were filed against the group on charges of embezzlement of money from thousands of people promising to run the company according to Islamic Shariah law and offering them a high profit.

During the interrogation Ragib confessed collecting Tk 1.1 crore from over one lakh members and clients of the 17 organisations under Ehsan Group. The group had almost 300 employees who also fell victim to its trap as they did not get any salary, the release also said.
Mahbub ur Rahman elected chairman of BBG
Md. Mahbub ur Rahman, CEO of HSBC Bangladesh, has been elected Chairman of the British Business Group (BBG).
The appointment follows the election of a new BBG Board who will guide the Group for the next three years.
Rahman said he is honoured to have been elected Chairman of the BBG.

Rahman was appointed as the CEO of HSBC Bangladesh in April 2020.
He joined HSBC in 2002 and was previously Deputy CEO as well as Head of Wholesale Banking in Bangladesh. Prior to this, he led HSBC’s Commercial Banking business in Malaysia.
An MBA from the Kellogg-HKUST joint programme, he takes a keen interest in the transformation of international trade and supply chains.

He also serves as a member of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Bangladesh Standing Committee on Banking Techniques and Practices.
HSBC are one of the many UK firms operating in Bangladesh. The new Board members of the BBG represent companies in the financial, retail, garment and consultancy sectors who are conducting business successfully in the Bangladesh market.
The British Business Group (BBG) was formed in 2005, originally it operated under the umbrella of the British High Commission (BHC).
Rupganj factory fire: Sajeeb Group chairman, 4 sons, CEO among 8 arrested
Narayanganj police arrested eight people, including the chairman of Sajeeb Group, his four sons and the CEO of the group, on Saturday (July 10, 2021) in connection with the fire in a juice factory belonging to the Group in Rupganj that left 52 people dead.
The arrestees are Md Abul Hashem chairman of the group, his four sons -- Hashem Bin Hashem, Tareq Ibrahim, Tawsib Ibrahim and Tanjim Ibrahim, and its CEO Shahan Sha Azad, DGM Mamunur Rashid and head of admin Salauddin.

Superintendent of Police in the district Md Zaidul Alam told UNB that the arrested eight people will be produced before the district court later in the day.
Earlier, police filed a case with Rupganj police station against the eight people and many unknown others following the massive fire in the factory, he said.

Group CEO Shahan Sha Azad was arrested from the company’s head office in the capital’s Farmgate area, while Chairman Hashem from his Gulshan residence, SP Zaidul Alam said.
The devastating fire that swept through the seven-storey building housing the juice factory of Hashem Foods Ltd at Bhulta Karnagop in Rupganj, Narayanganj broke out around 5 pm on Thursday.

According to the fire service, huge amount of plastic and packaging materials in the building fueled the fire in just a few minutes after it broke out.
They said the blocked door at the factory’s staircase has caused so many deaths that could have been avoided.

It took around 27 hours for 18 firefighting units to douse the fire completely as at some floors huge amounts of inflammable substances were stockpiled.
On Friday noon, after breaking the locked door of the fourth floor, firefighters discovered rows of bodies burnt to ashes.

Firefighters recovered 49 bodies from the floor and sent them to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital’s morgue, which took the death toll to 52 from the tragic incident. None of the 49 bodies could be identified yet as they have completely burnt to black.
Earlier, three deaths from the accident were confirmed by the authorities of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital and US Bangla Medical College and Hospital, Rupganj on Thursday.
