The headmaster of Maskata Government Primary School died of coronavirus at his residence at Maskata village in Fakirhat upazila of Bagerhat early Friday.
Sharankhola paddy farmers struggling with rise in salinity post-Amphan
The farmers of Sharankhola upazila of Bagerhat district have become frustrated with the increased salinity affecting their crop lands since Cyclone Amphan ripped through the country on May 20, leaving a vast tract of land unfit for cultivation.
42 fined in Bagerhat for not wearing masks
Mobile courts here on Sunday fined 42 people in different upazila of Bagerhat for not wearing masks.
Mobile courts led by executive magistrates conducted drives in public transports and markets from morning to night and fined them TK 19,370 , said Md Shahiduzzaman, additional district magistrate.
Earlier on June 5, a total 23 people were fined Tk 24,700 and 42 people TK 21,800 on June 6.
Bangladesh has allowed public transport to move on highways and metropolitan cities on some specific conditions.
Meanwhile, passengers, drivers, helpers were told to maintain three feet physical distance while travelling and everyone was asked to wear mask when they come out of home.
Mobile court fines Tk 36,100 to 39 people for not using mask in Bagerhat
A mobile court fined 39 people Tk 36,100 for not using mask in different parts of the district.
The mobile court led by Additional District Magistrate Mohammad Shahinuzzaman, said the drive was conducted from Wednesday morning till night in different parts of the district including in the public transports.
The drive was conducted to curb coronavirus transmission and it will continue, he said.
Earlier, a mobile court fined Tk 34,300 to 24 people for violating the health guidelines.
The government has asked all to abide by the health guidelines to prevent spread of the deadly virus.
Bangladesh confirmed its first cases on March 8 and the first death on March 18 but it has been seeing a sharp rise in both new cases and deaths in recent weeks.
The country on Wednesday recorded another spike in coronavirus cases when the health authorities announced detection of 2,695 new patients in the last 24 hours.
During this period, 37 patients died of Covid-19, raising the death toll to 746.
Among the total infection, 11,590 people have so far recovered.
Deer rescued in Bagerhat
A deer, rescued from sonatala village in Sharankhola upazila, was released in the Sundarbans on Thursday.
Joynul Abedin, assistant forest conservator of Sharankhola range, said local people caught the deer from the village in the afternoon.
It was a barking deer, a species native to South and Southeast Asia, he said.
It is believed that, the deer aged about five to six years, came to the locality from the Sundarbans through the Bhola river banks.
On information, a forest department team went to the spot and rescued the deer. Later, they released it in Bhola forest camp of the Sundarbans.
Earlier on April 23 and 24, two deer were rescued from Mathbaria upazila of Pirojpur district and those were also released in the Sundarbans.
On May 4, the forest department in a drive rescued 22 deer and arrested three deer poachers from the Sundarbans.
They also recovered 30 kgs of venison, three boats and deer traps from their possession.
Cyclone Amphan: Bagerhat suffers losses worth Tk 400cr
Cycone Amphan, which made landfall in the coastal districts on Wednesday, has caused an estimated loss of Tk 400 crore in Bagerhat alone.
Md Mamunur Rashid, the deputy commissioner, said the administration prepared a list of damage to agriculture, fisheries, houses, roads, electricity, livestock, embankments, bridges and culverts on Friday.
Fishes from many enclosures and ponds in Rampal, Mongla, Bagerhat Sadar, Sharankhola and Kachua areas were washed away by tidal waves.
Humanitarian assistance is being provided to the victims, he added.
Already Tk 15 lakh cash for construction and repair of damaged houses, 500 bundle tin, 300 metric tonnes rice, and cash money have been allotted for victim.
According to the Bagerhat district administration, 4,349 houses were partially damaged and 374 houses were completely damaged. Besides, 75 unions and three municipalities of the district have been affected. The total number of affected people is 5,331.
Although the list of losses has been prepared initially, the work of verifying the complete list is underway, said the DC.

Three poachers held with venison in Bagerhat
Forest Department officials detained three poachers with venison on Monday afternoon in Tiarchar area in Sharankhola upazila.
The arrested are—Abul Kha, 42, and Sanjoy Mistri, 32, of Patharghata upazila in Bagruna, and Asadul Sheikh, 25, of Dacope upazila.
Mohammad Belayet Hossain, divisional forest officer, Sundarban East Zone, said they detained the three poachers in a drive when a group of seven poachers put deer hunting trap in the forest and slaughtered two dears.
The poachers managed to escape while 30kg venison, 700 feet net trap, three trawlers and a boat were seized, he added.
Meanwhile, 22 deer were rescued and released later.
