Case filed against upazila chairman, 6 others over rape and kidnapping of a girl in Khulna
A case was filed against seven people including Dumuria upazila Chairman Gazi Ezaz Ahmed over raping a girl and kidnapping her from hospital premises.
A complaint was lodged with Khulna Woman and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 on Wednesday and Judge Dilruba Sultana asked the Dumuria Police Station to record the complaint as ‘ezhar’, said Mominul Islam, a lawyer.
The other accused of the case were: Gazi Touhiduzzaman, Rudaghara union parishad chairman, Gazi Abdul Haque, Al Amin Gazi, Aktarul Alam, Saddam Gazi and Imran Hossain.
Two college students die in Satkhira road crash
Around 10-15 unidentified people were also made accused in the case.
According to the complaint, Dumuria upazila chairman Ezaz had raped the girl several times, with a “promise to marry her.”
On January 7, Ezaz took the girl to his Shahpur office and raped her. Later, she was driven out from the office, says the complaint.
Later, the girl went to the one-stop crisis centre of Khulna Medical College and Hospital with the help of her cousin.
The accused, Touhiduzzaman, along with 10-15 people showed up in a microbus and picked her up along with her mother from the hospital.

They took the girl and her mother to Sonadanga Police Station and forced them to give a statement that they were not kidnapped, says the complaint.
Police did not take any action in this regard, said the complaint.
Contacted, Sukanta Saha, officer-in-charge of Dumuria Police Station, said no complaint has been lodged yet in this connection.
Assistant teacher suspended over ‘sexual harassment’ in Khulna
Pradyut Kumar Bhattro, an assistant teacher of Khulna Collegiate Girls' School & KCC Women's College, has been suspended over the allegation of sexually harassing a student of class VI.
Prof. Md Touhiduzzaman, principal of the institution, said the decision was made on Wednesday following the order of city mayor Talukdar Abdul Khaleque, also president of the school governing body.
Quoting victim’s mother Nasima Begum, Prof. Touhiduzzaman said Pradyut Kumar molested her daughter when she went to the washroom on Thursday (February 29). Later, she lodged a complaint with the principal on Tuesday.
Initially, the authorities tried to sweep the incident under the carpet but when parents got enraged, accused teacher Pradyut Bhattro asked to show cause on Monday.
Later, a four-member probe body was formed to investigate the incident.
The probe body led by Rafia Akhtar, another teacher of the school, was asked to submit a report within seven days.
According to the students and parents, the accused teacher tried to molest the student when she went to the bathroom last Thursday. The teacher left the spot when two students came forward after seeing the matter. Since then, the accused has remained absent from duty.
S Alam Group’s sugar refinery factory fire not doused in 48 hrs
The fire at the S Alam Group-owned sugar refinery factory in Chattogram couldn’t be brought under control fully for more than 48 hours now.
The fire service says it may take two to three more days to extinguish the fire.
Chattogram Fire Service Deputy Assistant Director Abdullah Harun Pasha said although the fire is not likely to spread outside, it will take more time to fully control it.
“Sugar raw materials are stored all over the area. It is not possible to extinguish the fire from below. At the moment, there is no alternative to sprinkling water from above. Ten units of fire service are working to control the fire,” he said.
Meanwhile, members of the army, navy and air force are working with the fire service to extinguish the fire.
Earlier on Monday (March 4th), a fire broke out around 4 pm in the warehouse of this sugar mill.
Mohammad Akhter Hossain, general manager (corporate) of S Alam Group, said there are five warehouses there. Each warehouse has a capacity of 60,000 metric tons.
The factory was still open at the time of the fire. About 500 workers work in the factory
Two college students die in Satkhira road crash
Two college students died and another student was injured as a motorbike carrying them crashed into a pillar of an under-construction bridge in Assasuni upazila of Satkhira district on Wednesday morning.
The deceased were identified as Nayan Ghosh, 19, son of Niranjan Ghosh of Amania villagein Kaliganj upazila and William Ghosh, 18, son of Jagannath Ghosh of the same village and the injured was Colonel Ghosh, 19, son of Tarak Ghosh of the same area. All of them were HSC second year students of Kaliganj College.
According to police and locals, three friends- Nayan Ghosh, William Ghosh and Colonel Ghosh joined a programme at Jagannath Gurudev temple in Jethua Jalalpur in Tala upazila on Tuesday evening.
On Wednesday morning when they were returning home from the religious event the motorbike carrying them crashed into under-construction Dhapua bridge on the Dargahpur Kadakati road and plunged into a waterbody , leaving Nayan Ghosh and William Ghosh dead on the spot and Colonel Ghosh injured.

Locals allege that the contractor of the under-construction bridge has kept the work half-done, making the road risky for movement of people.
Assasuni Fire Service Station Officer (Acting) Belal Hossain said they handed over the bodies and the motorcycle to police.
Assasuni Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Biswajit Kumar Adhikari said police recovered the bodies and sent those to Satkhira Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
The injured was admitted to the Assasuni Upazila Health Complex, said the OC.
Preparations are underway to take legal action after investigating the incident, he added.
Shooting student in classroom: Sirajganj medical college lecturer suspended
Dr Raihan Sharif, a lecturer of the Community Medicine department at Shaheed M Mansur Ali Medical College and Hospital in Sirajganj has been suspended over shooting a student inside a classroom.
The medical college authorities took the decision on Wednesday following the directives of the Directorate General of Medical Education (DGME), Prof Dr Amirul Hossain, principal of the college, told UNB.
Earlier, on Tuesday a Sirajganj court sent Dr Raihan to jail.

In response to the grave incident, students of Shaheed M Mansur Ali Medical College and Hospital organised a protest on the Sirajganj-Bogura-4 lane highway, demanding the immediate dismissal and severe punishment of Dr. Raihan. Their demands extend to the Prime Minister’s intervention for the revocation of the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC) registration and the permanent removal of the accused from his teaching position. The students eventually suspended their protest after receiving assurances from the DGHS investigative team.
Arafat Amin Tomal, 23, a third-year student and victim of the shooting, is currently receiving medical care. The incident took place on Monday afternoon during a class, resulting in Tomal’s hospitalisation. Dr. Raihan was arrested at the scene, and his firearm was confiscated by the police.
Md Sirajul Islam, the officer-in-charge of the local police station, revealed that Dr. Raihan Sharif was known for carrying weapons and knives, which he would openly display during lectures. Sharif reportedly threatened students with these weapons whenever they objected to their presence in the classroom.

2 dead as pick-up van hits motorbikes in Sylhet
Three people died and four others were injured after a pickup van rammed into two motorcycles on the Sylhet-Tamabil highway in Jaintapur upazila of Sylhet on Tuesday night.
The deceased were identified as Shihab, 22, son of Alauddin, Foysal Reza, 19, son of Liakat Ali, and Pavel, 18, son of businessman Abdul Hannan. All of them were residents of Jaintapur upazila.
The injured were taken to Jaintapur Upazila Health Complex, where the doctors declared two of them dead.
Cop among 3 dead in Sylhet, Habiganj road accidents
Another deceased, Pavel, died around 1:30 am early Wednesday after he was transferred to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College.
The bodies of the deceased have been handed over to their relatives after the post-mortem, said Tajul Islam, officer-in-charge of Jaintapur Model Police Station.

Vehicular movement on Dhaka-Chattagram highway remained suspended for one and half hours on Tuesday as local people put up barricades on the highway at Dari Baushia in Gazaria upazila demanding gas supply.
Local people took to the street on Dhaka-Chattagram highway at Dari Baushia as the Titas gas authorities came in the area around 12:30 pm to disconnect illegal gas supply.
A nine-kilometer long tailback was created on both sides of the highway following the demonstration, causing immense suffering to the commuters.

Fire at S Alam Group’s sugar refinery factory not doused in 24 hrs
The fire at the S Alam Group-owned sugar refinery factory in Chattogram could not be doused even after 24 hours.
As the raw materials of sugar are flammable, it was not possible to completely extinguish the fire, the fire service authorities said.

Fire service officials estimate that it may take two to three days to douse the blaze.
They said the fire was brought under control on Monday midnight. But from Tuesday morning, the fire inside the sugar mill started burning again.
Deputy Director of Chattogram Fire Service Abdur Razzak said the fire was burning inside the godown at a temperature of 1200 to 1500 degrees Celsius. Fire service personnel are not able to enter the factory because the temperature is high.
Earlier on Monday ,the fire broke out in the warehouse of this sugar mill around 4pm. On information, two units of fire service went to the spot and later five more units joined them to control the fire. However, seven more units were added as the fire was not under control.
Meanwhile, members of the army, navy and air force worked with 14 units of fire service to extinguish the fire. Seven firefighting units are currently operating there.

Victim's father Abdullah Al Amin, a resident of Dhamachapa village in Dhunat upazila, filed a case with Sadar Police Station at 12am on Monday and Dr Raihan was shown arrested in the case.
Arafat Ashik Tomal, 23, a 3rd year student of the medical college and a resident of Dhansiri Nataipara area of Bogra district town, was admitted to the hospital after he was shot and wounded by the teacher in the classroom on Monday afternoon.

Police arrested Dr Raishan from the spot and seized his gun.
Quoting Tamal’s classmates officer-in-charge of sadar police station Md Sirajul Islam said Dr Raihan Sharif used to carry weapons and knives in his bag and deliver lecture keeping those on the table.
He used to threaten students when they asked him not to bring the weapons in the classroom.
During an exam on Monday, he scolded Tamal first and then opened fire, leaving him injured.
In primary investigation, it was proved that the gun he used was illegal and then another case was filed against the teacher under the Arms Act.
At least 18 houses, 2 cattle burnt to ash in another Ctg fire
The Health Ministry has formed a three-member committee, led by Additional Director General (Administration) of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Prof Dr. Bayazid Khurshid Riaz to investigate the incident.
The principal of the college, Prof Dr Amirul Hossain Chowdhury, did not receive phone calls despite repeated bid for his comment.
