Mitu murder: accused Bhola confesses to supplying firearms
Ehteshamul Haque Bhola, an accused in ex-police superintendent Babul Akter's wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu murder case, has confessed to supplying firearms used in the killing before a Chattogram court.
Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate Shafi Uddin recorded his confessional statement under section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) on Saturday afternoon, said Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) and Chattogram Superintendent of Police Naima Sultana on Saturday night.
However, SP Naima Sultana did not say anything about what Bhola said in her statement. She said Bhola was sent to jail after recording of his statement.

Santosh Chakma, the investigative officer in the case and PBI Inspector (Chattogram Metro Zone) said, Bhola was arrested from Benapole on Thursday while trying to flee the country without surrendering to a lower court and brought to Chattogram on Friday.
Bhola was earlier arrested on June 27 in 2016 and jailed for several days. According to Bhola's confessional statement at that time, the firearms used in Mitu's murder was recovered from the custody of Bhola's associate Monir. Later, Bhola was made accused in Mitu murder case and arm case.
However, the High Court granted him four weeks' bail on September 15.
He recently applied for anticipatory bail before the High Court after a re-arrest warrant was issued against him, but the HC ordered Bhola to surrender to a lower court.
On June 5, 2016, unidentified assailants gunned down Babul's wife Mitu at the port city's GEC intersection while she was going to drop her son for a bus of Chittagong Cantonment Public School and College.

Soon after the crime, a murder case was filed at Panchlaish Police Station against three unidentified men, following a complaint by Babul.
On May 12 this year, PBI submitted its final report in the case.
He is currently behind the bars over a murder case filed by Mitu’s father.
Munia's death: Bashundhara MD among 8 sued over ‘rape, murder’
A rape and murder case was filed on Monday against Bashundhara Group Managing Director Sayem Sobhan Anvir and seven others over the death of college student Mosarat Jahan Munia in her Gulshan apartment in April this year.
The seven other accused are: Bashundhara Group's Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan Shah Alam, Shah Alam's wife Afroza Begum; Anvir's wife Sabrina Sayem; Faria Mahbub Piyasha; Saifa Rahman Mim; landlord of the flat where the victim was staying, Ibrahim Ahmed Ripon and his wife Sharmim Akhter.
Munia's sister Nusrat Jahan Tania filed the case with Dhaka's 8th Tribunal for Prevention of Women and Children's Repression.

Judge Mafroza Parvin recorded the statement of the complainant. After the hearing, the judge directed the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to submit a report on it within seven working days.
Earlier on August 19, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury relieved Anvir of the charge of incitement to suicide of the college student.
On July 19, the investigating officer of the case, Gulshan Police Station officer-in-charge Abul Hasan, submitted a final report to the court giving a clean chit to Anvir.
Anvir was not found culpable in the suicide incitement case of Munia in the final report submitted by the investigating officer and asked for his name to be dropped.

On April 26, police recovered the hanging body of Munia from the flat in Gulshan in the night. Munia's elder sister Nusrat Jahan Tania filed a case against Anvir that night accusing him of incitement to suicide.
According to Tania, her sister Munia was in a relationship with Anvir who regularly visited her at the Gulshan apartment.
Mitu murder case: Court bars 3 accused from leaving Bangladesh
A court in Chattogram has imposed a travel ban on three persons wanted in connection with the murder of former police superintendent Babul Akter's wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu.
Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate Mehnaz Rahman gave the order on Monday in the wake of a plea by the investigating officer, inspector Santosh Kumar Chakma of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI).

The three absconding accused are Kamrul Islam Shikder alias Musa, Ehteshamul Haque Bhola and Khairul Islam alias Kalu.
Chittagong Metropolitan Police's assistant commissioner (prosecution) Kazi Shahabuddin Ahmed said the court's order will soon be sent to all ports across the country.
Inspector Santosh said that the petition was filed in the court to prevent the three fugitives from flying abroad amid the ongoing drive to arrest them for solving the murder case.
From the footage of CCTV cameras, investigators have already confirmed that Musa and Kalu were directly involved in the killing while Bhola had supplied the gun used in the crime.

However, Panna Akter, wife of Musa, told a court that her husband was arrested by the police immediately after the murder.
Bhola, on the other hand, was earlier arrested by police, but has been absconding since his release on bail. Kalu has been on the run since the murder, said the PBI.

On May 12 this year, PBI submitted its final report in the case, prima facie holding Babul guilty of plotting the murder. Babul was held that day only, following a complaint by Mitu's father.
After being in police custody for five days, Babul was remanded in judicial custody by a court. He has been lodged in Feni district jail since May 17.
Babul among 8 sued in Mitu murder
A case was filed against eight people, including former superintendent of police Babul Akter, in connection with the death of his wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu, who was killed in broad daylight in 2016.
Mitu’s father Mosharraf Hossain filed the case with Panchlaish Police Station on Wednesday noon, said officer-in-charge of the police station Abul Kashem Bhuiyan.
While talking to the reporters, Mosharraf, said: “I said earlier that Babul has an involvement in my daughter’s murder and now I came here to file a case against him.”

Santosh Kumar Chakma, the investigating officer of the case, said Babul himself came to the PBI office in Mansurabad on Tuesday afternoon to check the progress of the murder case.

Soon after the crime, Babul had filed a murder case with Panchlaish Police Station against three unidentified men.
Later, police arrested four people, including Abu Nasur Gunu, Shah Zaman alias Robin, Md Anwar and Md Motaleb Mia alias Wasim, from different places in connection with the murder.
Of them, Anwar and Wasim made confessional statements before a magistrate, implicating seven people, including Musa who directly took part in the killing, Mohammad Rashed and Nabi.
During the course of the probe, police had also arrested "arms supplier" Ehteshamul Haque Bhola and his assistant Md Monir and seized a pistol from their possession.
Police had also arrested Musa's elder brother Saidul Shikder Shakur and Shahjahan for providing the motorbike that was used in the murder. But on July 4, 2016, Nabi and Rashed were killed in a gunfight with police in Rangunia.

The case was transferred to the PBI in 2019, after Mitu's father, himself a retired police officer, filed a complaint against the CMP's mishandling of the case.
Mitu's father had, in fact, accused Babul of being directly involved in the murder case. "He (Babul) should be implicated in the murder case... if he's not, we'll go to the court."
Babul had called for questioning a number of times by the PBI since his transfer, but he was detained.

The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has detained Chattogram's former police superintendent Babul Akter after allegedly establishing his involvement in his wife's murder.
PBI officials, however, told UNB on Wednesday that they would formally place Babul under arrest only after getting a fresh complaint from the father of his deceased wife. Based on the complaint, officials said, the PBI will lodge a fresh FIR for murder.
Banoj Kumar Majumdar, Deputy Inspector General of PBI, said, “Mahmuda Khanam Mitu's father Mosharraf Hossain will file a fresh complaint in the case, following which Babul will be formally arrested in the case.”
“As of now, Babul has not been arrested as he is the complainant in the murder case. We have already prepared the final report in the case and will soon submit it in the court,” he said.
Sources told UNB that Babul was detained by PBI sleuths on Tuesday night, after hours of questioning.

Raihan’s death in custody: SI Akbar among six gets charge-sheeted
Police have pressed charges against six people, including the sacked sub-inspector Akbar Hossain Bhuiya of Bandarbazar Police outpost in connection with the death of Raihan Ahmed at the outpost last year.
The investigation team of Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) handed over the chargesheet to Sylhet Court Inspector Pradeep Kumar Das around 11 am on Wednesday, said superintendent of PBI Sylhet Khaleduzzaman.

Court police will submit the chargesheet before a virtual court.
The other chargesheeted accused are sub-inspector Hasan Ali, assistant sub-inspector Ahshque Elahi, constable Harunur Rashid, constable Titu Chandra Das of Bandarbazar Police outpost and Abdullah Al Noman of Companiganj who helped Akbar flee the country.
All the accused policemen are behind bars.
On October 11 last year, Raihan Ahmed, 34, a resident of Akharia in Sylhet city, was beaten to death in police custody.
His wife, Tahmina Akter Tanni, later filed a case with Kotwali Police Station the following day against a number of unidentified people.
Four policemen, including then in-charge of Bandarbazar Police outpost sub-inspector Akbar, were suspended on October 12. The three other policemen were also withdrawn the same day.
Later, the case was transferred to the PBI.
Meanwhile, the Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) formed a committee to probe the death of Raihan. After a primary investigation, it found some policemen guilty of a foul play.
After the autopsy, doctors said there were 111 injury marks on Raihan’s body and two of his nails were pulled out.

On October 22, 2020, former SMP Commissioner Golam Kibria was transferred over widespread criticisms of the role of police in Raihan’s death.
On November 29, last year, Dr Shamsul Islam, the chief of Forensic Department of Osmani Medical College Hospital, said Raihan died due to severe injuries as the viscera report.
On November 18, 2020, a court on sent the suspended sub-inspector of Bandarbazar police outpost, Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan, to jail in connection with Raihan’s death.
Akbar was arrested from Dona frontier area in Kanaighat upazila of Sylhet on November 10, last.
How Raihan died
Raihan (34), a resident of Akharia in Sylhet city, was beaten to death in police custody on October 11, last year.
Raihan had called his mother from an unknown number and said police had taken him to Bandarbazar outpost and demanded Tk 10,000 for his release in the early hours of October 11.
His uncle then rushed to the police outpost with Tk 5,000 but policemen refused to take the money and asked him to return after arranging Tk 10,000.
Raihan’s uncle then again went to Bandarbazar police outpost at 9:30am with the money but he was told that his nephew had fallen sick and taken to a hospital at 6:40am.
As he went to the hospital, he came to know that Raihan was already dead and his body had been sent for post-mortem.

Turning down the allegation of torture, police said Raihan was caught by locals in Kastghar area during a robbery and was lynched.
As the news of Raihan’s death spread around, local people burst into protests and blocked the Sylhet-Sunamganj Highway.
