7 get life term for killing Jubo Dal leader in Laxmipur
A Laxmipur court on Monday sentenced seven people to life term imprisonment in a case filed over killing a local Jubo Dal leader at Dattapara union in sadar upazila in 2011.
District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Rahibul Islam passed the order acquitting one more accused of from the charges.
The lifers are Md Aziz, former UP member of Dattapara Union, his son Md Sabuj, Billal Hossain Biplab, Md Ibrahim, Md Manik, Ismail Hossain and Abul Kashem. Ismail and Abul Kashem were present during the hearing while the other convicts remained absconding.

The convicts were fined Tk 10,000 each, in default, to suffer one year more rigorous imprisonment.
According to case statement, on June 4, 2011, Anwar Hossain, president of union unit of Jubo Dal, was sitting in his brother’s election campaign office at Dattapara Bazar when some miscreants attacked the office and shot him, leaving Anwar dead the spot.

A murder case was filed at sadar police station the following day against 25 named people and 12 unnamed people following a complaint lodged by Anwar’s brother Md Ashek-E-Elahi.
On January 10, 2015, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police submitted the final investigation report at the court.

A Dhaka court on Sunday sentenced 13 people to death in a case over the murder of a local Awami League leader in 2016.
The court also sentenced eight other accused to life imprisonment.
Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 Judge Abu Jafar Kamruzzaman pronounced the judgment.

The condemned convicts are Basu Miah, Kabir Miah, Mokhles, Sachhu Miah, Jahangir Miah,Shahibur Rahman Shukki, Liakat Ali, Yunus Miah, Rahmat Ullah alias Fariaj Miah, Shithil Ahmed alias Fahim Ahmed, Saiful, Pavel and Ali Miah.
Among them, Fariaj, Shithil, Saiful, Pavel and Ali Miah were tried in absentia.
The lifers are Nurul Islam, Habibur Rahman, Russel, Maju Miah, Golap Miah, Sohel Miah, Shajahan and Borhan alias Ruhan. They were fined Tk 50,000 each, in default, to suffer one year more rigorous imprisonment.
According to the case statement, on Nov 14, 2016, Zohirul Haque , a businessman and Natai Dakkhin Ward-5 Awami League (AL) general secretary, was returning home in Poyag from Paurtala bus stand in a CNG-run auto-rickshaw.

The convicts including Basu Mia, Habibur Rahman, Shahibur Rahman alias Shukki, Kabir Mia, Sachchu Mia, Mokhlech Mia, Ruhan alias Borhan, Shithil Ahmed alias Fahim Ahmed, Rahmat Ullah Fariyaz attacked Zohirul Haque on the way and stabbed him mercilessly
Locals caught two of them- Shithil and Fariyaz- and handed over to police.
Zahirul Haque died in the evening while undergoing treatment at a hospital.
Kabir Hossain, younger brother of the deceased, filed a murder case at Brahmanbaria Sadar Police Station in this regard.
The investigation officer of the case submitted a chargesheet against 21 accused.
One gets death penalty, 3 life term for murder in Narail
A Narail court on Sunday sentenced a man to death and three others to life imprisonment for killing a man over land dispute in 2014.
The condemned convict is Alamgir Bhuiyan, 50, while the lifers are- Alamgir’s father Sayen Uddin Bhuiyan, his brothers Habibur Rahman Bhuiyan, 55, and Jungu Bhuiyan of Kalinagar village of Narail.

District and Sessions Judge Munshi Md Moshiar Rahman handed down the verdict. The court also fined Alamgir Tk 50,000.
All the accused except Jangu Bhuiyan were present on the dock when the verdict was announced.

According to the case statement, the convicts had a land-related dispute with Rabiul Islam Bhuiyan, the plaintiff in the case, in Kalinagar village of Naragati in Narail.
Later, an arbitration meeting was held between the two sides on January 18, 2014. On the same day, the plaintiff's brother Firoz Bhuiyan was stabbed to death at Kalingar Bazar area.
8 get life term for killing Jubo League leader in Jhenaidah
A Jhenaidah court on Monday sentenced eight people to life term imprisonment for killing a Jubo League leader in 2010.
The convicts are—Shanti Hossain, Abdul Karim, Lavlu, Abu Zahid Moni, Mizanur Rahman alias Tak Mizan, Ibrahim Khalil alias Idris alias Idu, Mukul and Nasir.

The court also fined them Tk 5,000 each, in default, to suffer six months more igorous imprisonment.
The court also sentenced them to seven years imprisonment each in a case filed under the Explosive Substances Act.
According to the prosecution, the convicts hurled bomb towards Zakir Hossain Mandal Shanti, convener of then Ganna union unit Jubo League, when he was returning home at Kashimnagar village in Sadar upazila by a motorbike on July 7, 2010, leaving him injured.
Later, he succumbed to his injures in a hospital in Dhaka on July 11.

Two separate cases were filed in this connection.
Police submitted chargesheet against eleven people.
After examining records and 19 witnesses, Additional Session Judge Shawkat Hossain handed down the verdict.
Ctg court bomb blast: ‘Boma’ Mizan to die, another gets life term
A tribunal in Chattogram on Sunday sentenced a top leader of the banned militant outfit Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to death and another to life term imprisonment in a case over a bomb attack on Chattogram court premises in 2005.
The condemned convict is Mizan alias Zahidul Islam alias ‘Boma’ Mizan while the lifer is Zabed Iqbal alias Mohamamd, commander of JMB’s Chattogram division.

Judge Abdul Halim of Chattogram Anti-Terrorism Special Tribunal handed down the verdict.
Zabed is now behind bars while ‘Boma’ Mizan was tried in absentia.
On February, 13, 2014, some militants snatched Mizan while he was being taken to Mymensingh from Gazipur’s Kashimpur jail. Since then, he has been on the run.
According to the prosecution, Rajib Barua, a police constable, and Shahabuddin, a justice seeker, were killed as militants hurled a bomb on a police check-post on the court premises on November 29, 2005.
Ten people, including cops and pedestrians, were also injured in the attack.

Later in the day, a case was filed with Kotwali Police Station.
On May 18, 2006, then DB inspector Hla Ching Pru submitted a chargesheet against five people, including JMB chief Abdur Rahman, its second-in-command Siddiqur Rahman alias Bangla bhai, its military commander Ataur Rahman Sunny, ‘Boma’ Mizan and Zabed in the case.
On July 16, 2006, the court framed charges against them.
JMB leaders Abdur Rahman, Bangla Bhai and Sunny were dropped from the case as they were hanged in another case.

Later in 2018, the case was shifted to the Chattogram Anti-Terrorism Special Tribunal.
After examining the records and witnesses, the tribunal handed down the verdict.
2 get life term for killing auto-rickshaw driver in Lakshmipur
A Lakshmipur court on Wednesday sentenced two people to life imprisonment in a case over killing an auto-rickshaw driver in 2013.
The lifers are Mohan, son of Moin Uddin of Birahimpur village in Lakshmipur Sadar, and Tareq, son of Abdullah of Rashidpur village. Mohan was tried in absentia.

According to the case, the convicts killed CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver Mohin at Bijoynagar village in Hamchhadi Union of Lakshmiipur Sadar on July 27 in 2013.
Police recovered the body from roadside.

On following day, a case was filed at Lakshmipur Sadar Police Station in this regard.
Police investigated the case and submitted a chargesheet against Mohan and Tareq on January 13, 2014.
4 get life term for killing Ruet driver
A Rajshahi court on Wednesday sentenced four people to life term jail for killing a bus driver of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (Ruet) in 2018.
Justice Anup Kumar of the Rajshahi Speedy Trial Tribunal pronounced the verdict.
The convicts are- Sabbir Hossain,, Nur Nabi Hossain alias Hridoy, Sohail Rana alias Sohail and SM Sayem.

The court also fined them Tk 10000 each, in default, to suffer one month more RI.
There are two other accused in the case whose verdict is still pending with a separate juvenile court.

Abdus Salam, a bus driver, was stabbed by the accused on the south-east side of Agrani School and College adjacent to RUET on April 23, 2018 while attempting to resolve a local conflict. Later, he died at Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital.
Abdus Salam's son Pias filed a case with Motihar police station against unidentified accused.
It’s settled: Life term means 30 yrs imprisonment
Life imprisonment in Bangladesh means a convict will remain behind bars for 30 years unless specifically mentioned in the verdict that the person is sentenced to imprisonment until natural death.
The 120-page full verdict of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh on the matter was published on its website on Thursday.

“Imprisonment for life is equivalent to imprisonment for 30 years if sections 45 and 53 are read together along with sections 55 and 57 of the Penal Code and 35A of the Code of Criminal Procedure,” it read.
However, the convict will not be entitled to get the benefit of section 35A of the Code of Criminal Procedure, if awarded life imprisonment by the International Crimes Tribunal under International Crimes Tribunals Act, 1973.

A seven-member bench, led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, passed a short verdict on December 1 last year over the matter following a review petition filed by a convict, Ataur Mridha.
Attorney General AM Amin Uddin stood for the state while Advocate Khandakar Mahbub Hossain represented the petitioner.
6 get life imprisonment for Kishoreganj housewife murder
A Kishoreganj court on Monday sentenced six people, including two women, to life imprisonment for killing a housewife in Mogolpara village of Karimganj upazila in 2011.
The convicts were identified as – Lutfu alias Rukon, 30, his cousin Sharif, 22, his uncle Sohrab, 45, his aunt Josna, 40, Muslim, 55, and his wife Nur Nahar, 35.
