Rotary Club of Uttara awards Dr Debapriya , 7 others
Eight prominent personalities have been awarded by the Rotary Club of Uttara, a leading club in Bangladesh, recognising their contributions to society.
Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya, an economist and distinguished fellow of the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), was among the awardees for his role as a policy analyst at home and abroad, said a press release on Saturday.
The other awardees are educationist and former Principal of Dhaka College Professor Jahanara Begum, Debate for Democracy Chairman Hassan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiron, Jamuna TV Special Correspondent Mohsin Ul Hakim, Bangladesh Tennis Federation’s Secretary General ASM Haider Ali, Corporate Sector personality Maruf Satter, Exim Bank’s Managing Director Haider Ali and Agriculturist Professor Md Abdul Wahab.

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi attended the programme as the chief guest.
Islami Bank gets BIBM award for sustainable financial performance
The Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management (BIBM) has awarded the Islami Bank Bangladesh, nine other banks, and five non-bank financial institutions (NBFIs) for their performance in sustainable finance.
The awards were handed over at the 9th annual banking conference of the BIBM in Dhaka Sunday.

Miftah Uddin, senior executive vice-president of the Islami Bank, received the award.
The Islami Bank is a joint venture public limited company engaged in commercial banking business based on Islamic shariah.
Established in 1983 as the first Islamic bank in southeast Asia, it is listed on the Dhaka Stock Exchange and Chittagong Stock Exchange.

Nagad scoops Creative Communication Award 2022
Mobile financial services (MFS) provider Nagad has won the Commward: Excellence in Creative Communication Award 2022, an initiative of the Bangladesh Brand Forum.
The MFS received the honour in five categories for its "innovative and creative" communication campaigns, according to a media statement.
In the 11th edition of the Commward Awards this year, the finest advertising and communication campaigns were recognised in four ranks: bronze, silver, gold, and grand prix under 26 categories. From more than 1,331 nominations, 193 organisations were selected as the winners.
Nagad won silver in public relations, bronze in copywriting, bronze in music or jingle, bronze in film craft, and bronze in art direction categories.
Brand Forum, in cooperation with the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity and The Daily Star, organised the 11th edition of the Commward: Excellence in Creative Communication Award.
The Communication Summit 2022 and Commward: Excellence in Creative Communication Award were held at a city hotel in Dhaka Saturday. Over 700 communication and marketing enthusiasts joined the event.

Indraneel Chattopadhyay, director of brand and creative communication, Muhammad Solaiman, director of public affairs, Kingshuk Haque, director of customer management and experience, and Muhammad Zahidul Islam, head of public communication, of Nagad received the awards.
Indraneel said, "Nagad has captivated the hearts of millions of people in just three years. This is because we speak their language and understand the worth of their hard-earned money."
"We have been able to develop a soul connection with the people of Bangladesh through our services and numerous innovative concepts."
Marina Tabassum scoops Lisbon Lifetime Achievement Award
Bangladeshi architect Marina Tabassum added another feather to her cap – the Lisbon Triennale Millennium bcp Lifetime Achievement Award 2022.
Marina, also a researcher and educator, is the first architect from the global south to receive the honour, adding her name to a list that includes Denise Scott-Brown, Lacaton, Vassal, Kenneth Frampton, Álvaro Siza and Vittorio Gregotti.
The 2021 Soane Medal and 2016 Aga Khan Award for Architecture winner's work shows a "deep sense of commitment to the social and cultural role of architecture, with particular attention paid to building a collective sense of belonging in each new project."

The international jury responsible for choosing the winner of this edition's Lifetime Achievement Award highlighted how Marina's unique practice touches on the spiritual fundamentals of architecture, without losing sight of its responsibilities and potential impact.
The 2022 edition of the Lisbon Triennale has Terra (the Earth) as its theme, a motto that expresses the territory, the city, the landscape, the place where everyone belongs or a continent seen from the sea.
Over the past three decades Marina's practice "has been an inspiring example of work with local communities that can have a positive impact across the planet – even under the most adverse conditions," the jury, composed of Cristina Veríssimo (Portugal), Diogo Burnay (Portugal), N’Goné Fall (Senegal), Yael Reisner (Israel) and Zhang Ke (China), said.

Marina's projects demonstrate both a "strong, clear ethical position and delicate, sophisticated design, being uncompromisingly innovative even with limited resources and budget constraints," it added.
"The architect's bold step forward, transforming architecture's role from a passive-commission model into an active-initiative one, keeps showing us the way towards how architects can challenge the climate crisis and bring about social change in an experimental, respectful and inspiring manner," the jury said.
Marina's notable works include the minimal, sun-dappled Bait Ur Rouf Mosque, opened in 2012, the Independence Monument of Bangladesh, and the Museum of Independence.

The 6th Lisbon Architecture Triennale, curated by Cristina Veríssimo and Diogo Burnay, will be held from September 29 to December 5, 2022, in Portugal's Lisbon.
During Terra's opening days, Marina will be in Lisbon to receive the award, which is an original work of art by Portuguese artist and sculptor Carlos Nogueira.
On September 30, a series of conferences will bring together the winners of all three Lisbon Triennale Millennium Awards – Lifetime Achievement, Début and Universities.

This award is given after an independent selection process that runs through two different stages.
In the first phase, over 30 international leading figures in architecture are invited by the Triennale to nominate up to three names they consider worthy of the award. The resulting list is then given to the jury responsible for the final decision, which includes the general curators of the Triennale 2022 plus three other prominent figures from Senegal, Israel and China.
47 individuals, enterprises get Walton 'Branding Heroes Award'

Nagad's Jhalak scoops up 'Best Emerging Director in Fintech' award
Maruful Islam Jhalak, executive director of mobile financial services (MFS) provider Nagad, has been named the "Best Emerging Director in Fintech" 2022 by UK-based news magazine The Global Economics.
The Nagad executive director is the first individual from Bangladesh's fintech industry to earn this award in the leadership category. Through the award, The Global Economics recognises leaders who strive hard to bring revolutionary changes to their economies.
Jhalak, who oversees the technical aspects of the MFS, played a vital role in the implementation of concepts such as E-KYC and D-KYC.
Global Economics recognised Jhalak for these innovative fintech solutions.
He was instrumental in pioneering the process of opening accounts by dialling *167#; known as D-KYC, according to a media statement.
Jhalak said: "I am humbled and thrilled that The Global Economics has recognised my contributions. Nagad has introduced numerous game-changing innovations that have altered the country's financial industry landscape."

This year, The Global Economics honoured 20 top executives from all around the world for their extraordinary contributions to their respective industries.

Rickshaw puller awarded prize for 999 call to save women in Chattogram
Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) Wednesday awarded a prize to the rickshaw puller, who phoned the national hotline 999 to save a housewife from the clutches of rapists on July 18, for his courage and awareness in the port city.
Krishna Pada Roy, newly appointed commissioner of the CMP, was awarded the prize for the outstanding job of the rickshaw puller identified as Md Abdul Hannan, 32.
CMP Additional Deputy Commissioner Md Ameer Jafar and Deputy Commissioner (North) Mokhlesur Rahman and among others were present during the prize ceremony.
Mentionable, a 23-year-old housewife was returning to her Sholoshahar’s residence by a rickshaw after attending a wedding ceremony in the GEC area around 1:00 am on July 18.
A group of three youths interrupted the rickshaw in front of one ‘Sadia’s Kitchen’ and took her to a makeshift tea stall where six culprits violated her in phases.
Though the rickshaw puller was asked to leave the spot and not to share it with anyone, he informed another rickshaw puller after going a few yards.
The second rickshaw puller phoned the national hotline 999 seeking help in this connection.
Responding to the call, a team of law enforcement agencies from nearby Khulshi police station rushed to the spot and rescued the victim. Moreover, police arrested three of the culprits from the spot.

Barishal Youth Society founder wins Diana Award
Barishal Youth Society (BYS) founder Faez Belal, a young social entrepreneur from Bangladesh, has been awarded the prestigious Diana Award.The award has been considered the most prestigious accolade for a young person aged 9-25 for social action or humanitarian work since 1999.Faez Belal was awarded in recognition of his immense contribution to social work including quality education, climate action, and gender equality.

Walton scoops up RoSPA Health and Safety Gold Award
Walton has bagged the UK-based Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Health and Safety Gold Award.
RoSPA honoured Walton with the award for ensuring a well-developed work environment, occupational health and safety management systems and culture, outstanding control of risk and low levels of error, harm and loss.
Walton is the first Bangladeshi organisation in its industry to receive the prestigious award.
The RoSPA Health and Safety Gold Award was handed over to Walton at a function in London on June 23.

Mohammad Liton Molla, head of Walton's Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) Department, received the award.
The UK-based organisation grants the awards in three categories – gold, silver and bronze.
The RoSPA Awards is one of the most prestigious and recognised schemes in the world, receiving almost 2,000 entries every year.
Nagad bags Visa 'Excellence in Fintech' award
Global payments service provider Visa has conferred mobile financial services provider (MFS) Nagad with the "Excellence in Fintech Product Innovation 2022" award for its easily accessible payment solutions and for enabling users to transfer money from their mobile wallets to any Visa card.
This was the first time Visa awarded the title to an MFS in Bangladesh.
Rahel Ahmed, chief executive officer of Nagad, received the award at the "Visa Leadership Conclave-Digital Payments for Smart Bangladesh 2022" recently held at a city hotel.

"We want to make people's lives easier and this Visa award will inspire us to come up with more such solutions," he added.
"We are delighted to recognise Nagad's contribution through the 'Excellence in Fintech Product Innovation 2022' award," Soumya Basu, Visa country manager for Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan, said.
Nagad and Visa jointly pioneered a solution a few months ago that allows consumers to use Nagad to transfer funds directly from their wallet to any bank account linked to a Visa card, he said.
