Arrest warrant issued against BNP leader Rizvi, 7 others
A Dhaka court on Thursday issued an arrest warrant against BNP’s Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and seven others in a case filed under the Special Powers Act.
Dhaka Metropolitan Session Court judge KM Imrul Kayes issued the warrant taking the charge sheet against 33 BNP leaders into cognizance.
The court set February 22 for submitting the report of action on the arrest warrant.
In January, 2015, police filed the case with Badda police station for which the court was supposed to hear the charges today.
None of the eight BNP leaders were present at the hearing.
Notre Dame College student’s death: Truck driver put on 3-day remand
A Dhaka court on Thursday placed a garbage truck driver on a three-day remand in a case filed over the death of a Notre Dame College student in a road crash.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Tofazzal Hossain passed the order after investigation officer of the case Anisur Rahman, Sub-Inspector of Paltan police station, sought a 7-day remand for interrogating driver Russel Khan.

Meanwhile defense lawyer Firoz Alam submitted a petition seeking his bail which the court rejected.
On Wednesday, Naim Hasan, a 17-year-student of Notre Dame College, was killed when a garbage truck of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) hit him at Golchattar in the city’s Gulistan area while crossing road.
Patrol police in the area detained driver of the vehicle Russel Khan while he was fleeing and seized the truck, said Md A Ahad, deputy police commissioner of Motijheel division of DMP.

A case was filed at Paltan police station in this regard following a complaint lodged by Naim’s father, he said.
Russel was neither appointed by DSCC as a driver nor he has any driving license, said the police official.
DSCC driver Harun used to allow Russel to drive the vehicle in his absence, he said.
Helena Jahangir gets bail in DSA case, may walk out of jail soon
A Dhaka Court on Wednesday granted bail to Helena Jahangir, a businessperson-turned politician, in a case filed under Digital Security Act clearing the last obstacle against her release from jail.
Dhaka’s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Bakar Siddiq passed the order after hearing her bail petition.

Since she got bail in all other cases filed against her since her arrest on July 29 last year, Helena will be freed once the bail orders reach the jail authorities, court sources said.
Helena earlier got bail in cases relating to fraud, illegal possession of narcotics and violation of telecommunication law.

On the night of July 29, members of Rapid Action Battalion-1 (Rab) arresed Helena from her Gulshan residence, four days after she was removed from her post of a women affairs sub-committee of the ruling Awami League.
Aminbazar 6 students killing: Verdict on December 2
A Dhaka court on Monday fixed December 2 to deliver its verdict in a case over the killing of six students at Aminbazar in Savar on the outskirts of the capital in 2011.
Judge Ismat Jahan of Dhaka Second Additional District and Sessions Judge Court fixed the date.
In the early hours of July 17, 2011, six students were beaten to death by angry mob after branding them as bandits at Aminbazar in Savar on the outskirts of the capital.
Three of the deceased were students of Mirpur Bangla College, while the others were of Tejgaon College, Bangladesh University of Business and Technology and Maple Leaf International School in the capital.

Savar Model police filed a murder case against 60 people in connection with their involvement in the killing.
On January 13, 2013, Additional Police Super Sharif Uddin Ahmed of Rab Headquarters, also the investigation officer of the case, pressed charges against the 60 accused.
The trial in the case started on July 8, 2013 after a court framed charges against the accused.

Munia Murder Case: Probe report submission deferred to Nov 21
A Dhaka court on Tuesday deferred to November 21 the submission date of the probe report in a case filed against Bashundhara Group MD Sayem Sobhan Anvir and seven others over the rape and murder of college student Mosarat Jahan Munia.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Begum Yasmin Ara refixed the date as investigating officer (IO) of the case Golam Muktar Ashraf Uddin, also an inspector of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), failed to submit the report on the day, said Saifur Rahman, general registration officer (Women-Children) of Gulshan Police Station.

On April 26, police recovered the body of the 21-year-old college student hanging from a ceiling fan of her bedroom in a Gulshan flat.
Munia's elder sister, Nusrat Jahan Tania, filed a case against Anvir that night accusing him of incitement to suicide.
According to Tania, her sister, Munia, was in a relationship with Anvir who regularly visited her at the Gulshan apartment.
On July 19, the investigating officer of the case Abul Hasan, also the officer-in-charge of Gulshan Police Station, submitted a final report to the court giving a clean chit to Anvir.
On September 6, Munia's sister Tania filed a rape and murder case against the Bashundhara Group MD and seven others with Dhaka's 8th Tribunal for Prevention of Women and Children's Repression.

The court, after recording the complaint, directed the PBI to submit a report on it.
The seven other accused in the case are: Bashundhara Group's Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan Shah Alam, Shah Alam's wife Afroza Begum; Anvir's wife Sabrina Sayem; Faria Mahbub Piyasha; Saifa Rahman Mim; landlord of the flat where the victim was staying, Ibrahim Ahmed Ripon and his wife Sharmim Akhter.
Court sets Jan 10 for framing charges against Samrat in graft case
A Dhaka Court on Monday fixed January 10 for framing charges against expelled Jubo League leader and casino kingpin Ismail Hossain Chowdhury Samrat in graft case.
The case was scheduled to be heard in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge KM Imrul Kayesh on Monday. However, the prison authorities sent a custody warrant without appearing in court as Samrat was ill.
The court then fixed January 10 for holding the hearing on the charge sheet.

Subhash Kumar Ghosh, senior jail superintendent of Keraniganj Central Jail, said in the custody warrant that Samrat has been undergoing treatment in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital since November 24 last year. And so, it was not possible to produce him in court.
Earlier on Wednesday, the court issued a production warrant and ordered the prison authorities to produce Samrat before it on October 25 in a graft case.
According to the case, Samrat was accused of acquiring assets worth Tk 2.94 crore beyond his known sources of income. The Deputy Director of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case against him on November 12 in 2019.
On November 26 last year, the investigation officer of the case, Jahangir Alam, submitted a charge sheet before the court.

On October 6 in 2019, Rab arrested Samrat and his associate Enamul Haque Arman from Chauddagram in Cumilla. Rab later raided his Kakrail office on that day. During this time large quantities of foreign liquor, pistols and two hides of kangaroo were seized from his office.
He was later sentenced by a mobile court to six months in prison under the Wildlife Conservation Act and was sent to jail the same day.
Judgment in Babar’s graft case on Oct 12
A Dhaka court on Monday fixed October 12 for delivering its judgment in a case filed against ex-state minister for Home Lutfozzaman Babar for amassing illegal wealth worth Tk 7.5 crore.
Judge Mohammad Shahidul Islam of Dhaka Special Judge Court-7 fixed the date after closing the law-point arguments from both sides.

On January 13, 2008, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case with Ramna Model Police Station.
On July 16, 2008, deputy assistant secretary of ACC, Rupok Kumar Saha submitted a chargesheet against him.
Babar was arrested from his Gulshan residence on May 28, 2007. He was sentenced to 17 years’ imprisonment in an arms case on October 30, 2007.

He was also sentenced to death in the 10-truck arms haul and August-21 grenade attack cases.
In 2018, a speedy trial tribunal sentenced 19 people, including Babar, to death in a case filed over the August-21 grenade attack on an Awami League rally in the capital in 2004.
Evaly CEO remanded again, wife lands in jail
A Dhaka Court on Tuesday placed Evaly CEO Mohammad Rassel on a one-day remand in a case filed with Dhanmondi Model Police Station on charge of embezzlement and fraudulence.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Hasibul Haque passed the order when police produced him before the court after completion of his three-day remand in a case filed with Gulshan Police Station.
The court also sent his wife Shamima Nasrin, chairman of the company, to jail after expiry of her 3-day remand.
Police produced the duo before the court and sought seven-day remand for each in the case.

Anti-Modi protest: 20 Chatra Odhikar Parishad men get bail
A Dhaka court on Sunday granted bail to 20 members of Chatra Odhikar Parishad who were held for violence during a protest against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bangladesh in last March.
Dhaka Metropolitan Session Judge KM Imrul Kayes passed the bail order during a virtual hearing.
The accused are- Md Younus, Najmul Hasan, Nahidul Tareque, MD Nayeen, Asaduzzaman, Azharul Islam, Sohel Mridha, Mostak Ahmed, Azim Hossain, Md Ruhul Islam Sohel, Abdullah Al Mahmud Jishan, Md Sohel Ahmed, Sheikh Khayrul Kabir, Shobuj Hossain, Golam Tanvir, Md Hemayet, Ismail Hossain, Md Rezaul Karim, Muntajul Islam and Kazi Bahauddin Monir.

On March 25, a rally was held under the banner of Chatra Adhikar Parishad at the Motijheel Shapla Chattar to protest Modi’s visit.
When police tried to stop the activists from taking out a procession a clash between police and the protestors broke out.
Police fired teargas shells and sound grenades at the protestors while they threw stones at them.
Next day police filed a case at the Motijheel police station over the clash.
Owner of e-orange.shop, 2 others land in jail
A Dhaka court on Thursday sent three people including owner of virtual outlet e-orange.shop to jail in a fraud case filed over embezzlement of Tk 1,100 crore from consumers.
The accused are its owner Sonia Mehzabin, her husband Masukur Rahman and Aman Ullah, Chief Operating Officer of e-Orange.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Baki Billah passed the order rejecting their bail petition when they were produced before it on completion of their 5-day remand.

Earlier on Aug 23, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Morshed Al Mamun Bhuiyan placed the accused on a 5-day remand in the fraud case.
On Aug 17, the court sent them to jail rejecting their bail prayers when they surrendered to Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Abubakar Siddique's court.
On August 16, an aggrieved customer of E-Orange Md Taherul Islam filed a fraud case with Gulshan police station in presence of 37 other customers who testified against the accused.
