U.S. COVID-19 deaths top 550,000: Johns Hopkins University
U.S. COVID-19 deaths surpassed 550,000 on Tuesday, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.
With the national case count topping 30.3 million, the death toll across the United States rose to 550,073 as of 8:26 a.m. local time (1226 GMT), according to the CSSE data.
California topped the U.S. state-level death toll list, standing at 59,030. New York reported the country's second largest death toll of 50,158, followed by Texas with 48,134 deaths and Florida with 33,247 deaths, the CSSE tally showed.
States with more than 17,000 fatalities also include Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Illinois, Georgia, Ohio, Massachusetts and Michigan.
The United States remains the nation worst hit by the pandemic, with the world's highest caseload and death toll, accounting for more than 23 percent of global cases and nearly 20 percent of global deaths.

The Transportation Security Administration reported a new air travel record during the pandemic, with more than 1.5 million people screened at U.S. airports on Sunday.

An updated model by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington projected a total of 600,195 COVID-19 deaths in the United States by July 1, based on the current projection scenario.
Global Covid-19 cases top 126 million
The overall number of global Covid-19 cases has now surpassed 126 million, as the pandemic rages on.
According to Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the global Covid cases reached 126,026,603 while the death toll from the virus mounted to 2,766,824 on Saturday.
The US, the worst-hit country in terms of active patients and deaths, has so far recorded 30,155,046 cases and 548,067 fatalities, as per the university data.
The North American country surpassed the grime milestone of 30 million confirmed Covid cases on Thursday.
Brazil on Thursday registered a record number of new Covid-19 cases, after as many as 100,158 people tested positive for the disease.

The South American country has accumulated a total of 12,404,414 Covid-19 cases since the first patient was detected on February 26, 2020, said the ministry.
The death toll in Brazil stood at 307,112 as of Saturday morning.
India has recorded 11, 846,652 cases, with 160,949 deaths, as of Saturday.
Situation in Bangladesh
Bangladesh on Friday reported its highest daily coronavirus cases -- 3,737 -- in the past nine months. On July 2 last year, the country reported 4,019 cases.

On Friday, the daily infection rate rose to 13.69% from 13.26% on Thursday.
Meanwhile, 33 new deaths have pushed the country’s tally to 8,830. Twenty-six of the deaths were reported from Dhaka, six from Chattogram and one from Rajshahi.
The death rate is currently at 1.5 percent, the Directorate General of Health Services has said in a handout.
So far, the government has confirmed 588,132 cases, but 531,951 (90.45%) of them have recovered, including 2,057 new recoveries.

The country has so far tested 4,542,030 samples – 27,299 in the past 24 hours.
Bangladesh reported its first coronavirus cases on March 8 last year and the first death on the 18th of that month.
The country launched a countrywide vaccination drive on February 7. As the daily infection rate rose, the government extended the ongoing shutdown of educational institutions till May.
Global Covid cases near 125 million
The Covid-19 pandemic continues to spread around the world, with over 124.6 million cases and 2.7 million deaths.
The total case count reached 124,688,146 while the death toll from the virus climbed to 545,237 on Thursday morning, according to Johns Hopkins University (JHU).

India’s total Covid tally surpassed 11,734,058 while the country’s death toll mounted to 160,441, as per the latest data released by the government.
A new and potentially troublesome variant of the coronavirus has been detected in India, as have variants been first detected in the United Kingdom, South Africa and Brazil, health officials said Wednesday, reports AP.
Health Ministry officials and experts, however, cautioned against linking the variants with an ongoing surge in new infections in India.

Cases in India had been plummeting since September and life was returning to normal. But cases began spiking last month, and more than 47,000 new infections have been detected in the past 24 hours, along with 275 deaths -- the highest one-day death toll in more than four months.
Situation in Bangladesh
Covid-19 claimed 25 more lives and infected 3,567 others in the past 24 hours till Wednesday morning amid an alarming spike in cases over the past few weeks in Bangladesh.
The coronavirus fatalities rose to 8,763 with the latest figure while the new cases pushed the total infections to 580,808, according to a handout of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
With the fresh 3,537 cases, Bangladesh has seen the worst daily increase for the second consecutive day since July 15, 2020.
The free movement of people ignoring the health protocols is believed to be the reason behind the recent upsurge in cases.
The infection rate slightly dropped to 12.97 percent from 13.69 percent a day before.
The mortality rate now stands at 1.51 percent, which remained static at 1.52 percent for the past four days, the directorate said.
The DGHS media release says 527,909 patients -- 91.89 percent -- have so far recovered from the virus infection, including 1,915 in the past 24 hours.

The first Covid-19 cases were reported in the country on March 8, 2020, while the first death on March 18 the same year.
Coronavirus tests are being conducted at 118 government and private hospitals in Bangladesh.
Till Wednesday, some 4,487,686 samples were tested across the country, including 27,502 in the past 24 hours.
The Covid-19 vaccination drive is underway across the country aiming to protect people from the virus infection.
So far, 4,990,232 people have been vaccinated in the country since the drive began with the Oxford-AstraZeneca jab on February 7.
In the wake of a sharp rise in coronavirus cases, Health Minister Zahid Maleque on Wednesday announced that 3,000 more beds will be added to hospitals across the country to tackle the rising number of patients.
“The number of Covid patients need to be reduced fast. If the current rate of virus infection continues, it won’t be possible to tackle the situation with the existing arrangements,” he said.
Global Covid-19 cases surpass 124 million
With the Covid-19 situation worsening around the world, the global caseload crossed 124 million on Wednesday.

India's Covid-19 tally reached 11,686,796 on Wednesday, as 40,715 new cases were reported from across the country.
Besides, 199 deaths since Monday morning took the toll to 160,166, showing the highest number of fatalities in a day this year so far.
Situation in Bangladesh
Some 3,554 people were diagnosed with Covid-19 in Bangladesh in 24 hours till Tuesday morning, the highest number of infections registered by the country in a single day.
Bangladesh also recorded 18 more Covid-related deaths during the period, raising the death toll to 8,738.

Global Covid fatalities top 2.7 million
The global Covid-19 fatalities surged past 2.7 million Tuesday as the number of deaths rose for the first time in six weeks.
The total death toll and cases now stand at 2,722,715 and 123,635,513, respectively, according to Johns Hopkins University.
The US has so far registered 29,867,690 cases and 542,888 fatalities.
India's Covid tally reached 11,646,081 on Tuesday. Besides, the fatalities climbed to 159,967.
The number of daily active cases has been on the rise over the past few days, even as another wave of Covid-19 looms large in India.
In January, the number of daily cases in the country came down to below 10,000. As many as 9,102 new cases were reported between January 25 and 26, which was the lowest in the previous 237 days. Prior to that, the lowest number of daily new cases were 9,304 -- registered on June 4, 2020.

Brazil on Monday said 1,383 more people died from the novel coronavirus disease in 24 hours, raising the national death toll to 295,425.
According to the Ministry of Health, tests detected 49,293 new cases, bringing the nationwide count to 12,047,526.
Brazil is one of the countries hardest hit by the virus worldwide in terms of both deaths and cases, second only to the United States.
Since January, Brazil has experienced a new wave of infections, forcing several states and cities to step up social distancing measures.

Situation in Bangladesh
Bangladesh witnessed a big jump in the number of Covid-19 deaths and infections as health authorities recorded 30 more deaths and 2,809 new cases in 24 hours till Monday morning.
With the new cases, Bangladesh saw the worst daily increase since January this year. The infection rate jumped to 11.19 percent, which was 10.29 percent a day before.
Health experts said poor adherence to health safety rules is causing the quick surge in the virus infection rate in the country. The detection of its new variant has also become a cause of concern.
Ten EU-returnees have so far been detected with the new strain of Covid-19 in Bangladesh, which was first reported in the UK, said Health Minister Zahid Maleque on March 17.
With the latest figures, the death toll from Covid-19 in Bangladesh have surged to 8,720 and the total infections to 573,687, said the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
A DGHS handout said the mortality rate in Bangladesh stood at 1.52 percent for the fourth consecutive day after remaining static at 1.53 percent over the past week.
