Two children drown in Jashore pond
The bodies of two teenagers were recovered from a pond at Navaran Dakshinpara field in Jhikargachha upazila of Jashore district on Sunday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Parash Hossain, 13, son of Mahasin Hossain of Navaran Belermath village in Jhikargachha upazila. He was a class 5 student of Yaqub Bhuiyan Shishu Academy and Saikat Hossain, 13, son of Sagar Hossain of the same area. He was studying in a madrasa in Jessore. The two of them are cousins.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jhikargachha Police Station Sumon Bhakta said the body was handed over without an autopsy on the request of the family. A case of unnatural death has been registered in this regard.
Bhaijan now coming to Jashore
Bhaijan, hearing the name one can think about uttering the name of the Hindi cinema ‘Bhaijan’ but here the matter is different. A bull named ‘Bhaijan’ is now the talk of the town in Jashore.
Already people from different parts of the district have been thronging at the house of one Mahidul Zaman Kajal of Sitarampur village in Sadar upazila, who reared the 10 feet long and 5.8 inches height cow at his farm.
Currently, the big bull weighs around 1,356 kg.
Mahidul demanded Tk 18 lakh for Bhaijan.

According to the district livestock department, of the big size bulls reared in the district, Bhaijan is the largest among all.
“I bought Bhaijan, an Australian Frisian variety cow, when he was six-month old at a cost of Tk 69,000. I kept him with other cattle in my farm,” said Mahidul.Gradually he was named as ‘Bhaijan’ following his healthy and fit body size, he said.
He ate food weighing 10-12 kg in a day and he gets showers three days in a week with shampoo, said the cattle farmer.
Quamrul Islam, a worker of the farm, said “We reared ‘Bhaijan’ as our child and two people remained to stand by him round the clock.”

Many people visited the farm to catch a glimpse of ‘Bhaijan’ and some of them took selfies with him.
District Livestock Officer Rashedul Haque said, 'I have visited the farm of Mahidul and he is rearing his cow using organic methods properly.’
This year, a total of 35,000 cows and 60,500 goats have been prepared in 9,000 small and big size farms ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, he said.

Two stabbed to death in separate incidents in Jashore
Two persons were stabbed to death in separate incidents in Jashore on Friday.
Yunus (22) was stabbed to death, allegedly by his younger brother, at Ghurulia village in Jashore Sadar upazila around 9 pm last night. Meanwhile, a teenager named Nahid Hasan (17) was stabbed to death by members of a youth gang in Barandi Nathpara of Jashore city, said Jashore Police’s spokesman OC DB Rupan Kumar Sarker.
"Initially, it was learned that the elder brother (Yunus) was stabbed to death by his younger brother Yusuf in Ghurulia over a family dispute,” said the OC.
On the other hand, Nahid Hasan was murdered in Barandi Nathpara of Jashore city over a dispute with a youth gang, the DB official also said.
Nahid used to work with his elder brother at a motorparts shop on RN Road in the city. At around 9:45 pm yesterday, he was chatting with an acquaintance in the Barandi Nathpara area. At the time, they had a dispute with a juvenile gang, according to locals.
During the dispute, the youth gang members stabbed Nahid and his friend and fled the scene, they said.
Later, locals rescued them and took them to Jashore 250-bed General Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared Nahid dead.
The bodies of the two deceased have been sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy. Police have launched a manhunt to investigate the incidents and arrest those involved, said OC Rupan.
BGB recovers 60 gold bars worth almost Tk 9-cr in Jashore
Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) recovered a large haul of gold amounting to almost 9kg, distributed equally in 60 bars, from the Rajarhat area in Jashore on Tuesday.
A BGB press release signed by Lieutenant Colonel Shahed Minhaj Siddique, a commandant of the BGB-49 in Jashore, said they came to know that a white microbus carrying a consignment of gold was heading to Jashore from the capital, with the aim to smuggle the illegal consignment to India through the border.
Two teams from Khulna and Jashore-BGB battalions took positions in separate spots to detain the microbus.
After a chase by Khulna BGB, the microbus entered Jashore while another team also chased it.
The microbus fell into a roadside ditch after the driver lost control over the steering being chased by the BGB members, it said.
The driver, however, managed to flee from the vehicle before the arrival of the frontier forces.
Later, a total of 60 gold bars weighing around 8.974 kilograms was recovered from the vehicle, the release said.
The market price of the seized gold was estimated over Tk 8.97 crore and those were submitted to exchequers through Sadar police station.
A process is underway to file a case in this connection, the BGB release added.

Pahela Falgun (first day of spring on Bangla calendar), Shaheed Dibash (International Mother Language Day and Language Martyrs Day), and Valentine’s Day all fall in the month of February and flowers are a must-have for these occasions. Understandably, this month brings smiles to flower farmers and traders across Bangladesh.
Flower farmers of Godkhali union under Jhikargacha upazila of Jashore district, one of the largest flower markets of the country, is busy with the hope of selling flowers worth around Tk 300 crore.
Godkhali, known as the “flower capital” of the country, has taken on a mesmerizing look with red, blue, yellow, purple and white flowers.
This year, local farmers have cultivated various flowers on about 600 hectares of land in Godkhali. Ninety percent people of this village make a living by cultivating flowers.

Flowers cultivated in 75 villages of Jhikargacha, 25 kms from Jashore town, include marigolds, roses, gladiolus, gerberas, daisies, gypsies and dahlias.
Every year flowers worth around Tk 500 crore are grown in the fields.
Flower farmers and traders make huge profits every year in February as demand for flowers increase during the three major events – Pahela Falgun, Valentine’s Day and International Mother Language Day.
Abdur Rahim, president of Bangladesh Flower Growers’ Association, said that a lion’s share of roses comes from Jashore’s Godkhali area. Not only roses, other varieties of flowers are also grown here.

As the weather was favourable this year, farmers are working day and night in the fields – optimistic about big sales, he added.
Flower farmer Bablur Rahman said, many wholesalers and retailers from different parts of the country have started thronging the Godkhali market of Jhikargacha.
Ismail Hossain, a farmer of Panisara village, said, “Tulips have added a different dimension this year in this flower kingdom. No one imagined that this flower – from cold countries – would bloom here.”
Murder case accused shot dead in Jashore
An accused in a murder case was shot dead in Abhaynagar upazila of Jashore on Wednesday morning.
The deceased was identified as Subrata Mondal, 42, of the upazila, a fish trader. He was an accused in the murder case of Rakibul, a member of Phultala Bazar Merchants Association.

AK Shamim, officer-in-charge (OC) of Abhaynagar police station, said two miscreants coming in a motorcycle shot him in his head near Damukhali Primary School on his way to Bhabdaha wholesale fish market around 8am and fled the scene.
The body was sent to Jashore General Hospital morgue for an autopsy, he added.

Efforts are on to arrest the killers, said the OC.
Cold wave: Jashore, Chuadanga record lowest temperature at 7.8 degree C
Jashore and Chuadanga districts recorded the lowest temperature in Bangladesh, at 7.8 degree Celsius, in 24 hours till this morning as a mild cold wave is sweeping across the country.
Chuadanga has been recording the lowest temperatures for the third consecutive day, said Rakibul Hasan, officer-in-charge of Chuadanga's local meteorological office.
“This situation will remain for a day or two. The temperature may drop further,” he added.
Dhaka recorded 12.3 degree Celsius during this period.

A mild to moderate cold wave is sweeping over Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions and the districts of Tangail, Faridpur, Manikganj, Jashore, Chuadanga, Satkhira and Kushtia and it may continue, Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said this morning.
Besides, moderate to thick fog may occur over the country from midnight to morning, and it may continue till noon at places.
Night temperature may remain nearly unchanged and day temperature may rise slightly over the country. Due to the reduced difference between day and night temperature, moderate to severe cold conditions are likely over the country, it added.
Weather may remain dry with temporary partly cloudy skies over the country.

A biting cold spell has also continued to sweep across Kurigram. The district recorded 8.6 degree Celsius temperature in 24 hours till this morning, said Kurigram's Rajarhat Agricultural Meteorological Office's Meteorological Observer Tuhin Miah.
Due to the downtrend in the temperature, the people of char areas of 16 rivers including Brahmaputra, Dharla, Teesta and Dudhkumar are facing difficulties.
Also, the number of diarrhoea and pneumonia patients – mostly children and the elderly – is increasing in hospitals of Kurigram, said Kurigram General Hospital’s resident physician Dr Shahinur Rahman Shipon.

Jashore: Father, son among 5 killed as covered van ploughs into restaurant
At least five people, including a man and his son, were killed as a covered van veered off the road and ploughed into a roadside restaurant in Manirampur upazila of Jashore early Friday, police said.
The five people killed were identified as Habibur Rahman, 55, his son Taosi, 7, Ziarul, 35, Tauhidur, 35, and Mir Shamsul, 50, of the upazila.

"The accident occurred around 7:30am when the driver of a covered van lost control of his vehicle and ploughed into a restaurant in Begaritola when three of the five people were having breakfast, and others were standing nearby. They immediately died from the impact of the crash," Sheikh Moniruzzaman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Manirampur Police Station, said.

"Police seized the covered van, but its driver managed to flee. The bodies were sent to Jashore General Hospital," the OC added.
20 hurt in Jashore jute mill fire
At least 20 workers were injured as a fire broke out at a jute mill in Sharsha upazila of Jashore on Saturday.
The fire started around 1 am in Afil Jute Weaving Mill owned by Sheikh Afil Uddin, a member of parliament from Jessore-1 constituency, said Manoranjan Sarkar, Assistant Director of Benapole fire service.
The flames was bought under control after strenuous effort of six firefighting units from Jashore, Jhikargacha and Benapole fire service, he said.

Of the injured workers, Akher Ali was admitted to Jashore General Hospital with severe burn injury while others were released after giving primary medications, he said.
Three warehouses of the mill were gutted in the fire,said Abdul General Manager of Afil Jute Mill.
“We suspect the fire originated from an electric short circuit. The extent of damages can be confirmed after proper investigation, said fire service official Manoranjan Sarkar.

Jashore gears up for PM’s rally Thursday amid tight security
The leaders and activists of Awami League (AL) are preparing to hold the party’s rally in Jashore on Thursday when Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to be present as chief guest.
A boat-shaped stage has already been prepared at the rally venue at Jashore Stadium.
The law enforcement agencies and district administration deployed Rapid Action Battalion’s (Rab) dog squad with other precautions from Tuesday to ensure security as around “10 lakh” people are expected to join the rally.

Jashore District Awami League senior vice-president and convener of stage decoration sub-committee Abdul Majid said they were ready to make the rally successful.
Jashore District AL President Shahidul Islam Milon said the people of the district and the southern region are eagerly waiting to hear the speech of the Prime Minister.
Expecting the Jashore stadium to be a human sea tomorrow, Milon said additional preparations have also been made to hold the rally in an orderly and festive atmosphere.
“The PM’s rally in Jashore will prove that the Awami League is against anarchy and chaos. And the party is determined to take the country forward in line with the spirit of the Liberation War,” said the AL leader.

A team of 400 volunteers has been formed to make the rally a success. The members of this committee will assist those coming to the rally, said District AL Secretary for Relief and Social Welfare Affairs and convener of Discipline and Volunteer Sub-Council Sukhen Majumdar.
Preparations for drinking water and sanitation at the rally in Jashore Stadium connecting the field of Abdur Razzak College have also been completed properly, said the district’s Public Health Engineering Directorate Executive Engineer Zahid Parvez.
From Jashore airport to the stadium, the walls of public-private and autonomous institutions have been painted in different colours with the PM's speech and various slogans of the party. Repair work of the damaged road has already been completed.

Jashore Sadar Traffic Inspector Subhendu Kumar Munshi said 12 specific routes have been allowed to reach the venue. No vehicles will enter the city on the day of the rally.
Around 20 parking areas have been selected as per the target of district Awami League, he added.
