Three held for attack on Rajshahi University student
Police have arrested three people in connection with the attack on a Rajshahi University student at a hostel in the Amzader More area of the city on Wednesday night.
The arrestees have been identified as Nazmul, owner of NR Chhatrabash, and his two staff -- Loban and Shariful, said Anwar Hossain Tuhin, officer-in-charge of Motihar police station.
The three were arrested during a drive on Thursday after a case was filed at the police station following a complaint from the victim Saffat Naeem Nafi’s friend Sharif, said the OC.

Saffat, a student of the physics department of the 2019-20 session, is currently being treated at Dhaka's National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) after being stabbed by miscreants.
Ibrahim Hossain, a student of the same department and also a witness to the crime, said they went to NR hostel that night to resolve a problem among RU student Sharif and some admission seekers staying at the hostel.
"At one stage, some people came to the hostel gate and suddenly attacked us. We managed to escape but Saffat was stabbed,” he added.
The students of the physics department staged a sit-in protesting the attack in front of the university vice-chancellor’s residence on Thursday morning.
They dispersed only after an assurance from the vice-chancellor.

RU proctor Professor Ashabul Haque said that he heard that some junior students in the mess had locked into an altercation with Sharif for not offering namaz.
"Some people, including Nafi, went to resolve the issue. A meeting was also held at the hostel that night and the mess owner was also present there," he added.
9-year old killed after being hit by truck in city, driver held
A 9-year old boy was killed as a truck his bicycle in the city's Sabujbagh area on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Sajjad Hossain, a student of class IV of Sabujbagh Government Primary School and son of Md Riaz, a resident of North Bashabo area.
The accident occurred around 12 pm when the soil-laden truck hit the bicycle of Sajjad , leaving him dead on the spot, said Moniruzzaman, Sub inspector of Sabujbagh police station.

Locals held truck driver Mosharef,48, and handed him over to police, said SI Moniruzaman.
The body was sent to hospital morgue for an autopsy and the truck was seized, he said.

Gang-rape in Bagherhat: Key accused held by Rab
Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) members on Thursday arrested the key accused in the incident of gang-raping a woman while committing burglary tying her husband and son in Morrelganj upazila in Bagerhat.
The arrestee was identified as Riaz Shikder,38, son of Abdul Mazid from Barshibah village in the upazila.
Rab Khulna-6 nabbed the accused from Bagmara area in Kachua upazila during a drive, said Police Superintendant Al-Asad Md Mahfuzul Islam, also company commander of Rab-6.
He said Rab started a shadow investigation along with police after a case was filed at Morrelganj police station on Wednesday following the complaint lodged by the woman’s husband accusing Riaz and some 10 others.
Riaz is being interrogated at the Rab-6 office and efforts are on to capture the other accused, said the SP.

Meanwhile, Bagerhat Chief Judicial Magistrate recorded the statement of the woman in this case under section 22, said Md Iqbal Bahar Chowdhury, Officer-in-Charge of Morrelganj police station.
Dr Sheikh Adnan Hossain, Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of Bagerhat Sadar Hospital said, “A board consisting three female physicians has conducted the medical examinations of the housewife and they will soon give a report”.
In late hours of Tuesday, a gang of burglars entered a day-labourer’s house by digging through the lower part of the mud house before committing the crime.

They also took way gold jewellery, money and other valuables from the house before fleeing, said the husband in the complaint.
Child sexually abused in city, tutor held
A class three girl student has been sexually abused allegedly by her house tutor in the city’s Mirpur area.
The tutor Shawkat Hossain, also an official of Agrani Bank, sexually abused the child when he came to teach her at her home around 10 pm on Saturday, alleged the child’s mother.

The mother said the child went to her mother crying shortly after the house tutor arrived as she was bleeding. She also told her mother about the abuse.
The child was admitted to the One-Stop Crisis Centre at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) in the small hours of Sunday, said Inspector Bachchu Mia, in-charge of DMCH outpost.
Police arrested Shawkat in this regard. Steps are being made to file a case against the tutor, said the child’s mother.

Policeman held after alleged torture of wife for dowry
A police inspector has been arrested in the city after his wife lodged a case accusing him of torturing her for dowry money.
The arrestee is Mohammad Shamsuddoha, 40, inspector of Darshana police station in Chuadanga district.
Gulshan police arrested him from Rajabazar area of Dhaka early hours of Thursday. He was later sent to Faridpur’s Kotwali Police Station.
Officer-in-charge of Faridpur Kotwali Police Station MA Jalil said Shamsuddoha has been arrested from Dhaka’s Rajabazar in a case filed by his wife Farzana Khandaker Tuli for torturing her for dowry money.
Farzana said that Shamsuddoha asked Tk 70 lakh from her family. She managed to give him Tk 15 lakh from her family but he kept torturing him for more money. So, she went to her father’s home.

She said that her husband warned her not to return without the money.
She also found that Shamsuddoha has an extramarital affair.

Arms seized at Ctg port: One held
Police arrested a man in connection with the seizure of arms at Chattogram Airport, from Halishohor in the city early Tuesday.
The arrestee was identified as Majumdar Quamrul Hasan, an officer of Chattogram Tax zone-1 and resident of Agrabad.
Tipped off, a team of police arrested Quamrul from his in-laws house at Khalpar in Halishohor in the dead of night using technology, said assistant commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police, Tarek Aziz.
Earlier on Sunday, two pistol like objects and 60 rounds of bullets were seized at Chattogram port. The seized arms were coming from Ialy under home appliances parcel.
The receiver of the parcel was Quamrul and the sender of the parcel was Rajib Barua.
A case was filed with Double Mooring Police Station.
10 fraud gang members held for issuing fake driving licenses
Detectives have arrested 10 members of a fraud gang involved in issuing fake driving licenses.
The arrestees are Md Liton Pike, Sujan Pike, Md Hasan Sheikh alias Akchan, Md Ali alias Mister, Md Abdul Khalek, Md Abdullah Rony, Md Sohel Rana, Md Sohag, Md Nur Nabi and Md Humayun Kabir.
They used to introduce themselves as officials of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), said AKM Hafeez Akhter, Additional Commissioner of Police in DB, at a press briefing at DMP Media Center on Wednesday.

The organized crime and vehicle theft prevention team of DB of Lalbagh Division made the arrests after conducting a series of drives at Mirpur Mazar Road and Uttara's Diabari area of the capital from early hours of Tuesday, said the official.
During the drive, police seized a huge amount of driving license applications, application form for apprentice driving license, dope test files, two monitors, two CPUs, two keyboards, a colour printer, a laminating machine, two VGA cables, two power cords, six stamps, 04 Nokia keypad mobiles, 14 mobile phone sets of different models from their possession.
Additional Commissioner of Police in DB AKM Hafeez Akhter said many road accidents occur in the country due to inefficiency of the drivers as getting a fake driving license has become easy for these frauds.
Following these accidents, detectives found a gang operating a fake BRTA office in the capital.
During interrogation, the arrestees said the application forms were taken out of the office with the help of some dishonest BRTA officials and their other associates.
They used to provide customers driving licenses using fake police verification reports with a fake seal, the DB official added.
Legal processes are underway against the arrestees, he added.
Man held for killing his wife in Chapainawabganj
A woman was suffocated to death allegedly by her husband over a family feud in Gulbag Natunpara Moholla of Chapainawabganj district on Sunday night, police said.
The deceased was identified as Shamima Khatun Sathi, 23, daughter of lateShahidul Haque of Parbatipur upazila of Dinajpur district.
Police arrested her husband Shahin Ali, 23, son of Babul Haque of Shampur in Shibganj upazila, from the spot.

Mozaffar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Chapainawabganj Sadar Police Station, said Shahin Ali, a tenant of Saiful Islam Masud, strangled his wife to death around 11:15pm on Sunday night.
On information, police rushed to the spot and recovered the body, he added.
Police recovered a black scarf used in the murder from the spot.

The body was sent to Chapainawabganj Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy, the OC added.
7 robbers held in Dhaka
Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Saturday claimed to have arrested seven men for robbing two Indian nationals studying medicine in the capital.
The arrestees have been identified as Md Fakhrul Islam Foku, Md Almas, Md Samun, Md Abdullah Al Yusuf Ahmed Asik, Md Shahin, Md Babu and Md Shafiqul Islam.
The seven were arrested from different parts of the city and Keraniganj during raids on Friday, officials said. A private car, two machetes, a laptop, 19 mobile phones and some cash were found in their possession.

On January 23, Shahil Ahmed and Asif Iqbal, the two students of Dr Sirajul Medical College Hospital in Dhaka, were leaving for India on a two-week vacation.
Around 5am, on their way to the airport, the two were stopped by masked robbers in front of the Grameen Check showroom in the Magbazar Wireless area and robbed of their belongings, including a trolley bag, a handbag, a laptop, two mobile phones, Indian rupees 57,000 and Tk 7,600 in cash.

Following their complaint, an FIR was filed at Ramna Model Police Station on the same day.
The arrestees were wanted in several cases lodged at different police stations of the capital, the DMP said in a release.
6 held with drugs at RU campus
Six outsiders were detained with some drugs on Monday evening at Syed Amir Ali hall area of Rajshahi University.
They were detained while Police team and Rajshahi University proctorial body were on a drive in the campus.
RU proctor Md. Leakot Ali said to UNB, "We were in a drive at campus. Suspecting the place we went there and found two groups with drugs. Two were in a group and four other were in another group.They were not identified as the students of this university."

"We handed them over to the Motihar police as they are not our students," said the proctor.
Asked about the matter, Anwar Hossain Tuhin, officer in charge of Motihar Police Station, told UNB that he hadn’t learned about the matter yet as he was not on duty.
