2 to die for 2017 underworld murder in Khulna
A Khulna court on Tuesday sentenced two people to death and two others to life imprisonment in a case filed over the murder of a man in 2017.
Khulna Public Safety Disturbance Crime Prevention Tribunal Judge Md Saifuzzaman Hero handed down the judgment.
The condemned convicts are --Sumon Mallik and Ashiqur Rahman Ashique while the lifers are identified as Kalu alias Choto Kalu and Md Taleb.

Sumon, Ashique and Kalu were tried in absentia.
The tribunal also fined Kalu and Taleb Tk 10,000 each.
According to the prosecution, Shahidul and the convicts had long been involved in different criminal cases including mugging, robbery and drug running in Khulna city.
In the meantime, the convicts developed an enmity with Shahidul over controlling the illegal businesses.
As a sequel to the enmity, the convicts stabbed Shahidul indiscriminately near Joragate area of the city on July 11, 2017, leaving him critically injured.
He was taken to Khulna Medical College and Hospital where the doctors declared him dead.

An FIR was lodged with Kotwali Model Police and police submitted chargesheet against seven people on August 22, 2017.
The court also acquitted three others as allegations brought against them could not be proved.
5 to die for killing farmer in Laxmipur
A Laxmipur court on Wednesday sentenced five people to death and three others to life imprisonment for killing a farmer in 2018.
District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Rahibul Islam handed down the judgment.

The condemned convicts are—Jashim Uddin, Nur Mia, Shafiqur Rahman, Touhir Hossain and Rubel Hossain.
The lifers are Jewel, Rahela Begum and Moktar Hossain. Of them Jewel and Moktar tried in absentia.
The court also acquitted three accused—Osman Kabiraj, Umme Habiba and Sumaiya—as allegations brought against them could not be proved.
According to the prosecution, Akbar Hossain of Charbonshi in Raipur upazila was stabbed to death by the convicts on September 7, 2018 over land dispute.

Tahirul Islam, son of Akbar lodged a complaint with Raipur Police.
On April, 1, 2019, police submitted chargesheet against 11 people.
5-yr-old girl raped in Dinajpur: Man gets life imprisonment
A Dinajpur court on Monday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for violating a five-year-old girl in 2016.
Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Sharif Uddin Ahmed handed down the verdict.
Saiful Islam, 46 of Parbatipur upazila has also been slapped with a fine k 20,000, in default, to suffer six months more in jail with hard labour.

The court acquitted co-accused Afzal Hossain Kabiraj as allegations brought against him could not be proved.
According to the prosecution, the five-year-old girl of Jamirhat Takeyapara in Parbatipur upazila was raped by the convict on October 18, 2016.
Local people rescued the girl from a turmeric field the following day in a critical condition as she was left there suspecting her to be dead.
She was first taken to a local hospital and then shifted to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital. Later, the doctors shifted her to Dhaka for better treatment.

Police arrested Saiful and his associate Afzal in this connection, two days after the crime.
In 2017, sub-inspector Abu Syed also the investigative officer of the case submitted chargesheet against the duo.
Noakhali housewife molestation: 2 get life term
A tribunal in Noakhali on Monday sentenced two people to life imprisonment in a case over the rape of a housewife at Joykrishnapur village in Begumganj upazila of Noakhali district in September last year.
The horrific incident of sexual violence after around 10 days of another rape incident at Sylhet’s MC College sparked huge outcry across the country.
The lifers are Delwar Hossain alias Delu, leader of ‘Delwar Bahini’ and his associate Mohammad Ali alias Abul Kalam, residents of Eklashpur union of the upazila.

Noakhali Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 Judge Joynal Abedin handed down the verdict in the presence of the convicts at 11am.
The convicts were fined Tk 50,000 each, in default, to suffer three months more rigorous imprisonment.
Advocate Mamunur Rashid Lablu stood for the state while advocate Mollah Habibur Rasul Mamun represented the plaintiff and advocate Jasim Uddin Badal for the accused.
According to court sources, the court had earlier framed charges against the accused on February 17. Later on August 18, the testimony of the plaintiff was recorded in the presence of the accused.

On October 6 in 2020, the victim filed the case against Delwar and Kalam at Begumganj Model Police Station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
The case was later handed over to the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI). The PBI submitted a chargesheet to the court on December 15, 2020.
Police said Delwar violated the victim several times at gun point one year ago.
According to the case statement, the victim was molested by some local miscreants of ‘Delwar Bahini’ at Ward No. 9 of Eklashpur Union on September 2 in 2020.
The incident came to light after a video of the barbaric incident went viral on the internet.

The miscreants tortured the housewife after undressing her and captured it on phone. The video sent a shock wave throughout the country, triggering protests everywhere.
The victim filed two cases accusing nine people 33 days after the incident.
One of the cases was filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act and another under the Pornography Control Act.
2 get life term for killing auto-rickshaw driver in Lakshmipur
A Lakshmipur court on Wednesday sentenced two people to life imprisonment in a case over killing an auto-rickshaw driver in 2013.
The lifers are Mohan, son of Moin Uddin of Birahimpur village in Lakshmipur Sadar, and Tareq, son of Abdullah of Rashidpur village. Mohan was tried in absentia.

The court also fined them Tk 10,000 each, in default, to suffer one year more rigorous imprisonment, said Public Prosecutor (PP) of Lakshmipur Judge Court Jasim Uddin.
According to the case, the convicts killed CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver Mohin at Bijoynagar village in Hamchhadi Union of Lakshmiipur Sadar on July 27 in 2013.
Police recovered the body from roadside.

On following day, a case was filed at Lakshmipur Sadar Police Station in this regard.
Police investigated the case and submitted a chargesheet against Mohan and Tareq on January 13, 2014.
Woman sentenced to life imprisonment for husband’s murder in Feni
A court here on Thursday sentenced a woman convicted of her husband’s murder in 2014 to life imprisonment.
District and session Judge Dr Jebunnesa passed the order against Shahnaz Nadia for her role in the murder of her husband businessman Kawsar Mahmud in Feni.
Hafez Ahmed, public prosecutor in the case, said, “We are satisfied with the exemplary sentence given to Shahnaz Nadia in Kawsar Mahmud’s murder case.”
Meanwhile defense lawyer Ahsan Kabir said an appeal will be filed with the higher court as the judgment was given based on confessional statement only.

Kawsar’s brother-in-law Saif Uddin Mahmud said they will appeal for death sentence to the convict at the higher court.
Testimonial statements of 17 of the 29 witnesses in the case were recorded by the court in this case including the investigation officers and the plaintiff till September 15 this year.
On April 11, 2014 Kawsar went to visit a doctor with his wife Nadia when some miscreants near Falahia Madrasa in Feni hacked him with a knife and ran away.
Doctors announced him dead after he was rushed to Feni General Hospital.
The next day Kawsar’s father professor Abul Khayer filed a murder case against Nadia and one Md Harun.

On April 13, 2014 investigation officer of the case Sub-Inspector Md Alamgir Hossain arrested Nadia from her residence.
Accused Nadia confessed to killing Kawsar alone before the court the same day.
On June 7, 2014 the case was handed over to SI Kamrul Islam for investigation.
Meanwhile the other accused of the case Md Harun was murdered by some miscreants.
On October 30, 2015, SI Kamrul Islam filed charge sheet of the murder case against Nadia and Harun.
Four to hang for killing Kushtia sub-registrar
A local court on Tuesday sentenced four men to death and another one to life imprisonment for the 2018 gruesome murder of Kushtia Sadar sub-registrar Noor Mohammad Shah.
Kushtia additional district and sessions judge Tajul Islam handed down death sentences to Saidul Islam (37), Faruk Hossain (38), Kamal Sheikh (40) and Mashiul Alam (40), and life term to Monowar Hossain Dablu (38), after holding them guilty of killing Nur Mohammad.

All the five were present in the court when the judgement was pronounced around 11 am. Among the convicts, Monwar and Saidul were employees of the Kushtia Sadar sub-registry office.
Nur Mohammad (50) was hacked to death in his house in Kushtia town on October 8 in 2018. The following day, Kamruzzaman, the brother of the deceased, filed a complaint at the Kushtia Model police station against unidentified accused.
Later, the police arrested four people in connection with the murder and seized sharp weapons and ropes from their possession. The accused later gave a confessional statement in the court.
4 get life term for killing Ruet driver
A Rajshahi court on Wednesday sentenced four people to life term jail for killing a bus driver of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (Ruet) in 2018.
Justice Anup Kumar of the Rajshahi Speedy Trial Tribunal pronounced the verdict.
The convicts are- Sabbir Hossain,, Nur Nabi Hossain alias Hridoy, Sohail Rana alias Sohail and SM Sayem.

The court also fined them Tk 10000 each, in default, to suffer one month more RI.
There are two other accused in the case whose verdict is still pending with a separate juvenile court.

Abdus Salam, a bus driver, was stabbed by the accused on the south-east side of Agrani School and College adjacent to RUET on April 23, 2018 while attempting to resolve a local conflict. Later, he died at Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital.
Abdus Salam's son Pias filed a case with Motihar police station against unidentified accused.
It’s settled: Life term means 30 yrs imprisonment
Life imprisonment in Bangladesh means a convict will remain behind bars for 30 years unless specifically mentioned in the verdict that the person is sentenced to imprisonment until natural death.
The 120-page full verdict of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh on the matter was published on its website on Thursday.

“Imprisonment for life is equivalent to imprisonment for 30 years if sections 45 and 53 are read together along with sections 55 and 57 of the Penal Code and 35A of the Code of Criminal Procedure,” it read.
However, the convict will not be entitled to get the benefit of section 35A of the Code of Criminal Procedure, if awarded life imprisonment by the International Crimes Tribunal under International Crimes Tribunals Act, 1973.

A seven-member bench, led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, passed a short verdict on December 1 last year over the matter following a review petition filed by a convict, Ataur Mridha.
Attorney General AM Amin Uddin stood for the state while Advocate Khandakar Mahbub Hossain represented the petitioner.
