Lightning kills 2 in Bandarban
Two members of a family were killed by a lightning strike in Lama Upazila of Bandarban district Monday night.
The deceased are Md Enam (45) and his nephew Md Shahid (18).

Chairman of Faitang Union Parishad Jalal Uddin said Enam and Shahid cultivated paddy in ‘Bengali Para’ of Faitang Union.
They used live in a bamboo house built on a tree to guard their crops .
A streak of lightning struck them there around 11 pm, leaving them dead on the spot.

At the same time, three cows of Basukumar Dey, a resident of Merakhola Hindu Para in Lama Sadar Union of the upazila and one cow of Abdur Rahman, a resident of Merakhola Muslim Para died by the lightning strike, he added.
Officer-in-charge of Lama police station Mohammad Alamgir said the bodies of the deceased were recovered and handed over to their relatives.
Man killed in elephant attack in Chattogram
A 38-year-old man was killed by a wild elephant at Madhyam Guapanchak village in Anwara upazila of Chattogram district, police said on Monday.
SM Didarul Islam, officer-in-charge of Anwara Police Station, said the man was mentally retarded and the wild elephant trampled him to death on Sunday night while he was roaming around the area.

However, police are investigating the incident.
At least 17 people died while 25 others had been injured in attacks by wild elephants in the upazila in the past two years. Besides, a number of houses were damaged during this period.

Journo’s father killed in Dhaka road accident
An elderly man returning home was run over by a speeding microbus in the city’s Rayerbagh area on Friday night, police said.
The deceased was identified as Swapan Tabriz, 65, father of Md Samsuddin Ahmed Mishu, a journalist with a local daily.

According to the victim's family, Swapan went to a relative's house in Basabo around noon on Friday. He met with the accident on his way back home around 8 pm in the Rayerbagh area where he lived.
Jatrabari Police Station SI Mohammad Khaleq said the Chittagong-bound microbus ran over Swapan after its driver lost control of the speeding vehicle.

"Efforts are on to nab the driver of the killer vehicle," he said.
3 killed by lightning strike in Jamalpur
Three people in Jamalpur’s Islampur upazila were killed by lightning strike.on Sunday afternoon
The incident occurred at around 3 pm in the Kandarchar village of the upazila.

The deceased were identified as Sundar Ali Sarder, 65, son of Bhola Sarder; his grandson Rafiq Sarder, 14, and Mosharraf Hossain, 25, son of Mofazzal Hossain, all from Kandarchar.
It was learned that they were working in the field when they were struck by a thunderbolt, and Sundar Ali died on the spot.

Critically injured Rafiq died at Kandarchar Hospital Complex, and Mosharraf was referred to Jamalpur Sadar Hospital but died on the way there, according to the OC of Islampur Police Station Mazedur Rahman.
Ex-DU prof dies as train rams car in Gazipur
A retired Dhaka University professor was killed while his wife and driver were injured when a train hit their car at an unmanned level crossing in Kaliganj upazila of Gazipur on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Abdur Rahim Khan, 72, a resident of NAM Garden Officers Quarters in Mirpur.
The accident occurred around 6pm when the car in which the three were travelling fell into a roadside ditch after being hit by the Chattogram-bound Subarna Express in the Nalchata area.
The impact of the collision was such that Abdur died on the spot.

His wife Diljuara Khanam (63) and their driver Soleman Mia, 32, of Barishal district, sustained injuries and were rushed to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex, from where they were shifted to Dhaka for better treatment, said Pradeep Kumar Saha, sub-inspector at Kaliganj Police Station.
The former DU professor and his wife were heading towards Dhaka’s Mirpur in their private car from Tangail district when the accident occurred.

His body has been sent to Narsingdi General Hospital morgue for an autopsy, the police officer said.
Panchagarh: 1 killed, 4 injured as lightning strikes tea stall
A 30-year-old man was killed and four others were injured after lightning struck a tea stall in Atwari upazila of Panchagarh on Monday night.
The deceased was identified as Ranjit Barman, son of Bhujen Barman, a resident of the Roseya Durga Mandir area of the upazila's Randhanagar union.

The injured have been identified as Ganesh, 45, Kulin, 45, Paritosh, 32, and Bhabesh, 55, of the same area.
Police said that the five were having tea at the roadside stall in the Durga Mandir area in the night when they were struck by a bolt of lightning during heavy rains.
The five were immediately rushed to Atwari Upazila Health Complex by local residents, where doctors declared Ranjit dead on arrival.

Bhabesh was subsequently shifted to Thakurgaon Adhunik Sadar Hospital as his condition deteriorated.
Md Ijaruddin, officer-in-charge of Atwari police station, said the other three injured are currently undergoing treatment at the upazila health complex.
Three killed in Netrakona road crash
Three people were killed and two others injured when a pickup van crashed into a stationary truck on the Netrakona-Mymensingh highway of Sadar upazila in the early hours of Saturday.
The deceased were identified as Rony Mia, 20, son of Sabuj Mia, Tofazzal Mia, 1 4, son of Shafiqul Islam of Dharmapasha upazila in Sunamganj district, and Abu Chan Mia, 28 of Netrakona.
Police said the accident occurred at 2.45am when the Gazipur-bound fish-laden pickup van coming from Sunamganj rammed the sand-laden truck parked along the highway in Chalissha Bagra Bazar of Sadar upazila.
"The crash was the result of the van driver losing control of the speeding vehicle. While two fish traders were killed on the spot, three others sustained injuries," said Khandaker Shaker Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Netrakona Model Police Station.
The injured were taken to Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital, where Chan Mia was declared dead on arrival. "A probe has been ordered into the accident," the OC said.
Two killed, one injured in Jamalpur train robbery
Two youths died and another sustained injuries after being allegedly attacked by a gang of robbers on a Dewanganj-bound train on Thursday night.
The deceased were identified as Md Nahid Hasan (24) and Sagar (25). The injured passenger, Rubel (22), is recuperating at Jamalpur Sadar Hospital.
Police said the trio came under attack when they tried to nab the robbers. The robbers had climbed on top of the train and started robbing passengers travelling on the roof.

Faruq, who was also travelling on the train top, said as soon as the train left Gafargaon station, four to five robbers attacked the passengers sitting on the roof with knives.
"They snatched my cellphone,” he said.
Sub-inspector Sohel Rana of Jamalpur railway police station said the passengers were attacked by some muggers.

Around 10 pm when the train reached Jamalpur station, police rushed the three severely injured passengers to Sadar Hospital. Two of them were, however, declared dead on arrival.
The bodies were sent for post-mortem. "Efforts are on to nab the robbers," Sohel said.
Lightning kills two in Kurigram
Two persons were killed and another one sustained injuries after being struck by lightning at Karaibarishal in Chilmari upazila of Kurigram district on Friday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Jhangir Alam, 30, son of Tamsher Ali, and Al Amin, both residents of the upazila.
Abu Taleb Sarkar, chairman of Ashtamir Char in the upazila, said that lightning struck the three when they were washing rotten jute in a water body in the area around 3 pm.

"While Jhangir and Tamsher died on the spot, Samad sustained injuries and was rushed to a local hospital for treatment," he added.
Lightning in Bangladesh
Lightning strike has turned into one of the deadliest natural disasters in Bangladesh, claiming over 200 lives every year.
According to the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, 2,164 people died in lightning strikes in the country from 2011 to 2020.
At least 216 people die every year on an average in lightning strikes, more than by floods, cyclones and other natural calamities.

Experts say that about 70 percent of the total lightning strikes usually occur between April and June, and advise everyone to move with caution during this time.
Mob beats man to death suspecting him of being a thief
Local people beat a man to death suspecting him of being a thief at Sabujbagh in Dhaka on Thursday night.
Police said they rescued Hridoy, 27, in a critical condition as local people thrashed him as they suspected him to be a thief.
He was taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital where doctors announced him dead around 3:30 am on Friday.
Anwar Hossain, a sub-inspector of Sabujbagh Police Station, said the locals claimed that they beat the man as he was caught while stealing in the area.
