The death toll from coronavirus in Bangladesh rose to 2,096 on Monday as health authorities confirmed 44 more casualties in a span of 24 hours.
Freedom fighter dies from coronavirus in Sherpur
Freedom Fighter and former Nalitabari municipality mayor Abdul Halim Ukil died of Covid-19 on Sunday night. He was 67.
Abdul Halim, a member of district Awami League executive committee, was diagnosed with coronavirus on June 25 and undergoing treatment at Bangladesh Kuwait Maitree Hospital in the capital where he breathed his last around 10:40pm, according to family sources.
He is survived by wife, one daughter and one son.
According to Sherpur civil surgeon office, so far total three people died from coronavirus in the district.
In his long political career, Abdul Halim, was also the first elected municipal chairman. He also served as a UP chairman and was the president of Nalitabari Upazila Awami League.
India reports record one-day spike of 24,912 Covid cases
India on Sunday registered a record daily number of coronavirus cases since the first case was confirmed on January 30.
India's health ministry reported 24,912 cases and 613 deaths in 24 hours, the biggest daily spike in a day.
Sunday’s fresh cases crossed record highs on each of the past four days, starting with 22,045 infections reported on July 2.
Global Covid-19 infections top 11.4 mn
The confirmed coronavirus cases reached 11,409,805 globally with 533,684 deaths and more than 6.1 million recoveries as of Monday morning.
According to the latest tally from Johns Hopkins University, the worst-hit US has registered 2,880,130 confirmed cases with 129,906 fatalities.
Besides, Brazil, which has come up to the second position, recorded 64,867 deaths and 1, 603,055 confirmed cases while Russia counted the third highest Covid-19 cases- 680,283 till date.
Meanwhile, India registered a record daily number of 24,912 cases on Sunday, the
biggest daily spike since the first coronavirus detection in the country.
Coronavirus cases were first reported in China in December last year.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the coronavirus crisis a pandemic on March 11.

Another 2,738 new patients were diagnosed with coronavirus during the period, raising the total number to 1,62,417.
The daily infection rate on Sunday was recorded 19.57 percent.
Additional Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Prof Dr Nasima Sultana came up with the disclosure at its daily health bulletin.
