Covid death toll reaches 100 in Thakurgaon
The Covid-19 death toll reached 100 in Thakurgaon on Tuesday, with five more people succumbing to the fatal virus in the past 24 hours.
Besides, the district saw 114 fresh cases during this period, with a positivity rate of 42.87 %. The new cases were detected after testing 266 samples, officials said.

Thakurgaon Sadar saw the maximum transmission, with 64 out of the 114 new cases being from this area, civil surgeon Dr Md Mahfuzur Rahman told UNB.
The total Covid-19 cases reached 3,979 with the new cases, he said. Of them, 2474 have already recovered.

On the other hand, the district administration has been working hard to make the nationwide stringent lockdown a success in Thakurgaon.
Md Mahbubur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner of the district, said, "As some people are reluctant to follow the restrictions, mobile courts conducted across Thakurgaon have collected a fine of Tk 27,500 from 36 violators."
Nilgai dies trying to escape capture by villagers in Thakurgaon
A nilgai, the largest Asian antelope that was thought to be extinct in Bangladesh, was killed Friday while trying to escaping from villagers in Dharmagarh Muktar Basti area of Thakurgaon’s Ranishankail upazila.
Locals identified a nilgai in the area and tried to capture it. They chased it through the village.
At one point the nilgai jumped through the window of an under-construction house where it fell unconscious and soon died.
According to the locals, the nilgai had been seen roaming in the area for several days.
It was given first aid by the local veterinarian but it did not survive.

Upon information, acting Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Pritam Saha went to the spot.
He said the nilgai probably had a panic attack after being chased and died.
“We will talk to the Upazila Livestock and Forestry Department and take necessary legal steps. An autopsy will be done if necessary," he said.
In February, the BGB rescued an injured nilgai from the villagers who had captured it and was preparing to slaughter for its meat in the Baliadangi upazila.
BGB members rescued the nilgai and took it to Kantivita camp where the veterinary surgeon provided necessary treatment.

Besides, in September 2016, a nilgai was rescued from the side of Jaduar village in Ranishankail upazila of Thakurgaon. Local fishermen saw the nilgai along the Kulik River near Indian border and captured it.
The local administration, in collaboration with the forest department officials, rescued the nilgai and took it to Ramsagar National Park in Dinajpur.

Over 100 contract Covid in Thakurgaon, two more die
Amid the strict restrictions imposed to break the chain of infection in the district, some 100 more people have tested positive for Covid in 24 hours. Two more persons have also died of Covid, health officials said Friday.
A 75-year-old man succumbed to coronavirus at a hospital in Pirganj, a 45-year-old woman died at a medical facility in Ranishankail, according to officials.
On the other hand, 101 new cases were detected after testing 209 samples on Thursday, raising the district’s positivity rate to 48.32%, according to the district’s health division.

Of them, 57 people are fom Sadar upazila, 11 from RaniShankail, 12 from Baliadangi, 14 from Pirganj and seven are from Haripur, said Civil Surgeon Dr Mahfuzar Rahman Sarkar.
With the new numbers, the district’s Covid caseload reached 2,821 and the death toll 65, said the Civil Surgeon.
Some 1,712 people have so far recovered from Covid in the district.

Thakurgaon records highest single-day rise in Covid cases at 109
Thakurgaon logged 109 fresh Covid cases in the past 24 hours till Thursday night, the district's highest single-day spike this year.
The new infections were detected after testing 334 samples, said civil surgeon Dr Mahfuzar Rahman Sarkar. "The new cases have pushed up the district’s positivity rate to 32.63%," he said.

While 64 people tested positive for Covid after testing samples at M Abdur Rahim Medical College in Dinajpur, Communicable Disease Control Centre, Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital, and the upazila hospital, the remaining cases were confirmed by the National Institute of Laboratory Medicine and Referral Center Dhaka, the civil surgeon said.
So far, some 2266 people in Thakurgaon have been infected with the virus, while 51 have died of Covid.

Meanwhile, the district administration on Thursday ordered the closure of all cattle markets in Thakurgaon for a week to contain the spread of coronavirus.
Also the district and upazila authorities have imposed strict restrictions such as the closure of all shops in the district by 5pm to break the chain of Covid transmission.
Thakurgaon: Minor couple ends life after families reject affair
A minor couple in Thakurgaon's Khalipur village allegedly ended their lives by consuming poison after their families rejected their marriage proposal.

The deceased were identified as Jatan Chandra Singha, 18, son of Debendra Chandra Sing, and Sumi Bala, the 14-year-old daughter of Jatin Chandra of Baliadangi upazila.
According to the relatives of the deceased, Shumi and Jatan had an affair but their families were opposed to the relationship as both of them were distant cousins and minors.

On Tuesday, the two took the extreme step after their families again disapproved of their relationship, police said. They were taken to a local hospital, where doctors declared them dead on arrival.

A case of unnatural death has been filed in connection with the suicides at the local police station, an official said.
Covid cases rising in Thakurgaon; 17 more detected
Seventeen more people have been diagnosed with coronavirus in Thakurgaon district in the past 24 hours till Sunday morning, showing a sharp rise in the number of Covid-19 cases.
Civil Surgeon Dr Mahfuzar Rahman said 17 people were found infected with the virus as per reports came from M Abdur Rahim Medical College, Dinajpur CDC, Sadar Hospital and upazila hospitals.

So far, 1,742 people have been found infected with the virus in the district. Of them, 1,575 people have recovered.
The death toll from the virus reached 38 in the district.
Deputy Commissioner of Thakurgaon Dr KM Kamruzzaman Selim said, “The district has been experiencing a rise in Covid-19 cases for the last several days and most of the Covid-19 cases have been reported from Baliadangi upazila, a frontier area.”

According to sources at the Civil Surgeon office, three people were found infected with Covid-19 on May 29, seven on May 30, eight on May 31, 17 on June 2, 18 on June 3, two on June 4 and 17 on June 5.
Referring to the Indian variant of coronavirus, Dr Mahfuzar, said, “No Indian returnee has been found in the district so far.”
Talking about the health system in the district, the Civil Surgeon said a 50-bed corona unit has already been opened at Sadar Hospital while isolation wards at upazila health complexes have been prepared for treating Covid patients.

Earlier, on Thursday, the border areas of Thakurgaon were sealed off in the wake of a sudden spike in Covid-19 cases in the district, officials said.
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel have been asked to step up vigil along the border with India to prevent the spread of the Indian Covid-19 variant, said Lt Col Md Maksud, the commanding officer of BGB-50 Thakurgaon Battalion.
Thakurgaon seals border areas to contain Covid
The border areas of Thakurgaon have been sealed off in the wake of a sudden spike in Covid-19 cases in the district, officials said on Thursday.
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel have been asked to step up vigil along the border with neighbouring India to prevent the spread of the Indian Covid-19 variant in this country, according to Lt Colonel Md Maksud, the commanding officer of BGB-50 Thakurgaon Battalion.

Deputy Commissioner KM Kamruzzaman said the bordering areas have been sealed off so as to prevent the transmission of the Indian variant of Covid-19.
According to sources, as many as 36 people in the district tested positive for Covid-19 between May 28 and June 2.
Thakurgaon Civil Surgeon Dr Mahfuzar Rahman Sarkar said that 1,705 people have tested positive for Covid-19 to date, and of them, 1,570 people have recovered.

Some 36 people have died so far from the virus in the district.
Already a 50-bed corona unit has been opened at Sadar Hospital in the district and an isolation ward at upazila health complex has been prepared for treating Covid-19 patients, he said.
Meanwhile, sources said a liquid oxygen plant set up at Sadar Hospital five months ago is yet to be made operational due to a shortage of manpower.
However, health authorities said the oxygen plant will start functioning from this month only.

"A ventilator is also lying unused at Sadar Hospital due to a lack of skilled manpower," said Dr Nadirul Aziz Chapal, a supervisor at the hospital.
"If the Indian Covid variant is detected here, it would be really tough for us to tackle the situation," he said.
Union Parishad member beats old man for demanding relief
A 65-year-old man was beaten up by a Union Parishad member for demanding relief in Thakurgaon.
The incident took place at 20 Ruhia West Union on Wednesday night.
Islam Uddin, the victim, said he was assaulted by UP member Bishwanath. Locals said that Islam went in front of the UP building and said he never received any support from the government despite being poor and old.
He said the government is providing assistance but whenever he asked for relief, the UP member denied receiving any.
Hearing this, local village police guard Bolai Chandra informed the matter to UP member Bishwanath.
Bishwanath came to the spot and beat Islam and his son mercilessly.
Victim Islam said the assault was unprovoked. “UP member Bishwanath beat my son too as he came to save me,” said Islam.
When asked, UP Member Bishwanath said the village police told him over the phone that Islam was badmouthing him and the chairman.
“When I informed the chairman, he told me to slap Islam,” he said.
UP Chairman Anil Kumar Sen said he was unaware of the incident.
Ruhia Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge Chitta Ranjan Ray said, “We've been informed about the UP member beating an old man. The matter will be resolved locally.”
Nor’wester lashes across the country; 1 killed
A fisherman was killed at Ulipur Upazila in Kurigram as a nor'wester lashed across the country on Friday night into early hours of Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Momir Uddin, 42.
Police and local sources said a tree crushed Momir near Shyampur Kumar Para area as he was returning from Bazar amid the storm.
Hearing his cries locals rescued him and rushed to Upazila Health Complex, where the doctor announced him dead.

Ulipur police station’s Officer-in-Charge confirmed the incident.
Nor'wester also caused immense damage in several districts of the country including Panchagarh, Thakurgaon and Bhola.
In Panchagarh, nor'wester hit with heavy rain and wind around 9pm on Friday.
Moreover, hailstorm was seen in some places of the district.

The Meteorological office recorded 47 Km per hour velocity of the wind during the storm which caused a long power cut in the district.
Many houses and crops were destroyed during this time.
Ferry services were suspended for a long time at Ilisha Ferry Ghat in Bhola due to the storm.
Many vehicles were stranded on both sides of the ghat due to this.

On the other hand, a partial part of a boat carrying passengers sank at Dhal Char Union under Charfashion Upazila because of the storm.
However, no casualties were reported.
Miscreants torch idol at Hindu temple in Thakurgaon
Tension prevailed in Uttargaon village of Thakurgaon's Ranisankail upazila after some miscreants torched an idol of Hindu goddess Kali at a temple on Thursday night.
