IBBL Mymensingh holds Shariah compliance webinar
Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited (IBBL) Mymensingh recently organised the webinar "Compliance of Shari'ah in Banking Operations."
Professor Qazi Shahidul Alam, director of IBBL, spoke at the webinar as chief guest.
Mohiuddin Rabbani, a member of the Shariah supervisory committee of the bank, was the key speaker at the programme.
Md Shamsuddoha, executive vice-president of the Shariah secretariat, also spoke.
Md Anisul Haque, head of Mymensingh zone, and Md Khalilur Rahman, senior vice-president of IBBL, were present.
IBBL is a joint venture public limited company engaged in commercial banking business based on Islamic Shariah. It is listed on the Dhaka Stock Exchange and Chittagong Stock Exchange.

Mohammed Monirul Moula, managing director and chief executive officer, presided over the function. Dr Mohammad Gias Uddin Talukder, chairman of IBBL Shariah Supervisory Committee, addressed it as chief discussant.
Muhammad Qaisar Ali, additional managing director of the bank, and Professor Mohammad Abdus Samad, member secretary of Shariah Supervisory Committee, addressed the programme as special guests.
Md Mostafizur Rahman Siddiquee, deputy managing director, delivered the welcome speech and Md Shamsuddoha, executive vice-president, discussed the topic, according to a media statement.

Webinar on sexual, gender-based violence held
Bonhishikha and Women with Disabilities Development Foundation (WDDF) with support from International Women’s Rights Action Watch Asia Pacific (IWRAW AP) hosted an online discussion session on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) on Monday marking the official launching of the new project named Women Gaining Ground (WGG).
Women Gaining Ground is a new Global South-led five-year project led by CREA, Akili Dada and IWRAW AP in five priority countries- Bangladesh, India, Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda.
In Bangladesh, it is implemented by three strategic partners: Bonhishikha, WDDF and Naripokkho, said a media release.
Through this project, they aim to eliminate sexual and gender-based violence by supporting the leadership, decision-making, and political participation of young women, women with disabilities, and other marginalized communities.
Representatives from the consortium partners, embassies in Bangladesh, UN bodies, stakeholders, development partners, and project partners and participants were present during the event.
The event started with a brief presentation on the Women Gaining Ground project by Samina Yasmin, Programmes Coordinator of Bonhishikha.
Mushfiqua Satiar, Senior Policy Adviser -SRHR and Gender, Embassy of the Netherlands in Bangladesh, delivered welcome remarks.
It was followed by speeches by Audrey Lee from IWRAW AP and Babita Sinha from CREA.

Ashrafun Nahar Misti, Executive Director of WDDF gave a presentation on the current state of SGVB on women with disabilities in the workplace where she discussed how these women face multifold discrimination and violence for their disabilities at home and in their workplace.
Another keynote speaker, Taslima Yasmin, Associate Professor, Department of Law, Dhaka University reflected on the current legal provisions and gaps in dealing with SGBV issues in workplaces.
She emphasized on how the laws and policies are still archaic and are not always applicable to address such issues.
The last keynote speaker was Tasaffy Hossain, Founder and Managing Partner of Bonhishikha, who talked about how we would address SGBV through WGG project to reach their objectives.
Nasima Begum, President of National Council of Disabled Women and newly elected Union Parishad Member of Mithapukur in Rangpur, delivered the closing remarks urging all to continue the conversation and collaboration to ensure everyone’s equal rights and access.
Keep provision for creating entrepreneurs in upcoming national budget: Webinar
The upcoming national budget should include a special programme to encourage new initiatives and create more entrepreneurs, speakers at a webinar said on Wednesday.
They also underlined the need for a special incentive or tax exemption facility of at least five to eight years for new entrepreneurs so educated youths can build a career in business.
Prof Dr Muhammad Mahboob Ali, Programme coordinator, Department of Entrepreneurship Economic, at Dhaka School of Economics, said both state-owned and private sector banks have to come forward with soft credit for new young entrepreneurs.
He suggested designating a day as ‘Entrepreneurship Day’ to be observed specially in educational institutions to inspire learners to take up innovative career.

Prof Dr Anisul M.Islam, University of Houston, Texas ,USA joined the webinar virtually as the chief guest, Prof Dr Susanta Kumar Mishra, School of Management, Centurion University of Technology & Management, Bhubaneswar, India and Prof Dr Parul, Institute of Management & Technology, Faridabad, India took part in the program as special guests.
Prof Islam called for ensuring good governance for expansion of enterprising activities in Bangladesh, which had been applied in the USA for developing entrepreneurship.
Without developing entrepreneurship Bangladesh cannot make employment for its huge educated population and would remain deprived of the skilled service of the population if they may migrate to developed countries, he said.
Sara Tasneem, assistant professor and Rehana pervin of DScE, Dr. Nadia Binte Amin, Umman Nahar Azmee and Md.Mahbubur Rahman, president and secretary of Entrepreneurial Economists, among others, spoke at the webinar.
Lightshore’s webinar aims to accelerate women's participation in IT Sector
Lightshore Foundation, BITM jointly organized a virtual meeting titled 'Girls in ICT Day” focusing on accelerating Women's Involvement in the IT Sector.
The mediators participated in an engaging discussion on challenges of women’s participation in the IT sector at the event moderated by Tanzila Munia, a member of the Lightshore Foundation.
Among the mediators were Emrajina Islam, Md. Shahriar Hossain, Nazia Hasan, Shubhashis Roy, ABM Jabed Sultan Piyas, Talukdar Mohammad Sabbir. The Zoom discussion was attended by about 60 women and youth from across the country.

According to the organizers, at present, about 25 percent of female students are studying information technology at the university level.
According to government estimates, only 12 percent of women work in information technology in the workplace.
Another survey by Bangladesh Open Source Network found that only 1 percent of female students studying information technology are interested in taking up programming as a career in the future.

Emrajina Islam, Co-Founder of Emrajina Technologies said,” It's really a lot of hassle to do something as a girl in Bangladesh. However, if you have the desire, enthusiasm,smartness and a little bit of support from the family, it is very much possible. At my company, Emarajina Technologies, girls seem to work more honestly and harder than the boys. Dedication for work is also seen more in girls than in boys when they are provided a comfort zone.”
ABM Jabed Sultan Piyas, Head of Business of daily Prothom Alo, said “In Prothom Alo , women always get priority. A woman-friendly atmosphere has always existed in the media of Bangladesh. And you would be happy to know that there is a policy to follow while joining at Prothom Alo that all male colleagues need to read a book on feminism and strictly adhere to it”.

Md. Shahriar Hossain Jisan, National Consultant of A2I ICT Division said “. The government has zero tolerance for harassment of girls on online platforms. However, support from the law can be obtained only when a written GD is filed. So we have to make these allegations with courage. And online careers are global, they have no boundaries. The range of online careers is much higher, especially for girls in this sector. Payment is also much higher, you can do this by developing your own skills.”
Shubhashis Roy, Head of Business of The Daily Star said, “Journalists now have to work and survive with the knowledge of ICT whether it is a boy or a girl. We are also moving forward along the path of digital Bangladesh. We need more girls in ICT, we have to bring equality of opportunity. It is necessary to create awareness in the society, more initiatives are needed from the government. Girls in ICT are essential to the future survival of the economy.”
Nazia Hasan, Head of Design at Design & API said, “We need a big change in the field of education, it should start from the very beginning. We have to try to create curiosity in children from an early age. Girls need to be encouraged to enter the ICT sector through various competitions.”

Talukdar Mohammad Sabbir, Director & CEO – BITM said, “At the beginning of the BITM course, the participation of girls was almost negligible. Yet that is not too much, about 15-20%. Probably a factor as to why they're doing so poorly. Boys are more likely to be seen in ICT sector courses, which is not desirable at all. Overall, where more than 40% of the girls should be present, more than 20% of us have never come here as participants, which is sad.”
Lightshow co-founder Sultana Razia said if women's participation in the ICT sector is not increased, women will lag behind in terms of empowerment. Lightshow will conduct training on STEMs, workshops on STEMs, hackathon on ARCTs and raising awareness on increasing ICT participation of women.

Speakers praise BB’s role in financial inclusion
Speakers at a webinar have praised the role of Bangladesh Bank (BB) for enhancing financial inclusion and women's access to finance in Bangladesh in different dimensions.
They said that the central bank has brought non-government organizations (NGOs), Financial Institutions (FIs) which are working in the rural areas with the marginal people into the net of financial coverage.
A large number of women and unbanked population (who do not use or do not have access to any traditional financial services) were brought under financial access facilities, allowing those who were unable to avail lending facility from banks due to lack of documents to get loans, the speakers said.

The speakers came up with the remarks while speaking at a webinar on 'Financial Inclusion in Bangladesh with different dimensions' organized by Entrepreneurial Economists club of Dhaka School of Economics, held on Saturday.

Webinar underlines digital innovation to boost agro production
Speakers at a webinar has underlined digital innovation and adaptation to aware farmers about agriculture, crops varieties, seed and fertilizer to boost agro production.
The webinar titled ‘needs of digital innovation and leadership to raise technical literacy growing agriculture- food production’ was organized by Entrepreneurial Economists club (EEC), an organization of Dhaka School of Economics on Wednesday.
The speakers said the development of digital platforms with service and consultation on different varieties of crops and the yield can be reached in rural and remote areas through digital innovation.

Multi-use of digital innovation is needed for agro-products marketing as well as connecting businesses and farmers, they said.
According to them, the digital economy is well suited to the Bangladesh economy.

He said that every country should move to digital transformation so that everything can function smoothly.

MoFA to celebrate Digital Bangladesh Day-2021 at home, abroad
Digital Bangladesh Day-2021 is set to be celebrated on December 12 through various programmes across the country and Bangladesh Missions abroad.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has undertaken an ambitious set of ICT reforms and application building, complementing the Digital Bangladesh initiative of the government.

The day is of special significance to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry has arranged a set of programmes to celebrate the 5th “The Digital Bangladesh Day-2021.”
The programmes will include a debate competition, an essay writing competition on various aspects of digital Bangladesh, a global 50-word short story contest on the Bangladesh dream and a 4IR themed webinar on December 12, said MoFA on Wednesday.

Women suffer more violence from jobless men staying home: Webinar
Men’s long stay at home for lack of employment is one of the reasons why violence against women is increasing in Bangladesh, a webinar was told on Monday.
Speakers at the webinar identified the other factors for which women are subjected to violence as decline of income, limited judicial activities and less willpower to file case.
The webinar on `Analysis of Violence Against Women and Action by JNNPF’ was organised by Jatio Nari Nirjatan Protirodh Forum (JNNPF) in association with ActionAid Bangladesh.
The speakers said incidents of torture, oppression and rape of women and children are on the rise in the country. Violence against women and children has been alarming during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the webinar, JNNPF, a platform of 26 human rights organisations, claimed that 609 cases of domestic violence, 42 cases of rape, 239 cases of torture for dowry and 112 cases of child marriage were reported from 20 districts of the country during January to October this year, according to a press release.

In addition, a total of 1379 complaints were registered including 72 polygamous marriages, 73 divorces, 1 murder and 5 suicides, 132 marital disorder and 94 other incidents.
However, 863 cases have been settled and 422 cases are pending out of 1369 cases.
The JNNPF called for preventing and alleviating violence against women and ensure the safety of women by forming committees at all levels starting from the union level.
In addition to building a resistance movement, they called for a positive role of the administration, speedy judicial action, and the formation of a larger national coalition on the issue of prevention of violence against women and children.
Country Director of ActionAid Bangladesh Farah Kabir said that working together can prevent all forms of violence including violence against women.
