Sheikh Kamal 2nd Bangladesh Youth Games district phase begins in Chattogram
The second phase of the Sheikh Kamal 2nd Bangladesh Youth Games 2023 began Monday in the port city like elsewhere in the country.
Chattogram Metropolitan Police Commissioner Krishna Pada Roy inaugurated the district-level round at the MA Aziz Stadium in Chattogram in the morning. Former Chattogram City Corporation mayor AJM Nasir Uddin was also present.
Eight athletics events and a handball competition were held on the opening day.
Home team Chattogram beat Bandarban 27-22 in the final of the handball competition at the MA Aziz Stadium.

Around 700 boys and girls aged under 17, who qualified from the upazila-level, are competing in 10 disciplines of sports in the inter-district competitions, which will continue till January 22.
The final round of the Games will be held in Dhaka from February 26 to March 4.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the final phase of the meet on February 26 at the Army Stadium in Banani.
More than 50,000 athletes are competing in 24 disciplines of sports this year, with the new inclusion of cycling, gymnastics and rugby.

In 2018, around 50,000 athletes took part in the first Youth Games in 21 disciplines of sports.
BNP-police clash leaves 12 injured in Chattogram
At least 12 people, including 5 cops, were injured as the activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and police locked in a clash in the Kazir Dewri area of Chattogram on Monday.
BNP's Chattogram unit arranged a protest rally in front of the party office at Nasiman Bhaban on Monday to press home its 10-point demand and to protest electricity price hike.
When BNP leaders and activists were going to join the rally around 3:30pm, police charged with batons to disperse them, triggering the clash, said Idris Ali, former organising secretary of Chattogram unit BNP.
At least 7-8 BNP activists were injured as police baton-charged and fired shots, said the BNP leader.

However, Mostafizur Rahman, deputy commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (South), said that police made arrangements for a peaceful rally but the BNP men attacked the police, leaving 5 policemen injured.
The BNP activists also set a police motorcycle on fire and vandalised several shops in the area during the clash, he added.
Later, additional police force rushed to the spot and fired tear gas shells to bring the situation under control.

So far 20 people have been arrested, added the officer.
Man missing after slaughtering wife in Chattogram
Police are looking for a man who has been missing since his wife's body was found in Chattogram's Halishahar.
Mohammad Jamin, a Bhangari businessman, is believed to have slaughtered his wife Rabeya Khatun, 50, at their rented house on Saturday evening.
Police said they suspect a marital feud led to the murder.
Locals said Rabeya and her husband Jamin used to live in a rented tin shed house on Road-4 of the Panir Tank area of the city.
Jamin had an altercation with his wife around 7:30pm. At one stage, Jamin slit Rabeya's throat with a sharp weapon and fled.
Rabeya was able to make it to the street outside her home with her slit-throat.
Although locals took her to a local hospital, she succumbed to her injuries there.
“We’re trying to find out the reason behind this murder and arrest the suspect,” said Md Zahir Uddin, officer-in-charge of Halishahar police station.
A murder case will be lodged in this regard, added the OC.

Drizzles likely in 8 divisions: BMD
The weather department has predicted drizzles in parts of the country in 24 hours, starting from 9am today.
“Weather may remain mainly dry with partly cloudy skies over the country, with chances of drizzles at one or two places over Khulna, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions,” Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said in its bulletin.
Moderate to thick fog may occur over the riverbasins and adjoining areas and light to moderate fog may occur elsewhere over the country during midnight to morning and it may continue till noon at places.

A mild to moderate cold wave is sweeping over Rangpur division and the districts of Noagaon and Moulvibazar and it may abate from some places.
Night temperature may rise slightly and day temperature may fall slightly over the country.
The lowest temperature in the country was recorded at 6.1 degree Celsius in Tetulia today while the highest temperature was recorded at 29.6 degree Celsius in Teknaf of Chattogram division.
Shipbreaking worker falls to death in Chattogram's Sitakunda
A 24-year-old shipbreaking worker died after falling off a ship in Chattogram's Sitakunda Thursday night, police said.
The deceased was identified as Abdul Rahim Tushar from Kurigram.

Tushar fell off the ship while working on it at Tahsin Shipbreaking Yard in Sonaichhari union near the Bay of Bengal, Md Tofail Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Sitakunda Model Police Station, said.
"Tushar was rushed to Chattogram Medical College Hospital with a critical head injury. He was declared dead at the hospital at 10pm," Tofail added.
Five of a family charred to death in Chattogram
Five members of a family, including two children, who were asleep in their house, were found charred to death in Rangunia early Friday, police said.
The dead were identified as Kangal Boshak, 70, Lolita Boshak, 60, Lucky Boshak, 32, Saraswati Boshak, 4, and Sowrabh Boshak, 12.

Another member of the family, Khokon Boshak, 42, was rushed to Chittagong Medical College in a critical condition.
The fire broke out and engulfed the house of Abdul Malek at the Mohajonpara area of Parua union around 2am.
Abdul Hamid Mia, deputy assistant director of Chattogram fire service, said firefighters reached the spot after getting the information and they could tame the flames around 4am.
An accidental fire outbreak was suspected to be the reason for the accident.

However, Hamid said the exact reasons for the fire mishap and the extent of damage could not immediately be confirmed.
Abu Bakar, sub-inspector of Rangunia Police Station, said: "The bodies of five members of the family were brought to the police station in the morning."
Shoe factory catches fire in Ctg
A fire broke out in a shoe factory on the sixth floor of Nurpur Market in the port city’s New Market area on Thursday afternoon.
The blaze erupted in the factory around 3.30pm. There are some other markets in the adjacent areas.

Fazlul Quader, control room operator at Agrabad Fire Service and Civil Denfence Station, said on information eight firefighting units rushed to the spot and are working to tame it.
Two killed by miscreants in Chattogram
Two persons were killed by miscreants in two separate locations in Chattogram’s Banshkhali and Rangunia upazilas on Tuesday night.
The victims were identified as Muzahid, 32, son of Mohammad Harun of Sharafbhata of Rangunia upazila, and Dudu Mia, 38, of Mithapukur upazila of Rangpur district.
Abdul Monaf, a member of Sahrafbhata union perished (UP), said Muzahid along with six others were injured around 7 pm on Tuesday when a group of miscreants came to the house of one Ajhar Mia to attack Muzahid’s brother Didar following an old enmity and opened fired. At that time, locals came forward and tried to hold the miscreants but they managed to flee the scene after stabbing some of them.

The injured were first rushed to the Rangunia Upazila Health Complex and later were shifted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH). Muzahid died while undergoing treatment at the CMCH around 9 pm, he added.
Alauddin Talukdar, assistant sub-inspector of CMCH police camp, said a youth named Muzahid with bullet injuries was taken to the Chattogrtam Medical College Hospital from Rangunia. He died while undergoing treatment at the hospital around 9:30 pm. Also, six others injured in the incident were taking treatment in different wards of the hospital.

Meanwhile, a sales representative named Dudu Mia was killed by miscreants when he was returning home after collecting his company’s money at the Banshkhali upazila of the district.
Kamal Uddin, officer-in-charge of Banshkhali police station, said, a group of miscreants stabbed Dudu Mia when he was returning home after collecting his company’s money from different shops of Gondamara Bazar of the Banshkhali upazila around 8:30 pm, leaving him injured.
Local people along with police took him to the Banshkhali Upazila Health Complex but he died there while undergoing treatment.
Chattogram bank fire tamed after two hours
A fire that quickly tore through a branch of Eastern Bank in the port city's Halishahar area on Friday afternoon was brought under control after nearly two hours, the authorities said.
Anisur Rahman, deputy director at the fire service and civil defence department Chattogram, said the blaze began at the bank near the Halishahar Excess Road at 12pm.

On information, seven firefighting units responded to the fire and the responders could tame the flames at 1.45pm, he said.
The reasons for the fire mishap and the extent of damage could not immediately be confirmed, Anisur added.
Teen girl dies after truck overturns in Ctg
A 15-year-old girl was killed after a truck overturned on Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Sitakunda upazila of Chattogram early Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Priya Rani Rishi, a resident of Sitakunda railway station area. She used to work at a shoe factory in Bashbaria union.

The accident occurred around 12:30am when a speeding truck overturned on the highway by-pass.
Priya, who was on her way back home, was crushed under the truck, said Shahadat Hossain, inspector of Kumira Highway police outpost.
