Khaleda needs to go abroad for treatment: Fakhrul
Stating that their party chairperson Khaleda Zia needs to go abroad for advanced treatment, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday urged the government to ensure her release on bail.
“Doctors are saying the complete treatment of the diseases she (Khaleda) has been suffering from is not possible here. She needs to go to a multi-disciplinary quality hospital or centre that can treat all the diseases altogether,” he said.

Speaking at a discussion, the BNP leader said Khaleda’s doctors have also made it clear that there is no such hospital in Bangladesh that can provide the treatment of her all diseases at once. “She has to go outside the country (for that treatment.”
He also asked the government as to why Khaleda Zia is not being granted bail. “Begum Zia does not want mercy from you. You ensure the bail as she deserves it. Everyone has been given bail in such cases. I know no one is left. Then, why aren't you giving her bail? ”
Afsar Ahmed Siddiqui Smrity Foundation arranged the programme at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity marking the 20th death anniversary of former BNP leader Afsar Ahmed Siddiqui.
Fakhrul said Khaleda was admitted to Evercare Hospital in the city on Tuesday as she is ill.
He said their chairperson’s various health complications turned critical as she had not been given proper treatment during her stay in jail.
The BNP leader said Khaleda has been suffering from low fever for a few days.

The BNP leader said as their party chief did not have any medical tests since she was discharged from the same hospital on June 19. “So, she was taken to the hospital as per doctors’ advice for further tests and treatment.”
On Tuesday afternoon, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was admitted to Evercare Hospital.
A medical board, led by Dr Shahabuddin Talukder, has been providing her treatment for various diseases.
On April 27, Khaleda Zia was admitted to Evercare Hospital with Covid infections. She received treatment there until June 19 for post-Covid complications and some other underlying health problems.
Amid the coronavirus outbreak, the government freed Khaleda Zia from jail through an executive order suspending her sentences based on two conditions on March 25 last year.
As per the conditions, Khaleda Zia will not be allowed to go abroad for treatment as she will have to stay home and receive treatment there. She was released earlier on the same conditions.

The BNP chairperson’s doctors said she has been suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, ophthalmological and dental complications.
Her family applied to the government twice in May and August this year seeking permission to take her abroad for better treatment, but the government turned it down saying there is no scope for a convicted person to avail of such a scope.
Khaleda admitted to Evercare Hospital
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was again admitted to Evercare Hospital on Tuesday for treatment and medical tests.
The BNP chief reached the hospital around 4:15pm, said her media wing member Sayrul Kabir Khan.
Later, she was admitted to the hospital as per doctors’ advice, said Khaleda’s medical team member Dr AZM Zahid Hossain.
He said the BNP chief has been undergoing multiple health check-ups at the hospital.
Process underway to extend time length of Khaleda’s conditional release: Minister
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Thursday said the process to extend the suspension of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's sentences in two graft cases is underway. “We’ve received an application and it has been sent to the Law Ministry following the procedure, and now the process is underway as per the Law Ministry’s opinion,” he said while speaking at the Secretariat. On September 12, Law Minister Anisul Huq said BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia must return to jail for submitting a fresh application to seek permission to go abroad for treatment.

She has to go back to jail and then submit a fresh application if she wants to go abroad for treatment,” the minister said. He, however, said it does not mean that the application will be approved once Khaleda submits it to the government. “It depends on the government's wishes.” Meanwhile, the family of Khaleda Zia recently submitted an application to the Home Ministry seeking further extension of her conditional release and allowing her to go abroad for receiving advanced treatment.

The Law Ministry gave its opinion on September 7 and sent it back to the Home Ministry which is supposed to be sent to the Prime Minister’s Office for approval.
Khaleda to receive 2nd dose of Covid vaccine today
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will receive the second dose of Moderna Covid-19 vaccine at Sheikh Russel Gastroliver Institute and Hospital on Thursday afternoon.
She is scheduled to leave her Gulshan residence around 2pm for the hospital to receive the vaccine shot, said her media wing member Sayrul Kabir Khan.

Party senior leaders and Khaleda’s personal physicians will be present there at the hospital.
Meanwhile, BNP chief’s personal secretary ABM Abdus Sattar sent a letter to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner seeking her security during the vaccination.
Earlier on July 19, Khaleda took the first dose of Moderna Covid-19 vaccine at the same hospital.

She registered online through Surokkha website for getting the vaccine on July 8.
On April 11, the 76-year-old BNP chief tested positive for Covid-19 and she was admitted to Evercare Hospital on April 27.

Khaleda takes 1st dose of Covid vaccine
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia took the first dose of Moderna Covid-19 vaccine on Monday.
Khaleda Zia took the vaccine shot at Sheikh Russel Gastro Liver Institute and Hospital in the city’s Mohakhali area at 3:56pm.

She got an SMS to take the first dose of Covid vaccine as she got registered online through a government-approved app, ‘Surokkha’, 10 days back.
“Madam received an SMS as a formality to take the first dose of the Covid vaccine,” said her medical team member and BNP vice-chairman Dr AZM Zahid Hossain told UNB on Sunday.
On April 11, the 76-year-old BNP chief tested positive for Covid-19 and she was admitted to Evercare Hospital on April 27.

BNP’s efforts on to send Khaleda abroad: Fakhrul
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday said their party remains active in ensuring its Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s advanced treatment abroad.
"Our party’s efforts are on in this regard (convincing govt to give her permission). We’ll let you know if there is any progress over the matter,” he said.

Fakhrul made the remarks at a press conference at BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office as journalists wanted to know about the party's initiative to send Khaleda abroad for advanced treatment for her heart, lung, kidneys and other health complications.
Asked about the BNP chief’s latest health condition, the BNP leader said, “She’s now feeling better.”
He said Khaleda undergoes health check-up by her personal physicians every day. “There’s a team of doctors who examine her health every night.”
Fakhrul also said all members of her medical team will meet Khaleda one day every week and evaluate her condition.

Khaleda subjected to “state repression”: BNP
Alleging that their party Chairperson Khaleda Zia has been subjected to “state repression”, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday said her life is now at risk since the government has snatched her right to receive advanced treatment abroad.
“Khaleda Zia has been imprisoned in completely false and fabricated cases, and she has been subjected to state repression. Her life is now at risk for lack of proper treatment in prison, and her right to receive such treatment has also been snatched,” he said.

In a message on the occasion of International Day in Support of the Victims of Torture, the BNP leader also said although Khaleda needs advanced treatment abroad, the government has put a restriction to her travel abroad. “It’s nothing, but a manifestation of government’s vengeance and extreme torture.”
He urged the democracy-loving people in the country to get united and put up a resistance against the government’s all repressive acts.

Fakhrul expressed deep sympathy to the oppressed individuals, groups and communities around the world, including in Bangladesh, on International Day in support of the victims of torture discarded by the United Nations.
He said people have been oppressed by cruel dictators and one-party rule for ages all over the world, and it is still going on. “Intolerant rulers are carrying out ruthless repressive acts against political dissents.”
The BNP leader alleged that the current government in Bangladesh has usurped power and it has been carrying out fascist oppression on people by resorting to enforced disappearance and extrajudicial killings as its main weapons.

He also accused the government of trying to suppress the media by threatening and intimidating journalists. “Freedom of the media is now completely threatened.”
Fakhrul said Bangladesh has been going through a very tough time as political party leaders, human rights activists and political analysts who are vocal in favour of democracy are being victims of the government’s repressive acts or getting killed and crippled.
Khaleda’s kidneys, liver not functioning properly: Fakhrul
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has been suffering from recurrent fever due to her heart and kidney complications, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Monday.
"As far as I’ve come to know from doctors, she (Khaleda) has a heart problem. The fluid accumulating in her lungs will not be stopped unless this complication is resolved. What they (doctors) think is her kidneys and liver are not functioning properly,” he said.

Speaking at a press conference at BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office, Fakhrul said, “That's why she has been suffering from recurrent fever. She had fever yesterday (Sunday), too.”
Expressing gratitude to the doctors at Evercare Hospital, he said they are trying their best to ensure proper treatment to the BNP chief. “What they (doctors) are repeatedly saying is that she (Khaleda) should be taken to an advance centre for treatment as our hospitals are not well equipped.”

Khaleda still at risk, needs treatment abroad: Fakhrul
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia needs treatment at any advanced hospital abroad as she is at health risk due to her acute heart and kidney problems, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Friday.
"There are some fundamental issues over her illness that are alarming. She has acute heart and kidney problems. The medical board is concerned about these problems,” he said.

Speaking at a press conference at BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office, Fakhrul said it seems the hospitals and advanced centres in Bangladesh are not enough for her treatment.
“Experts have repeatedly been saying that she (Khaleda) needs advanced treatment and it is now important to send her to any advanced centre for proper treatment of her illnesses. We’ve also been talking about it repeatedly,” he said.
Replying to a question whether Khaleda Zia will go to court for bail under the current condition of her health, the BNP leader apparently answered in the negative, "I replied to such a question in the past. Unfortunately, we suffered the biggest loss in the court over the legal and political matters.”

Fakhrul said it is the court that annulled the caretaker government system. “It’s the court that also has done serious injustice to Khaleda Zia. She can’t be convicted by any law in any way.”
He said they will have to take a decision on moving court very carefully since they are not confident about getting justice.

Khaleda still in vulnerable condition: Fakhrul
Though BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was taken back to a cabin from the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) of Evercare Hospital, she is still not out of health risk, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Friday.
“Madam (Khaleda) was shifted to a special cabin yesterday (Thursday), but she has not yet recovered. It can be said that she’s still in a hazardous and vulnerable condition,” he said.
Speaking at a press conference, Fakhrul said, “Her (Khaleda’s) heart, kidneys and lungs are at risk, though she doesn’t have any lung infection. Still, she has heart and kidney problems.”

BNP arranged the press conference to give its official reaction to the proposed national budget for fiscal year 2021-22.
Fakhrul said Khaleda was affected by some post-Covid reactions while staying in the CCU for a long time. “A reaction was dangerous as she had some infections in her blood."
The BNP leader said the doctors moved the BNP chief to a special cabin as there is a high risk of infection at the CCU.

On Thursday, Khaleda was taken back to a cabin from the CCU of the hospital after a month of treatment there.
The BNP chairperson is being given treatment for post-Covid complications with CCU facilities in the cabin.
The 76-year-old BNP chief, who tested positive for Covid-19 on April 11, was admitted to Evercare Hospital on April 27.
