Miscreants attack UP chairman in Kushtia
A union parishad (UP) chairman came under attack with sharp weapons by unidentified miscreants, apparently an episode in a longstanding feud in Daulatpur upazila in Kushtia.The injured was identified as Helal Uddin, 55, chairman of Ariya Union Parishad and president of the Union Awami League.Two miscreants on a motorcycle hacked Helal Uddin indiscriminately around 10:30 pm on Sunday, according to police, when he was returning home from Kalidaspur market on some personal errand.

The assailants fled the scene leaving him seriously injured, said SM Jabid Hasan, officer-in-charge (OC) of Daulatpur police station.Later, he was rushed to Kushtia Medical College Hospital where he is currently undergoing treatment, the OC added."We are investigating the attack", added the OC Jabid.
Kushtia: 10th grader stabbed after refusing youth's proposal
A youth allegedly stabbed a tenth-grader after she refused his proposal of a relationship in Jhaudia Bazar area of the district town on Saturday afternoon.
Police, however, detained a man, who allegedly assisted the youth in stabbing her, from the area at night.
The victim girl, who has been undergoing treatment at a hospital, said one of the elder brothers of the locality named Ashraful Islam conveyed a message to her through a man to meet him at a restaurant after her tuition in the afternoon.
“I found Rana, who proposed to me, at the restaurant where the elder brother had also been earlier,” she said.
Rana locked into an altercation with her over the refusal of his proposal and stabbed her with sharp weapons when she finally cleared her stance about the relationship, the victim said from her hospital bed.

Dr Ashraful Alam, a residential medical officer of the hospital, said the body bore marks of injuries made by sharp weapons like blade or knife.
Annur Jayed, officer-in-charge of Kushtia Islami University Police Station, said they have already detained the accomplice Ashraful from the area.
Efforts are on to nab the main accused Rana and a process is underway to register a case, he added.
Youth sent to jail over throwing stones at moving train in Kushtia
Railway police arrested and sent a youth to jail through court over throwing stones at a moving intercity train at Kushtia’s Court Station on Friday.
The youth has been identified as Sumon Ali, 24, a resident of Sunamganj’s Chhatok upazila.
The stones thrown by Sumon broke several glasses of the train and injured a passenger, who has been provided primary treatment.
Although Sumon has presented himself to the police as a mentally unstable person, police are suspecting him to be a vagabond, said Md Monjer Ali, Officer In-charge (OC) of Poradaha Railway Police Station.

According to the OC, the incident happened when Faridpur-bound Madhumati Express train was leaving the Court Station around 11:00am.
“Sumon started to throw stones at the train all of a sudden. The stones broke various windows of the train and injured Ashraful Islam, a passenger. Later, railway police arrested the youth with the help of the locals,” said the OC.
A case has been filed against Sumon with Poradaha Railway Police Station in this regard.
BCL forms probe body over Kushtia toll plaza attack
A two-member committee has been formed by the district Chhatra League in connection with the attack on six officials of Mas-Ud Rumi bridge toll plaza over collection of tolls on Friday.Sourav Khan, vice president of Kushtia District Chhatra League and joint general secretary Shakeel Ahmed Tushar are members of the committee.It has been asked to submit a report within 72 hours, said a Bangladesh Chhatra League press release issued on Saturday night.Earlier, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists roughed up six officials of Mas-Ud Rumi bridge toll plaza over collection of tolls on Friday, leaving all of them critically injured.The injured were receiving treatment at Kushtia General Hospital. “No one has complained yet over the issue. There are multiple CCTV cameras at the toll plaza. Attackers will be identified after analyzing CCTV footage,” said the OC.
Severing college teacher’s wrist: Seven held in Kushtia
Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) members have arrested seven people over attempting to kill a college teacher by severing his right wrist at Shalghar Modhua village in Kumarkhali upazila of Kushtia on Friday.
The arrestees were Mosharof Hossain Mosha, 26, son of Md Soleman, Nazim Uddin, 27, son of Mokaddes Hossain, Md Samad, 27, son of Abdul Khaleque, Muhaimen Hossain, 27, son of Aiyub Ali, Halim, 40, son of Samed Ali, Md Palash, 23, son of Abdul Khaleque and Md Mukul, 42, son of Gopal Sheikh.
All the arrestees are residents of the same village.

RAB members have seized three rounds of bullet, magazines and a foreign pistol from their possessions. The arrestees have confessed to their involvement in the crime during primary interrogation.
In a press briefing on Saturday, Squadron Leader Mohammad Ilias Khan, company commander of Kushtia Camp of RAB-12, said Tofazzel Hossain is an assistant professor of Economics Department at Bashgram College of the upazila.
He came under attack as a sequel to previous enmity between two groups over establishing supremacy at Kushtia Sadar upazila’s Bongshitola area on May 31.

Victim’s son Nazmus Sakib filed a case with Kushtia Model Police Station accusing 26 people, including 5/6 unnamed onews, for the attack the next day.

College teacher’s wrist severed in Kushtia
Miscreants severed the wrist of a teacher of Bashgram Alauddin Ahmed Degree College in Kushita district following previous enmity on Tuesday, said police.
Quamruzzaman Talukdar, officer-in-charge of Kumarkhali Police Station, said the miscreants, numbering 10-15, waylaid Tofazzel Biswas, son of Bala Biswas of Shalghar Madhua area, when he reached at Bongshitola New Bridge and attacked him at 2:30 pm.

They stabbed him indiscriminately and cut off the wrist of his right hand.
He was taken to Kushtia General Hospital.
Drive is on to arrest the attackers, he added.
2 sentenced to life for murder in Kushtia
A Kushtia court on Monday sentenced two people to life imprisonment for killing a farmer in Kumarkhali upazila in 2015.Kushtia Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-1 Judge Muhammad Tajul Islam passed the order.The accused Md Bappy Pramanik and Alamin Sarder have also been fined with tk 25,000, and will have to spend an additional year in jail if they fail to pay.The convicts were present at the court during the hearing and they have been sent to Kushtia jail after the order, said Public Prosecutor advocate Anupam Kumar Nandi.

Jubo Jote politician killed in Kushtia
A local leader of the Jatiya Jubo Jote was hacked to death allegedly by assailants in Daulatpur upazila of Kushtia in the small hours of Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Mahbub Khan Salam, 35, general secretary of Jatiya Jubo Jote and son of Alauddin of Amdah village in the upazila.

Jabed Hassan, officer-in-charge of Doulatpur Police Station, said Salam was brought to Kushtia General Hospital around 10.20pm in a serious condition, and he died at 1.20am. "The body bore several stab injury marks," said the OC.
An eyewitness, identified as Mamun, who was accompanying the victim, told cops that a group of armed men suddenly attacked them near Allahrdarga Boyan intersection at night.

"Mamun also suffered minor injuries in the attack. Efforts are on to nab the perpetrators of the crime," the OC said.
About 100 people booked over death of 4 in Kushtia clash
Around 94 people have been sued in two separate cases filed in connection with the killing of four people during the clash between two rival groups in Astha Nagar village of Kushtia's Jhaudia union.
Ashraful, Matiar Mandal's brother who was killed in the clash on Monday night, filed a complaint against 67 people at the Kushtia Islamic University Police Station, naming Keramat Ullah, president and former chairman of Jhaudia Union Awami League, as the main accused.

On the other hand, Rafiqul, son of Rahim Malitha who was killed in the clash, has filed another complaint against 27 people in the same police station, naming his rival Anis Membar as the main accused.
Police registered the FIRs after receiving the complaint, confirmed Kushtia Islamic University Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mostafizur Rahman.
The OC said the situation in the area is normal at present. Besides, a large number of police have been deployed in the area to prevent further clashes.
The OC also said that the operation is on to nab the accused.
On Monday, four people were killed and 15 others injured in a clash between two rival groups of Awami League over establishing dominance in Astha Nagar village of Kushtia's Jhaudia union.

The killed were identified as Kashem, 50, Laltu, 30, Rahim, 50 and Matiar, 40, of the same village.
Followers of Keramat Ali Biswas, president and former chairman of Jhaudia Union Awami League, clashed with the followers of Fazlu Mandal minutes before Iftar on Monday.
The four were reportedly killed by local weapons used during the clash, police said.
