6 get death sentence for raping teenage girl in Khulna
A tribunal in Khulna on Tuesday sentenced six men to death for raping a teenage girl in Sonadanga upazila in 2019.
The death-row convicts are Morshedul Islam Shanto alias Shanto Biswas, Sheikh Shahadat Hossain, Md Rabbi Hasan Parash, Md Mahmud Hasan Akash, Kazi Ariful Islam Pritam and Md Mim Hossain. Among them, Shanto, Shahadat and Pritam were tried in absentia.
Khulna Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-3 Judge Abdus Salam Khan delivered the judgment.

The court fined the convicts Tk 20,000 each.
The court also sentenced four adolescents to eight years imprisonment each. One of them was sentenced to three more years more jail under the Anti-Pornography Act.
According to the case, Shanto raped the sixth grader girl after taking her to a rented house of another convict on June 29 in 2019. The others convicts videoed the crime and raped the girl in terms.

On the following day, a case was filed against nine people at Sonadanga police station.
On November 13 of the same year, the investigation officer of the case and Sonadanga police station officer-in-charge (OC) Momtazul Hoque submitted a chargesheet against 10 convicts.
Netrakona’s Khalilur gets death penalty for crimes against humanity in 1971
International Crimes Tribunal on Tuesday (September 13, 2022) sentenced fugitive criminal Md Khalilur Rahman from Netrakona for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War of 1971.
A three-member tribunal led by Justice Shahinur Islam pronounced the death sentence.
Public Prosecutor Rana Dasgupta and Rezia Sultana represented the state during the hearing while state appointed lawyer Gazi MH Tamim appeared for the accused.

PP Rezia Sultana said three of the four accused in this case died during the trial.
The tribunal gave death sentence to Khalilur, then commander of Al Badr, in his absence on Tuesday as he has been absconding, said the PP.
On January 30, 2017, in a press briefing of the probe agency final report on the accused was published.

At first the case had five accused but one of them, Ramzan Ali, died before the trial began.
Other three accused that died during the trial were Khalilur’s brother Azizur Rahman, Ashq Ali and Md Shahnewaz, all residents of Noagaon union in Netrakona.
Charges of illegal detention, torture, abduction, looting, arson, vandalism, attempted rape, rape, murder and genocide in 1971 were brought against the accused in this case.

The charge sheet mentioned that 22 people were killed, one was raped, one attempted rape, two of the four abducted being tortured in a camp, 14 or 15 houses being looted and arson at seven houses.
Death row convict Khalilur was a member of Islami Chhatra Sangha who joined the Razakar forces during the war. Later, he became commander of Al Badr in Chandigarh union. He was known to be a supporter of Jamaat-e-Islami.

A tribunal in Khulna today (September 7, 2022) sentenced five men to death for raping a teenage girl in Khalishpur of the district in 2011.
The death row convicts are-Ali Akbar alias Hridoy, Mehedi Hasan alias Ibu, Sohel, Abdullah and Mohon.
Khulna Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-3 Judge Abdus Salam Khan pronounced the judgment.

On March 23 in 2011, convict Mohon abducted the girl from the Bihari Camp in Khalishpur and took her to a banana orchard in Charer Haat.
Ali Akbar and some others raped the girl there, leaving her unconscious near the camp.
Later, a case was filed at Khalishpur police station.

On June 20 of the same year, the investigation officer of the case sub-inspector (SI) Kazi Rezaul Karim submitted a chargesheet against the five.
Among the convicts, Sohel, Abdullah and Mohon were tried in absentia.
Man to die for killing housewife in Pabna
A Pabna tribunal on Sunday sentenced a man to death for killing a housewife after his failed rape attempt in 2018.
Pabna Woman and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Mizanur Rahman handed down the punishment.
The court also fined the convict Tutul Char, son of Atahar Mallik of Paikerhati village in Sathia upazila, Tk 10,000 -in default to suffer five years more in rigorous imprisonment for attempting to rape the woman.

The court also fined the convict Tk 5,000 more in default to suffer for two years in jail on charge of hiding the body.
According to the prosecution, the convict Tutul tried to rape Aleya Khatun, wife of Ardosh Mallik of Paikarhati village after getting her alone in a field.
As Tutul failed to violate her he strangled her to death by wrapping sari on her neck and kept the body in a paddy field.
A missing complaint was lodged with Sathia police.
Police arrested Tutul and following his confessional statement, Aleya’s body was recovered from the paddy field, six days after she murdered.

Shabana Akter lodged another complaint with the recovery of the body of her daughter with Sathia Police.
Later police registered a murder case and submit a chargesheet against Tutul on January 31, 2018.
HC commutes death sentence of 4 in Narshingdi garment worker rape case
The High Court on Tuesday commuted the death sentence of four convicts to life imprisonment in a case over violating a 20-year-old garment worker in Palash upazila of Narsingdi district in 2013.
The HC bench of Justice Bhishmadev Chakrabortty and Justice Khandaker Diliruzzaman handed down the judgment after hearing a petition.

The convicts are—Ashiqur Rahman, Ilias Mia, Rumin and Robin of Bagpara area in Palash upazila of Narsingdi district.
The court also acquitted —Ibrahim and Abdur Rahman- from the charges.
Advocates Munsurul Haque Chowdhury, Lutfur Rahman Akond and Akter Rasul stood for the accused while deputy attorney general Harun Rashid and Attorney General Zahid Ahmed Hero represented the state.
On May 23, 2013, the convicts picked up the woman and took her to an abandoned place while she was returning home and violated her in turns on May 23, 2013.
Later, a complaint was lodged with Palash Police.

Police registered an FIR in this connection.
On August 25, 2016, Narsingdi Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Shamim Ahmed sentenced six people to death in the case.
Later, the convicts filed a petition with the High Court challenging the lower court order.
India: 38 get death in 2008 Gujarat serial blasts case
A special anti-terrorism court in the western Indian state of Gujarat on Friday sentenced to death as many as 38 people in a 13-year-old serial bomb blasts case.
This is by far the highest number of death sentences given by any Indian court in one go.
The same court had earlier convicted 49 people for the terror attack -- a series of 31 blasts in a span of an hour -- that claimed 56 lives and injured more than 200 others in the city of Ahmedabad in Gujarat in 2008.

Eleven of the remaining convicts have been sentenced to life imprisonment by special court judge AR Patel. None of the life-term convicts would be entitled to parole after 14 years, the court made it clear.
In fact, a total of 80 accused were put on trial in the case. On February 8, the court, however, acquitted 28 others in the case for lack of evidence.
During the trial, the prosecution held the home-grown terror outfit Indian Mujahideen responsible for the blasts.

The terrorists had carried out the serial blasts as an act of revenge for the 2002 riots in Gujarat that claimed the lives of over 1,000 people, mostly minority Muslims, according to police.
Sinha murder case: OC Pradeep & Liakat appeal to HC for acquittal
Pradeep Kumar Das and Liakat Ali, two former police officials sentenced to death for the murder of Major Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan (retired), have appealed to the High Court seeking acquittal.
Pradeep's lawyer Advocate Rana Dasgupta said on Tuesday that he has appealed to the office concerned of the High Court on Monday.
The acquittal of Pradeep and Liakat from the death sentence given by the lower court has been sought in the appeal, he added.

A Cox’s Bazar court on January 31 sentenced former OC Pradeep and ex-inspector Liakat to death and six others to life imprisonment in the Major Sinha murder case.
District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Ismail pronounced the judgment in the presence of all the 15 accused, said Public Prosecutor Faridul Alam.
The court had, however, acquitted seven other accused in the case.
The death references of the murder case reached the High Court on February 8.
On February 9, Pradeep and Liakat were shifted to Kashimpur Jail in Gazipur.
Sinha murder
On July 31, 2020, Major Sinha was shot dead at the Shamlapur police check post in Baharchhara Union of Cox's Bazar while he was returning to the town after filming for a documentary.

On August 5, 2020, Sinha's sister, Sharmin Shahriar Ferdous, moved the Teknaf Senior Judicial Magistrate's Court accusing nine members of law enforcement agencies of the murder, including former officer-in-charge of Teknaf Model Police Station Pradeep Kumar Das and Baharchhara Police Outpost inspector Liakat Ali.
On December 13 the same year, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) submitted a charge-sheet against 15 people, including ex-OC Pradeep, police informer Ayaz and three APBn members, in the case.
On June 27, 2021, the court framed charges against them.
Two to die for murder in Rajshahi
A Rajshahi court on Monday sentenced two people to death for killing a man in 2013.
The condemned convicts are-Phuljan Bibi, 40, wife of Deraj Mistri and Mafiz Uddin, 45, son of Moijuddin of Kathalbaria in Durgapur upazila of the district.
The court also fined them Tk 50,000 each.
According to the prosecution, Phuljan had maintained illicit relationship with Nurunnabi alias Ayub Nabi and Mafiz Uddin despite having her husband.

When Mafiz came to know about the relationship between Phuljan and Nurunnabi, he got angry.
To make Mafiz happy, Phuljan then made a plot to kill Nurunnabi with the assistance of Mafiz.
On April 15, 2013, Phuljan called Nurunnabi near a poultry farm where she along with Mafiz killed Nurunnabi.
Later, they severed the head of Nurunnabi and dumped the body.

Hashem Ali, son of Nurunnabi, filed a case with Durgapur Police Station.
After examining the records and witnesses, Rajshahi Public Safety Disturbance Crime Prevention Tribunal Judge Akbar Ali Sheikh handed down the verdict.
Stepmother to die for killing 10-yr old girl
A Khulna court on Monday sentenced a woman to death for killing her step daughter in 2020.
The condemned convict is Tithi Akter Mukta, wife of Khaza Sheikh, an ansar member of Arkandi village in Terokhada upazila.
The court also fined the convict Tk 10,000.
According to the prosecution, Khaza Sheikh married Mukta after divorcing is first wife on January 29, 2020.

Khaza’s daughter Tanisha, 10, used to live at her father’s house after the divorce of her parents.
On April 2, 2020, Khaza had an altercation with Mukta over maintaining an illicit relationship with one Farabi Prasenjit over mobile phone. During the altercation, Khaza threatened to divorce her.
To take revenge on Khaza, Mukta locked Tanisha in her room and hit the girl with a sharp weapon, leaving her injured on April 5, 2020.

Later, she was taken to a local hospital where doctors declared her dead.
After examining the records and witnesses, Khulna District and Sessions Judge Court Mashiur Rahman handed down the verdict.
One to die for killing sister in Narail
A court here on Monday sentenced a man to death for killing his sister in 2019.
The condemned convict is Ripon Molla, 42, son of Moksed Molla of Kalinagar village in Naragati upazila of the district.
The court also fined him Tk 20,000.
According to the prosecution, Ripon killed his sister Fatema, 20, by drowning in a pond on November 25, 2019 over previous enmity.

He also hit Fatema with a stick for ensuing her death. Later, he concealed the body the mud of the pond.
Ripon’s son Rashed Molla disclosed the matter when all were searching Fatema.
Later, they recovered the body and informed police.

Police arrested Ripon and a case was filed in this connection on that day.
After hearing records and witnesses, Narail District and Sessions Judge Munshi Mohammad Mashier Rahman handed down the verdict.
