13 arson incidents reported in 27 hours till this morning: Fire Service
Thirteen arson attacks have been reported across Bangladesh from 6 am on Wednesday (November 08, 2023) till 9 am today (November 09, 2023) during the ongoing 48-hour blockade.

Of these, five arson attacks were reported in Dhaka City Corporation areas, three in Gazipur, one in Khagrachhari, one in Bogura, two in Barishal and Barguna, and one in Noakhali, said Talha Bin Jasim, station officer of Fire Service and Civil Defense's media cell.
A total of seven buses, four covered vans, and two trucks were burned during this period.

Clash with police leaves female garment worker dead in Gazipur
A female garment worker was killed and ten were injured in a clash between police and RMG workers at Konabari in Gazipur on Wednesday (November 08, 2023).
The deceased was identified as Anjuara Khatun, 30, wife of Jamal Hossain of Sirajganj district.
Witnesses said workers of garment factories took to the streets in the morning in Konabari, demanding Tk 23,000 as the minimum salary.
Garment factories reopen in Gazipur, several hurt in clash with police
On information, police fired rubber bullets, sound grenades and lobbed tear gas shells to disperse them, triggering a clash that left eleven people injured.
The agitating garment workers claimed that Anjuara died on the way to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.

Mohammad Ibrahim Khan, deputy commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police, said a female garment worker — injured in the clash — was sent to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.
Garment workers have been demonstrating, demanding to increase their basic salary to Tk 23,000, for several days across the country.
The government of Bangladesh on Tuesday fixed Tk 12,500 as minimum salary for entry-level RMG workers.

Police have arrested a Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leader who allegedly led vandalism and arson attacks on garment factories and other establishments in Gazipur.The arrestee was identified as Ripon Hossain, joint convener of Kaliakoir upazila unit of Chhatra Dal.A press briefing on the development was held at Gazipur Metropolitan Police Commissioner's office earlier today (November 07, 2023).

RMG worker dies in Gazipur during protest demanding salary hike
An RMG worker died today during the ongoing protest, demanding a minimum basic salary of Tk 23,000, on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway at Bhogra in Gazipur.
The deceased was identified as Russel Hawladar, 22, an electrician of Design Express Limited Company in Maleker Bari in the district and son of Hannan Hawladar of Jhalakathi district.
Protesting RMG workers said that Russel died in “police firing.” Police rejected the claim.
Protest for salary hike: RMG workers block road for 7th consecutive day, set vehicle on fire in Gazipur
Workers of several factories staged demonstrations on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway at Bhogra area, demanding salary hike.
Later, authorities concerned of Design Express Limited declared suspension of the production of the factory amid unrest, workers said.
On information, police rushed to the spot and fired rubber bullets and used tear gas shells to disperse the workers.
RMG workers block road in Gazipur demanding salary hike for 3rd consecutive day
Md Ranju, a colleague of Russel, said, “Russel received bullet injuries while returning home from the factory.”
He was taken to Taiarunnesa Memorial Medical College and Hospital where the doctors referred him to Tongi Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital.
Dr Tarek Hasan, resident medical officer of Tongi Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital, said Russel was brought dead at the hospital.
The body was sent to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital morgue for autopsy, said Dr Tarek.

Abu Siddique, officer-in-charge of Bason Police Station, said the workers staged a demonstration and put up a barricade on the highway. They also torched a vehicle during the protest.
Police used tear gas shells and fired sound grenades to disperse them, he said.
Asked about the death of the worker in “police firing,” OC Abu Siddique said he was not aware of it.

RMG worker ‘pushed off’ moving bus, dies in Gazipur
A 32-year-old garment worker died after she was allegedly pushed off a moving bus following an argument with the helper of the bus over fare at MC Bazar in Sripur upazila of Gazipur district on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway on Friday night.
The deceased was identified as Champa Begum, wife of Abul Kalam of Mymensingh district.

Sumon Mia, nephew of Champa, said on Friday, Champa went to her sister’s house in Nayanpur of the upazila to visit her parents.
At 8:45 pm, Champa boarded a bus of ‘Taqwa Paribahan’ from Nayanpur to go to Mymensingh’s Gargaria Masterbari.

At one stage, she locked into an altercation with the bus helper over fare and when the bus reached MC Bazar, the helper pushed Champa off the bus, alleged Sumon.
Later, she was taken to a local hospital where doctors declared her dead.
Angered by the incident, local people vandalised a number of minibuses passing the area at night.

Kankan Kumar, officer-in-charge of Mawna Highway Police, said they have heard about it. Police are trying to identify the bus the woman was travelling in.
Action will be taken after getting complaint from the family of the deceased, said the OC.
Newly elected Barishal, Khulna and Gazipur city mayors take oath
Newly elected mayors of three city corporations — Abul Khair Abdullah of Barishal, Talukder Abdul Khaleque of Khulna and Jayeda Khatun of Gazipur — took oath this morning.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina administered the oath at a ceremony held in Shapla Hall of her office.
Later, 157 newly elected councillors of general wards and female councillors of the reserved seats of the three city corporations also took oath at the same venue.
AL-backed mayoral candidate Abul Khair Abdullah wins Barishal City Corporation election
Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Md Tazul Islam administered the councillors’ oaths.
Local Government Division Secretary Muhammad Ibrahim conducted the oath-taking ceremony.
State Minister for LGRD and Cooperatives Swapan Bhattacharjee was present on the occasion.
AL-backed mayor candidate Talukder Abdul Khaleque wins Khulna City polls
On June 12, Awami League mayoral candidate Abul Khair Abdullah (Khokon Serniabat) won the Barishal City Corporation election with 87,807 votes. His nearest rival Islami Andolon Bangladesh candidate Mufti Syed Mohammad Faizul Karim bagged 33,828 votes.
Awami League mayoral candidate Talukder Abdul Khaleque won the Khulna City Corporation (KCC) election with 1,54,825 votes. His nearest rival Islami Andolan Bangladesh’s Md Abdul Awal got 60,064 votes in the polls held on June 12.

The government, political parties, civil society, and the media in Bangladesh have all expressed their desire that the upcoming national election be free, fair, and peaceful, Patel said.
In support of free, fair and peaceful election, the US announced a new policy that allows them to impose visa restrictions on Bangladeshi individuals, including current or former officials, pro-government or opposition political party members, and others believed to be responsible for or complicit in “undermining the democratic election process” in Bangladesh, Patel said.

Will accept results no matter what: Azmat after casting vote in GCC polls
Awami League-backed mayoral candidate Azmat Ullah Khan on Thursday (May 25, 2023) cast his ballot in the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) Election saying he will accept whatever the result is.
“I always respect the people’s opinion and whoever gets elected today, I will accept the results,” he said while talking to reporters after casting his vote at Tongi Darus Salam Madrasha Centre around 9 am.
People are going to the polling stations spontaneously and after seeing long queues of voters it can be presumed that a participatory election is being held in Gazipur.

“I am a political worker and my party Bangladesh Awami League is a democratic political party and you (people) have seen that when I went out for campaigning, I was always with the people as a political activist,” he said.
Voting in the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) election began on Thursday using electronic voting machines (EVMs) in all polling stations in a peaceful manner.
The voting began around 8 am and will continue till 4 pm without any break.

Early voting has been peaceful and the law and order situation is also good, said Zayeda Khatun, an independent mayoral candidate in the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) elections.
She made the remark while talking to reporters after casting her vote at Kanaia Government Primary School polling station around 10 am.
There has been no complaint so far against the use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), she said adding “I am hopeful about my victory in the election.’

She also urged the voters to cast their votes at the respective polling stations.
Meanwhile, Gazipur City Corporation's (GCC) former mayor Jahangir Alam also cast his vote at the same polling station with his mother.
