A suspected robber was killed in a lynch-mob attack at Rajendrapur in Gazipur district in the small hours of Saturday, said police. The deceased was identified as Rakib, 27, son of Alamgir H ossain of Joydebpur upazila. He was wanted in four robbery cases. Mahtab Uddin, officer-in-charge of Joydebpur Police Station, said garment worker Hashi Akter, 19 along with her colleague Ilias Hossain was heading towards Rajendrapur Haldoba area to visit one their colleague’s house in the evening. Also read: Three robbers lynched in Manikganj, two die When they reached near Rakkhitpara, a group of miscreants intercepted them and took Hashi to Rakkhitpara forest after beating Ilias up mercilessly. Later, they tied Hashi to a tree and tried to realise ransom. At one stage, Ilias informed the matter to the local people and sought help. Local people then besieged the forest and caught Rakib around 12:30 am while the others managed to flee the scene. They also gave him a good thrashing, leaving him injured. On information, police rescued Hashi and Rakib and took him to Shaheed Tajuddin Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared him dead. Hashi lodged a complaint with Joydebpur Police at night.
Twelve people were killed and fourteen others injured in several road accidents in Bogura, Gazipur, Narayanganj, Cumilla and Pabna districts on Friday. In Bogura, two unidentified people were killed and ten others injured in a head-on collision between two buses belonging to ‘Kaliyakour Paribahan and Naogan Travels Paribahan’ at Ghoga bridge area on the Dhaka-Borgua highway at around 3:30pm, said Siddikur Rahman, an officer of Sherpur Fire service and civil defense station. The injured were undergoing treatment at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College, said Baniul Alam, in-charge of Sherpur highway police camp. In Gazipur, three motorcycle riders were killed and a minor child was also injured when a private car hit their bike on the Konabari flyover in Gazipur on Friday noon. The deceased were identified as Raju Islam, 26, Md Shamim, 26 and Shahin Islam, 31; all the victims hailed from Konabari’s Dewliyapara area. Md Shakhawat Imtiaz, a Sub-Inspector (SI) of Konabari police station, said the three youths met the tragic end when the private car hit their bike while crossing the Konabari flyover on Friday noon. In Narayanganj, a private university student was killed and three others were injured when a bus of ‘Soudia Paribahan’ crashed into a private car carrying the victims in Narayanganj’s Dariyakandi area on Friday. The deceased was identified as twenty-year-old Mahima, a third-year student in the English department of East West University while identities of the injured could not be known immediately, said Nabir Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kanchpur Highway Police Station. In Sirajganj, two people were killed when an unidentified truck hit their pickup van on the Hatikumrul-Banparra highway in Tarash upazila Friday early. The deceased have been identified as pickup van driver Kiron Mridha, 28, son of late Abdul Karim of Duttakanai village in Gurudaspur upazila of Natore district, and his assistant Jahangir Alam, 47, a resident of Sirajganj municipality. Md Lutfur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Hatikumrul highway police station, said the accident happened at around 7: am when the unidentified truck crashed into the pickup van that got stranded on the highway after it had gone out of order. The accident left the duo dead on the spot; he said adding that the victims were repairing the vehicle during the accident, said the OC. In Cumilla, a former headmaster of a government primary school was killed when a speedy motorcycle hit him while crossing road in Aungaura area on the Gouripur-Homna regional in Daudkandi upazila road at noon. The deceased was identified as Md Jahirul Hoque, 82, former headmaster of Gouripur Government Primary School and also a resident of Aungaura village. In Pabna, three motorcycle riders were killed in a head-on collision between their motorbike and a pickup van at Nagardemra of Sathia upazila in the district on Friday afternoon. The identities of the deceased could not be ascertained immediately, said Asif Mohammad Siddikul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sathia police station. The accident occurred at around 5:30 pm when the vehicles collided head-on at Chhoto Pathaihat Gorostan area in the upazila, he added. A construction worker of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project died after a crane fell on him in Gazipur’s Chandna Chourasta area on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway on Friday afternoon. The identity of the worker couldn’t be known yet. Some others were injured in the accident. Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) on Wednesday detained the prime accused in Savar college teacher Utpal Kumar Sarker murder case from Gazipur district. The arrestee is a class IX student of Haji Yunus Ali School and College at Ashulia of Dhaka’s Savar upazila college. Earlier, Ashulia thana police arrested the 9th grader’s father Uzzal Hossain , another accused of the case from Kushtia, four days after the teacher was beaten to death in broad daylight in Savar . Uzzal was hiding with his family since the murder. Although Uzzal was arrested his other family members managed to flee during a police drive. Police said they recovered the cricket stump that was used in the killing. Police sent Uzzal to a court in Dhaka seeking a 10-day remand. Students and teachers of the college alleged that the student killed Utpal, head of the disciplinary committee of the college, in a pre-planned way. That’s the reason why the student beat up Utpal sir to death on the sports day,” said a student of the college. According to the college authorities, no CCTV footage of the crime was found as the cameras recorded nothing at that moment due to power outage. The college authorities suspect that the boy had disconnected the power supply before killing Utpal. Utpal Sarker, 35, son of Ajit Sarker of Engeldani village under Sirajganj’s Ullapara police station, had been serving as a teacher of Haji Yunus Ali School and College for almost ten years.
Thirty houses of two colonies were gutted in a fire in Chandra area of Kaliakoir upazila of Gazipur district on Saturday. Saiful Islam, in-charge of Kaliakoir Fire Service, said the fire originated from an electric short circuit gutted the houses in the morning. On information, two firefighting units rushed to the spot and extinguished the blaze after one and one and half hours of frantic efforts. No causalities were reported, he said.
Gas supply will remain suspended for 24 hours from 9 am on Friday in different areas of Gazipur and adjoining areas due to emergency works in gas pipelines. Police on Friday claimed to have arrested a man on charges of killing his wife in Gazipur’s Kaliakair upazila on Thursday night. The deceased was identified as Akhi Akhter, 23, wife of Akbar Hossain, a garment factory worker. The couple lived in a rented house near Palli Bidyut Somiti. On Thursday night, again an argument broke out between Akbar and Akhi. In a fit of rage, the accused smashed her head with a stone leaving her dead on the spot. After the locals informed the cops, the body of the deceased was recovered. Officer-in-charge of Kaliakair Police Station, Akbar Hossain, said the man was arrested for killing his wife. "Necessary legal action will be taken in this regard."
Two people were killed and three others were injured after a bus and a pickup van crashed into each other at the Shallabari area of Kapasia in Gazipur on Saturday morning. The deceased were identified as Zinnah, driver of the pickup van and its passenger Delwar. However, the identities of the injured are yet to be known. The accident occurred around 7am when a Dhaka-bound bus and a Kishoreganj-bound pickup van collided head-on at the Shallabari area of Dhaka Kapasia Road in Gazipur, said AFM Nasim, officer-in-charge of Kapasia police station. At least 10 workers sustained burn injuries as a fire broke out in a readymade garment factory in Gazipur's Kaliakair Monday. The blaze started at Nur Group's Rayan Textile in Chandra just one week after another fire accident at the same factory. The fire originated at a fabric warehouse on the 4th floor of the factory and spread like a wildfire, Gazipur Fire Service Deputy Assistant Director Md Abdul Hamid said. Five firefighting units from Joydebpur, Kaliakair, and Kashimpur responded, and could get the blaze under control after one and a half hours.
