Gazipur safari park animal deaths: One more official shunted out
Another official of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park in Gazipur has been shunted out as the probe into the recent animal deaths continues.
Md Sarwar Hossain Khan, the wildlife supervisor of the park, was transferred, and Md Helim Rayhan, the wildlife ranger of Rajshahi, has been appointed in his place, said Dipankar Bar, senior information officer of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
Earlier, three officials -- the project director, the veterinary officer, and in-charge of the park -- were removed from their posts to ensure an impartial investigation into the deaths of the animals.

So far this year, 11 zebras, one lioness and a tiger have died at the park. Of them, 10 zebras died between January 2 and 24.
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has already formed a five-member committee to find out the cause of the zebra deaths and fix accountability. It has been given 10 days to submit a report.
Meanwhile, on Monday, a team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) visited the park and collected samples for tests at its laboratory.

Air quality worst in Gazipur, best in Madaripur: Study
Bangladesh’s most polluted air is in Gazipur, but Madaripur district is blessed with the country’s best air quality, according to a countrywide study.
The study says the air pollutant concentration, PM2.5 (particulate matter 2.5), is 263.51 microgram (which is considered as very unhealthy) in Gazipur, while it is 49.08 (healthy) in Madaripur.
Centre for Atmospheric Pollution Studies (CAPS) of Stamford University Bangladesh published the findings of the study titled “Countrywide Air Quality Study in 64 districts,” at a press conference at the Jatiya Press Club on Thursday.

Vice-Chancellor of the university Prof Mohammad Ali Naqi presided over the function and CAPS Founder and Chairman Prof Ahmad Kamruzzaman Majumder presented the findings of the study.
2 killed in Gazipur road crash
Two people including a child were killed as a minibus hit a three-wheeler on Dhaka-Tangail highway in Gazipur on Wednesday.
The deceased were identified as passengers of the three-wheeler Marufa Begum, 54, wife of Gauchh Miah, a resident of Kadda Nandun area and Md Limon, 12, son of Nur Alam of the same area and a 6th grader at Medha Bikash Kindergarten.

Basan police station SI Matiuzzaman said when the three-wheeler was going to Chandna-Chourasta area from Konabari area a minibus of Taqwa Paribahan lost control and hit it from behind on Dhaka-Tangail highway leaving Limon dead on the spot.
Seriously injured Marufa was taken to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital where doctors declared her dead, he said.
The minibus driver managed to escape with the bus, he added.
Train derails in Gazipur
Two compartments and the engine of a Netrakona-bound train derailed at Kawraid Railway Station in Gazipur Thursday noon.
Several passengers were injured while trying to get off the train.

The engine and two bogies of Mahua Express Train veered off the tracks before entering Kawraid station around 11:45 pm, said Anwar Hossain, station master of Kawraid Railway Station.
Due to the derailment, rail movement on line two of Kawraid railway station remained suspended. However, the trains are running on line one, said the station master
The higher authorities were informed to salvage the train, he added.
Man, woman’s hanging body recovered from Gazipur
The hanging bodies of a man and woman next to each other were recovered on Saturday from a flat in Jajhar Uttar para area in Gazipur City.
The deceased were identified as Rajat Kanti Chowdhury, 37, director of Sigma Diagnostic Center in Gazipur and Lima Aktar, 25, medical assistant at a local sweater factory.
According to police, Lima used to work as a nurse at Sigma Diagnostic Center when she got involved in an extra-marital affair with Rajat, a married man.
As her family got informed of their affair Lima left the job and a month ago she rented the flat after getting a job at the factory in the Gacha area.

According to neighbours, Rajat often used to visit Lima, said police.
On Saturday, as Lima did not join the office, the factory authority sent someone to her house around noon and he found their bodies hanging from the ceiling fan after breaking the door, said Ismail Hossain, Officer-in-Charge of Gacha police station.
OC Ismail said they are suspecting both of them committed suicide together at some point on Friday night.
The bodies were sent for an autopsy, he said.
Man found dead on the day of his wedding
A man who went missing a day before his wedding ceremony was found dead on Friday afternoon in a forest in Gazipur.
The man was identified as Shariful, an auto rickshaw driver.

It was learned that his marriage ceremony was set to be held this morning but he had been missing since last night. And in the afternoon Kaliakoir police found his headless body in the Gajari forest area.
Police officials did not comment on the incident.

However, the family of the deceased demanded that police investigate the murder. They suspected it as work of a member of bride’s family, but did not name any one.
A CID team also visited the spot and conducted a primary investigation.
Fire guts valuables at Gazipur RMG factory
A fire gutted valuables of ‘Ripon Knitwear Factory Ltd’ at Konabari Jarun in Gazipur city on Tuesday.
The fire broke out in a warehouse on the ground floor of the five-story building at noon and spread soon.

On information, six firefighting units rushed to the spot. It took two hours to extinguish the blaze.
However, the workers, who were working in the building, managed to come out when the factory catches fire.
The origin of the fire and the extent of loss caused by the fire will be known after investigation, said Abdul Hamid.
AL appoints Ataullah Mandal as Gazipur unit acting general secretary
Awami League has named Md Ataullah Mandal as the acting general secretary of the party's Gazipur metropolitan unit replacing disgraced Zahangir Alam who has recently been expelled from the party, according a press release on Thursday.
Ataullah was chosen by the Awami League's Central Executive Committee, said the release signed by the party’s Office Secretary Biplob Barua.

The post fell vacant on November 19 after Awami League expelled Zahangir, also the mayor of Gazipur, for life over allegations of making derogatory comments on Bangabandhu and martyred freedom fighters, He also lost primary membership of the party.

Mother-daughter duo found dead in Gazipur
A 25-year-old woman and her five-year-old daughter were found dead in the city's Deshipara area on Wednesday night.
The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.
After being alerted by local residents, a police team rushed to the spot and took the bodies into custody around 10 pm, said Ripon Chandra, assistant commissioner of police (sadar zone).

Police suspect the assailants slit the throats of the mother-daughter duo with sharp weapons. “A probe is on to ascertain the reason behind the killings,” said Ripon.

The bodies were sent to the morgue of Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem.
2 crushed under train in Gazipur
Two female garment workers were crushed under the wheels of a train on Tongi-Bhairab rail track at the outer signal of Arikhola Rail Station in Gazipur district on Sunday.
The deceased were identified as Jesmin, 42, wife of Kabir and Shahinur, 25, wife of Quamrul of Kaliganj upazila of the district. They were workers of Hamim Group.

‘Surma Mail’ train hit the two women while they were crossing rail tracks at Khanjana around 7:30 am, leaving them dead, said Station Master Saidul Islam.
On information, police recovered the bodies and sent those to local hospital morgue for autopsy.
