PCR machine, 8 ventilators lying unused for 10 months in Sirajganj
A Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) machine used to detect coronavirus and other complicated diseases, and eight ventilators are lying packed at Shaheed M Monsur Ali Medical College in Sirajganj though the country’s health sector is struggling to tackle the coronavirus pandemic with its limited resources.
The medical college authorities have sought a new PCR machine from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) even though the previous machine and ventilators bought eight months back remained unpacked, said Project Director of Dr Krishna Kumar Pal.
Last year, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) launched an investigation into the irregularities in purchasing the medical equipment for the medical college spending nearly Tk 250 crore.
Although the ACC is yet to conclude its probe but it has no objection to using the PCR machines and ventilators, Dr Krishna said quoting the investigation officer of the ACC.

Coronavirus patient buried at night in Sirajganj
Police on Monday night buried a man at Malsapara of Sirajganj Municipality after he died of coronavirus in Dhaka.
Hafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, said the 50-year-old man from Gozaria died while being treated in quarantine.
Police buried the man around 10pm on an appeal from his family members, the OC said, adding that only the man’s wife accompanied the body.
She returned to Dhaka after burial.
Bangladesh has so far confirmed 2,948 coronavirus cases and 101 deaths.

Police seized 357 kgs of OMS rice and arrested a dealer from Gopalpur village in Shahzadpur upazila on Sunday night.
First coronavirus patient detected in Sirajganj
Sirajganj reported its first confirmed coronavirus case on Monday.
A 65-year-old man from Goprekhi village of Belkuchi upazila tested positive.
The local administration has put five villages under lockdown, said acting Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Rahmatullah on Monday.
The villages are- Goprekhi, Madhobpur, Bhangabari, Gopolpur and Charkadoho.
The UNO said that the man returned from Narayanganj 10 days ago. Later, he took shelter at his relative’s house as villagers asked him to leave village. As he fell sick at his relative house, he was first taken to Enayetpur Khaza Yunus Ali Medical College Hospital.
However, he fled from isolation ward.
On information, a medical team went to his house and collected sample.
His sample was confirmed positive on Sunday night at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
