Rajshahi hospital sees record 25 Covid deaths in single day
The Covid-19 situation is worsening in the frontier district of Rajshahi by the day.
Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital (RMCH) on Tuesday recorded 25 new Covid-related deaths in 24 hours, the highest single-day toll at the hospital.

Of them, nine had tested positive for Covid, while the remaining showed symptoms of the virus, said hospital director Brigadier General Shamim Yeazdani. Four of them died at the hospital intensive care unit.
Of the deceased, 12 people hailed from Rajshahi district, five each from Chapainawabganj and Natore, two from Naogaon and one from Chuadanga district.

A total of 340 people have died of Covid-19 at the corona unit of RMCH in June so far.
Earlier, the Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital (RMCH) recorded 18 deaths on June 24, which was the highest to date.
Some 70 people have been admitted to the corona unit of the hospital in the past 24 hours, said Shamim. "Besides, 459 people are currently undergoing treatment against 405 beds at the hospital."

Meanwhile, the Covid-19 positivity rate continues to maintain an upward trend in the district. On Monday, 455 samples were tested at two laboratories of the district, of which 168 emerged positive.
The positivity rate increased to 36.92 % from 27.84 % during this time.

Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital (RMCH) on Monday recorded 14 new Covid-related deaths in 24 hours.
Of the deceased, seven were confirmed Covid patients while the remaining seven exhibited symptoms of the virus, said hospital deputy director Saiful Ferdous.

Of the deceased, 11 were male and 3 female.
Of them, 7 were from Rajshahi, 5 from Chapainawabganj, 1 each from Naogaon and Natore district.
A total of 119 people died in Bangladesh in 24 hours until Sunday morning, the biggest figure since the pandemic hit the country.
During the period, 5,268 more people came out positive with Covid-19 in 24,400 sample tests, said a handout issued by Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The country’s daily positivity rate fell to 21.59% today from Saturday’s 22.50%.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s Covid fatality rate rose to 1.60% from Saturday’s 1.59%.
The government has enforced a “strict lockdown” on a limited scale from Monday as the Delta variant of the Covid-19 virus is spreading fast in the country.

The Cabinet Division issued a circular in this regard on Sunday.
The lockdown will remain in force from 6 am on June 28 to 6am on July 1, the circular said.
Rajshahi child rape & murder case accused shot dead
A 21-year-old youth, who allegedly raped and murdered a child, was killed in a gunfight with police in Godagari upazila on Thursday night.
A mobile phone stolen from the girl's house on the night of the crime was also found on Shamim, police said on Friday.

Additional superintendent of district police, Iftekhar Alam, said, that some miscreants opened fire at a police team during a raid in Lalitnagar on Thursday night.
The cops retaliated and Shamim sustained bullet wounds in the crossfire. "He was rushed to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival," he said.

On the night of June 19, the child went to sleep alone in her room at her family home in Lalitnagar. The next morning, her parents found her lifeless body lying under a haystack.
"We have been tracking the local criminals since the horrific crime, and the recovered mobile confirmed Shamim's involvement in the rape and murder," said Iftekhar.

Of the deceased, 13 people hailed from Rajshahi district, one belonged to Chapainawabganj and four were from Naogaon district.

A total of 260 people have died of Covid-19 at the corona unit of RMCH in the last 24 days, officials said.
Earlier, the Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital (RMCH) recorded 16 deaths on both June 4 and June 23.
Some 54 people have been admitted to the corona unit of the hospital in the past 24 hours, said Shamim. "Besides, 404 people are currently undergoing treatment against 357 beds of the hospital."

Meanwhile, after showing a decline in the number of infections in the past four days, the district has seen a sharp rise in the infection rate. On Wednesday, 380 samples were tested at two laboratories of the district, of which 129 emerged positive.
Authorities have extended the ongoing lockdown in Rajshahi, which started on June 11, by one more week till June 30 following the worsening situation of Covid.
Lockdown extended for another week in Rajshahi city,16 more die
Lockdown was extended for another week in Rajshahi city on Wednesday in an effort to bring the worsening coronavirus situation under control.
Abdul Jalil, deputy commissioner of Rajshahi, made the announcement following a meeting at his office on Wednesday afternoon.
Now the lockdown which started on June 11 will remain in force until June 30.

A seven-day lockdown was first imposed in Rajshahi city on June 11.
Later the authorities extended it for another week till June 24 to break the chain of Covid-19 transmission in the city .
During the lockdown, all modes of public transport will stay off the roads. However, vehicles providing emergency services will remain out of the purview of the restrictions.
Moreover, all shops, markets and restaurants will remain closed, except for grocery stores and pharmacies.

In fact, Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital (RMCH) on Wednesday recorded 16 new Covid-related deaths in 24 hours.
Of them, eight had tested positive for Covid-19, while the remaining showed symptoms of the virus, said hospital director Brigadier General Shamim Yeazdani.
Of the deceased, eight were from Rajsahi district, three from Chapainawabganj district, two each from Natore and Naogaon districts and one belonged to Jhenaidah district.

Four of the deceased were aged over 61 years, three in the age group of 51-60 years and the remaining were aged between 31 and 50 years.
A total of 245 people have died of Covid-19 at the corona unit of RMCH in the last 23 days, officials said.
Shamim said that 60 people were admitted to the corona unit of the hospital in 24 hours till Wednesday morning.

Of them, 44 people hailed from Rajshahi, six from Chapainawabganj, two from Natore, five from Naogaon, two from Pabna and one from Jhenaidah.
Some 42 people have left the hospital after recovery during this period.
Besides, 410 people are currently undergoing treatment against 357 beds at the corona unit of the hospital, as the authorities opened a 48-bed facility equipped with centralised oxygen supply on Tuesday.
Of the total patients, 20 people are undergoing treatment in the ICU.

Meanwhile, the infection rate has further decreased in Rajshahi. On Tuesday, 457 samples were tested at two laboratories of the district, of which 151 came out positive.
Authorities have extended the ongoing lockdown in Rajshahi by one more week till June 24.
The decision to extend the lockdown to break the chain of Covid-19 transmission in the district was taken at a meeting held at Rajshahi Circuit House on June 17.

Among them, one tested Covid positive while the remaining nine died after showing Covid-19 symptoms at the hospital, said director of the hospital Brigadier General Shamim Yeazdani.

Of them, 35 are from Rajshahi, nine from Chapainawabganj, three from Natore, six from Naogaon and one from Pabna.

Thirty-eight people were discharged from the hospital after recovery during the period.
Besides, 377 people are undergoing treatment against 309 beds at the Corona unit of the hospital which was 365 in the previous day.
4th grader killed ‘after rape’ in Rajshahi
A class four student was killed reportedly after rape at Lalitnagar village in Godagari upazila of Rajshahi district early Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Sumaiya Khatun, 11, daughter of Anwar Hossain of the village.

Mahmudul Hasan, officer-in-charge of Godagari Kakonhat police camp, said Sumaiya went to bed after watching TV on Saturday night.
When her parents woke up in the morning they did not find her in her room.
After a frantic search, they found the body of Sumaiya under a pile of paddy husk.
On information, police recovered the body and sent to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital morgue.

Police suspected that the girl was killed after rape sometime in the night.
Police are trying to identify the culprits, said the OC.
Bangladesh's rape epidemic
Sexual assaults on women continue unabated in Bangladesh, despite the government introdued death penalty for rapes last year.

Earlier last month, a police headquarters report said that 26,695 rape cases were filed across the country in the past five years.
Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) data shows that 1,018 children were raped last year alone, but only 683 police cases had been filed. Also, 116 survivors were six years old or below.
Overall, 1,627 rape cases were reported last year and 53 of the women were killed by the perpetrators while 14 took their own lives, as per the data.
However, ASK's data is just the tip of the iceberg, according to aid agencies, who report that most women are too afraid to report rape.

In October 2020, the country was rocked by protests after a woman was allegedly attacked and raped in Noakhali.
In November last year, Bangladesh introduced capital punishment for rape, following days of protests against sexual violence against women in several cities across the country.
