Covid surge in Rajshahi: Shops, restaurants to shut by 8pm
Rajshahi district administration has ordered closure of shops, shopping malls, recreation centers, restaurants and all business establishments by 8 pm amid an alarming surge in Covid cases in the district.
The directive will be effective from January 29 along with all other directives imposed by the government to curb Covid-19 until any further notice, according to a notice issued by Abdul Jalil, Deputy Commissioner of the district.
DC Abdul Jalil said the decision was taken on Friday night in an emergency meeting of the district Covid control and prevention committee.

The decision it was announced through mike on Friday, he said.
Besides, a team was formed and police administration was informed to enforce the decision.
On Friday the case positivity rate in the district stood at 64.52 per cent after detecting 120 cases among 186 sample tests, said Brigadier General Shamim Yazdani, director of Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital (RMCH).

On Thursday the positivity rate was at 74.84 per cent, he said.

Sramik League leader hacked to death in Rajshahi
A Sramik League leader was hacked to death in Rajshahi’s Bhadra Rail Colony over land feud on Friday noon, police said.
The victim was identified as Zahurul Islam, a railway portal at Amanura station in Chapainawabganj.
He was the vice-president of the railway Sramik League and former general secretary of ward-19 Awami League.
Touhidul Haque Sumon, local councilor of Ward-19 said Zahurul was having a dispute with Sajeeb, son of Motihar, another railway worker, over farming on a railway land behind his house.
On Friday afternoon, Sajeeb stabbed him and escaped after a quarrel with Zahurul while planting paddy in the feild. Locals took him to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where doctor on duty declared him dead, he said.

Chandrima Police officer-in-charge (OC) Imran Ali said Zahurul and Sajeeb were both railway employees. The two of them used to cultivate on railway land for several years. This year, when Zahurul went to plant paddy in the land alone which became a matter of dispute.
Sajeeb's father Matiar has been arrested and taken into police custody. He was present during the incident, the OC said.

Bangamata Football: Rajshahi clinch title beating Mymensingh 2-0
Hosts Rajshahi District clinched the Bangamata National Women’s Football Championship title beating Mymensingh District by 2-0 goal in the final at the Shaheed Muktijoddha Smriti Stadium in Rajshahi on Saturday.
Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi Abdul Jalil was the chief guest in the day’s final and later he distributed the trophies. FIFA council member and BFF EC member Mahfuza Akhter Kiron was also present on the occasion.
Surdhoni Kisku of Rajshahi team was adjudged best player of the tournament, Sadia Akhter of Bangladesh Ansar & VDP team, who scored nine goals, named as the highest scorer, Ansar & VDP received the “fair play trophy” while Asmat Ali Khan Stadium on Madaripur named as best venue of the tournament.
4 bikers killed in road crashes in Mymensingh, Rajshahi
Four people were killed in separate road accidents in Mymensingh and Rajshahi districts on Friday.
In Mymensingh, three bikers were killed and another injured when a truck hit their motorcycle on China intersection in Shambhuganj in the evening, leaving three of the bikers dead on spot.

The deceased were identified as Babu Mia, 25, Yasin Ali, 18, and Ripon Mia, 20.
The injured is undergoing treatment at Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital, said Shah Kamal Akand, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Model Police Station.
The bodies were kept in the hospital morgue for autopsy, the OC added.

Meanwhile, in Rajshahi, motorcyclist Firoz Hossain, 16, was killed after his bike collided with a pick-up van on Rajshahi-Kakonhat road at Shulitola area in Godagari upazila around 11am.
Another was injured and is undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital, said Mahbub Alam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Damkura Police Station.
Bangamata Football: Mymensingh, Rajshahi earn comfortable win
Hosts Rajshahi and Mymensingh District earned convincing victories in the final round of the Bangamata National Women’s Football Championship at the Shaheed Muktijoddha Smriti Stadium in Rajshahi on Monday.
In the day’s first match, hosts Rajshahi District, riding on a hat-trick by Shornali, earned an easy 8-0 goals victory over Nilphamari District.
Rajshahi led the first half by 3-0 goals.

Shornali scored four goals for the home team in the 6th, 12th, 48th and 88th minutes respectively to complete a hat-trick.
Sita netted twice in the 28th and 80th minutes while Shampa and Afroza added one more goal each in the 67th and 71st minutes.
In the day’s other match, a brilliant hat-trick by Selina guided Mymensingh to crush Magura District by 10-0 goals.

Selina scorrd four goals in the 2nd, 43rd, 81st and 89th minutes, Shikha and Amena netted two goals each while Ronnie and Salam scored one each for Mymensingh.
Awami League activist dies of injuries at Rajshahi hospital
An Awami League activist who sustained injuries in poll-related violence in Jhenaidah died during treatment at Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital on Saturday morning.
The deceased was identified as Abdur Rahim, a local Awami League activist of Krishnanagar village. He was injured in union parishad election-related violence at Shailkupa in Jhenaidah.
According to police, supporters of independent chairman candidate Zulfiqar Kaishar Tipu thrashed Abdur Rahim, who was campaigning for boat symbol candidate Mahmudul Hasan Mamun, at Katlagari Bazar in Sarutia union of Shailkupa upazila during the fifth phase of UP election on January 5.

An injured Rahim was soon taken to Shailkupa Upazila Health Complex from where he was referred him to Kushtia General Hospital.
As his condition deteriorated, he was sent to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital for better treatment, where he died on Saturday morning.
So far, four Awami League workers have been killed in attacks and clashes in different villages of the union.

Jobless man sets sleeping wife on fire in Rajshahi
In a horrifying incident, a jobless man set her 37-year-old wife, a primary school teacher, on fire in her sleep on Thursday.
According to neighbours, Fatema Khatun, a teacher of Mohishbathan Government Primary School, is now at the crossroads of life and death with 25 percent burn injuries at Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital.
Her sister Nurjahan Khatun said when Fatema, a mother of two, was asleep at her home in the city’s Bulonpur Ghoshpara area when her husband Sadikul Islam set fire to her by pouring kerosene over her body around 1 am and fled the scene.

Informed by the neighbours, Fatema’s family rescued her and took her to the hospital.
“Fatema suffered 25 per cent burn injuries in her face, chest and hands. Her respiratory tract has been affected…her condition is critical,” said Dr Afroza Najnin, the head of RMCH burn unit.
Nurjahan alleged that Sadikul has no job and he had been torturing Fatmea since their marriage 20 years ago.
“My sister didn’t disclose the repression by her husband and maintained the relationship for social reasons. Now we’ll file a complaint against Sadikul,” she said.
Meanwhile, Sadikul, son of former ward councilor Sazzad Hossain, could not be contacted over phone as he is on the run.
Majharul Islam, officer-in-charge of Rajpara police station, said he got information about such an incident and Sadikul has gone into hiding.
“Action will be taken once we receive a complaint,” the OC said.

One dead, 6 injured in bus-truck collision in Rajshahi
A 45-year-old man was killed and six passengers were injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a truck in Puthia upazila of Rajshai on Monday night.
All the victims were occupants of the bus. The deceased was identified as Khoaj Ali, a resident of Palpara village in the upazila. He was the conductor of the ill-fated bus.
The injured are currently being treated at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH).

The accident occurred around 7.30pm near the Bhoruapara area on Amchattar-Belpukur Bypass Road when the Natore-bound bus crashed into the Rajshahi-bound truck coming from the opposite side.
Firefighters rushed to the spot and took the seven injured people to RMCH, where the the bus conductor was declared dead on arrival, said Saidur Rahman, a Fire Service officer.

Two to die for murder in Rajshahi
A Rajshahi court on Monday sentenced two people to death for killing a man in 2013.
The condemned convicts are-Phuljan Bibi, 40, wife of Deraj Mistri and Mafiz Uddin, 45, son of Moijuddin of Kathalbaria in Durgapur upazila of the district.
The court also fined them Tk 50,000 each.
According to the prosecution, Phuljan had maintained illicit relationship with Nurunnabi alias Ayub Nabi and Mafiz Uddin despite having her husband.

When Mafiz came to know about the relationship between Phuljan and Nurunnabi, he got angry.
To make Mafiz happy, Phuljan then made a plot to kill Nurunnabi with the assistance of Mafiz.
On April 15, 2013, Phuljan called Nurunnabi near a poultry farm where she along with Mafiz killed Nurunnabi.
Later, they severed the head of Nurunnabi and dumped the body.

Hashem Ali, son of Nurunnabi, filed a case with Durgapur Police Station.
After examining the records and witnesses, Rajshahi Public Safety Disturbance Crime Prevention Tribunal Judge Akbar Ali Sheikh handed down the verdict.
Father, son killed in Rajshahi road crash
A man and his son were killed when a truck hit a motorbike at Nimtala on Rajshahi-Chapainawabganj highway in Godagari upazila on Saturday night.
The deceased were identified as Abdus Salam, 60, and his son Ibrahim Hossain, 35, of Gulai village in the upazila.

The accident occurred around 10 pm when the truck hit the stationary motorbike carrying the duo, leaving Salam dead on the spot and Ibrahim injured, said officer-in-charge of Godagari Police Station Quamrul Islam.

Ibrahim was taken to a local hospital where doctors declared him dead around 2:45 am.
