Modern launch terminal to be constructed in Chandpur
Bangladesh Inland and Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) will build a modern launch terminal in Chandpur with all facilities.
Already a tender has been floated to build the terminal on 2.40 acres of land involving Tk 70 crore with the financial assistance of World Bank, Deputy Director of BIWTA, Chandpur, Kaisarul Islam, told UNB.
All modern facilities including river port office, washrooms for passengers, pure drinking water, sitting arrangements, prayer place, and waiting rooms for women and breast feeding corner will be available at the new terminal, he said.

Chandpur: Woman falls off bike as burqa gets stuck in wheel, dies
A 26-year-old woman riding pillion died after falling off her husband's bike as the loose end of her burqa got entangled in the rear wheel of the two-wheeler in Chandpur Sadar upazila.
The accident occurred at Chandra Chowrasta around 10am on Friday when Asma Akhter, her husband Sabuj Bhuiyan and their five-year-old son were on their way to her parents' house in Algibazar.

OC Abdur Rashid of Chandpur Sadar police station said that Asma's burqa suddenly got entangled in the rear wheel of the speeding bike and she fell off and suffered severe head injuries.
She was taken to Chandpur Government General Hospital in a critical condition. As her condition deteriorated, she was soon shifted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), where she succumbed to her injuries later that afternoon.
Her relatives brought back the body to Laxipur in Chandpur Sadar upazila from Dhaka on Friday evening, the OC added.
Ramadan begins in 40 Chandpur villages
Residents of as many as 40 villages in Chandpur district began the holy fasting month of Ramadan Saturday, in accordance with Saudi Arabia.
Maulana Zakaria Chowdhury, in charge of Hajiganj Sadra Darbar Sharif, said that the villagers have been celebrating all religious festivals like Eid and Ramadan on the lines of Saudi Arabia, home to the world's most holy Muslim sites, since 1928.
The residents of the villages across the upazilas of Faridganj, Matlab North, Kachua and Shahrasti offered their Tarabi prayers last night and began their dawn-to-sunset fast after having ‘Sehri’ before sunrise.

Following an official sighting of the new crescent moon Friday, Saudi Arabia announced that the kingdom would start the holy month of Ramadan Saturday.
This is the first year since 2019 that Ramadan, a holy month for the world's 1.5 billion Muslims, is being observed in the kingdom without Covid restrictions.

Elderly woman killed in Chandpur road crash
An elderly woman was killed as a bus ran over her on Chandpur-Cumilla regional highway at Sengaon area of Sadar upazila on Friday noon.
The deceased was identified as Anowara Begum, 65, a resident of Raldia village in Ashikati union of the upazila.
Quoting locals, officer-in-charge (OC) of sadar police station, A Rashid, said a Cumilla-bound bus hit Anowara around 12pm while she was crossing the highway after buying essentials from a grocery shop, leaving her dead on the spot.

On information, police recovered the body, he added.
The bus was seized but the driver managed to flee, the officer said.
Legal action will be taken in this regard, added the OC.
Chandpur: School picnic turns tragic as student drowns
An 18-year-old boy drowned in a river while on a school picnic to Mohanpur Tourism Centre in Matlab Uttar upazila of Chandpur Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Tutul Hossain Nayan, a 10th grade student of Dhaka’s Nabarun School and College, and son of Anwar Hossain, a police officer.
Md Azizul Haque, the school headmaster, told UNB that 140 students had gone for the picnic to Chandpur.

AKM Kawsar, in-charge of Mohanpur Naval Police Outpost in Matlab Uttar upazila, said that the boy drowned while taking a bath in the river with his three classmates at 3pm.
“After searching for hours, naval divers found his body around 6pm. The body was later handed over to his father. A general daily was lodged in this regard," he added.
3 sentenced to life in absentia for 2015 murder in Chandpur
A Chandpur court on Thursday served life sentences to three persons in a case filed over beating a man to death at Shahpur village in Faridganj upazila in the district,
The lifers are Bulu Begum, 45, her son Md Emran Hossain, 27, and Abdul Momin, 32, all residents of the Shahapur village.
Chandpur District and Session Court Judge SM Ziaur Rahman passed the verdict while the three convicts remained absconding, said Moktar Ahamed Ovi, Assistant Public Prosecutor of the court.
According to the case complaint, on October 17, 2015, the accused attacked Abdul Hannan, 55, in his house with locally made arms over an earlier dispute regarding property.
Hannan and his wife Shamsunnahar, 37, suffered severe injuries during the attack and were taken to Faridganj Upazila Health Complex. The duty doctor there announced Hannan dead on arrival.
A murder case was filed in this regard at Faridganj police station following a complaint lodged by Hannan’s wife accusing eight people and four more anonymous.
On November 29, 2015, Muhammad Humayun Kabir, investigation officer in the case and then Sub-Inspector of Faridganj police station submitted the charge sheet in the case.
10-month old burnt to death in Chandpur fire
A 10 months old baby girl was burnt to death in sleep as a fire gutted three houses at Bishnupur union in Chandpur sadar upazila on Thursday.
The deceased was Nusrat, daughter of Md Joynal Abedin of Sugandhya Safarmali village in the union.
The fire started from the kitchen of Jaynal Abedin’s house at 12:30 pm and within a few minutes it spread to the whole house, said the locals.

Nusrat’s mother went out keeping her daughter asleep in the house when the fire broke out, said the family.
Two units of firefighters brought the flames under control within 30 minutes and recovered the baby’s charred body, said Md Jakir Hossain, Inspector of Chandpur South Fire Service Station.
Nusrat’s body was handed over to Chandpur sadar model police station, he said.

“There was a gas cylinder in the kitchen and electric connections in all the rooms but the origin will be known after an investigation,” said the Fire Service official.
Woman who sold newborn to foot hospital bills, gets him back
A single mother in Chandpur who was forced to sell her baby immediately after giving birth to foot the hospital bills, got back her child Thursday night, all thanks to the local administration.
Tamanna Begum, 28, from Hanir Par village in Matlab Uttar upazila, underwent a C-section to deliver her baby Wednesday. But she had to sell the newborn boy to pay Tk 40,000 for the delivery at a private hospital.
Tamanna’s husband has been missing for a long time, and her neighbours admitted her to the hospital after her labor pain started.
"Soon after my admission, I gave birth to my son but no one sadly came forward to foot the medical bills. A man proposed to me that I could sell my baby to pay the bills and I complied," she said.

As the news spread across the locality, on Thursday, additional commissioner (land) Mohammad Hedayetullah and local police conducted a joint drive to return the child to her mother.
In fact, they recovered the baby from a woman named Shimla Aktar in Shatnal union of the upazila. After interrogation, they found out that both the parties had mutually brokered the deal.
Later, the administration handed over the baby to Tamanna by making both of them sign a bond.

Gazi Shariful Hasan, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) who supervised the drive, said, “We are glad that we could return the baby to his mother with spontaneous support of the locals.”
UNO Shariful personally gave Tk 5,000 to Tamanna as assistance.
70-year old woman dies in fire in Chandpur
A 70-year old woman died on Thursday night in a fire that broke out in her house at Paschim Santoshpur village in Chandpur.
The deceased was identified as Bely Begum, daughter of Lony Mia in Faridganj upazila.

Her neighbour Jannat Aktar said hearing her cry for help at 9 pm they tried to control the fire but couldn’t rescue her alive as the door was locked from inside.
The neighbours suspect the fire started from the cooking gas cylinder blast.
Five fire fighters managed to douse the blaze later, said Ohidul Islam, station officer of Algi Fire Fire Service.
The exact cause of the fire could not be known immediately, he said.

Md Shahid Hossain, Officer-in-Charge of Farid Ganj police station said the woman’s charred body was recovered.
Legal procedure is underway in this regard, he said.
Govt school in Chandpur charging students Tk 50 per jab of vaccine!
Parents and students alleged the authority of Chhengarchar Government Model High School in North Matlab upazila of Chandpur of taking Tk 50 per Covid-19 vaccine jab to students.
When asked, Benzir Ahmed, headmaster of the only government school in the area, even accepted the allegation saying, “To meet the many expenses of conducting the vaccine campaign from our school as a center we are taking Tk 50 from the students per jab.”

Parents claimed some students had to pay more than Tk 50.
There are 1,000 students currently enrolled in the school which indicates only from its own students the authority could collect Tk 50,000 in this regard.
The government directed to vaccinate the school students on an emergency basis by January 31 to ensure the quality of education and their attendance in the schools amid a surge in the Covid-19 cases.
Though the government is vaccinating the students free of cost, collecting money by the Chhengarchar Government Model High School authority has agitated the parents and concerned locals.

However, Abdul Kayum Khan, Upazila Secondary Education officer told UNB he didn’t receive any complaint in this regard and will take actions after an inquiry.
Meanwhile, Md Gias Uddin patwari, District Secondary Education officer also said he had no such information and will take administrative measures if it's true.
